Start-up hangs with firewire connected

This problem started when I upgraded to the most recent Snow Leopard (10.6.3).
Hardware: I have a iMac, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I have one firewire 400 port into which is plugged an external Iomega 500GB hard drive, to which two other external FW 400 HD's and one Epson stylus photo R800 printer (firewire) are connected via extra firewire ports on the Iomega drive (it's like a Mac Mini style external HD).
When I boot up the iMac, the screen hangs indefinitely at grey with no further progress in starting up unless I unplug the FW cable from the iMac. Then it instantly proceeds to finish booting up. If I plug in the FW cable before the desktop appears, I can hear all my desktop stuff loading (e.g., chew-toy sounds when my scanner driver loads) but I see no desktop picture or cursor. If I disconnect the FW cable, the desktop appears and all is fine.
The FW port works fine, all the externals work fine, the printer works.
It's just that the startup hangs if that FW cable is plugged into the iMac. Any ideas?

Ann,
I would use the process of elimination to determine which device is causing the problem. I would start with your Epson printer, my rationale is I can't think of any reason to have any printer connected via FW, in fact I'm kind of surprised Epson even put a FW port on it.

Roger

  • Yosemite won't Boot from External SSD with Firewire Connection

Seeking help, I boot from external SSD drives from my 2010 iMac. I recently installed Yosemite on an External SSD with a firewire connection and all went well with the installation and first boot. After completing set up and restarting my iMac Yosemite will no longer boot from the firewire connection it will boot to the loading bar and then get the dreaded Goest Buster Emblem, if I swap out the SSD to USB connection it boots normally. I have 6 SSD Drives with Mavericks and Lion installed on that will boot from the Firewire Connection.  Any suggestions ?

Additionally when testing while the SSD is connected to a USB Connection and booted if I attach any firewire device they are not recognized or connected to the operating system.

  • New iPod with FireWire connection?

When I plug in my new video iPod to the FireWire connection, the screen says "FireWire connection not supported. Please use USB cable." I was just wondering if anyone knows a way to use FireWire with a new video iPod.
    Thanks,
    Geoff
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It is impossible to use firewire to transfer media off your computer to your 5g Video iPod. However you can still use the firewire cable to charge your iPod.

  • How to use 2 devices with firewire connections on new MBP?

I just bought a new Mac Book Pro and I am planning on recording a band with Logic Pro soon. I plan on purchasing an external hard drive with firewire to record the audio to.
My question is I am confused on how I will use both my Firepod (which is a firewire audio interface) and a Firewire external hard drive when my Mac Book Pro only has one Firewire input.
Is there an obvious solution I am not seeing? Could I go from the firepod to the external hard drive to the Mac Book?
Would using the USB ports for the external hard drive make the quality suffer? Thanks for the advice and help!

Is there an obvious solution I am not seeing? Could I go from the firepod to the external hard drive to the Mac Book?
Use a FireWire hub. If the external drive has two or more FireWire ports, it's a hub.
Would using the USB ports for the external hard drive make the quality suffer?
    No, but performance might.

  • SCSM Console Hang with WebEx Connect

I have reviewed all the questions found at this location and although similar setups it looks that there are no resolves.  Here is the setup:  SCSM 2012 sp2 using console and works like a champ.  Installed WebEx Connect and now my SCSM console
hangs when trying to open incidents.  Once I remove the webex connect IM client, SCSM console resumes to normal ops and responses.
All the workarounds say rdp to another workstation, etc and is not a resolve.  Interesting enough both applications play nice with all other apps and work great independently so its hard to decipher which one is the root cause.  My theory is that
they somehow share a dll.  Once this is identified, we can actually get coexistence of these two applications.  They are mainline apps so I'm perplexed at why either vendors have addressed this issue.  It appears to have been going on for the
past year as researched so why isn't anyone doing anything.
Do I have to write a bug request to connect.microsoft.com and then to webex and do their work for them?

    Hi Nick,
Did you put in a request on connect for this? Is this issue resolved for you?

