Start-up issues with slowness, blocked icons and disk 'whirr'

Bought a MB Pro 13" standard model about six weeks ago. This morning, for the first time start-up was incredibly slow, I had the 'beachball' (no clock or data in the top right corner) and I could not select the icons on my Desktop. The Dock appeared after a while but then none of the programmes responded and the clock/battery data etc still did not appear.
It sounded like the hard disc was also trying 'to start' or something with a low whirr.
I´m new to Mac but have searched these forums and used the Disc Utility. The programme mentioned an Invalid Volume count and couldn't be repaired.
Any help or advice regarding what to do next? I'd like to avoid losing all my files, emails from Office '11 for example...

It's also possible that your hard drive is failing. If so, you will need to replace it. If Apple replaces it under warranty, they will keep the old drive.
Try Disk Warrior and see if it fixes your problem. If it does, get an external drive and use Time Machine or Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a backup, so that you won't have to worry about losing data again. All hard drives will eventually fail--that is just a reality. Having your data on 2 or more hard drives greatly decreases the chance of losing everything.

    Hi there.
    Have had infinity installed for about 3 months and have in the last week to 10 days noticed that web pages are loading slowly. I'm using a wired connection on a fast PC with Chrome as standard browser, although I have tested with IE and my wife has tested with Safari and had the same problem.
    If I type in a web address I will get a blank screen with the "Untitled" name on the tab for anything from 5-15 seconds. It seems to be slowest when the browser is first opened and it's looking for my homepage (Google.com) which can take up to 20 seconds to load.
    I am also noticing a degredation in performance with a few HTTPS sites I use, mostly banking (Barclays and Santander) and a corporate email web portal - Microsoft OWA. These time out frequently and require the browser to be re-opened.
    Rebooting the hub and router doesn't seem to make a difference. I have run the diagnostics robot and it found nothing amiss, green across the board. I'm in an RM postcode and nothing on the alerts that affects me that I can see. Linetest is fine also.
    Aside from that, everything seems to be fine. I get very good speedtest results  and downloading and uploading is very quick.
    Any thoughts?

    I tried to search through the community, but with the sheer volume of posts, I didn't find anything that seemed like the same issue.
    My iPad 4 just started having issues with the volume.  On either Bluetooth or the iPad Speaker, anything I'm watching or listening to drops the sound to just barely hearing it and then, about 2 seconds later, it comes back.
    I haven't tried wired ear phones, but I am sure they'll be the same way.
    It's very random, but consistent enough to happen several times per day.

    I have restarted it and also did a Hard Reboot and it didn't help.

    Well there you go, when you advertise it just be sure to say that you can't even see the scratches at half brightness and see how it goes.
    Of course you are saying you want $500 for one with many scratches on the screen, has been dropped, but the scratches aren't visible at half brightness, and has no warranty.     I wouldn't pay more than $300 for a used model with your specs in perfect condition. But yours is far from perfect. I think your high point is $250 which is why I said 50%.

    Having start up issues with Mountain Lion. Gray Screen and nothing happens.

    If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows: 
    Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
    When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
    If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.

    I have a user who when she logs into her workstation and tries to access her outlook folders she is denied access. If she removes and then adds them back they work. Only one other person on our network had this problem which I initially thought was connectivity
    related. I replaced their cat five cable and that seemed to solve their problem. I tried this with this user and it cleared up for about a week but happened again today. Any thoughts or experience with this. Outlook doesnt support archives in a network share
    so I cant turn to them. It uses a login batch script to load mapped drives according to department. This all predates me so I did not build them. However, we've had issues with other legacy systems and programs so it is highly possible that this could be an

    I use Firefox and it is now No. 1 on my choice of browsers. I agree it doesn't like the "for IE only" coded sites but then IE is now a non issue as it is dead in the water! So Safari is now really bloated and getting slower by the version. Firefox is quick, good to look at with numerous skins, and what is more has become the browser of choice for web developers on both platforms because it sticks to the WWC3 code. Camino is just another flavour of Netscape which seems to be a bloat AOL IE wannabee product. Do yourself a favour and download Firefox. Give it a few spins around the block and I'm sure you will agree. As for the sites it declines to accept because of bad code, then I would suggest a strong letter of protest to the webmaster! For too long IE has been flouting the rules and trying to be the only game in town. Take some affirmative action and let the webmasters know there are other browsers available to users.     Sounds like you may have a harddrive issue.  You are probably going to need to get that changed out and then install the OS X again to get it going.

