Start up Beach Ball since 10.7.5 update

Since updating to 10.7.5 I require multiple hard boots (Power Off) to start up my new iMac.  The 1st boot I get the beach ball after sign on. The 2nd hard boot I get the beach ball after the menu bar shows but prior to the desktop icons. 3rd boot usually works sometimesasking "your quitting an operation in progress do you want to continue". What's up?

I should add to this issue that Time Machine backups seem to take extremely long times and I've had to remove all my external drives from spotlight as the last check indicated days to re-index 140MB on one of the external drives.  Don't know for sure if the time machine/spotlight issue is part of the 10.7.5 update but think it is.  Wonder if up grading to Moutain Lion would fix the issue?  I've downloaded it but have yet to install.

  • Spinning beach ball since I upgraded Mac OS to 10.6.4

I upgraded the OS for my MAC to 10.6.4 and now I frequently get a spinning beach ball. I never had this problem with previous versions of OS.

I had been seeing increasing incidences of this. It was getting very annoying. FWIW, I'm using FF 6.0 and 10.6.8. This wasn't where FF was just taking time downloading. I'd get the spinning beach ball for 15-20 seconds BEFORE it started actually downloading, and frequently when I was already on a web page, and just scrolling down.
I tried disabling all plug-ins and extensions. No help.
    Here's how I fixed it.
    (1) Fix permissions and
    (2) Completely remove and restore Firefox. Remove all FF preferences (trash user/Library/Firefox), the application, and re install the application.
Yes, be sure you preserve your bookmarks, ideally through Xmarks, and you'll have to redo all your passwords. Small price to pay.
After I did this, I had NO problems. Spinning beach balls are gone.
But I'd sure like to know why ...

  • IPhoto does not start - spinning beach ball of death

    Hi
When I try to start iPhoto I get the spinning beach ball of death and the whole laptop freezes.
Cannot force quit, have to restart via power button.
I have tried starting iPhoto while holding the Option key - no difference.
    Jenn

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the *command and option (or alt) keys* while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Slow and spinning beach balls after 10.8.2 update

After the initial install of ML 10.8 for the most part the sytem seemed to run fine.  Very few snags.  But after the 10.8.1 and now the 10.8.2 updates I am finding slower and slower times for programs to boot and waiting to be able to type anything and spinning beach balls all the time.  I have noticed this continuously bringing up the contacts program, MS word, Pages, Apple Mail etc.   Initial booting of the computer is slower as well and often has a frozen beach ball for a minute or so before it unfreezes and proceeds.  Also huge slow down in printing from my wifi printer which before was super fast.  I have reset the SMC, Pram, did disk permission repairs and all of those items.  Nothing has changed anything.  This is a early 15" 2011 MBP unit with 8 gig of ram, 750 gig hard drive with only 250 gig in use, 2.2 I7 processor and Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB.  All software is updated to latest versions.  This slower and slower and waiting thing is getting continuously worse all the time and very annoying.   If anyone has any ideas I am open to suggestions to find a solution.  Thanks much.

Seems we have a lot of people with simular problems but a lot of different combonations.  Cleaning caches, reseting Pram, taking almost everything out of login items even using a program to defrag the unit,  (mine is not a SSD drive), making sure all apps etc. are up to date and are ML ok etc. I have all done.  I even had the unit tested by the Gen. Bar guys to make sure the hardware was ok including the drive even though I was pretty sure it was as I did not have this problem before ML.  All checked out fine.  I have not in the past had any problem with Time Machine backups but??????????   I only use a usb external and plug it in when I want to do a back up so it is not doing the backup thing all the time.  I have thought of doing the erase and clean install  which will be a huge amount of work but I have read many postings saying they have done that and it did not solve the problem so reluctant to do that if in the end I will spend two days for nothing?   Could go back to SL or Lion as I have bootable backups but why should I have to do this on a year old MBP to make it work properly?  Seems there ought to be a solution on this but Apple does not seem to have one?  As I said in my original post all seemed good for the first month of ML then it began going down hill and has continued to ever since.  I did notice last night that something strange seemed to help for a little while.  I loged out of the unit as I have auto login and when I relogged in all seemed much quicker and better but today it has started to slow down again?   I know everyone with this problem would like a solution!

