Start up difficulties and unexpected shutdowns

When starting my Mac Book Pro It often shuts off immediately after the first sound, sounds.  I have to try sometimes up to 10 times, before it "holds" and I can use the Mac Book.  Other times it shuts down unexpectedly.  Any suggestions?
Thanks
Hans J. Brouwers

Hans,
no bravery is required to follow Linc Davis’ suggestion — only determination to solve your problem is required, as well as a helping of prudence to preserve your data, in case your startup difficulties are being caused by a disk which is starting to fail.

Please throw me the light, what may be issue.

I suggest you install [ IPD/OS|http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/clustering/ipd_download_homepage.html] on you cluster. This will give you all the relevant OS statistics so when a node reboot happens, you can figure out what the state of the nodes was at that time and then fix the problem. The hang is often caused by something other than Oracle RAC.

  • The operation of my computer (Mac OS X 10.6.8) has been frequently interrupted by an unexpected shutdown. How to solve the problem?

    Dear Sirs, owners and managers
    Apple Support:
I appreciate the opportunity given to request either always valuable assistance of masters.
It happens that I have been supporting, for some time, inopportune and unexpected shutdowns
of my Mac, with losses mounting and haul what I write in TextEdit.
I ask, in this situation indigestible, a help of you to resolve this anomaly and thus be able to
take back a firm and smooth operation of the MAC.
    Sincerely,
    Ricardo Cutolo

    Given your problem statement:
inopportune and unexpected shutdowns of my Mac
Unexpected hard shutdowns are usually either severe operating system corruptions, or they're triggered by hardware errors.   Bad memory, bad processors, bad power, bad disk, bad main board, etc.
A likely first step is to archive (back up) your data onto an external disk.  Get a good backup.
After that (and possibly a second, verified, external-disk backup), check your system log for any potential clues that might be logged there.   If there is nothing obvious, then ensure that all external devices (other than a keyboard and mouse) are disconnected, and see if the problems persist.
If you continue to have problems, then you'll likely have to boot the DVD installer dis and use Disk Utility to wipe the disk, and reinstall Mac OS X Snow Leopard onto the disk, and migrate your archive back in as part of the installation.
If the problems persist after the reinstallation, then it's probably a hardware error with whichever Mac is involved here.  If this is a new Mac or under support, call Apple support and see what they have to say.  If you have a local Apple store, you'll check with the folks at the Genius Bar for assistance.

  • Unexpected shutdown

Hi!  i have unexpected shutdown problem on my macbook pro.
It happens every time, no matter wich software (programs) iam using at that moment, unexpectedly:
display becoming black, but keyboard still have backlight (caps lock button does not work - lamp does not light), all buttons not working, indicator on the front edge (on the right side) is lit and not flashing. i can only push power button off.
    more simptoms
    unexpected shutdown happens:
when i am using spase button for preview folders and files
    when i am using photoshop
    when i am using Spaces
when i am opening Time Machine
when i am reinstalling MacOS and trying set Time Zone
when i am using/not using battery...
after mac boot up or 10-30 min later - whatever, when i am using graphic effects - unexpected shutdown happens
as example you can view my video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dyswi5McQ-U
    What i am already done:
    Reinstalled MacOS
    Changed hard drive
    Changed memory cards
    Resetted SMC
    Launched Diagnostic tools (no errors)
    Changed power adapter
... and unexpected shutdown still happening
I think, all that because i have problems with my videocard(s). And I think that this is a manufacturing defect.
How i can fix this problem? Can I fix it myself ?

    My Story:
in late 2010 I bought my macbook pro in official shop (Beijing, China). I did not buy an extended warranty. After several month using, I came to the official service (Beijing, China), because I had some problems with usb. Genius man took my computer, and told me that Apple can repair the computer during a few days for free. It was necessary to replace the motherboard. Unfortunately, I did not have a few days those time, cause I had to go to another country. Therefore, I was given a receipt on which I can restore my computer the next time, when I have time. Then I flew to another country. For several years, I have not had the opportunity to come to the Apple store. During all this time, I had a problem with unexpected shutdown. After I came back to China, in 2014, i came to the oficcial service center again. Told my story. They told me that they knew that I appealed about this issue before, but they can not help me because my warranty is over. And i was offered to replace the motherboard for about 5,000 yuan. This is terrible. This repair cost more expensive than buying a new computer with a much more powerful specifications (other computer brands). I am very sad that I bought a new computer, for a long time, to work on it and was unable to use it several years. Now my laptop simply stored in a drawer. When I bought the computer from Apple company, I was hoping to get a quality assistant in my work and life. But I was deceived. I want you to understand me. I am the system administrator. I am working with computers every day. For my clients i always advising to buy Apple computers for the quality and usability. "Shoemaker without shoes" - I would say. I am disappointed with the quality and support. There is nothing worse that when your favorite company denies you.
I know that Apple company launched "MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues", but only for MacBook Pro systems were sold between February 2011 and December 2013. Maybe this is a problem not only for computers released in 2011, but for 2010 too?