  • Problems with Firewire - Connecting a device to either FCP or iMovie :(

I have been trying (without success) to get video from a MINI DV tape currently inside a Panasonic DVC30 to either my MacBook Pro (2months old) or my iMac (also about 2months old) via a FireWire cable i got of eBay for a fiver.
Neither machine will recognise the camera, in either FCP or iMovie.
I thought it could be my cheap cable, but when I took my MacBook and camera into Uni today, and got the Stores dept to lend me another cable, the same result - nothing. So then i thought my cable could be ok, and maybe it was the Uni camera, so we tried the tame in another Camera, with my cable, still nothing. So then, we tried the 2nd camera, with a new cable, still nothing.
I really do now know what to do. Last week, I managed to get Video off a camera, with a Uni FireWire cable, so i dont think its the FireWire port. I still think it could be this new cable, but the fact that other cable and other camera today failed to show the device is odd.
Someone said it could be a Driver issue, but why? and aslo, if it is, where do i get new drivers from?? I have just updated the software on both MacBook and iMac, but it still doesnt recognise the device (camera) using my FireWire cable in either FCP or iMovie, and so I am stumped.
Can anyone, who knows a lot more than me help? I have used PCs for 20 years, and only recenlty been converted to MACs, but im starting to worry!!
    Cheers
    Neil

Thanks for you reply, but I have already tried that, and when you look at the Firewire in the menu, nothing is coming up. I find it odd that this is happening on both my MacBook Pro and my iMac ?
We tried today, with both a different camera and same cable, and then a different cable and different camera, and none of any of the combinations seems to pick up.
Does this mean that both my MacBook and iMac need new drivers etc?? If it is the Bus, what can be done?
    Many thanks
    Neil

  • Time Machine Starts Backup, Hangs, on USB connected drive

I have been using this same USB-connected backup drive for years. There is plenty of remaining space on it. I start the backup, it backs up for a tiny bit (1.2Mb out of 476MB) and hangs there. No error messages. Nothing. Just won't finish. Any tips on what to do? Have tried again and again, same problem.

  • External Drive not working with Firewire connection

I just purchased a Western Digital My Book external drive. My Mac recognizes it when I use a USB cable but not a Firewire. I have downloaded all the WD updates and firmware.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I was thinking it might be an issue with the drive needing too much bus power. On the newer iMacs, USB provides higher bus power than FireWire. That might still be the issue, even if the drives supply their own power.
Just one Firewire port on my iMac.
I think it has two, but one is FireWire 400 and one is FireWire 800. So you only have one device plugged into those two ports?

  • Thunderbolt-firewire connection

I can not connect my new iMAC 17" computer through Thunderbolt-Firewire cable with my canon camcorder. On my previous iMAC with firewire connection works fine. I am using Pemiere Pro CS6, and now the capture does not work.
    Any thought?

    through Thunderbolt-Firewire cable
It's important to understand that Thunderbolt and FireWire are two different things, with different cables and ports.  Make sure you're using FierWire.

  • Noise glitch with firewire cable

I noticed on one of my projects with FCP that an noise glitch occured with firewire connected for video monitoring, but the noise glitch disappears when the firewire cable is not used and computer audio is used instead. The short split second noise is not on the audio track, but is part of the video track and can be eliminated by turning off the video track. My take on this is that the firewire cable is transmitting a noise glitch when it senses a video irregularity? Anybody else noticing this and is there a fix? This is a problem when recording to tape.

Yep. I've had that happen. I do some editing for a production house that doesn't like to ship the camera masters, so they make dubs to send. Occasionally, when I get a tape that's been used a few times, I get the little glitches. It's like there's 'almost' a dropout in the tape, but not strong enough to see it. And the signal seems like it's strong enough to play by the computer, but when you send it through firewire, it's just too much to stay locked.
I've tried recapturing, but the problem still happens in the exact same spot.
I just have them make new dubs and throw away the tapes and it takes care of the problem. It's not your cable or your system, it's the tape.

  • TS1587 MacBook Pro 13" 2010, only beebs every four seconds when I try to start up. Have tried firewire connect to my iMac, open with utilities CD, pressed all the correct combination of keys during startup. Battery is fully charged. Will not startup!

