Start up has yellow flashing light -HD running no screen

I just got a blue iMac G3 and on booting it up there is a green light, long yellow, short yellow and green light again. The hard drive is running but there is nothing appearing on the screen. Since I cannot boot it up I don't know what software it has got. Is there a way to get it to turn on properly etc? Many thanks for any help!!

Do the speakers play a sound when you start? If so, what sound is it? Pleasent musical chime (= normal)? Breaking glass/car crash sound (= problem)?
If the computer has been stored off wall power, it probably has a dead PRAM battery (user-replaceable). The following can help in the case of a dead battery until you get a new one
1) See if it will start with the SHIFT key depressed.
2)If that fails to work, press and hold this key combination:command-option-p-r until you hear three normal startup chimes, then release the keys. You may want to figure out how you will hold all four keys before starting it.
Post what happens. If you cannot get it to start, look on the bottom or back of the case. Often there is a label showing processor speed, hard drive size, and amount of RAM originally installed. It may be embossed into the plastic. If you find a code starting with "M" followed by four numbers, that can help us identify the model iMac you have.

I recently purchased a MacBook Air and an Airport Time Capsule.  The Time Capsule does not recognize my old iPhone, my old iPod Touch and my new MacBook Air.  The old AirPort Extreme works perfectly on the network, so I know it's not my internet.  It also recognizes all my devices by name and hooks them up to the internet.  Is the Time Capsule broken or is there some secret trick I need to know to get it to work?
    Ellen H.

Check the Ethernet connection to the AirPort Express. Make sure that the Ethernet connection from the Comcast modem is connected to the WAN port on the back of the AirPort Express. The WAN port is the one with the circle of dots shown over the port.
It sounds like you are connected to the Ethernet LAN port.

  • Yellow flashing light

What does the yellow flashing light on my time capsule mean? I have a new hard drive and want to download from my time capsule. I have an Ethernet cable running directly from my capsule to my laptop but nothing seems to be happening. The screen is prompting  for a backup volume but the option box is blank.

A yellow light means that a Time Capsule isn't "happy" for a number of possible reasons.  AirPort Utility should be able to show the reason, but if you only have one Mac it may be difficult to learn the reason.

  • AX working fine, but with yellow flashing light

    Hello,
I use my AX to stream iTunes. It works great. But it has the annoying yellow flashing light - EVEN THOUGH the airport utility displays the AX as "green" and working just fine. What can I do to stop this?
I have the AX (6.3) participating in a WDS network with WPA2. I have a Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware. Both are on channel 1. I used this guide to set up the router and AX from default settings: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/WDS#AppleAirportExpress. I have followed this guide on a previous occasion with total success. This time - Mr Yellow Flashy.
    Help me please!
    Ste

Do you only use the AX to stream music?
If you do not use it to connect to the internet then the flashing amber light is correct.
The flashing amber indicates that there is no internet connection present on the ethernet port.
You can turn off the indicator totally by changing a setting in the Airport Base Station software on your computer.

  • Problem with the yellow flashing light on AirPort Extreme

I'm trying to use my AirPort Express and have a yellow flashing light. I contacted ISP and we tested the connection by plugging the modem into a PC directly, so there is a working connection. I tried the Airport utility and it identified an error, stating that no connection could be made
I'm not sure where to go with this, my understanding is that the AirPort Express should have no trouble communicating with modems, so it can't be an issue of hardware.
    Any suggestions very welcome!

Whenever you change whatever device is connected to your modem, be sure to power down the modem first.
It will refuse to communicate with anything else, unless you do.

  • 2nd gen green-yellow flashing lights with content on iPod

so I looked up the definition of the alternating green-yellow flashing lights and it apparently means that there's no content on the iPod.
But when connected to Mac iTunes it shows that there actually is content on it. Hmmm. I can even play that content *from* the iPod through iTunes interface and hear it through the powerbook speakers.
I ran the iPod reset utility, reset the firmware in iTunes and reloaded the podcasts. Still the same thing.
Seems to sync fine. Don't know what's going on with this.

Make sure the mode switch is set to "play-in-order" and NOT "shuffle".
Flashing green-yellow means there's no PLAYABLE content on the shuffle.

  • My power mac G5 won't boot up but has red flashing light and intense fan noise.

I Have a Power Mac G5 that flashes a red light that I've never seen before. There is nothing on the monitor and the fan noise is incredible.
HAs anyone ever had this problem?