The proper way to close Firefox is through the File menu "Exit" or the equivalent with the Firefox button.

Firefox already running, to properly shutdown Firefox when closing the last window use File → Exit/Quit (or Firefox button → Exit). Closing Firefox with the [X] in the upper right corner closes the window ("Ctrl+W") but that does not necessarily close Firefox if it has subtasks running. If you want to close and reopen Firefox use the "Restart" within Add-ons if you made a change requiring a restart, or install "[https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/restartless-restart/ Restartless Restart]" ("Ctrl+Alt+R") which will allow you to take Firefox down and restart without having to check the Windows Task Manager to see if Firefox first actually ended. • Thinkpad x1 carbon unexpected shutdown and freezing during manual shutdown

Ever since i got my x1 carbon i've been experiencing constant unexpected shutdown issues. Ill leave my laptop on for a few minutes unused and when i come back it'll be turned off and when started back up it will prompt me that the computer has recovered from a unexpected shutdown. There are also numerous of times where i would attempt to put my laptop to sleep or shut it down manually and the screen will go black, however the laptop doesnt shutdown or goes into sleep mode, but instead freezes with a black screen. I've sent in my x1 carbon in once due to a harddrive failure where the computer wont even start up windows at all, the technician informed me that they put a new ssd in and ever since i got it back these issues still occur. Can some one please help me here? these occurance are getting more frequent and i'm afraid i might have to send in my laptop again due to harddrive failure.

    Hi, kuelderrek
Could you possibly go into Event Viewer and look at the Windows Logs, and then take a screenshot of these logs and post them here? I'd also recommend making sure all the drivers for your system are up to date, just to make sure they are not causing any issues. You can find all the drivers for your system here.
    Best,
    Adam

    Hello JinxUK,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with the iCloud Control Panel.  I found an article referencing the error message you are getting:
“Your setup couldn't be started because of an unexpected error.”
Apple is investigating this issue. This article will be updated as more information becomes available.

  • PS5 starts the error message unexpected / unexplained problem and quits

    Help.  No chat service available.

Please clarify:  do you really mean the over a decade-old, archaic, obsolete Photoshop 5.x, or are you referencing Photoshop CS5?
If the latter, please don't refer to it as "PS5".  Are you sure you are trying to start Photoshop in 64-bit mode?  Photoshop CS5 is the only Mac version that ever offered a choice between 32-bit and 64-bit modes.
In 32-bit mode, Photoshop CS5 can only have access to a very limited amount of RAM.
Your 4 GB of RAM are very, very little RAM these days.  You don't even mention the exact version of your OS.
    Also, give machine details:
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
A screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).

Make sure you quit all your applications before shutting down.

  • Unexpected shutdowns and loss of internet connectivity on brand new 420t

    Hi,
I was experiencing unexpected shutdowns (would see safe mode choices when turned PC back on) and also intermittent internet connectivity issues.
    To Fix:
In device manager, I turned off the option in the Realtek Network Controller Power management tab to allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
It's been working like a charm so far (2 days). I'm not so sure HP should be building PCs with this option set. There are no updates that I haven't installed either. PC still sleeps (can see nic lights go off) and wakes up just fine.
Other that that we really like this PC...Beats Audio wasn't impressive with only the internal speakers, then I tried a good set of external tweeters and a subwoofer and then it was realized.
    Hope this helps someone.

