Start up issues with 2008 mac pro

Hi Folks.
I'm having an issue when trying to start my Mac Pro dual 2.8,,,,,,,
has been working fine but today no cigar, starts to power up with apple and spinning, then goes dead.

Not sure what you mean by "goes dead." But if it's just a startup issue then you might try this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

Two weird issues with my Mac Pro (locking up and failing to reboot)

I am having two problems with my Mac Pro. The first one is every time I put it to sleep and then wake it up it locks up. This problem came after I installed Leopard (in Tiger sometimes it would take longer to come out of sleep but it always came out). My other problem showed up after I installed Leopard as well, every time I go up to the apple menu and click on restart my computer dose everything normal but when it goes to the “off” state it sits there and reboots over and over and over again. I don’t ever hear the bong or see the grey start screen; I can just hear my CD-ROM drives being accessed (clicking sound I usually hear when I turn the computer on) over and over again. I have run the Apple Hardware Test and it comes back clean, I have also reset the SMC and zapped the PRAM.
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these problems and knew how to fix them.

This is exactly what my Mac Pro did before it died last Friday (9 November 2007).
Apple keeps saying Mac Pro death isn't common, but I've talked to a dozen people whose Pro died just like mine did.
Apple gave me a brand new Pro Sunday, which was nice of them, and I probably was just unlucky with the first one.
Still, it is obvious that Apple is having QC issues lately.
USB video devices will crash a Mac Pro consistently, for example. It's really disappointing because the machine is very nice otherwise.

24" Cinema Display (LED) with 2008 Mac Pro

My 23" Cinema Display monitor is beginning to show signs of aging, having been used with two Mac Pros and a G5. I'd like to upgrade the monitor to a 24" LED Cinema Display, but the 2008 Mac Pro doesn't have the mini-DVI port. Is there any upgrade path here? The new (unavailable) ATI Radeon card?, mini-DVI to DVI adapter (monitor to computer)? I can't believe Apple would leave recent Mac Pro owners with no path to upgrade the monitor (save for the overpriced 30" non-LED monitor).

The nVidia card says it is specifically for the 2009 Mac Pro, while the ATI says it is for the early 2008 or the early 2009. The hard to get ATI appears to be the only card available for the 2008 that has the mini-DVI plug. I'd love to be able to get the less expensive card, but the early 2009 uses different memory than the early 2008.

This report says the Radeon HD 4870 Mini DisplayPort didn't work in the older Mac Pros, but hat may be fixed when 10.5.7 appears.

Clean air issues with a mac pro

have any of you peeps battled with the simple problem of air quality around a mac pro. my machine exhausts so much hot air and fumes (it's always done this, i know there's no technical problem, i'm just super-aware of air quality, do a lot of yoga etc)
any ideas or solutions? at the present i have the tower in a walk-in cupboard but the build-up of heat and fumes in there after a three or four sesh is fantastic. anyone got any tips for safely (and cheaply) treating the air in the cupboard? (is it even recommendable/safe for the mac to breathe it's own air like this?)

Exactly the same thing is going on all around you whenever your house or studio is warmed by the sun (not very often in London...), and the metals in the construction of the building warm up and give off heat. Something would actually have to burn,

But if that happens.. your computer is broken and you have a fire hazard and immediate danger to deal with.
Actually this happened to me once in the studio, when I installed what turned out to be a dodgy RME PCI card in a G5 some years ago. A few minutes after turning the computer on, I smelled a very acrid burning smell which was quite alarming and so I immediately had to hard-shutdown the computer and disconnect it from the power, real fast. As soon as I determined that it was indeed coming from the G5 and not somewhere else, we opened all the windows and left the room for some time, just checking to make sure nothing was on fire.. because the burning smell did at least seem quite toxic. Once that was over, took the card out and indeed it had started to fry, so who knows what kind of chemicals were coming out in the fumes.
But I point that out only to make the reminder that it really just comes down to chemistry and physics.. In that case, yes, there were potentially dangerous fumes because a temperature was reached which caused actual burning to occur - an actual chemical reaction - which produced fumes. However, the warm air that comes out of your computer under normal operation is really just that - warmed up air, the exact same air that is in the room already.. If it were producing fumes of any kind, even in trace amounts, then that would mean that the components responsible for the fumes would actually be chemically reacting and thus would actually be transforming chemically over time with regular use and wouldn't last long.
Or it is marginal evaporation. Some fumes (especially paint solvents) are smellable even at a non toxic low concentration of a few ppb (parts per billion).

My 'old' G4 doesn't smell at all, even with my nose to the motherboard I don't smell anything anymore. My newer machine does, however. It still has to "dry up".

