Start Up Items (Listed on System Profiler)

Hi,
I have two macs. My Mac Mini is running on Tiger and MBP on Leopard. The Mini has 16 "start up items" listed on the systems profiler that I have no item what they do. My MBP only has 4.
How do I identify necessary from unnecessary start up items?
I would like to remove the items I do not need. (Faster start up and possible hacker crap).
Thank you....

This are the listed Start Up Items. Do you see any problemware?

  • USB drives show up on list in System Profiler, but not on desktop

Hi, I have a 2.0 USB hub with 2 external USB drives attached, and sometimes they show up on the desktop, sometimes they don"t. When they don't, I can find them in the System Profiler under USB, and when I click refresh, they still show up in the list but don't show up on the desk top, or in the device utility either. Is there some way to get them to "re-appear" on the desk top? I too only have 1 USB port that will run them, but this doesn't make them show up on the DT. Anyone have an idea of what to do?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, no they don't. If I connect them one at a time, they are fine. Sometimes I can get them to show up, and they stay on the desktop until , for some reason, they disappear and I get a dialog that says this drive was not put away properly . . .. I put the computer to sleep, I unplug the hub, start up the computer, plug in the hub again, but can't find a consistent way to get them to show up!

  • External USB not recognized on my iMac (intel) in Disk Utility, Finder as well as in Terminal diskutil list but is listed in System Profile, which includes the location ID of 0xfa400000 / 5.  Can the location ID be used to restore USB identity ?

My 1TB Seagate external USB not recognized by my iMac (intel) in Disk Utility, nor in Finder as well as in Terminal "diskutil list" but it is listed within the System Profile, which includes the location ID of 0xfa400000 / 5.  Can the location ID be used to restore the identity of my external USB ?

  • L3 Cache disabled, non-functional or not listed in system profiler?

I have a 15" 1 ghz powerbook G4 titanium, and for as long as I can remember, the 1 MB L3 Cache it's supposed to have is not listed in the system profiler. It fails the power-on self test in OS 9, as well as the Apple Hardware test CD. IS there any way of investigating this? The machine seems to run okay, but i'm sure it's hindering the performance of it somehow...

    Hi Les,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
As far as "investigating" goes, you've done all you need to; three separate sources all indicating the same L3 failure is pretty solid evidence.
I'm sure you're correct that it affects performance; unfortunately, cache is soldered onto the logic board, so beyond replacing the logic board, there's nothing you can do. If you've lived with it this long, I'd continue to live with it and put the LB replacement money toward your next machine.

  • CI and QE not listed on System Profiler

Hi All, I just picked up a MBP 15" 2.4Ghz, NVidia 8800M GT 256M ram, Model A1226 late 2007/early 2008. It has a few very small vertical lines down the left side. I took it to the Apple store to check the GPU out and it passed. While looking at posts here and Google, it was suggested to disable Quartz Extreme. So I looked at System Profiler and Core Image and Quartz Extreme are not even listed.
    NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT:
    Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x1
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0407
    Revision ID: 0x00a1
    ROM Revision: 3175
    Displays:
    Color LCD:
    Resolution: 1440 x 900
    Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Built-In: Yes
    Display Connector:
    Status: No Display Connected
Could the previous owner have disabled them? How do I get them back?
    Any help,
    Glynn

Just found my answer...Since ALL Intel cpu's support Quartz Extreme, it is no longer listed on a Snow Leopard Mac. The same is true for Core Image.
    Cheers

  • Why are applications not listed in System Profiler?

    Hi Apple Support Community,
System Profiler -> Software -> Applications displays "No information found." instead of the expected list of 64bit / 32bit applications installed.  What could cause this and how can I get System Profiler to rescan the applications installed?
    Thank you,
    System Version:          Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
    Kernel Version:          Darwin 10.8.0

Discussion thread http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11077939 suggests Applications are not displayed in System Profiler because I purposefully disabled Spotlight for performance reasons and the indexing of external drives.

  • Can't make start up items disappearing

    Hi,
Everytime i start leopard there are two things starting automatically. I can't figure out how to make them not starting:
1 Finder opens some path on idisk, always the same path, though it wasn't there at last shut down
2 Automator want me to create a new project. Since I once opened Automator it comes back at every start up..
There is nothing in my start up items list nor in administrators account that have to do something with these applications.
    Kind regards

Try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.

