Start up chime won't change

Hello,
I've got a problem with my MacBook Pro. After installing the Thunderbolt software update the start up chime won't change when I turn off the volume.
It seems to be that is hardware related, what kind of hardware could be damaged?

Click on drive volume so it is highlighted.
Get Info (CMD + I)
Show and expand if necessary the Ownership in the menu at bottom.
A boot volume needs to have Ignore Ownership thing OFF / not selected or "check marked" to work.
If you launch DU and click on volume, and Repair Permissions, and there are a LOT, not just a dozen, it was a bad copy and better to just redo perhaps, or walk away for 30-60 minute lunch break.
The fact it doesn't show up leads me to suspect that is why. HOWEVER, as in all things computer related (and Snow Leo as well) it is also true that things "break" and some USB and FireWire cases - that worked in Leo, are not working the same or properly in Snow L.
Me, I'd shrink the volume and set aside 50GB or less, and install Mac OS there. ie, create your own little "eDrive" to boot from. And if Mac OS won't install? then something wrong with the case.
Ignore Ownership 'thing' is and has been one of the primary issues, most often with external drives, not booting.
Why can't there even be a 'special' icon for boot drive? even Windows puts its icon on the boot drive volume. And I hear people ask for it or for it to always be listed at top. So... simple, a GUI visual "cue" would help.

  • Blank Screen after start-up chime, won't start

I'm rather perplexed as to what's happened to my PowerBook. I'll run throught it
    PowerBook 12" 1.33 768
    Background:
I've just updated it to 10.4.4, which caused it to get stuck at the Apple symbol and spinning wheel. I had to restart in single user mode and run applejack, restart again and it was fine.
Recently the PowerBook started to not wake from sleep, I'd have hold down the power button then restart it. I thought it had done teh same thing today, but this time it makes the start-up chime but gets no further than a blank (dark, black) screen.
I tried inserting the Mac OS X CD and start up holding down the C key, but still same blank screen (with the added benefit that I'm now unable to remove the CD)
I tried plugging it into an external monitor, but nothing.
I've tried resetting the Preference RAM and the PMU. With some limited success. On occasion after resetting the PRAM, turning it off then back on, it starts with something like a extra blow of air from the fan and white blank screen instead of a black one. It then won't turn off at all, the only way is to pull the power and the battery.
I've noticed that when the ac adapter is plugged in and i've the white screen it flashes very quickly, orange.
I tried starting in Tartget disc mode connected to an iMac, the disc doesn't appear.
I tried starting up with an external firewire drive attached, nothing.
I've tried starting holding the keys for open firmware mode, nothing.
I've removed the AirPort card, no change.
I removed the extra 512mb RAM with no change.
The screen is clearly working, has anyone any ideas how to get it started?
Any help would be appreciated, it's a second hand PowerBook and so has no AppleCare.
    Cheers
    Stuart

I had the EXACT same problem happen to me, Stuartea71. My PowerBook crashed on the on Feb. 4th and I still can't figure it out. I had just dowloaded the 10.4.4 update, bought iLife 06, and ordered a new battery.
I tried every single thing that you did above. I finally called customer support, and walked me through a few things which I had already tried, but she finally pin pointed something in disk utility that I missed. My disk would not mount. In red letters it said "failing." She told me that was a internal HD problem that needs to be fixed by a certified tech.
I did something I'd never done before. I put my HD to sleep to optimize battery performance. I work with podcasts and downloaded a large file. Unfortunately I forgot my battery setting. I chalk it up as a lesson learned, and just bit the bullet and ordered a MacBook Pro.
BTW... if you all customer service they basically read directly from the Apple Website. I paid $49 dollars for someone to tell me my mac was broken and send it in.

  • Start up drive won't change

I have cloned my start up disk via SuperDuper to another internal drive. I want to change the start up drive so that I can do some maintenance on the original drive. I choose the backup drive as the start up and it reverts back to the original drive. What is up with this?

  • How do I change volume on start up chime

how do I change volume on start up chime? For some reason the volume is very low, almost inaudible. I have external speakers.

The usual setting is based on the last-used Volume in:
    System Preferences > Sound
in the running system. Often, just setting the System Volume high enough will mean the chime is at a similar Volume.
The problem is that now sounds and speakers are under software control, and muting at Startup and what Volume sounds should be played through what ouputs at Startup has become more complex.

  • Start up chime

my macbook pro's chime stopped working everytime i turned it on. so i reseted the PRAM, which made the chime work again. now that its been reseted, the chime turns on even if i have muted the sound before shutting it down. how can i fix this?

