Start up freezing, sometimes blue screen, sometimes gray

Hello! My laptop has problems with starting up, and will appear as a blue screen with only a visible and moveable cursor, or as a gray screen with Apple and turning gear icons. I have tried finding solutions (seeing as others have had similar symptoms) but to no avail. i have not had recent software upgrades.
Not very savvy at all this, but here's what I've done:
-tried Safe Boot, and was able to log in to my (only 1) user. went to blue screen 'image' (i think this is default desktop image-blue with fabric-like gradients) and moving cursor, no icons, no toolbar.
-tried Safe Boot pressing 'Command' and 'V'. showed black screen and long text, with words such as 'excited abnormally: Bad system call', 'respawning too quickly!: throttling', 'too many failures in succession'. i forced a shutdown.
-attempted reset of PRAM/NVRAM. screen showed gray w/ Apple and turning gear icons for over an hour. i forced a shutdown.
-started with Install Disk. with selecting my HD listed as my username, i did a 'Verify Disk'. it came up with 'incorrect number of thread records' and 'invalid volume file count'.
-with Install Disk, did a 'Repair Disk Permissions', which was successful. then, did a 'Repair Disk'. it quit after 3 attempts, stating '1 volume could not be repaired because of an error' which were listed again as the incorrect number of thread records, and invalid volume file count.
-tried start up from my regular HD, but Install Disk was still in. it showed a black screen, repeating the 'excited abnormally: Bad system call', 'respawning too quickly!: throttling', 'too many failures in succession'. BUT, it said 'local host/ i have no name!#' and seemed to want an answer. i made some attempts, typing in my HD name and such, but no avail. had to force shutdown.
-tried Apple Hardware Test using Install Disk and holding 'D'. no problems found. disk ejected.
Now, with a regular start up attempt, i still have just a gray screen w/Apple and gear icons.
Apologies for this long post, but if you have any insight, i'd LOVE to hear it! i am currently very, very far from a Mac store, so I hope this Discussion forum can shed some light. Thank you in advance!

Firstly, the Archive & Install should not destroy your User Data, just give you a new/old OS.
Secondly, 99.99% of the time these updates messing things up can be prevented by maintenance they don't tell you about...
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space, and don't have any Disk Directory problems...

Be sure to use Preserve Users & Settings.
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Start up freezing on Blue Screen

I was installing some 3rd party software for airfoil which required logging out after instillation. The computer when to the blue screen, but the login screen never appeared. I then hard restarted the machine and it now gets to the blue screen and does nothing. The login window will not display.
I have tried booting in single user mode, I have tried resetting the pram, and I have tried fixing it using an OSX 10.4 disc, and neither have worked (I cant find my OSX 10.5 disc).
    What else can I try?

Thanks for your replies Tom. I seem to be back on track. The last update Time Machine did was 4 hours before my laptop went down. I connected my laptop to another computer and copied all the files I had modified during that time over firewire, and then restored my laptop back to the latest backup using the OSX disc. It seemed to hang on the blue screen for a long time and for a moment I though it hadn't worked but the login screen appeared after a while. Everything seems to be back to normal, however when I opened up Mail it said it needed to import all of my 10,000+ emails. Any idea why this is, and where exactly are they being imported from as they wont be on my server anymore?

If nothing else works, you might try this one. It has worked for many others ...
Use iTunes to do a reset to factory default condition. Always be sure to do your backups before fiddling with your iPad. You might do both the iCloud and the iTunes backup, just to be sure!

For all iPad 2 owners, this is an important solution for you! These problems result from long-term use, continuous upgrades, corrupted files and various glitches that happen over this long term use. You just need to get your iPad 2 back to FACTORY FRESH CONDITION to start out clean!
Here's one person's solution which will help a lot of iPad 2 users!

Re: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgradein response to pacoKAS
SOLVED:  IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:
I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.
Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.
THE FIX:  FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device.  Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!
To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now!  :-)
Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.

  • Start up freeze on white screen

My Macbook Pro 15' 2011 Starts up with the Apple logo then after freezes on a white screen. Before it was starting up then freezing in black screen, I restarted the NVRAM and then the computer was working fine and then after a week it froze and heated up in the middle of using it so I shut it down and ever since then it has been starting up with the Apple logo then freezing on a white screen.
I have tried with no success:
    - SMC reset
    - Start holding Shift down - grey loading bar for about 5 mins then freezed on blue screen
    - again NVRAM reset
    Please help!
    Thanks

Your profile indicates your Mac has v10.8 installed.
Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
You should be able to access OS X Recovery where you can repair the startup disk if necessary, or reinstall OS X.