    Have exactly the same problem with my wife's MacBook Air. After restaring in Restore mode and trying to repair the disk (Disk Utility showed errors in the verification), the system tells me to backup as much data as possible (how?), re-format the disk and restore backed-up files. Error comes up when "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required".
    Original restart action was done due to software update requesting it, if I remember correctly, iTunes was updated.
    I don't want to start a painful back-up procedure (although I do regular back-ups): how should I know, where iPhoto stores it's data or where my mails are (yes, still using local mail)? How can I access the data if I can't boot?
    My iMac's disk crashed also a couple of months ago and I'm still recovering. I have four Apple devices, two of them have failed. Can Apple afford such a ratio?

  • Issues with Adobe PSE 12 and Premier Elements 12 plus DiskWarrior 4.4

    Since upgrading to the final version of OS X 10.10 Yoesemite I have issues with Adobe PSE 12 and Premier Elements 12 plus DiskWarrior 4.4. I don't recall their being any issues while I went through the Beta testing process.  The Adobe products (PSE and PE) give me a configuration message "error 16" and it tells me to uninstall and reinstall. I have done this a few times/  It seems to go through the whole install process until the startup where it crashes.  I downloaded PSE 11 and at least it starts up but I haven't used it to do anything.  Also DiskWarrior 4.4 does not load up from the hard drive anymore (error message) and when I boot it up from disk is doesn't give me the option of correcting permission when repairing files and folders.
    At lease all of otheother software including Photoshop Lightroom 5.6 seem to be working.

    Yes, I accessed the "updates" menu from the Help pull-down menu.  I also accessed the updates using the Mac Terminal application with results shown in my original post.  Regardless of whether I used the Help menu or the Mac Terminal app, the AAM tool still responded with:
    Update Failed
       Updates could not be applied
       The error log file may help you in identifying the problem.  The, try updating again.  If the problems persist, contact customer support for further assistance.
      The error log file read as follows:
       Photoshop Camera Raw 8.5
       There was an error installing this update. Please quit and try again later. Error Code: U44M1I210
       Looking at the the output of the Mac Terminal app, it shows:
       ... hdiutil: attach failed - no mountable file systems
       Is this relevant?
    Regarding your follow-up message pointing to:
    Update 12.1 installation errors | Photoshop Elements, Premiere Elements,
    the files referenced in this link are present, are correctly named, and they are in the correct locations, so it would appear that these issues are not related to the ACR 8.5 update problem

    Started having issues with accessing camera raw from bridge. I have CS6 and LR5. Should I attempt to uninstall CS6 and reinstall. I have backup on external hard drive for my photos but will I need to reimport photos after uninstall? Some of the forums are suggesting that my program might be corrupt. Can anyone assist?

  • Having start-up issues with my 1st gen Macbook Pro

    Hi everyone. I just started having start-up issues with my first generation Macbook Pro. It was working fine the other day when I last used it, but today I went to use it and it wont load up to my desktop...? It starts up (grey screen with the little swirly bar under the apple,) then it goes to a blue screen, then my background and dock appear, then (before any of my desktop files even show up,) it goes to a blue screen (that brightens up and then dims a little,) and it just keeps showing this with a little swirly progress symbol (shows when the screen is darker blue, then disappears when the screen is a brighter blue.) I've included a video that I took with my iPhone to show it situation. Any ideas as to what's wrong with it? Thanks in advance!

    Safe Boot by restarting your computer while holding down the "shift" key.  Safe booting disables all nonessential processes, often times allowing you to start up when you would otherwise crash.
    As of OS X 10.5.6 Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache location in the /var/db/dyld directory.  A corrupt cache here can cause the blue screen crash.  Once you restart normally, the cache will be recreated.  This should take care of the issue.

    Use Software Update to update your os to 10.6.8 and anything else that needs to be updated.

    You'll need to reinstall Photoshop CS5 after installing the MacOS 10.10 update -- for some reason the OS updater stomps on some of the Photoshop files.

  • HT4628 Still having issues with Lion os X and wi-fi

    I am still havign issues with Lion os X and wi-fi.   I have 3 domputers in my house including the new macbook pro that has lion os x installed.    The wifi drops out all the time (every 2 minutes).   I have followed all the instructions on how to fix this but I am still having issues.    The other two computers work fine,  one of the is Lion os X that has been updated but I managed to play with the setting and fix this one.   This computer worked fine on Snow leapard and then a soon as I installed Lion the wifi started having issues.
    When will apple make an update that is going to fix this problem.     You want to buy a new computer that works,  I took it into apple and they told me that it is my router,  but I know it is the software as there are 100's of blogs and threads about this exact issue occuring only when their computer was updated to Lion.
    Is there anything else I can do to fix this issue other then un-installing Lion and buying Snow Leapard?

    Does this problem happen with just your airport base station?  Do you have a 3rd party wireless router?  Can you duplicate the problem using any wifi access point?  Did your computer come with 10.7 preinstalled?  Did you purchase the applecare with your computer?