    Thanks Pennbank.
I tried resetting SMC then the PRAM and still have the loud chime when everything is set to mute. When you hold down the left, shift>option>control>power button, are you suppose to hold it down so it starts up and then let go of them and press power again? I held them all down for a few seconds and nothing happened so released them and pushed power. Not knowing what I'm doing, I didn't want to mess anything up.
I did get a message from someone and this is what they wrote. I got an Apple upgrade last week and this is when I noticed the change in the start up chime. Unfortunately I don't have the option of taking it too an Apple store unless I drive 6 hours.
    Hey Pam,
I took it to the store and the person had to mute it themselves, instead of actually muting, he just lowered the sound. He said that he couldnt mute it completely but made it as quite as possible. He said that some people that got the last update ended up getting the one where the people who created the update forgot to add the option to adjust the chime. so basically, i got the update that screwed me over with the chime option. I now have the chime where i basically cant turn it off but its quite enough where it won't distract others in the library. Hope this helps

  • Purchased a new Apple TV and the remote double clicks each time I press the button. It worked fine during set up and for the first two days.  I have since moved it and this problem started. Restarted, reset, unplugged, change remotes, no change.Help please.

Purchased a new Apple TV and the remote double clicks each time I press the button. It worked fine during set up and for the first two days.  I have since moved it and this problem started. Restarted, reset, unplugged, changed remotes, no change. Latest software update. This is really annoying.  iPhone remote app works just fine.  Any suggestions?

That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it...

Hi, The options bar shows sample size 101 by 101 Average. That was my problem. When I was troubleshooting in order to try to explain to you what was happening, I noticed that when I sampled my models teeth, it gave me a color a bit lighter than her lipstick as my foreground color in my tool box. That started me thinking in the correct way. I didn't realize that my sample size had somehow gotten switched from point sample to 101 by 101 average. I appreciate the help. Thank you.

  • NO SOUND output (except for start-up chime) on MacBook Pro

I've been looking all over the discussion boards but haven't been able to figure this one out.
Suddenly for no apparent reason I have no sound output. I've checked all the settings, repaired disk permissions, restarted, etc. with no effect. I DO get the start-up chime but then nothing. Also, I do NOT have a red light emitting from my adio out jack. F3, F4 and F5 show the volume icon changing on-screen but with no actual sound output. Switching to a speakers or earphones doesn't change it either.
The only thing I can think of is that my battery has been slowly dying and has just recently started to crap out when the battery life indicator shows more than 50% charge. For this reason the computer has lost power and suddenly shut down once or twice without having been properly shut down. But the loss of sound input did NOT happen directly after this.
    Any suggestions?

    I Finally figured it out...
For some reason, my audio setting got changed in my audio prefs:
    System settings --> Audio
On the "Sound Effects" tab, it was set to "Internal Speakers", which explains why I was getting the startup chime, and alert sounds just fine.
However on the "Output" tab, it somehow got changed to "Sunflower" which causes the sound not to work. As soon as I changed it to "Internal Speakers" everything went back to normal.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can not disable, turn off, mute or remove Apple boot start up chime using Yosemite 10.10.1

I understand why Apple forces the boot chime upon us for marketing and diagnostics, but I really want to disable the start up chime when booting my MacBook Pro laptop.
I have tried the sudo commands that worked in Mavericks.
    nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80
    and
    nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00
They do not work with Yosemite.
I have also tried muting my laptop before shutting down and muting the sound entirely in System Preferences.  This method does not work either.
Every time I boot the laptop I have to annoy every one in the library, or the cafe, or the airport, or the workplace.
Anyone have a solution for this?

Same here. I've been wanting to disable this since very long time ago, and started actively looking for it when I bought my first macbookpro (rmbp13) last year. You won't get any answers because there isn't a solution.
We get it, this is for diagnostics. But with most laptops being non-serviceable these days, it doesn't make sense to push boot up chime for everyone. It's really annoying when my coworker boots up her machine, and this has been going on since as back as I can remember.
With 10.10.1, I have to often times force power-off my rMBP13 late-2013 model, and I'm the one making that obtrusive boot noise. Why can't Apple just make a preference check box as an option in system preference? I'll praise you guys and call it Magical.
Apple, please make an option to disable the boot chime noise!

  • Why doesn't Terminal "disable start-up chime" command work in Mavericks?