  • Imac shows super weird lines on screen during start up and then freezes at blue screen (WITH PHOTO)

My Imac froze earlier today as I was dragging an image from safari into indesig and when it froze the weirdest pattern overlaid the screen. It looked just like the opacity pattern from photoshop with grey and white squares. I turned the computer off using the power button and unplugged everything.
Now when I try to start it these weird lines appear on my start up screen (see link)...
    http://meijerladdaruppgrejer.wordpress.com/2012/07/24/oops/
as you can see the apple and the wheel appears as normal...
... then it moves to a normal looking white screen (perhaps a bit greener than usual) and around 30 seconds later freezes at the blue screen.
    I've tried the cmd + alt + p + r several times but it won't help.
If i press alt during start up I can see and choose my hard drive but just end up at the blue screen again.
Can I try starting it up in safe mode or something?
    Thanks! Any input is welcome.

Is this the same problem? Verical Lines" seems a bit diffuse. I've seached for a similar question and found a lot of other types of lines and stripes.
    Could this be a solution?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3824?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If so, how do I install the update if I can't get passed the blue screen? Can I start my Imac in safe mode? How?
iMac (Mid 2011): Unresponsive white screen on startup or vertical lines on screen
    Symptoms
In certain circumstances, your iMac (Mid 2011) may become unresponsive on startup, with a white or gray background on the display. You may also notice vertical lines on the display while using your iMac.
    Resolution
Install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update 2.0 if your computer exhibits these issues. To install the update, chooseSoftware Update from the Apple () menu and follow the onscreen instructions.
Important: Do not interrupt the power to the computer while the update is installing. After the update is finished installing, you will need to restart your iMac.

  • Random Freezing and Blue Screen

    I have a 15'' Macbook Pro with a quad core i7 processor.
For months and months now my computer keeps on freezing, randomly (not related to having any particular program open) to a blank blue screen that does not go away.  The only way for me to un-freeze it is close the computer and re-start it or sometimes I have to hold down the power button and shut off the computer.  I've taken it to the apple store probably 5 times for this issue and because they are unable to replicate the issue in the store, they don't know what the issue is.  I had apple hardware test done, a 24-hour diagnostic, and my operating system completely re-installed done but my computer keeps on freezing blue.  Does anyone know why this is?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • IBook G4 Freezes at Blue Screen During Startup.

    iBook G4 933 MHz
    Mac OS X 10.4. Tiger
    640MB RAM
    40GB internal ATA hard drive
Computer boots but then quickly locks up.
If I immediately restart, then the iBook hangs at the blue screen before the Mac OS X progress screen appears.
If I remove the battery and unplug the power cord then allow the computer to sit for at least 30 minutes, able to fully boot, but then the machine quickly freezes up.
I assume the problem is heat related?
    I have so far:
    - Totally disassembled/reassembled
    - Reset PRAM
    - Reset NVRAM
    - Reset PMU
    - Unable to do target disk mode
    - iBook freezes same way when booting to Mac OS X install DVD
Able to boot to shell command line mode no problem.
FSCK reports no issues with the HDD.
Sometimes during startup a fan turns on briefly, but not every attempt to boot.
Yes-- I know about the 'solder' issues with iBook G4 logic boards, but I do not think the above is related. The VGA works fine.
Thanks for any assistance that can be rendered.

After a month, I have been notified by Superior Reball that the logic board has been repaired. I promptly made payment of $35 and the board was shipped back to me on June 17 via USPS Priority Mail Delivery Confirmation. I have received the tracking number and anticipate receiving the package by June 20.
In my situation, well worth the wait for only $35.
Even though I chose to totally disassemble the iBook, Superior will do the disassemble/reassemble for $75.
I would not have done it by shipping the entire iBook, though. With the higher shipping cost, insurance, having to send out the hard drive with no back up, the higher repair cost, etc.-- in the end a prohibitive expense. I could probably buy a used iBook G4 for no more than $200, to put things in perspective.
In summary, Superior Reball had a great price, good enough communication (they answer the phone, but not e-mail) and it looks like fast return shipping. It took a lot longer than the ad states, so I am applying the old 'price, speed, quality-- choose any two' rule here.

