Start Up disk problem following kernel panic-mounts but not as a boot drive

I have a problem that I can't solve.
Dual processor G4 with 3 hard drive, all of which are bootable drives with 10.4.7 installed:
A- my primary boot drive - internal SCSI drive (Adaptec PowerDomain 2930U PCI card);
B - internal hard drive that came with the G4; and
C - external Firewire hard drive
Recently, I booted into my B drive and it locked up after it went into sleep mode. On reboot, I experienced a number of kernel panic messages, prompting me to restart my computer.
PROBLEM: Since that time, I have not been able to get my A drive to once again be the Startup Disk.
Diagnostic steps that I have performed:
i. I have run and re-run Disk Warrior from a bootable CD and the A drive as well as the other 2 hard drives mount and are "repaired" by DiskWarrior.
ii. TechTools Pro shows no hardware problems and whatever glitches it has found were repaired.
iii. Disk Utilities consistently returns "Volume passed verification."
iv. Zapped the PRAM
The A drive does mount and is accessible whenever either the B drive or the C drive is the bootable drive.
System Preferences/Startup Disk lists the A drive as a candidate whenever either the B drive or the C drive is the bootable drive. However, when the A drive is selected in System Preferences, on reboot, it doesn't become the boot drive.
I have tried to restart and hold the "C" key down so that I might possibly be able to select the boot drive from A, B or C. But the C key method doesn't produce the intended result, only reverting back to the boot drive in power prior to the reboot. That occurs whether the boot drive is B or C.
At that stage, rightfully or wrongfully, since the problem persisted whether the B or C drives were the startup disk I concluded that the problem could be hardware related and not software related.
On one of the reboots following the kernel panics, a Crash Report was produced - the verbiage
which is code related and so far above my knowledge and experience that it is incomprehensible to me. I can post it separately if helpful but it won't fit in this email message due to restrictions on length of messages.
I haven't had a kernel panic following any of the last 50+ restarts that have accompanied my attempted diagnostics.
Finally, I ran the Apple Hardware Test, version 1.2.6, that came with my G4. First, I removed all peripherals except the monitor, keyboard and mouse (plugged into the keyboard), the Adaptec SCSI card, and a 3rd party FW/USB2 PCI card (OrangeLink+). I ran the Extended Test and an error code was generated during the logic board test: Error Code fire/5/2
That gave me some hope. I next removed the 3rd party FW/USB2 PCI card (OrangeLink+) and re-ran the Apple Hardware Test and no error were reported. Both the logic board and memory passed. I ran the extended test twice, each time no error.
Ah, did that solve my problem? I rebooted and I still cannot get my A drive to be the Startup Disk.
Next, I ran the Rember software (a GUI app for Memtest) and the RAM checked out as fine.
At this stage I don't have a clue. The white towel is about to be waved.
If the problem is the Adaptec SCSI card, I don't know how to test it since it obviously has to be installed to enable drive A to mount.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am the original poster on this thread.
Turns out that the culprit behind all my boot problems was the battery on my 5 year old Quicksilver G4. Replaced the battery and all is back to normal.
FWIW, for any Quicksilver owners with SCSI cards, be aware that you can create boot problems for your SCSI drive by zapping your PRAM. As part of my diagnostics I did zap the PRAM but that turned out not to be a problem.
Adaptec's site does include a workaround should you have problems after zapping the PRAM. This specifically covers the PowerDomain 29160 SCSI card/2930U card, which I have.

  • Problem with kernel panic message - Cannot boot from disk or usb

    Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if someone could help me with a problem I've been trying to tackle for the last few days. I have a 24" iMac 2.33 Ghz Dual Core, with 2 gigs of RAM. A couple of days ago my computer crashed, and when I tried to boot up again I got the infamous grey screen kernel panic message ("You need to restart your computer..."). What's worse is that I get the same message when I try booting from my external drive and the installation disk itself.
I've basically planned on formatting since it's been a while anyway, but since I can't boot from my external drive or the installation disk that came with my computer these are not options at the moment. I can only get into the computer via safe mode. I've used disk utility to verify the disk, and it comes up with no errors. Anyways, I'd really appreciate if anyone had any advice on this. I've scoured the internet for advice about kernel panic messages, and they all suggest booting from disk or external drive etc., which is not a possibility for me right now.
    Thanks

If you get a panic when trying to boot from the installation disc, and the disc is not scratched or dirty, then you have a hardware fault.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to bare metal from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Mac Pro kernel panic, RAM does not seem to be problem

My Mac Pro (late 2006) now has kernel panics at startup. Problem first happened while computer was in sleep mode, a second kernel panic happened about 10-15 minutes after reboot the first time. Now it happens at startup every time. Zapped PRAM multiple times to no effect. Tested original 10.4 install disk, as well as 10.5 and 10.6 upgrade disks with all external connections removed and from a cold boot. The 10.4 disk causes the kernel panic every time. The 10.5 and 10.6 disks do too, if the C or D key is depressed. The upgrade disks will hang in a gray screen (10.6) or pale blue screen (10.5) with no keys depressed--computer keeps running but fails to boot. Also tested the RAM (4 X 512 MB) in different combinations of one pair in the top riser board (and switched risers, and removed lower board completely). All resulted in kernel panics. Next option?