    Troy,
Thanks for the suggestion. It sounds like you've heard that others have had this problem. Is that right?
And are you suggesting that the kernel panics and the loss of Internet connection are related? They often happen independently of one another.
    Claire

  • What causes unexpected shutdown and restarts

ok last night my IPhone was really hot so I looked at it and it said 20% battery and it gave me the full battery sing. So I unplugged it than I shut it down for like 30 min and turn back on than I start charging it and talking on Skype with it. So before I went to bed. I shut it down and then when I woke up this morning I went to go plug it in. • Image creation with MDT task sequence- "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown"

I'm using MDT 2012 U1 to build and capture a Windows 7 x86 image for deployment with ConfigMgr 2012 SP1.  I'm using the standard client task sequence in MDT.
The MDT task sequence consistently fails after the reboot in the "Postinstall" group.  The install OS, Copy Scripts, Configure, Inject Drivers, Next Phase, and Restart Computer tasks all execute successfully, then the MDT-initiated reboot
completes successfully.  There is nothing else helpful in the SMSTS.LOG, these are the last entries in the log:
Successfully complete the action (Restart Computer) with the exit win32 code 0
    Sending status message
Executing in non SMS standalone mode.  Ignoring send a task execution status message request
Set a global environment variable _SMSTSLastActionRetCode=0
Set a global environment variable _SMSTSLastActionSucceeded=true
    Expand a string %_SMSTSMDataPath%\Logs
    Deleting file without retrying
The error message on the reference computer says, "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown" along with "An existing in-progress deployment was found but is not in an expected state.  Would you like to ignore this in-progress
deployment and start a new one?"
I have found one post that suggested modifying customsettings.ini with  HideShell=Yes, which I tried.  It didn't help.
I am not sure why MDT thinks the reboot was unexpected?  Has anybody run into this?  What steps can I take to narrow down the problem?
    Any help/suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks,
    FP

    Thanks for your reply Phil.
Setuperr.log is empty, zero bytes.  Setupact.log looks good to me, it has these entries at the end:
OrchestrateUpdateImageState: Updating image state from [IMAGE_STATE_UNDEPLOYABLE] --> [Image_State_Complete]
    OOBELdr.exe exiting with code [0x0]...
Process exited with exit code [0x0]
    c:\windows\panther\SetupInfo succeeded.
    c:\windows\panther\setupinfo.
    Windeploy.exe exiting with code [0x0]
    SetupSQM Started
    Panther path is C:\windows\Panther
    SQM not opted in
    SetupSQM is finished
Our image environment was created during an MCS Engagement, so we have the solution pack and there are many variables in customsettings.ini.  I will need to find out how to narrow this down but I'm not finding a log file that tells me where it's choking...
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • SBS 2011 VM regular unexpected shutdowns, unable to find cause.

    Hi,
I have an SBS 2011 virtual machine running on ESXi 5.5 / HP DL380 G7. This particular VM is reporting unexpected shutdowns at regular intervals, at first it happened once or twice every few months but in the last few weeks it has started happening every
    2 days between 1am and 2am.
There are other VM's on this server that are not effected.
The event logs don't report anything suspicious until after the unexpected shutdown when I get the unexpected shutdown errors.
Steps I have taken so far to isolate the issue are as follows.
    1. update the firmware on the HP server.
    2. update ESXi from 5.1 to 5.5
Unfortunately these steps have made no difference. Any idea on what might be causing the SBS 2011 VM and not the others to have this problem? It runs a rather large exchange database and all these unexpected shutdowns are a cause for concern.

    Thanks for the suggestions,
AV updates take place between 7pm and 11pm at hourly intervals (previously hourly all day)
We use Shadowprotect for our backups and an incremental backup it taken on an hourly basis between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, a full backup takes place on a Saturday afternoon.
I've gone through the system logs and tried to compare what's happening at the time of the crash on the days it did/didn't happen and have noted the differences below.
Between 1:00am and 1:30am on a day the server didn't crash there are GroupPolicy Event ID 1500's in the System logs and not much else.
on the days ( this morning ) it did crash there are those same 1500's as well as some Service Control Manager Event ID 7036's in the System logs immediately after a group policy update of 7 objects. The 7036's are as follows.
30/03/2015 1:05:05 AM Service Control Manager
7036  The Portable Device Enumerator Service service entered the running state.
30/03/2015 1:05:06 AM Service Control Manager
7036  The Windows Defender service entered the running state.
30/03/2015 1:05:07 AM Service Control Manager
7036  The Windows Defender service entered the stopped state.
30/03/2015 1:07:05 AM Service Control Manager
7036  The Portable Device Enumerator Service service entered the stopped state.
There are then some more 1500's until 1:25am then at 1:28am I get Event ID 12 The operating system started at system time ‎2015‎-‎03‎-‎29T14:58:12.109999300Z
The application logs seem more promising, see the screenshots below. First where the server didn't crash and second where it did. (crash was at ~1:26am)

I have since removed the certificate 805XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I have not yet removed certificate 114XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
as I get the following error in EMS

There is no unusual performance issues or memory use, there is 76.6GB free on this VM.