  • IBook doesnt start anymore (red, green & blue screens)

Today at college, i just wanted to get my iBook out of the standby and nothing happened. Black screen, just the DVD inside it ran and even the restart buttons didnt work, only taking out the battery brought it down.
Then i restarted it and some grey screens came up, the a full red, a full green and a full blue screen came up, then grey again. Again, restartin via powerbutton didnt work,. only taking out the battery.
Then, after several restarts, it actually started the system and i logged on. After about 2 min the screen dimmed and from the top a black screen came up. Again, only taking out the battery got it down. That repeated several times and now the system isnt eve restarting. Sometimes it actually plays the startup sound, sometimes it just starts the fan but doesnt do anything. Pressing the alt-button worked about 2 times but still, nothing happens. When im home, i will try to insert the system disk (there is still a dvd inside...) and start from the cd but that "not-startin" seems to be a hardware problem.
And there is another problem in solving this one: My FireWire port doesnt work, that blew up mysteriously, but the Geniusses in the AppleStore could only tell me it would cost £550 to replace the logicboard...
Thanks if you got any help.

Well the GPU in the 1.2 GB machine is a ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 these have a tendency to fail. I have one here with a bad 9200. I'm negotiating with a fellow for a used working board and should know this weekend. I have also been looking for a replacement chip since my sources tell me that this chip is also in Compaqs, IBMs and Sonys.
It's also possible that the chip needs reballing. Look for that term in these forums as well as "shim fix'. If that works it could run for a long time with that fix. If not then probably the chip went bad and since the FireWire is bad you might consider a used board. They can be found on eBay for ~ $200 or less.
BTW plugging a bad cable or device into the FireWire can cause it to blow. I have a friends external HD here that has actual scorch marks on the input chips (it also blew the FireWire port on her G4 tower).

  • HT201263 hi i have an iphone 4 im fed up with it it keeps freezing and blue screen i have restarted it every other day for 2 wks now even had it in a phone shop now the screen is blue with a white line down the middle and will not let me switch off after

my iphone 4 has been acting up for 2 wks now every other day it keeps freezing sometimes i can wake it by pressing the 2 buttons tog ive restored it restarted it had it in a shop were they got it back on, saying it was the soft ware, but the same day i got it back it froze again, now the screen is blue once again and it wont let me switch it off n sort it with pressing both buttons and the computer isnt finding it, im fed up i will never have another iphone any ideas anyone please

    Hi @imobl,
You sound like an Apple support guy who hasn't been able to answer my questions.
To respond to some of the points you made,
    - I did not ignore Ocean20's suggestion. If you has read my post, you would have known that I took my phone to the apple service centre where they tried this restore on THEIR machines. I am assuming that Apple guys know how not to block iTunes. So I actually do not understand your point about me trying the hosts file changes on my machine. Do you not believe that apple tested this issue with the correct settings?
    - you also give a flawed logic of why the issue is a hardware issue. You mentioned that If I thought that the issue was with the software, i should try a restore and getting it to work. The problem is that my error (23), and many others comes up when the restore fails. And you would be astonished to know that not all errors are hardware errors. Sometimes even software errors prevent restores. Funnily enough Apple itself mention that 'in rare cases, error 23 could be hardware related'.
    - all Apple has done so far is replicate the issue. I don not know how anyone can conclude that the issue is a hardware issue.
And by the way, I am not certain that this is a software bug. Again if you read my Posts, you will notice I only want a confirmation,/proof that the issue is hardware related as they mention..
Please refrain do. Responding if there is nothing to add.

  • Powerbook G4 (12" aluminum" won't start up (freezes with apple screen up)

I'm on the road, and my Powerbook freezes during startup, with the apple on the white background, but no pinwheel. Tried starting in "Safe Mode", and it got to the pinwheel, then process bar/startup, but froze afterwards before the desktop came up. There's a blank blue screen, and occasional flashes of a pinwheel, but no desktop or mouse arrow. Any suggestions that can be done while traveling and without the startup disks (which were stupidly left at home)? Running OSX Tiger.