Migration Assistant and permissions issues with new Mac Pro

Hi There,
I've not had any significant issues with Migration Assistant in the past but I can't create a reliable system with my new Mac Pro.
After using Migration Assistant during the initial setup, my user account wasn't even transferred. I tried restarting but in the end, I followed these instructions to reset and run the assitant again: http://stationinthemetro.com/2013/11/10/make-mavericks-re-run-the-setup-assistan t
I've just finished running it for a second time, and while the user account is now on my new system, there are so many permissions issues that the system is unusable (I can't even run Safari). Creative cloud, 1Password, safari, Dropbox are all apps that give me Disk i/o or permissions errors.
If I look in the user folder, many directories within it have a red minus icon. I've tried fixing permissions using Disk Utility but something is not right.
In the past, the new system just boots like the old one but this time round, it asked me to create an account after Migration Assistant had finished - is this normal? I used the same username and password as before but I'm not sure Migration Assistantis working properly.
Does anyone know a full-proof way of fixing and transferring my account without having to spend hours downloading OSX for a full erase and install?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I didn't understand exactly what to put into AppleScript sorry (never used it before) - so I just ran the following from the Terminal:
$ echo $UID
$ sudo chown -R 503 ~
And restarted - everything works now - thanks heaps.
What had happened and is this something I did or did Migration Assistant just get confused?
I have 3 new Mc Pros to setup on Monday so just want to ensure those are hassle free.

Weird gray screen/freeze boot issue with 2008 Macbook Pro

Early 2008 MBP. Gray boot screen with apple logo and spinning gear freezes. Now for the odd part. In the background I can hear iChat log in, and I can see the associated account as available via Bonjour so I know that behidn the scenes, the laptop is indeed logging in and launching the desktop. I also managed to remote in and can see the desktop normally. The screen remains frozen.
I was able to initially get it working by resetting PRAM and NVRAM but that is no longer working either. Also tried an SMC reset.
Can't boot from CD or recovery partition (same result..gray Apple Logo boot screen freeze).
Booting it in target disc mode allows full access to the HD without issue. HD was checked (no issues) as well as permissions the one time I did get a desktop.
Any ideas?

Any suggestions? It appears that the video is not initializing properly. Not sure at this point if it's a hardware failure or not. I tried reinstalling when I managed to get to recovery console, but that doesn't seem to have helped either. That only overlayed the files on the partition though. Perhaps I should just try a complete reformat?

GPU Issue with 2008 MacBook Pro - now what?

About a year ago, my MacBook Pro stopped working reliably after a few months of a flickering screen. I stopped using it, and switched to my iPad and iMac for everything. I'm now looking at things that would require a portable computer, so I got out the MacBook Pro and looked into getting it to work again.
I knew about the GPU issue before, but didn't realize that Apple had extended the repair options (mine would have been covered until May 2012). I'm fairly certain that the GPU is the cause of my problem, as it turns on but stops on the Apple boot screen.
Short of a logic board replacement, is there any solution? Has Apple been known to help anyone out past their repair period? Will baking the board fix the GPU, or is it done for?

Don't pay anyone to do this for you, there is a DIY way that works just as well. What most repairmen do is bake the logic board and melt the gpu back into place. There is a way that does this and all it requires is waiting:
1. Plug in your macbook pro (make sure that its off)
2. Turn on the computer, and hwen it chimes, close the lid and turn it updside down.
3. Wrap the macbook in a heavy quilt.
4. Let the computer sit for about an hour.
5. Take it out of the quilt, unplug it and let it cool for 20 minutes.
6. Turn on the computer.
I can say that this works as I had the same problem, and after this method, the computer is up and running, I'm typin this on it now!

Is 3T drive compatible with 2008 mac pro?

The documentation that came with the system states that up to 4 2T drives can be installed. I don't think anyone was putting out 3T drives for end-use consumers at that time. Can one of the newer, larger 3T drives be used in this system?

Yes, you can, however you have to format them with GUID partition Table or GPT.

Early 2008 Mac Pro boot issue

I'm having what seems to be a hardware issue with my Mac Pro on booting. The MP boots to either a blue screen or a chunked grey screen (http://gallery.me.com/dwphoto#100036/IMG_1401) and hang. So far, I've tried booting from multiple clones (from 10.5-10.6.6) as well as the Snow Leopard install DVD, reinstalling SL, removed all 3rd party cards and usb/firewire externals, zapped the PRAM, repaired permissions, verified disks. It will boot into Safe Mode without problem. If it hangs on normal boot, all the drives are visible and active over a network. I'm pretty stumped.

Help! Problem with my Mac Pro! :(

Im having a strange issue with my Mac Pro it freezes and gets stuck during startup and the OSX never starts, the spining gear gets stuck. First i thought it was the memory so i used the apple hardware test. Then i tryed the hard drive in another computer and it worked. The thing is that is not working in my machine
I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008) computer with 8 gb of Ram and a Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT
KERNEL PANIC sign twice and i couldnt do anything. The message i got is this one.
As far i could understand it has something to do with the NVIDIA driver right?
Does anybody know how to solve this problem since I dont know what to do...

Are you booting from the DVD as follows:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
What happens when you try this? Do you still get the kernel panic? If so, then there is a hardware failure. It could be the video card but it could also be caused by a defective memory module. You might try running the hardware test:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
Some "common" error indicators:
SNS - sensor error
MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
MOT - fan error
If this fails as well, then you will need to take it in for repair.

