Start up disk full time capsule help

Hi,
My start up disk is full so I bought a Time Capsule to relieve my Macbook Pro, however, I do not know what to do? Do I back up my Pro and then delete my itunes library. I don't feel great about that. Is there any way I can store my itunes library on the Time Capsule and still have access to it on my Mac? Or how best do I keep my library and not use up my memory?

I've been searching for weeks for a solution to my problem. Here's the story I've come across since I installed Leopard on Oct. 26, 2007.
I first installed Leopard on my Early 2006 MacBook and set up Time Machine with a 200GB external FireWire drive. Since then, things have been fine, until Time Machine started deleting the oldest backups. I'm a pack-rat and hated this feeling of losing data. So, I now have a few months worth of backups on my 200GB FireWire drive.
The Time Capsule is released, I finally talk myself into getting one and transferring my old data from the 200GB drive to my 1TB TC.
I did some researching through forums about how to move data from one Time Machine drive to another, so I took the concept and wanted to apply it to my Time Capsule. I made a DMG image of my 200GB drive, in order to move the data. I figured if I can make an image, copy it, and open it on the Time Capsule - all will go smoothly - just as some had mentioned they've done with external drives.
Now, I have a 164GB DMG image of my Time Machine, with no hope in sight of gaining it back. I've tried taking the image, using Disk Utility, and restoring my original 200GB external with the imaged Time Machine data, but whenever I do, I come across error messages.
In Disk Utility, I've done the following steps:
* Disk Image is found on Time Capsule
* I select the 200GB drive and select 'Restore'
* I drag and drop the Disk Image to the 'Image' field
* I drag and drop the 200GB drive into the the 'Restore' field
* Select 'Erase Destination'
* Select 'Restore'
* I get the warning message that I'll erase the drive - I proceed
* I enter my password
Error message pops up:
"Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore."
I select the image in Disk Utility, then proceed with the following steps:
* Click on "Image" then down to "Scan Image for Restore"
* I enter my password
After hours of waiting, I get another error message:
"Unable to scan. (Broken pipe)."
I'm going to see, after transferring the DMG to the Time Capsule, if I can drag-and-drop the files from the Time Capsule drive onto the 200GB hard drive.
IF anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know!

32 updates on this Mac since December 2007 - Hardware, software, OS...
They keep coming at about 6 or 7 a month. Some of them I don't care about, but several are essential. 10.5.3 has been seeded to the testers a couple of times and will probably show up in the next few weeks. Jaguar wasn't worth a d*mn until 10.2.6, Panther about 10.3.4, Tiger about 10.4.4 - I'd say we are ahead or on schedule Too bad I can't get Apple to fix Spaces. I wish they'd focus on what I want but I guess some take more time than others.

Can a full time capsule affect streaming?

I've been experience spotting internet. It is near impossible for me to stream. Around the same time that I stopped being able to stream time capsule told me my disk was getting full. ATT says everything is fine on their end and they suggest it may be my airport/time capsule. Is is possible that a full time capsule could affect my internet and if so, what can I do about it?

As the Time Capsule disk fills up, Time Machine will automatically start to delete the oldest backups to make room for new backups, so the Time Capsule will stay connected longer each hour as it makes evaluations about the data on the drive and how best to handle new backups.
The increased data flow over the wireless (I assume that you are using wireless for Time Machine backups) might tend to slow down the wireless network a bit, but you should not encounter loss of Internet connections on the network.
To see if your Time Machine backups might be the cause of the connection problems, I suggest that you turn Time Machine off for a day or so and watch how the network performs.
If you elect to try this, open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and then open Time Machine to turn the application OFF. Reverse the process when you want to turn backups ON again.
If your connection problems go away when you turn Time Machine off, you have your answer.
If the connection problems remain, (as I suspect they will) then you need to start looking for other causes like wireless interference from another network that may have been recently installed near you, a cordless phone, or a wireless camera/security system at the neighbors.

