Start up issues and open firm ware.

Ok, so heres the deal. I have a Gigabit G4 with dual 500 processors. I had a bad motherboard and replaced it. But getting the machine up and running again has proven challenging.
Here are the problems I am having.
1. The power button on the front stays on all the time, whether the computer is running or not. It will go off if I unplug it, and it does not appear to function as the power button any more. The only way to power on is to plug in the machine.
2. At start up, there is about a 3 second tone that sounds before the usual mac chime. This tone is only heard once per start up but at every start up. According to Apple and their 'beep' chart that means bad ram. I have checked the ram with another machine and all is good. Also once booted the system profiler can read all the ram just fine and it passes third party ram tests.
3. After the classic Mac chime I go straight to Open Firmware. Every time. I have pressed the PMU. I have reset the nvram in open firmware, I have zapped the pram. And still I start in Open Firmware every time.
Help please, this is driving me insane. I want my reliable Mac back.
As for an OS on the machine, it currently has a triple boot of Mac OS X Server 10.1, OS X Server 10.4, and Mac OS X 10.4 client.

Start Up issues and RSD

I've been having fun with my new toy, and as a new user of Mac I have generally been impressed, but this issue is really bugging me. I bought a reconditioned/refurbished MacBook a fortnight ago, and on the second or third day started having problems with start up and freezing. The display gets to the page with Finder in the top bar, but the mouse freezes and nothing seems to unfreeze it including the forced quit. I end up powering off and on again, and the issue may recur another 5-6 times before becoming stable. I have rung the local AppleStore for technical assistance, which involved using the disk utility, verifying permissions etc. That hasn't worked. If I try and connect to the internet after finally getting logged on, part way through the dial up procedure the laptop freezes and again the forced quit doesn't work. I also have an issue that when clicking on a link within Safari eg the User tips library on this site I experience RSD and have to go through the whole rigmarole again of getting the laptop up and running and connected to the internet. i do not have the option of wireless, broadband etc - only dial up. thanks for any insights.

I have had some other issues with disk errors which the repairers determined to be software induced, and charged me accordingly to fix - I find it a little difficult to accept that a product which I had had less than three weeks, and to which I hadn't added/deleted any applications etc could suddenly have a software problem and wouldn't be covered under the warranty. The repairer did not address the RSD/startup/sleep problem, stating that it wasn't there and that the software issue should have resolved it. It did the same thing at the front reception, so they kept my little book and replaced the logic board. in the week that I have had it back I haven't had any startup issues and only 3 RSD - generally whilst connected to the internet (dial up). I think I can consider the problem resolved!

Macbook Pro 10.6.8 -Minor start up issues and graphical problems.

Hey guys, I have a Macbook Pro 10.6.8. I have had this computer since Christmas 2010 and I am pretty sure it was made in mid 2010. In the time I have been using it, it has run smoothely and worked very well overall. However, in the past few months I have noticed a few odd things when starting up the computer.
These things include:
- My current desktop image is sometimes replaced with the one I had before.
- Sometimes the white loading screen with the apple logo will show for around 5-10 minutes before the computer fully starts up
And within the past week, I have seen a few other odd occurances:
- The graphics seem to lag at times, like when I'm typing, after I hit the keys it takes a bit more than an instant (like normally) for the letters to appear.
- A few days ago, in Safari, I got a colored pinwheel that just wouldn't go away. It also seemed like it was affecting the whole system, because when I tried to force quit, it took about 2 or 3 minutes for the menu to come up after I right clicked the Safari icon.
- Some programs taking a few seconds longer than normal to start and respond.
And just last night, this happened:
- I shut the computer and tried getting back on an hour later. When I opened it back up, there was an unresponsive black screen and the sleep light stayed lit instead of blinking.
I am becoming increasingly worried something is seriously wrong with my machine and I appreciate any help you can provide.

Do you have all the updates installed? If so, I think you may need to do some maintenance on your Mac. Some caches to clean, some permissions to repair, etc... You can either use Onyx (here, just make sure to download the right version, not the Lion one: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx) when your session is running, but it takes some getting used to.
Alternately, you can install a small utility called AppleJack (here: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15667/applejack), but it has to be run in Single User mode, by holding the Command and S keys down on startup. After that, you just type "applejack AUTO restart" (without the quotes, and that's a caps-on AUTO), then hit Enter, and let AppleJack do its job. Will take some time for your Mac to boot after that, but you should find a more usable machine in the end.

Starting weblogic issue: cannot find file .war

When trying to start the server under my domain, I get a strack trace error in the console that states the system cannot find the project's war file. How can I resolve this issue?