Why are there so many problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro ???

Hi everybody out there using Mac Pro's early 2008,
I found out there is a lot of problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro.
My early 2008 Mac Pro has been repaired ones under warranty and now it stopped working again ! Also see under: Mac Pro early 2008 no chime and does not start up. Why is this ????
It worked well for about 2 years and then it just fails and i had this failing issue twice already !!! Is this just a BAD Apple product or how do you think I need to approach this. Let’s face it, these machine don’t come cheap and you at least expect them to work without problems for 4-5 years. What is happening here ???

That is probably an indication that you need to find a new graphics card.

The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.

• don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
• can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

2008 mac pro problems with open directory on 10.7.3 server

I am trying to set login policies for network users on a 2008 Mac Pro running 10.7.3 and failing miserably.
Let me start by saying that I am doing this successfully with 6 other laptops and another Mac Pro (2011 version) with absolutley zero issues. However no matter what I do I cannot seem to get this 2008 Mac Pro to work.
The system in question is connected via WiFI (as are some of the other systems). I am using the mac address of the WiFI (as I am on the other systems) and have tried managing this system individually and in a group each of which fail.
Any suggestions or knowledge of an issue with these early systems would be appreciated.

Another observation is that the system I am trying to manage does not appear in the finder under "shared" on any of the other systems on the network.
Also for what it is worth, this system was completely reformatted and the OS reinstalled so I do not think it is an issue with some leftover artifact from an older configuration.

Early 2008 Mac Pro frequently shut downs during start up, Help!

My early 2008 Mac Pro has gradually started having the following problems:
It will often shut down when it goes to sleep.
It has shut down randomly a few times.
And just today it shut down about 5-10 seconds after being turned on. It took about 6 tries before I could get it to turn on.
I have tried all of theusual software remedies (disk utility, different startup drives, resetting the SMC, PRAM, etc.)
I have run apple hardware test on loop for several hours with no errors appearing...
The computer also often loads up to a circle with with a slash through the middle sign, though I am not sure if this is related (it started happening when it switched my system over to a SSD).
I am wondering if this is simply a slowly sying PSU and if replacing it might help? If there any way of monitoring this perhaps? I somehow thought that if it was the PSU then it would simply die completely rather than fade like this...

There are multiple threads and reports of issues with Icy Dock - there is one on Amazon that lines up properly.
The drive sled length of 2009-2012 Mac Pro are longer. Maybe OWC needs to be clearer.
You'e right half-way and maybe some corrupt plist or interferring process you have, or even another hardware item or cable - external - even printer drivers or something that refuses or does not like sleep. Controller card?
All around I'd have to vote for Samsung 830 model. Then Intel 520. Crucial is out with x4 now (Or is it "V"?)
SSD firmware continues to be trouble. Even May-June the SandForce firmware had major issue and reason to hold off any using theirs. Reason to see if yours needed to be updated. Someone last week with m4 found they had old firmware and needed to update it.

I recently bought a 2008 mac pro which came with leopard 10.5. I can't load any new programs because it calls for a password, but it won't accept it. I bought new snow leopard 10.6.3 but I can't load it for the same reason. How can I completely reboot.

Help. I recently bought a 2008 Mac Pro from Mac of all Trades. It came with Leopard 10.5 installed. When I set initially started the computer, I followed the instructions on the screen. I was asked to set up a password which I did. Since I'm very forgetful and not too tech savy, I wrote it down as I typed it in. I first went to install Office Mac 2011 but when it asks for a password, it won't accept the one I set up. I was told that if I bought the new Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and installed it, that it would reset everything. Well, it won't allow me to load it without the password. I am new to Apple - this is my first. I have always been able to "reboot" a computer with discs but I'm not sure how to do this one. Is there a way to do it without the password and reset everything? Could somone please email me

If you don't have original install disks for your Mac, you can order replacements disks directly from Apple at a nominal cost. The original install DVDs are required to reset the password.
If you have no data on your drive that you want to keep, you can boot up from the OSX Snow Leopard disk and install OSX SL.
Insert the Snow Leopard DVD and hold the C key during startup. The Mac should boot from the CD/DVD drive into the installer.
Follow the prompts, erase the disk and install OSX Snow Leopard.

Early 2008 Mac Pro wakes up from sleep with Mavericks.

Ever since I upgraded to OSX Mavericks on Tuesday, my early 2008 Mac Pro keeps waking up from sleep mode every couple hours. It goes back to sleep again on its own though after a minute, so I'm thinking it's some kind of new automated feature that I'm not aware of. With the Mac Pro being fairly loud when it wakes up from sleep mode, it woke me up three times last night! Is there some kind of option in the system preferences that I'm not aware of that can deactivate this new behavior? I usually only shut down my computer once a week, and keep it in sleep mode when I'm not using it most of the time, but I'm going to have to start shutting it down every night now to keep it from waking me up throughout the night...

You may want to disable the Power Nap functionality, if available, in System Preferences -> Energy Saver.