Numerous online articles incidate the following command disables start-up chime sound but in Mavericks 10.9.1 it has no effect:
    sudo nvram systemAudioVolume=%80
    Suggestions?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Business Name Won't Change

Hello! My business name won't change from my old business name (bargefamily iPod Touch Repairs) to my new business name (GraceTech Repairs). I can go into settings and change the name, and it appears to be successful, but then when I click my name/icon at the top right of the page it still says "Bargefamily iPod Touch Repairs" and on my bank statements whenever I make a transaction it still comes through as "Bargefamily iPod Touch Repairs" instead of my new business name. Any ideas?

    Hi Niel,
    Thanks for your time.
    Here's the whole scoop.
When I initially set up my computer I started out by setting up one user on my HD. This original user was named "casandrasilver".
I recently created another user and named it "jason". I did this by going into System Preferences/System/Accounts and here I added an account. I wanted "jason" to be the main user and "casandrasilver" to be the other account [for iTunes reasons] so in the same System Preferences/System/Accounts I changed the name to "jason". The "Short Name" in there was greyed out and could not be changed so I then posted my original question asking how to change that.
I then did as the first responder to my post suggested: 1) Open Macintosh HD
    2) Open the Users folder 3) Change the name of the home folder by selecting it and then clicking on the name.------HERE IS WHERE I CHANGED THE FOLDER THAT SAID "casandrasilver" to "jason"------- 4) Log Out and back in to make sure everything works correctly.
Then I went in and did as you said, and as you said not to do, so sorry.
This is what I did: I opened the NetInfo Manager in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, clicked the padlock, and typeed in my password. I then clicked on the "users" folder and changed everything under "Value(s)" that said "casandrasilver" to "jason".
Then I restarted and now I have two choices of users to log into. One user is "jason" but the home folder is named "casandrasilver" and the other is "casandra" and the home folder is named "casandra". (I didn't set up a user named just "casandra", this is baffling to me). They are both new accounts because the docks are fresh and the desktops are fresh and none of my folders that were on the original desktop show up, no iTunes or iMovies, etc.
    I hope you can help.
Thank you so much for your responses so far.

  • Mic Mute Hotkey doesn't work, Sound Mute Button won't change its color [Windows 10]

    Hello everyone,
I recently did a clean install of Windows 10 x64 on my HP Probook 450 G1 (E9Y30EA), and after installing drivers I noticed when I turn off the sound, my Mute Button won't change its color to amber (or orange, yellow, whatever), as it did in Windows 8.1 and 7.Also, another thing that's not working at all is Microphone Mute Hotkey (fn + F8). It neither turns off the microphone, nor lights up its LED. I have the latest version of HP Hotkey Support driver installed (7.0.13.1), HP Quick Launch Buttons, HP Wireless Button, installed, .NET Frameworks 2.0 and 3.0 etc.. everything is up-to-date, but it's still not working as it should. Microphone muting just doesn't work at all, and pressing (sound) Mute Button does mute sound, but its light stays white, so I often don't know whether I had the sound on or off with the glance of an eye as I used to. On the other hand, HP Wireless Button works normally, and it changes its color to amber when I press it to turn on Airplane Mode. TL;DR: Microphone Mute Hotkey doesn't work; Sound Mute Button does work, but its LED doesn't work. Is there anything I can do to fix that, or is it just a problem with driver incompatibility that would be fixed in some of the next updates? Or is it something else, like Windows 10 issue or audio driver maybe?
    Thanks in advance, pajser92

    Hi,
First download the sound driver using the links below and save the installer to your Desktop.
    Audio Driver - Windows 7
    Audio Driver - Windows Vista
When the download has completed, right click the installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation - ignore any warnings you may see about this being an earlier version.  When the installation has completed, restart the notebook.

    Hi everyone,
i've a problem with my mp3 tags, i'm trying to organize my library trough updating the ID3 tags but it won't work.
For example, I've 2 artists: ACDC and AC/DC, when I change the info artist into ACDC, it won't change anything and i'll still have both names aperaing.
Worse, on some compilation, in my iphone, the album nam will appear as many times as there is songs... if I've 20 songs in an album called "Compilation 1" for example, the album "Compilation 1" will appear 20 times in my iphone list...
    any idea?

No removing the program won't do anything to your music.  After you reinstall itunes first try copying a few songs to default location on your internal HD,  and see if problem still exists (make sure iTunes is pointed to it) THEN reestablish the external,

With Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to 'Lock Rotation' have you then moved the switch on the right-hand side of the iPad above the volume control 'off' ?
Or with the switch set to control 'notification mute' you should be able to unlock rotation via the far left of the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon far left; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't being controlled by the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