Look in the "config.xml" file in the domain configuration. In that file will be a reference to the application you've deployed, including the filesystem path to the deployment unit (war file). If that file doesn't exist, then that explains the error. That should give you a clue to why it doesn't exist.

Sorry about the "CAPS", old eyes & tired brain, + in hunt & peck typing method I forget to cap at start of new sentence.....I don't have camera capability at this time. I re-read my discription of the screen and it is worded very accurately, as I close my eye's and imagine the words I see this weird screen as described. When this first occured I tried booting from cd (holding c key down) 5+ minutes and nothing (x5). I pulled the battery a week ago to clear cache, also disconnected power sup. from mother board, hoping for a magical self healing effect from complete discharge of residual currents in board or cache. I'm going to try bring life back to it today. and try the Imac boot commands just for fun (?). I may have lacked the patience needed when doing CUDA, programmers resets, so I will approach with a more zen like mind set this time. When I start the computer and open a microsoft office application, a window appears that says identity and messages being adjourned. It lasts for several minutes, there is no way to stop it and all other functuions are blocked. can anybody help?

This sounds like an issue with Microsoft Office specifically. As such, you'll probably get faster and/or better answers by asking on the Office for Mac forums.

Launching applications and opening documents

Generally there are two ways to start an application and open a document:
1)double click on the application, us the menu to open the document.
2)double click on a document, application starts, application loads document.
In writing a program, how do I do #2. Specifically how does the application determine what document to open? Is it passed in argc or by an event callback?
Can it only happen using Cocoa and carbon, or can it be done through a command line utility/standard tool?

It sounds like what you want is create a small Cocoa application that includes the code I posted above and register it as owning the suffix of the dataset. Let's call the application Opener and the suffix .datz.
When someone double-clicks on a .datz file the Opener application will be invoked and you will get the filepath to the invoking file in the supplied filename. That would give you the path and the opportunity (if you want to get fancy) to ask the user for where to save the data or do any other GUI stuff you want to do. You could also set-up Opener so that when someone opens if by double-clicking the application it asks them to navigate to the dataset they want to open. These things are actually pretty easy to do - check out NSSavePanel and NSOpenPanel - because the Cocoa classes give you a lot of rich GUI all pre-rolled. Then your application could invoke the Unix application from the command line supplying the source path (escaped for Unix) and the even the save destination path if you want to get fancy.
The application can then Quit itself - possibly after displaying feedback from the Unix app if there is any. Unfortunately while I know this is possible and there are a bunch of Unix commands wrapped in GUI interfaces for OS X - this isn't my strong suit. I know it can be as simple as:

But it also gets more complicated quickly if you want to do more. Then you need something like NSTask I can't help you the you may need to appeal here for someone with CLI invocation experience.

This is actually quite do-able. You're diving into the Cocoa GUI a little headfirst because your app is essentially all GUI so there may be some head scratching but its well within the realm of possibility.

Try restarting Firefox, the one time page(s) after starting a new release should disappear. Actually this last time with 8.0 they did not come up for me.
If that doesn't work then bring up '''about:config''' and place the url of the page into the filter. Right-click on anything that comes up and use "Reset".

Issue regarding open word file and read only mode using c# & MS-word interop

i am programmatically open a word file for search and highlight keyword. my routine is working fine. the problem is when i am opening the file programmatically then a dialog come and ask me to open file in read only mode. the dialog look like below one
actually i do not want to open the file in read only mode because people can open and like to change and save. so guide me what i can do to not to open the file in read only mode.

I know it's a very old issue and I reached to this page looking for a solution. Finally, I have found a fix to this problem.
The problem is that we create an instance of Word and do not close it correctly. This makes program believe that the file is already open and hence you're getting the respective message of file being locked by you.
Set the visibility of your application to true and then when you close it both file and instance should close and you will not get the problem again.

Mac Pro 6,1 STILL having issues with Open CL (4K scaling and SpeedGrade direct link grades)

I've seen the staff responses to the issues of the new Mac Pro GPU saying that 10.9.4 fixes everything. For me, it has fixed my export issues, so I'm glad. I'm no longer getting lines and artifacts on my renders.
That's great.
However, I'm still having several issues, and they seem to be linked to Adobe and Open CL.

