Start up failure, wireless keyboard

I did an automatic update of ITunes, it went to a restart button, I clicked to restart, and the G5 (6/04) restarted as far as the Apple with moving circle, then a blue screen with the moving circle, then a blank blue screen with a pointer. No startup chimes. I could not reboot from the install disc by pressing C, but did a successful hardware check that found no problems. Then I reset the Pram. I've read this site, tried all the suggestions, but get no response--no safe mode, no boot from TechTool, no response when I press the different combinations of keys suggested, no chimes. It occurred to me that perhaps my bluetooth keyboard became unrecognized? I tried hooking up a firewire between my MacBook and the G5, but no response either. Any suggestions?

When your computer was last working, was the volume muted? Whatever the computer's volume is at shutdown will be the volume of the chime at startup.
If the volume had indeed been muted, the absence of the startup chime is nothing to worry about. Otherwise, it's an indication of some sort of hardware failure.
Also, try using a wired keyboard. I don't think that startup key-combinations usually work with wireless keyboards.

  • Wireless Keyboard Function Keys Always On

    Hi,
I just started using my wireless keyboard and noticed that the function keys are always activated, making it impossible to turn up/down the volume, etc. How do I go back to regular mode?

    check it
"I installed the keyboard update and unchecked "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" in Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences and everything works perfect. This is on a G5 Tower.

  • Wireless keyboard initially works with macbook pro, but then freaks out!

i just started using a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse with my 2-year old macbook pro, and while it all initially pairs up and works fine, after about 10 minutes weird things start happening.....like the tilda button seems to suddenly get stuck and repeats itself until i push it down, or my browser windows starts jumping to fill the screen. it still keeps working, but the freaking out on my screen gets worse.
i first unpaired first the keyboard and then the mouse to see which was causing the problem, and it seems to be the keyboard that's the culprit. the battery level seems to be fine, and as i said it seems to be paired correctly when i double check it under bluetooth in sys pref. also checked the keyboard viewer in sys pref and that seems to be working ok. i've done some searching on apple support and in discussions but can't find any similar situation. (also couldn't find a discussions category for keyboard, or would have posted this there)
i would greatly appreciate anyone's thoughts/suggestions on this!

I am having a similar problem with the wireless keyboard. Initially it will work, but then I'll come home and my computer speakers will be beeping because the wireless keyboard is trying to type something from across the room. Additionally, when I try to use my regular onboard keyboard when this happens, its impossible because the wireless keyboard is constantly typing something. My only way around this is to turn off wireless keyboard and only turn it on when I need it. Please post back with your results. Any ideas of how I can fix this?

  • My resolution of Apple wireless keyboard failure.

I’ve seen a lot of posts on this Forum pertaining to wireless keyboard disconnect problems. There are many, many suggestions for how to resolve (rebooting, removing plists, updating firmware, suspicions about Leopard, disconnecting all USB devices, etc., etc.), and none that I’ve read about seem to do the trick consistently/reliably.
Rather than posting this tale at the end of another topic, I thought I’d post a new topic indicating my problem/resolution. First of all, I have an iMac, 20”, Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB, running Leopard 10.5.5. This was purchased Oct. 2006 and I have the wireless white plastic keyboard (which includes the numeric keypad) and mighty mouse. Over the past 2 years the wireless keyboard and mouse have worked very reliably, until recently. Several weeks ago my keyboard disconnected unexpectedly and I had a tough time getting it back “online”. I did all the logical things: replaced batteries, rebooted, removed plist files, made sure all software/firmware was up to date, etc. In some cases in trying to pair it, it would be seen, I would type in the passcode, it would connect, but only to disconnect shortly thereafter. Finally, it stayed connected and I thought I was home free.
Then, yesterday it disconnected again. I did all the things done previously to no avail. This time the keyboard was never seen. i.e., I never got to the point where the Bluetooth Assistant asks for a passcode, it just never saw the keyboard. By the way, the keyboard light blinked when I turned it on just like it should, and I should mention that throughout this process, my Apple wireless mouse worked fine.
At this point I decided, enough! Fortunately, I live close to an Apple store so I made an appointment to talk to a “genius”, which I did this morning. I brought in my computer and wireless mouse and keyboard. Since the mouse worked fine, I was convinced the problem was with the keyboard, but I brought in my iMac just to make sure the problem wasn’t there.
With the access to other wireless keyboards, Macs, etc.) available at the Apple store, it was pretty easy to trouble-shoot the source of the problem. My keyboard would not pair with another Mac in the store, but my iMac would pair just fine with a different wireless keyboard. My batteries were fine so the problem was obviously some sort of failure with my keyboard. The genius guessed the Bluetooth antenna went bad.
Even though my system was out of warranty, the genius told me I could buy a replacement keyboard at a discounted price of $45, which I did. So, that is my “resolution”. Not quite as satisfactory as finding some sort of magic bullet that would fix my old one, but I now have a working wireless keyboard, at a fair price, and I can quit tearing my hair out trying a myriad of unproductive “fixes”.