I just upgraded to iDVD 6 and am trying to burn a DVD. First time it rendered/encoded/burned all night and then some. I got a messsage that start up disk was full and to delete files. It resulted with an incomplete DVD (Moives were on, slide shows not). I freed disk space - Project info shows 2.8 of 4.2GB for project and 35.78GB available. I even used an older theme, thinking that might help. It churned for 12 hours+, and I got the same result (start up disk full/incomplete DVD). I have to deliver 20 copies of this by Friday. HELP!

don't know if this will help you at all but it helped me.. Using WhatSize - 10.3.9 at versiontracker allowed me to see where all my memory was going when I got that same disk full message. I have a new iMac and I didn't hink it was possible to be full up yet but a few of my undeleted iDVD slideshows were taking up gobs of memory... Make sure you empty the trash too... Once I made even more memory available I was able to burn again...

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule. There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up. I did a full reset of Time Machine. I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up. Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

A MacBook will use Time Machine to make local backups so that when connected to an external drive it will backup a lot faster.
to disable this, you must use a command under terminal.
to locate terminal, do a search for it under spotlight (the magnifying glass on the top right corner), should be the first hit.
once under terminal, type the following text exactly:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
hit enter.
you will be asked to input your password, if you do not have a password, you will have to create one before performing this command. after entering your password, hit enter again and close terminal.
in a few minutes the space taken up by time machine should be cleared.

please remember how frustrating it is when asking for help when the helper telling you to type something on the screen when its frozen

when i went into disk utilities and chose to clean my free space i left it over one hour to do its stuff
i came back and there was no progress bar just the box so i quit the program and when i opened mac mail the system just froze i forced quit mail rebooted and blue screen death
Now when free space is being cleaned is it the same as windows dose the utility write lots of 0 on the hard drive then rebbot its self to free the space

Capacity available but still getting start up disk full message

I got the start up disk full message a few days ago. I did command i and ran Omnisweeper and deleted all the large files. I now have over 50% available capacity but my Mac is still running on slow and I still get the start up disk full message....and request to force quit.
Any thoughts on what I can do. Run idefrag?

Remove McAfee. It is only necessary if you run Windows.
Early 2008 models were not Intel CoreDuos. They might a have been Core2Duo, but not CoreDuo.
Your model if the serial number is correct, which I verified with:

is indeed a Core2Duo Early 2008 model by serial number.
Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to verify you have a Core2Duo and not a CoreDuo, otherwise you are getting your serial number and processor information from two sources that got wrongly combined.
An Early 2008 model can upgrade to Mavericks and Mountain Lion. It can also install any version of Snow Leopard that is retail, and not system specific with a Mac model name on it. So your issue with file space is likely due to something else you installed. Not a virus per say, but probably something that eats up a lot of temporary space. I would run the machine overnight in screen saver, not energy saver model to ensure the logfiles get properly cleaned up. I'd temporarily turn off any backup software. And the next time you shut down, make sure not to leave any applications open, by checking command-tab that the Finder is the only open application before shutting down or restarting.

Cannot access disk in Time Capsule after updated to 7.4.1

I have a macbook pro and a PC(MS Vista), both connect to the Time Capsule via LAN.
After I updated the Airport Utility to 7.4.1 in PC several days ago, I could never access the disk in Time Capsule via PC, it always said "Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the login information or contact the disk's administrator". However, everything is fine when I use macbook to access the disk.
I tried to reset the password, tried to access with disk password or with accounts, but nothing worked.
Whatever the password I changed to, it always show the same dialog.

I had the same problem.. Updating to 7.4.2 seems to have solved the problem, for me anyway. There seem to be a lot of posts about people noticing network slow downs. Can't say I have, but currently I can't access my printer attached to the USB port on my TC from my PC. My iMac can print to it no problem. Bought printer after update installed. If someone can point me in the right direction of solving that problem that would be great.

Start up disk full--computer will not boot.

Our Mac gives a "start up disk full" error message and freezes on the blue screen after the password login. Resetting did no good, and entering safe mode only allows it go one step further but without any icons. Unfortunately, we are traveling overseas and do not have a boot disk to use. Is there a way to boot the computer, with a full start up disk, in order to resolve the issue without using a separate boot disk?