  • Isight not listed under firewire in system profile

    hello all,
All of a sudden my isight is not listed under firewire in the system profile. I've tried restarting with it plugged in and with it not plugged in. The green light of the camera will come on for a few seconds then shuts off when i do plug it into a firewire port. I have tried both ports on the computer and it is the same thing with each. I use yahoo messenger and no camera is listed there anymore. I also have iglasses installed and it always worked great. I guess I need to know how to get the system to list it again!
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Tim

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Tim
Sorry Tony's good suggestion did not work for you.
    (1) You can try the other checks, including checks for things like bad cables or ports, from How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional. If you can, it will be particularly helpful to try your iSight on another Mac and try another iSight on your Mac.
    (2) Click the highlighted items in System Profiler as follows to check for iSight:
If your iSight is still not recognized in System Profiler, try the suggestions in Apple's What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire device article.
    (3) If you can get your external iSight recognized as a Firewire device in System Profiler but your iSight is still not working, you should next try all relevant suggestions from Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.
Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific". Click here if you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting.
    (4) If you cannot get System Profiler to recognize iSight as a Firewire device after trying all relevant suggestions, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

  • "Memory Overview" not listed in Apple System Profiler

I have a beige G3 minitower running OS 10.2.6 that currently has 192 MB RAM. I am set to get more RAM for this machine, but I noticed that my Apple System Profiler doesn't even have a Memory Overview category showing what RAM is presently in which slot. (I'm used to seeing that in OS 9.2) In other words, I see the software, hardware, network, and production information overviews in the System Profile tab but not the Memory overview. (I get the 192 MB when I choose About This Mac from the Apple menu.) Did Apple discontinue the Memory Overview feature with Jaguar? Or is there some Preference or View I need to set? (The Preferences command is greyed out on the Apple System Profiler menu)It just seems strange to me that I can't get specific info on the currently installed RAM

    Patroklus,
That is what is showing on the right hand side of the page, correct?
What I listed, is what is in the left column of System Profiler, when all of the Disclosure Triangles are clicked, and pointing down.
I then click on Memory, to highlight it, and on the right side of the Profiler,
    my Memory Slots are displayed.

  • In system profiler it says "unable to list firewire devices"

I have been trying to figure out for days why when I hook up my camcorder with a firewire that all that comes up on my screen is the isight camera and not my camcorder. I have tried everything. I finally went into the system profiler and checked my firewire bus and it said it was unable to list firewire devices. My computer is only a few weeks old. Do I need to take it in or is this something I can fix?

Any word on a solution? I also have this problem. My Panasonic DVX100AP works great with my MacBook Pro (10.4) but when I try to use it with the same version of Final Cut Studio (5.1) on my new iMac with Leopard, it's not recognized at all. It wouldn't recognize in iMovie 08 either. I then checked the system profiler and found the "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices." message.
I called AppleCare and they had me try and connect my MBPro via firewire for target disk mode. Sure enough, the MBPro's hard drive mounted fine on my new iMac via firewire. So the firewire port is fine.
The rep suggested that I contact Panasonic as she believes it's an operating system issue and that Panasonic needs to offer some sort of software solution (driver?) to fix this. I've contacted Panasonic and am waiting to hear back from them.
If you have any tips, please let us know.

  • Printer in System Profiler, Not in Printer List?

I ran into an issue after rearranging my office earlier in the week and I was hoping that you guys would be able to help me out.
I disconnected my Canon ip4300 (connected via USB) from my iMac in order to move it and once it was reconnected I could no longer print to it. I initially attempted to connect it to a hub along with my scanner however once it was connected I attempted to print a test page and it kept popping an error saying that the printer was not ready. I thought the issue was with the hub however I experienced the same issue when I tried to attach the printer directly to the iMac.
My next step was to delete the printer and reinstall the driver however everytime I try to add the printer via the setup utility it is not in the list. It is recognized via system profiler but not in the printer list. I also connected it to my MacBook and it worked without any problems.
Any ideas as to what the issue could be? Thanks in advance.
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD

    Thanks Paul and Vince -
I am still unable to print even after trying all of your suggestions (with the exception of purchasing the Fixamac product).
I was actually in the process of purchasing the product when I thought I would try my Epson Scanner as well to make sure that it works. Well, when I tried to scan it ended up giving me the same type of error (Scanner shows in System Profiler but when I try to scan it says it is unavailable) as my printer issue. I pulled some of my console logs at it looks like the issues might be related. Here is the log after trying to scan:
    2007-02-25 21:21:23.216 EPSON Scanner Monitor[287] CFLog (21): GetDiskFragment returns -2806 for <IOUSBLib> when trying to load /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBLib.bundle/Co ntents/MacOS/IOUSBLib

Here is the log after trying to setup the printer:

I really have no clue as to what the errors mean but I found it odd. Any ideas as to what the issue could be? I am about ready to pull my last few hairs out!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The hard drive is not formatted, and it must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in order to install OS X.
Close the OS X installer, and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility. Then, format your hard drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and install OS X