    Hi there!
Just received brand new iMac 21" yesterday. Unboxed it, turned it on and none of both bluetooth devices (keyboard and magic mouse) managed to get paired.
I was able to connect a USB mouse to log into the Mac. Did all turn off/on Bluetooth, turn off/on iMac several times with no luck. Weird thing is that when I lift keyboard on a 30 degree angle above my desk it seems to actually pair with the iMac but then when back to original position it disconnects.
I've tried the magic mouse with my 2008 Macbook and works flawlessly. After several attempts never managed to pair magic mouse with iMac and as said earlier keyboard is not working on a standard position on my desk. It is frustrating to have paid close to 2,000$ for something that does not even work out of the box... Any ideas or suggestions?
I'm planning to take it today to nearest Apple Stores but have a bad feeling about "genius" folks being able to help me out. Would be worth changing iMac for new one?
    Thanks a lot in advanced!

My wireless keyboard no longer connects with my iMac since changing the batteries. It now shows as not connected, not paired and not configured. A friend recently connected his iPad to the iMac and since then the problem started. Any ideas to resolve this?

a friend told me that he wants my os x cd for my macbook pro to upgrade his imac.
The discs that come with your Mac are "machine specfic" and cannot be used on another Mac.

  • I keep getting a "can't find a wireless keyboard" message at start up, but I am using a usb keyboard.

I have an imac and at start up I get an error message saying "can't find wireless keyboard" and it tries looking for one via bluetooth.  Unfortunately I only have a usb keyboard, which doesn't seem to register.  I can't type my log in details in so I can't use my computer.  I have tried changing the usb port the keyboard is plugged in to, I have restarted, and I have tried an SMC re-boot.  The keyboard does work on another computer (the one I'm writing on), but I can't get it to register on the imac.  Any suggestions?

iMac from 2008 and I am pretty sure its 10.6.8, but not positive because now the computer won't even get past the grey apple screen.

  • Logitech mouse started to lag after connecting Apple Wireless Keyboard

    Hi,
I'm using Logitech Anywhere MX mouse with Logitech unifiying reciever on my iMac and everything was working perfectly fine until I have
recently bought an Apple Wireless Keyboard. For some reason after connecting the keyboard to my iMac my mouse started to lag.
I'm not sure how this is connected to each other as keyboard is bluetooth and mouse is wifi but at this stage I wish that my cable keyboard
    would never broke.
My whole Mac OS X software is up to date and so are the Logitech drivers (Control Center). Is any of the users expriencing such issues ?
    Any advices ?
    Regards,
    Jakub

Thank you for your reply, I have repaired the device but it didn't helped, but switching USB ports seems to do the work, although not sure why Anyways - thank you very much!

  • Wireless keyboard and Wireless Mighty Mouse failure

    Hello,
I have just bought an iMac 20" with a wireless keyboard and wireless mighty mouse.
Both the keyboard and mouse will not work properly.
I followed the installation/setup instructions and paired first the keyboard and then mouse. Then the problems started.
    1. Mighty Mouse tracking is dreadful and very slow (even after adjusting mouse properties)
    2. Keyboard started to drop connection and then when awoke started repeating keys (as if key stuck)
    3. Keyboard then disconnected and will not be recognised when searching for Bluetooth devices nor can I pair it again.
    4. When both were working the Airport extreme wireless network would be lost (but I think that this is a red-herring and irrelevant)
Interesting once keyboard stopped working the wireless mouse tracking improved.
The only software I have installed since taking the iMac out of the box are (in order)
    - Running/installing all Apple updates (including firmware 1.1)
    - Installing Firefox 2.0
    - Installing Adobe Reader 8.0
    - Installing Stuffit Reader 11.0
    - Installing Canon Bubble Jet Printer driver
    - Installing latest version of Skype
If I use a USB mouse or keyboard they work ok.
This is the second replace imac within 2 weeks. The first had the same problem.
Can anybody help please as I'm new to Mac's after switching from a PC and I do not want to have to chuck either the keyboard or mouse or have the pain of Apple supplying me with a 3rd replacement iMac

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Congrats on the new Mac.
Did you Repair Disk Permissions after the software updates and installs?
Whether this solves this issue for you, it is something that you should always do. Go to Apps/Ut5ilities/Disk Utility and select your OS X HDD. Press Repair Permissions. Run Repair Permissions until no more repairs are reported.

  • Starting mac with new OS and non paired wireless keyboard

h\How do yopu set up an iMac with a new OS installed and with a wireless keyboard?