Issue #1
Like most of you probably, I'm doing 1080p exports of most things I'm working on. The first project shows a 1080p timeline with a mix of 4k, 5k, and 720p footage. Because zooming in so much on a 720p file in a 4k timeline looks so crappy, I'm doing 1080p timelines and scaling everything to the size it needs to be. I started in a 4k timeline then switched to 1080p because the 720p footage looked so terrible. However, in the 4k timeline, I didn't have any of the issues I'm showing in this first part of the video.
When I switched to the 1080p timeline, I discovered a weird quirk: When I resize the 4k (or 5k) footage to the size it needs to be (which varies based on the frame I want), it goes back to the 100% view when I'm scrubbing through it. When I pause, the size of the video goes back to the way I set it. I show this in the video. Then I show what was my working solution for the time being: "scale to frame size", which brings all the videos to the size of the sequence frame size and works fine. Later, I turn off OpenCL in premiere and when I scrub through the video, it doesn't zoom back in or only stay at the size I set when stopped. For some reason all of these issues only happen at 50% scale or smaller. It doesn't happen at, say, 60%.
I've tested this with raw R3D files and other 4K (or 5K) clips (even clips exported from After Effects) and the same thing happens. It doesn't seem to happen with 2.5k footage or 1080p footage.
Issue #2
This is the second project you'll see in the video.
After grading in speedgrade (through direct link) I open my project back up in premiere and start playing it back. The video plays back with delays and frame drops. Now normally, this would be expected. But this is 1080p pro res footage, and this is just an effect added, and the yellow bar appears indicating that open CL should be accelerating the playback and it should do so smoothly.
Maybe I was just wrong in assuming that a simple grade from speedgrade would be able to playback smoothly. I turn off the grade, and it plays normally.
But then, when I turn off open cl and leave the grade on, the video plays back without ANY issues.
So to me, it seems I'm still having issues with Open CL and adobe. I've found fixes that make it work temporarily, I don't need that kind of answer. However, I would like this to work. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Something I need to do to get this to work?

What you're seeing is latest version of Premiere (CC 2014, v8.0.0 [169] Build)
Everything here is ProRes 422, running from a Promise Pegasus2 R4 RAID (drives: 4x Seagate Desktop HDD 4 TB SATA 6Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST4000DM000) (that's thunderbolt 2).
I've done everything: I've restarted my computer hundreds of times, I've reset NVRAM and PRAM and done power cycles.
This isn't just some issue that started with 10.9.3 of OSX, the 4k issues happened when I first switched to a 1080p sequence back in February (2014) or so, which means it was an issue even with 10.9.2 and the previous firmware release.
I've reported this issue to adobe.

That crash appears to be casued by the Facebook plug-in.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7 and 10.8), make a new Library in that account, import some shots and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

I've started having problems with downloading and opening PDF files. Any hints?

This started late yesterday and I've been unable to download or open or view any PDF files. I've restarted my computer a few times, made sure Preview was open then when those things didn't work downloaded Adobe PDF reader and that didn't work either. Any other ideas????

Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

Start up issues, perspective.aip, crashing when opening/creating files

I notice sometimes that Illustrator does not finish its start up cycle and will stop at the plugin: perspective.aip. When it does this, I am unable to open/create files because Illustrator will then crash.
I was wondering if there are any known bugs or fixes for this issue. Attached is a screenshot of the last item on start up that I see, perspective.aip, when this crash issue occurs.

.. in which case I could run a cursory check. At the very least I will be able tell whether the file is physically damaged (missing parts of the file), or if it's internally damaged (a bad code in an otherwise good file).

I purchased an iPhone 3 and had photos on it. Started having issues within 30 days and could replace it. Moved photos to back up on iCloud. did not restore new phone from back up how can i save the new photos and retrieve the old ones?

I did not restore my new phone from back up because I did not realize I needed to restore and not just activitate it. How can I save the new photos, apps, and other stuff but retrieve the old photos?

If all you want is your old photos, you could backup your new phone using iTunes, then restore it from your iCloud backup, import the old photos to your computer, then restore it from the backup your made in iTunes returning your newer data to your phone. If you want your old photos on your phone, sync them there from your computer using iTunes. The process would look like this:
Connect your phone to your computer, when it appears in iTunes on the left sidebar right-click on it and select Transfer Purchases; right-click again and select Backup.
Disconnect from your computer and go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings to return it to new
Go through the activation setup, choosing to Restore from iCloud backup. Make sure your phone is plugged into a charger and has access to wi-fi as this can take hours to complete.
When complete, without connecting your phone to your computer, open iTunes and go to Preferences. On the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically"
Now import the old photos to your computer (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083)
When done, open iTunes, right-click on the name of your phone on the left sidebar and select Restore from Backup, choose the backup you made in step 1.
Go to the Photos tab and select the photos you want to sync to your phone and sync.