    Hi Michael,
It's normal for the fans to go full speed if the OS won't load to handle them.
Where is this red light, on the logic board, or front panel?
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • Yellow Flashing Light - AppleTVs that won't boot

Strictly that should be amber I guess
Well, I've finally dismantled my 40GB AppleTv that died last year.
It basically won't boot - no startup Apple logo on screen, and constant flashing amber LED.
    Amber blinking indicates "Starting Up":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24576
So clearly it's failing to start up for some reason as it never exits this phase.
There is no response to remote, no white flash of LED in response to remote.
Consequently, unable to use Menu and down arrow (6 sec) to reboot to diagnostics menu.
I have always suspected a logic board failure or some other catastrophic failure, as there have been posts suggesting hard drive failure or loose drive connections give a flashing '?', as well as this suggesting possible failure to boot from the drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24604?viewlocale=en_US
I guess there could be any number of faults preventing it starting, from dodgy power supply to logic board, intrinsic logic board failure, CPU failure etc etc, but having had a failed logic board in a 2006 white iMac and a 2007 Mac Mini that would be my top bet!
Anyhow I remembered I had an old 60GB portable USB drive, which fortunately had an enclosure with screws!
Removed the AppleTVs 40GB 2.5" PATA drive, hooked it up to the USB PATA enclosure, plugged it in and nearly fell off my chair when a message flashed up saying 'A USB device is drawing too much current so the hub will be deactivated".
Thought bingo, the drive must be faulty.
Using the PATA from the portable drive I verified this USB port still worked, thankfully it did.
Tried again with the AppleTV drive in the enclosure, and for some reason this time it worked and I could access it. Reinstalled into AppleTV just in case it had been kicked into life, but no go.
The AppleTv has a small CR2032 battery which I removed after unplugging, left it for a few mins, and replaced with a new one, restarted but no joy.
It will not start with a flashing ? if I disconnect the drive, nor will it start with a flashing ? with a different (effectively) unformatted PATA drive.
Unplugged the wireless card in case that was faulty, no joy.
The small fan is spinning so that hasn't failed.
So, I must conclude that it's not the hard drive at all, and most likely logic board, CPU or GPU. Could also be power supply to logic board not giving enough juice to startup properly, or some other component but not something simple to repair.
Am disinclined to open another AppleTV at this stage to swap components about to try to narrow it down, but when another unit fails, I may just try that, keeping this one for spares - at least I know I have a spare working 40GB PATA drive.

I'm having a similar problem. The other night, while i had the powerbook plugged in, it suddenly switched over to battery. I didn't really think too much of it and put it sleep. Well, it drained almost completely while sleeping and when I plugged the power back in, the green light wouldn't come on. Nothing. No booting, nothing.
I'd been in a very dusty environment, so I blew into the power socket. Well, now I get the green light on the power cable, but it's constant, and I can't tell if it's charging or not. I don't think it is, as the battery lights still flash the single LED very quickly.
I've reset the PMU and have been told to go into the open firmware, but I have to be able to boot to do that -- and obviously I can't do that.
I'm in Baghdad and can't just drop by an Apple store, so if anyone has any ideas, I'd be really, really grateful.

  • Desktop won't start and has no blue lights

My pavilion elite desktop has had a high pitch noise since I bought it. I read that the video card could cause that so I got a new video card but it made the same sound. I tracked the sound down to the psu. I returned the video card and got a new psu. The noise is got but the machine doesn't boot up now. All fans come on but no front panel lights no keyboard lights no monitor output. Tried putting the old psu back in. The noise was back but still no boot. I tried removing each piece of hardware till all I had was memory and hd left and still no lights. I swapped memory locations, sata cables, tried the card reader trick. Nothing seems to work. Could a blown led for the front panel cause it to not boot? That's the only connector I have left since I need it to power on.<br><br>Thanks for any ideas.

  • IPod Touch Gen4 has yellow semicircle on left center of screen

    Hi all,
I have had a well-functioning iPod Touch Gen 4 running for several years now.  Today, all of a sudden, a somewhat dull yellow semicircle has appeared on my screen all the way on the left side, somewhat in the center (when holding it vertically).  The machine still continues to function properly, but this yellow semicircle is disconcerting to say the least.
Has anyone experienced this, and if so, is there a remedy?  I'm sure that my iPod Touch is no longer under warranty, so exchaning it is not an option.
I have a attached a picture of the issue below.  When I took screen capture, the problem was not reflected in the picture (hence, not a S/W issue), so I had another iPhone take a picture of the screen problem, and that is what is displayed below.
    Thanks in advance.

Appears to be a problem with the LCD screen, To confirm:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • My Apple TV has flashing light during update

The Apple TV was working fine until I started the lastest update. It now has a flashing light on the front, and displays a blank screen on the TV. It will not Airplay either. I have not diconnectedd it, and have checked all the cables, that are connected and they are fine. Hpow can I get my Apple TV working again?

We just had this happen today, and we were able to fix it using the restart instructions:
Restarting your Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) with an aluminum Apple Remote
Press and hold Menu and Down (buttons 3 and 4 below) on your aluminum Apple Remote for six seconds and then release when you see the LED light on the Apple TV flash rapidly.
    Hope this helps!!

Leave it plugged in for a while.
The LED can be Green, Green/Yellow which the book calls Amber, or Red.