First make sure the batteries aren't dead and that the keyboard hasn't already been paired with another device. If it hasn't, the keyboard should pair automatically when you reboot. You may have to press and hold the power button on the right side of an Apple keyboard until the LED starts flashing.
    Otherwise see these support articles:
Mac mini (Mid 2011 and later) and iMac (Late 2012): Bluetooth keyboard may not pair during Setup Assistant
Apple Wireless Keyboard: Difficulty during pairing process
If you have a third-party Bluetooth keyboard, you may need a wired keyboard to complete the pairing process. It's a good idea to keep a cheap wired keyboard and mouse or trackball as backups for a desktop Mac anyway, because Bluetooth isn't completely reliable.

  • I have just replaced my mac mini because previous motherboard was damaged. I want to pair with my existing wireless keyboard and mouse but can only pair with thebold mac mini which will not start. Any ideas?

See title. How do I unpair a wireless keyboard and mouse when the previous paired mac mini is damaged and will not start?

You should be able to go to System Preferences -> Keyboard and System Preferences -> Mouse and discover the bluetooth devices.
Also, do you have a bluetooth icon on the top bar of your mac?  Should look sort of like this:
If you can figure out which device is which (by trial and error, if nothing else), you can connect to them on this menu.

Try resetting the PRAM (if you are able to do so).
Otherwise, I would take it in for diagnosis.

  • Strange failure of wireless keyboard

The wireless keyboard on a Mac I support has failed, strangely.  Some keys work correctly. The single-quote key does nothing. But clicking the "g" key will result in a single-quote appearing -- usually many of them, repeating endlessly --or as long as I could wait-- until I press anither key.  Sometimes the single-quote appears singly while typing a string completely unrelated characters.
This an aluminimum keyboard, product ID 0x239, firmware revision 0x50, supplied with a mid-2010 iMac Core i3 3.06GHz (imac11,2).   No physical damage seems to have preceded this problem.  The keyboard appears to be connectiong normally. Tried putting in new batteries.  Checked Universal Access for keyboard: everything is off.  The wireless Apple trackpad used with this iMac is, meanwhile, functioning normally.
Choosing "Setup Bluetooth Keyboard" at the bottom of the Keyboard Control Panel leads to an endless unsuccessful search, which seems strange, but maybe this fails because this keyboard is already connected (linked?  paired?) -- or because the keyboard is crazed and not responding consistently.
What's the best way of proceeding?   An old wired keyboard I connected to the system works fine.
But the owner prefers the smaller, wireless type.   I have a spare wireless keyboard that came with a Core i5 iMac that's in  operation on a nearby desk.  If I understand correctly, that keyboard was delivered pre-paired with the Core i5 machine.  Is it worthwhile de-pairing it and then attempting to pair it with the Core i3 machine?     If that combination works correctly, then I'd guess it is time to declare the failing keyboard hopelessly demented and put it in the recycling bin.  Yes?   Or, what?
I'm a hardware/software tekkie, but I don't know anything about Bluetooth or these keyboards.
    TIA

To add to this discussion and maybe to help others. Over the past 6 months I have been having on and off problems with the Apple BT keyboard and number pad. Sometime it will not responde and other times all I would get are the strang charactors. Other have seen both on this keyboard as wel as the keyboard on Macbooks.
There has been a couple of course of actions that people found to resolve the issue. One is to turn off the computer and then restart, this cause the keyboard to reconnect with the computer which may or may not fix the problem. Other had luck doing a PRAM reset on boot up. Other simple just unpair and repaired the keyboard. I personally just pull out the battery for a 5 or 10 seconds and then put them back in and power up and it will repair and reconnect and the problem goes away. I personally think this is some sort of BT communication software stack issue, I have seen similar issue on cell phones with BT devices. Somehow the BT connection gets corrupted and the only way to clear it is to disconnect/remove power and repair the device.
If the above has not solve the problem then you have to look at the hardware. Some people reported that their keyboard was dirty and keys were sticking specifically the cmd and control keys which make sense since they are the lowest on the keyboard and dirt will migrate there. Since the key travel is so small it make sense to clear your keyboard often to get the dirt and dust out of it.