To anyone finding this thread in the future looking for help on a similar problem, the CNet forums Mac section gave me the correct advise: replace the video card. The stock GeForce 7300 was causing the kernel panics. I replaced it with a Radeon HD 3870, from eBay, and everything went back to normal operation. (I did also have to upgrade my OS for the new card to work properly.)

  • Installed Yosemite...now my MacBook pro won't start up. Keep showing "Kernel Panic!" HELP!

installed Yosemite and now my MacBook pro won't start up. Keeps showing "kernel panic"
    PLEASE HELP ME!

If you can't start up and log in in the usual way, try in safe mode.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Log in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. If you have only one account, you are the administrator.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode.
If you're able to log in, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

  • HELP! Problem with KERNEL PANICS!

    Hi everyone!
I have a serious problem with kernel panics - it doesn't seem to be connected with a certain type of program, but seems to be completely random. I have reinstalled my OS X and updated it, but the kernel panics just keep on coming and if possible it actually seemed to make matters worse! Now it doesn't always show the bar at the top of the screen when I turn it on, and sometimes programs like iTunes and Safari, just won't work until I restart the mac. I've also done a harware test - no faults detected. I had an idea that it might be AutoCad causing it, as it started sometime after I installed it - it was also the first program I reinstalled after OS X reinstallation - but I haven't used the AutoCad a whole lot and the panics happen way more often.
I am completely at a loss now as I'm not exactly a computer expert. If anyone can deduce something from my most recent panic log which could help me find out what's causing all this, I would greatly appreciate it!

If anyone can deduce something from my most recent panic log which could help me find out what's causing all this, I would greatly appreciate it!

at least that the operator has confirmed to me that he called me. I also have problems with either the start of the mac with the power off. I can not understand if it crashes or is just very very slow.
Finally, I have a problem with the external hard disck. I often said to have been ejected incorrectly (not true) and I start to restore the startup recovery disk because disk utility is ineffective from the normal operating system .. is a shocking thing, but how you reduced. in four years it had never happened. seem to have windows or worse. Wake up.
I am an Italian, alas, and then I would like an answer to my language because my € are the same as German French or English.

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).
Once you are using the "Firefox" button ...
Use the "Alt" key to view the menu bar (temporarily) containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help. On Windows 7 and Vista, the menu bar was hidden by default in Firefox 4 and above. These menu items are more or less available under the "Firefox" button which has the most used of the built-in Firefox menu items available in a different format.
To get back to having menus again. "Firefox" button -> Options (second column) -> (check) Menu Bar
You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. I recently had a kernel panic in which I think my hard drive only had so much space left after I ran a bunch of drivers I thought I needed. I uninstalled all and moved files. For some odd reason I'm not getting sound of of my hdtv/monitor.HELP? I uninstalled all the drives and apps I download. I moived files either to trash if not needed, and others to other external drives. I went into disk utility and did a repair disk permission and verify disk. Clean out junk files. Now my hdtv/monitor does not give me any sound, nor does my mac mini. Can someone please tell me what to do?

    What drivers?

  • Kernel panic after system update - can't boot :(

    Hi
I've applied some pending updates to the system while restarting my MBP (I'm not sure, but it probably has contained the update from 10.6.3 to 10.6.4) but now it won't boot - I get a kernel panic.
When I boot instead using an external USB drive with a 10.6.3 installation on it, I get the message about the panic (below).
Any ideas how to solve this would be VERY MUCH appreciated.
    Thanks!

Kappy, I have various bluetooth devices (headset, wireless wacom tablet, etc) that I use from time to time, but the kernel panic happens very early in the boot process.
When I tried booting in safe mode (holding shift), I got the panic much sooner, but of a different type now:

  • Renaming datafiles in control files with database mounted but not open

    Hi,
I moved a database (physical files) from one server to another. I need to modify the contents of the control files since the directory structure of the servers are not the same (and I can't change that).
I know I can use ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE to produce a script that I can than modify and run with the instance started, database mounted but not open, and that will recreate the control files. I don't want to do that.
I was also told I can modify the datafile entries in the control files by starting the instance, mounting but not opening the database. Then I can issue the (this is the part I need help with) ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE <file1> to <file2>. When I tried this it complains that <file1> is not found. Obviously the command I used is not the right one,,, what is the right command for what I want to do.
    Thanks,
    Gabriel

  • Mac Version of PS6 Will Not Launch if Scratch Disk is Not Set to Boot Drive

Mac OS 10.8.2. PS6 will not launch unless the boot drive is set as the number one option for the scratch disk. Even if I choose another internal drive and set it as the number one option for PS6 it will not launch. Is there any kind of work around for this? My boot drive is only a 120GB SSD so I don't want to use it as the main scratch disk.

Curt good idea but no go. This is a fresh install of PSCS6. I ran the Apple Disk Utility three times and Disk Warrior on the boot drive. If I leave the Scratch Disk set to the boot drive no issues, only if I change the order of the scratch disk or if I do not have the boot drive selected as a possible option for the scratch disk.
Where is the 'ignor ownership' option found? I did a 'Get Info' and I don't see it in that window.