I am a long time user of Macs. 20+ years.
This is my granddaughters 13" MacBook Pro we purchased for her in 2010 for college.
I have tried everything I know including firewire connection to my iMac while holding the T key, two different utilities CDs (will not open them) and held various key combinations as recommended while start up. Computer just beebs ever four seconds.
Battery is built-in but fully charged.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • Restore from iphone4 itunes backup stops after upgrade to ios6. does it have to do with my computer settings as it starts hanging and cannot connect to the internet anymore either till I restart.

I have the latest version of iTunes and the iOS6 installed on my iPhone4. The restore from my iTunes backup stops at the end of the recovery process though. Do I need to change anything in my computer settings to let it totally finish?

Initially, everything was still working fine then after about a week it stopped connecting to the internet both wirelessly and via ethernet. It was down for about 2 weeks when I started to 'play' with the settings. I don't know what I did, but it worked again. The computer stopped working again about a month ago and I just am now getting to it. I don't know what else to do and why it stopped.

  • I recently upgraded my iMac to 10.9.2 Nothing but problems since. Cannot connect reliably to a mixed pc/mac network at work, hangs at start up, hangs at shut down. Please help!

Can anyone offer suggestions as to why since upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.2 I can no longer access a mixed pc/mac network? Previous to the upgrade, I did not have any problems. Other macs within my office can still access it, so I know it is not a network based issue. It exists in my machine only, and the other matching machine that exists in the office did NOT do the upgrade and has no problems. (Bummer for me)
    I have:
    Reset the PRAM
    Reset the SMC
Turned off the network Wifi and rebooted, then turned it on again, still ridicously slow when I try and connect to shared pc server. I can connect to other macs though.
Seems to alternate between a normal start up time, and a ridicously slow start up time with no apparent connecting reason as to why
I have a shared HP Laser printer on the network that is working with other computers accessing it, perhaps this is the conflict? It is in Wifi mode, but the software is loaded on my computer. However, prior to the upgrade, I had no problems.
My mail crashed shortly after installing 10.9.2, but I did finally get that up and running, but sometimes it loads and tells me that there is "No Mailbox Selected" in the initial opening Mail window. This is new, it never used to do that. I can select "Inbox" and see my mail, but I never used to need this step.
When I try and access the shared network that has always worked previously, it now will not load the shared docs and folders, just sits there, and hangs. Sometimes it will load the folders after about 5 minutes, but will not allow me to open them.
I do not run any virus protection software.
Any ideas? I would be infinitely grateful for suggestions.

Your download or install of the update may have been corrupt. Visit the Mac App Store and re-download the update or visit http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1726 and download the 10.9.2 update combo and re-install.
If that fails to solve the problem please post back and post a EtreCheck Report which you can locate at:

  • No connection with Firewire but will connect and discharge with USB2.0

My 3rd generation 40gb iPod no longer appears on my desktop or iTunes window when connected via firewire. While connected, to 3 different Macs so far, it behaves as if its plugged into the AC adaper- the charging icon appears after a few minutes but will not mount.
However, when connecting with USB 2.0 the iPod mounts fine but it receives NO power, the battery discharges within 5 minutes and shuts off.
I've known about the USB 2.0 problem but never worried about it until, suddenly ( and apparently others are having this problem ) I am no longer able to mount the iPod via firewire.
I've tried resetting in all its various forms including toggeling the hold button and plugging into the AC adapter and I have thoroughly read the trouble shooting pages.
Has Apple "orphaned" firewire? Is the 3rd generation iPod doomed to 5 minute or less connection times? Is this just a glitch that an update will fix?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
    Mirror Doors G4   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

Its not the cable. I have cables and other Macs all over. I've tried the other Macs and different cables plus different cables and diferent dock connectors.
Sorry, I should have mentioned that I already eliminated that possibility.
The firewire problem just started Sep 1, 2006. I'm wondering if the last iPod update that occured the last time I was mounted via firewire initiated the problem. This seems more likely than it might have becuase of other posts complaining of firewire connection problems.
    Thanks for responding though!