  • New iMac wireless keyboard and magic mouse dropping connections

Hi looks like I am just another one who's got problems with Apple's wireless keyboard (KB) and magic mouse (MM).
I bought my iMac 21.5 at the beginning of last Dec. For the first few days, I noticed that the connection between MM and iMac dropped perhaps once a day when I was editing some HD footage in iMove 09. I am rather new to Mac so initially I thought iMove was dominating CPU power hence the temporary drop.
But in the next few days, I found my MM dropped connection a bit more frequently like 3-4 times a day, during word processing, browsing in Safari or even when I am doing nothing. Plus I also noticed that the KB began to have the same problem as well. Well, in all cases the communications resumed almost instantly or shortly after I clicked MM or a button on the KB. It's only the on-screen notices are very annoying....
The situation got worse in the final week of 2010, the connection (both MM and KB) dropped more frequently and sometimes communication didn't resume instantly, instead the Bluetooth Setup Assistant pops up searching for available devices....and then finally connected. Annoyed by this I took the MM to the retailer and swapped for a brand new one (from a boxed iMac), came home and hey! problem solved! but just for a MERE few hours.
On the last day of 2010, after a couple "rounds" of drop-and-reconnect I was hit by the "Bluetooth Not Available" problem after a connection failure. Left it for some moments and no sign of recovery at all! Luckily and ironically I plug in my wired USB Microsoft mouse so that I can still navigate, went to System Preference and found the Bluetooth icon disappeared as if no Bluetooth hardware was ever installed at all! OK, turned off the iMac from the menu, waited and restarted. No joy and scary enough, I can't even get into the system coz I got log-in enabled but without a working KB to enter my password. Without a choice I dug out my netbook PC, arrived in this forum and found I wasn't the only one. Followed instructions here, did a SMC reset, PRAM reset, etc then magically everything is back! Once back in, I deleted the plist, deleted devices, restarted, re-favourite MM and KB, etc. The next day, I use the installation disc to perform a hardware check, but no problem found!
But always a but, the problem still persists, so a call to Apple technical support who suggested literally the same thing I've done above and asked me to monitor the problem in case it needs repair. Honestly, I am not keen to do that as the nearest Apple centre is far from me and always busy. Not sure if anyone here can shed some lights on my problem. I needa ensure all channels are exhausted before I bring the thing back to Apple for an inspection as a last resort...
    Many thanks guys

Hi, I post this because this is very similar to what is happening with my new 27in Imac.
Townsville March 05 2011 bought all singing and all dancing 27inch IMac with wireless KB and MM at new reseller grand opening. Straight forward out of the box. First night a kernal panic message and screen shut down and unable to start. Phonecall to apple care got it restarted with the apleoption+pr keys. Fine for a while, then repeated screen freezes watching eye TV.
Persevered, with similar repeated screen freezes. Reset memory for eye TV. Seemed to fix that problem, but during this time also noticed MM and KB were disappearing and not responding, only to come back by frustratingly turning them on and off, waving them near the imac and even turning the imac off and on manually, to have them come back for a while and even dragging out a cable mouse to navigate. Cut a long story short, I hoped it would sort itself. 20 days later while watching eye tv I noticed the mm and kb drop off. Cable mouse found the BT issue you guys have discussed. System Preferences showed no BT at all. Rang apple care. Went through the same drill and identified a hardware problem with BT which should be replaced, and after discussion about the other issues, suggested a replacement would be within range but to talk to the store, cause it was so new, took it back to store where my story was confirmed in a confirmation of the customers story check.....for a while.....
then all reappeared as if nothing was wrong, fortunately it was witnessed by the store, so off it went to Brisbane for the 4 day turnaround. Wednesday the tech rang BT MM and KB all working fine. Further explained all the above, so he has stress tested it and I am informed it is has displayed none of the bad behaviour and is working well and on its way home, hopefully by monday. So will keep you posted. No new mac offered, no replacement BT module offered.
PS I have only ever owned macs, still love them, and scripting this on my mac book, which incidentally, has never missed a beat.

  • Wacom Tablet causes Apple wireless keyboard to stop working.

My Wacom tablet/pen causes my Apple wireless keyboard to stop working.  While working on a photo in Photoshop using my Apple (usb) mouse to make selections the keyboard works fine.  When I use the Wacom Pen to make selections, not immediately but anywhere from five to ten minutes into it, I hear what sounds like a chirp from my computer (Mac Pro) and my keyboard stops working.  The command, option, control and direction keys still work but not the number and letter keys.  I have to connect a spare Logitech keyboard via USB in order to continue and not loose my work.  After awhile I will hear the chirp again and the Apple keyboard will start working.  This will continue to occur at irregular intervals.  Without the spare keyboard I've had to reboot my computer (loosing all the work on the photo) to get the keyboard working again, but only for it to reoccur.  Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated.

The Mac inherently keeps all input methods active, such that you could type alternate keys on alternate keyboards.
If you have third party add-ons that might change the way Bluetooth works, those would be the primary suspects.
Be sure all your Drivers are completely up-to-date, and batteries in battery-powered devices are still strong.
Bluetooth uses the same part of the frequency spectrum (but a different modulation technique) as cheap WiFi Routers, baby monitors, and microwave ovens. if you live in a busy apartment building, there may be very high levels of interference.