  • 'Beach ball' freezes continue after OS update

    Hi, all-
I've begun getting 'beach-ball' freezes I can only escape by holding down the power button. My year-old MBP13 was on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 (and Safari 5.0(6553.16)) and I had one or two recently but began getting them more frequently as of yesterday. Today I upgraded to 10.6.4 and made sure I was on Flash 10,1,53,64 but it still happens (and I can make it happen on demand by going to a specific web site). After rebooting from an on-demand one, the console log shows "*launchd[1] has started up*' ; "(com.apple.ReportCrash) Falling back to default Mach exception handler. Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.self" ; "(com.apple.Kerberos.renew.plist[100]) exited with exception code: 1" ; "Main starting with pid 108, parent pid 79".
Other info: The cursor is a beachball symbol everywhere on the screen EXCEPT (oddly enough) on the icons in the upper-right corner of the screen. (Skype, time machine, Bluetooth, Airport, etc icons)
Also, when I press the power button, I get the prompt for rebooting or shutting down but choosing either has no effect. I must hold down the power button until the screen goes blank. Also; the web site where I can re-create the problem is www.shorelander.com (a boat-trailer manufacturer). I select "Parts Finder", then "Parts Information". After about a three second pause, the perpetual beach ball starts.

The only sites that mucked up for me had bad javascripts. I've seen none that have choked on internet plug-ins. Have some examples? If disabling plugins helped, you might want to determine exactly which ones are causing the issues. These are mine (latest versions) and they're not causing any issues:

  • ITunes 7.7 - Starts, no beach ball, then quits unexpectedly

    Hi All,
This doesn't seem to be the 'no GUI/device' issue everyone else is getting.
After downloading iTunes 7.7, my iTunes will start, I can see the GUI and it seem to be OK, then it quits after about five seconds.
I have manually downloaded 7.7 from Apple and re-run the installer, but no effect. I did not delete iTunes before running the installer - does this matter?
    Any other ideas/solutions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

    Hey Chris,

    MBP 2009
Sometimes when I start up (not auto login), items in the dock appear, but then the beachball appears, and then nothing else loads in the top menu.
Then, when I restart, all is well.
    What could this be?

    Hello, soulartist.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

  • Hard disk runs slow/beach balls since installing Leopard

    Hi,
Since installing Leopard I've found any sustained disk use (copying files, extracting archives etc) incredibly slow, much slower than under 10.4. I've even done a clean install after a format, performed a disk verify and repair from the install boot CD and still no luck. It just seems that hard drive operations run frustratingly slow, and also cause general use of the system to momentarily hang.
Has anybody else experienced this problem? I have a 24" iMac Core 2 Duo (not the aluminium new one) with 4gb of ram.
    best,
    andrew

You may be able to repair this with the10.5.1 Combo Update
(I usually don't recommend updating to fix an issue but this is the first combo update in 10.5)
The combo update is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update (the one you get through SU) so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Folder Action Start up - beach ball of death

The subject says it all.  I can't turn on folder actions because it always ends like this.  Does this work for anyone?