  • IMac Freezing Up/Blue Screen

If this was posted in the wrong forum, please move.
Sunday evening, my iMac G5 started freezing up a lot. I was forced to keep restarting my computer. Originally, I thought it was due to Firefox 3 seeing how I just downloaded it a few days prior. I ended up deleting Firefox, but the problem only got worse. After looking online and trying such things as repairing the permissions, I gave in and did a disk install (while keeping network settings and files). Disc 1 install went fine, but everytime I tried to install the contents of disc 2, it would freeze. I decided to just attempt to do a full re-install losing all of my contents of my computer. Finally, while starting in Safe Mode, I was able to finish installing disk 2.
However, now I can't even get on my computer without it going to a plain blue screen (NOT the default wallpaper) and either the spinning pinwheel (I assume it was freezing up) or a curser. There wasn't any dock or any icons most of the time. Occasionally, it does take me to my default wallpaper, but it freezes up before the entire dock shows up.
Everything seems to work fine in Safe Mode, but trying to log into the normal mode always gets me to the blue screen or a frozen screen.
My S.M.A.R.T. said that it was verified. Meanwhile, through the install disk I have been in Disk Utility and I have ran a disk repair and repair permissions. The problems continues though.
I've presented my problem to another message board which had the general thought that my HD was dying and I was in need of a new one. However, I have conflicting reports as another person is saying that my HD is not dying, especially considering the S.M.A.R.T. was verified.
Right now money is tight, so I can't just easily go out and buy a new HD. So I'd like to try anything before giving into that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
If you haven't tried this yet... grab your system restore disk(s). Make sure your Mac is shut down. Now, while holding down the C key, press the power button and insert the disk. Keep holding the C key until you see the Apple logo on the screen. Now, an Installer window will open... ignore that and go up to the Menu and click Utilities/Disk Utility. DU will launch. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, make sure the First Aid button is selected and click Verify Disk. I'm not talking about the S.M.A.R.T status.. this is going to check to see if there are errors on the drive. If DU reports errors, click Repair.
Now, you can't use Disk Utility from the Application folder on the drive, you can only Verify and Repair the disk from Disk Utility on your restore disk(s). If Disk Utility reports errors but cannot repair them then you might want to look into a good disk repair utility such as DiskWarrior
www.alsoft.com or TechToolPro www.micromat.com Neither are expensive.
I understand how important your Mac is to you and I hope this helps.

  • Whenever i start my macbook pro the screen remains gray with the apple symbol and the circle timer below. The screen stays this way even if i leave it for hours.

When i turn on my macbook a box appears telling me i need to restart my computer (in different languages) and in order to do so i have to press on the off button for a lil while. Even after doing this the same box appears and it never restarts correctly. This box appears every single time. I rarely turn my computer off. I just place it on sleep mode and restarts it only when i get prompted to. I brought it to genius and they couldnt figure out what the problem is so i was told it needed to be shipped to get fixed. I didnt have anything backed up. All i want saved are the pictures because i went to 2 events where i was the assigned photographer and i didnt get to save it to an external memory. Genius said that when shipped i cant give instructions like make sure to save the pictures and if they are unable to, call me if they should go on with the process. I was wishful thinking that to fix the problem they might not even have to touch the pictures memory part. I brought my MBP back home hoping it will miraculously starts and id be able to back it up but now all it does when i turn it on is the screen remains gray with the apple symbol and the circle timer below. The screen stays this way even if i leave it on for hours. Please help me fix this!!! cant i really specify to the technicians at apple  to please make sure not to erase the pictures? Is there no other way to turn on my mac? I only need it to work ones.

  • Freezing with blue screen & can't boot from single user mode or disk

My keyboard is wired and plugged directly into my Intel iMac running OSX 10.5.8. I do not have the Leopard disks, but I do have the Tiger disks. I was trying to boot in single-user mode so that I could run AppleJack to try to fix another issue I'm having--I get the light blue startup screen flashed at me several times daily for the past week or so. When the blue screen flashes, it totally freezes my computer (obviously) and lasts from 1-10 seconds. I can't find anything that is triggering it. I haven't installed anything new that I'm aware of, and it happens whether the computer has previously been slept or not. I'm also not using an external display / additional monitor.
Also, for anyone who is nice enough to answer, please explain everything--I'm not an expert user.

Well since it is so time consuming and a security risk to turn off FileVault, I was hoping to hear from someone with more experience if this was the solution, or just something to "try"? Are you speaking from experience or just making a suggestion, leroydouglas? Thanks.

Hey, I recommend backing up all your files manually via USB hardrive and then format your mac's hardrive, here's a link for instructions on how to format your mac's hdd: http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-format-your-macs-hard-drive--mac- 53986
Also I recommend downloading the latest Mac OS X via the app store. The reason why I've recommended to back up all your files and programs manually and install a clean and new os is because when you put your data on manually, you significantly reduce the chances of the problem happening again and it looks like you have something inside your os that's slowing everything down. You'll also have the latest updates and support if you download the latest mac os x. You should also back up your Mac via time machine as well so you have a image of your OS. I recommend installing a SSD drive inside your MacBook as they make a huge difference in performance, your computer will preform almost instantly, it only takes 7 seconds for your mac to boot into the os and everything else you do is pretty much instantly. They can be a little expensive but they're coming down in price and they're with it! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-CT480M500SSD1-2-5-inch-480GB-Internal/dp/B00BQ8R HJ2
I've had the same problem before and I hope that helps.
    Good luck