If you have files on the drive you can delete then you can try this:
Boot into single-user mode by holding down the COMMAND and S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white type. Once it stops scrolling you should see a prompt with the cursor. Enter the following:
/sbin/fsck -fy
Press RETURN. If you receive a message that says "***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way. If you were successful then enter:
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /Users/username
Replace "username" with your admin account's username or shortname. Press RETURN after each command line.
You may navigate into any one of your folders located in the Home folder which include:
Desktop
Documents
Downloads
Movies
Music
Pictures
by using the 'cd' command. For example, to move into your Documents folder:
cd Documents
ls -al
This moves you into the Documents folder then lists the contents of the folder. Press RETURN after each command line.
To return to your Home folder enter:
cd ..
which moves you up one level in the hierarchy. To delete a file enter:
rm -rf "filename"
where "filename" is the name of the file you want to delete. For a whole folder it's the same command only use the folder's name instead of the file's name. The quotes are use for names that have spaces in them.
If you are able to delete some large files this will free up space on your hard drive.
To restart the computer normally enter:
reboot
Be careful to enter commands correctly because in single-user mode you can permanently screw things up if you aren't careful what commands you enter. I suggest you print this out so you will have everything at your fingertips for verification.
Alternatively, find an Apple retailer and see if they will fix things for you, perhaps install a larger hard drive.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable. If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it. Time Machine can access it either way.

Missing disk in Time Capsule

Hi, everyone.
This is my first post. I bought a 500G Time Capsule April 2008 and suddenly I cannot mount my disk when my Time Machine is doing a back up.
I contact my local distributor and what they told me is that Apple would replace it with a new one.
My concern is how to recover my files.
Please provide some ensights.

Actually, I don't think you have a problem. You are not suppose to be able to mount the TCs hard disk during a backup since it is "in use" during the backup process.
You see, the Time Capsule is not your ordinary external hard disk. It is a Network Attached Storage device. (NAS). As such, it operates best when it is doing one thing at a time. That is why it's not a good idea to store other files/folders on the TCs hard disk other than the Time Machine backups.

Here is Apples’ line on this: “Time Machine works best if you use your backup disk only for Time Machine backups. If you keep files on your backup disk, Time Machine won’t back up those files, and the space available for Time Machine backups will be reduced.” [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11430.html]
This hasn't stopped some from successfully partitioning Time Machine hard disks and storing data on the other partition. As long as the Time Machine backup has its' own partition, you avoid any potential opportunities for conflict.
However, this is not an option for Time Capsule users as there is no easy way of partitioning the Time Capsules’ internal hard disk without elaborate effort. Granted, the Time Capsule is advertised as being able to perform both as a Time Machine backup destination and as a shared network drive.
Nevertheless, some have experienced problems with maintaining files/folders occupying the same disk as Time Machine backups. In this case, they use the Time Capsule hard disk solely for Time Machine backups. Then attach an external hard disk to the Time Capsules USB port and store additional files there. This added disk will still be available to all Macs that can access the Time Capsule. (Note though, that any USB disks attached to the USB port of the Time Capsule can not then be backed up to the Time Capsule via Time Machine. Time Machine will only backup your Macs internal hard disk or any external hard disks physically attached to the Mac. Time Machine can not backup one remote device to another remote device.)

That;s really not enough free space... you can use a tools such as OmniDiskSweeper to find out where your large files reside and begin pruning (or copying to an external if they're files that you want to keep).
One thing is certain - if you're going to continue your current usage you're certainly going to need to install a larger boot drive.

Why can't I use iDisk for a back-up disk for Time Capsule?

G'Day All,
I am new to apple and mostly am loving it! Being new to this product has me asking some basic questions, like ... why can't I use iDisk for a back-up disk for Time Capsule?
Here I have something like 20 gb disk space available, but it seems I need to buy an external hard drive (or an airport) in order to use, what I believe is one of apples greatest inventions, the Time Machine...
Can anyone correct my flawed understanding or, better yet, teach me how to do it properly?

That was true of some of the ones made a couple of years ago (many of which Apple replaced way beyond the warranty period, and even some beyond the 3-year AppleCare period). Presumably Apple has fixed the power supply problem in the newer units, so they'll last longer.
If you don't have AppleCare for your Mac, I'd strongly suggest buying it. If you do, and buy a TimeCapsule, Airport, or other accessory within 2 years, it's covered, too.
But unless you need a wireless router, yes, paying for one in a Time Capsule doesn't make sense. A good external HD is a much better buy.