Are these Folder Actions ones that you have created, or the standard actions provided by the system? Automator saves Folder Actions that you create as workflows (packages) stored here with normal permissions and user/group ownership as you. If you tried to roll your own outside of Automator, it may be the source of your problems, whether by location or permissions, or more bad luck.
    homedir/Library/Workflows/Applications/Folder Actions/
Here is what works via example:
I wrote a UNIX Bash shell script that converted specific types of files based on their extension into html files. This script also called on AppleScript to show an alert dialog listing the illegal files (if any) that were also detected. I wanted to attach this script to a Desktop folder so that I could drag and drop n-files for conversion.
I launched Automator and chose Folder Action. Then I choose Utilities > Run Shell Script. Dragged the latter onto the Automator workspace to the right. The settings for this action looked like the following (click to enlarge):
At the top you see the folder that I will attach the action too. And on the right, I chose input as arguments, because my shell script is reading from its command line.
The full shell script is pasted into the action. The normal shell shebang invocation is removed under these circumstances. Then you tell Automator to save the Folder Action, and exit automator.
Now, you right-click on the target folder, and at the bottom of the menu, is the Folder Actions Setup...
For mine, this is what the dialog should look like.
The Actions folder is irrelevant as it is a test folder for actions. I called my Desktop folder - file2html, and the Folder Action that Automator saved, was called file2html.workflow.
And here is the shell script that went into the folder action:

  • Everytime I start up my Mac mini I'll be able to use it only for a little while then the beach ball appears and it won't let me do anything I have to keep forcing it to turn off by holding the power button can someone help me?

I have no external devices connected to my Mac mini but still everytime I use it after about half hour to an hour in whatever I'm using wether it's the Internet or iPhoto or iTunes the beach ball appears and I cannot get it to stop I always have to press and hold the power button and force it to switch off I then do a safe reboot and it starts up again fine but same thing again after a certain amount of time it will freeze. I have also had on some occasions a bright white screen with a folder and a flashing question mark appear but it's not because of any external devices as they have all been removed please can someone help me as I have no idea why this keeps happening to my computer and I'm worried that there's something seriously wrong it's only about 6 months old and I have no experience in dealing with computers ??

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The beachball is literally every other minute. I tried to take the time to it's most basic second and it was 4:01:04 - I am currently backpacking in Laos with my bf and we are travel writers/photographers and he is helping me get this info.
We didn't know what anonymyze meant but we tried to make sure you couldn't see my name. So far the spinning beach ball has occurred 4 times in just writing these 4 lines.
We tried to make sure we didn't overwhelm you with the 4000 lines or more but just did a couple days worth of text. Thanks again for your time.

  • Since i updated latest version 6.0.2, it keeps getting stuck and goes really slow and the coloured beach ball spins for ages, so all i can do is force-quit - how can i install the version before this version again?

On a Mac Book pro - running 10.6.8
Firefox was fine until the last couple of updates that happened without my consent (?).
Suddenly there were weird errors and crashes of Flash
and slow loading pages. Now it's gone into rubbish mode where
the beach ball spins at the slightest fast type or double-click and then all i can do is force quit.
It's as if it can't cope with anything anymore.
How do i uninstall and keep my bookmarks etc and re-install an earlier version of it as it was before it got updated?
    Thanks

Hey Thanks for the link thing!
So i had tried it in safe mode, and thought that it was still in SMode but then realized that that stopped once i had closed it and reopened in aft/eve/ last night and started up again today, also. So i just tried it again in safe mode and it seems to not be doing it...but then it's so random anyway. But if i'm in safe mode like this there is no toolbar but i guess that's cool if that is what is making it sluggy and beach ball-y. But how do i stay in safe mode all the time? And if it is only in safe mode then does that mean i can't have the 3 addons i use - (java, QT, Flash- all the other vid things like divx etc are 'disabled' ) I thought those add ons were necessary to play/read things on the net?? Forgive my ignorance in this matter. But saying that, when it was going wrong, and i was clicking on audio links sometimes in the 'blank white page scenario' a popup would come and tell me that i would need ' QuickTime to play this track' and i would click 'continue' and it would link me to Apple to get QT...but i already have QT installed in my MBPro so i thought that was a bit weird...! when i just tried it now in safe mode it went straight to the audio link white page with player in the middle and played the track. But then as i said, it was a bit random before so i don't know if this was just a time when it worked...
Anyway, what do you think about my questions on operating in safe mode...should i have to do that?! i'll stay in Safemode until i hear back from you and see how well it performs.
    Thanks for your help.

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?
