Start up kernal panic???

I have my MDD G4 set to start up before I get up so I'm ready to start working. This morning I came into my office and the monitor was gray with a white square, about 1x1 inches, in the middle. Inside the white square was a blue representation of the earth. Is this a kernal panic? I tried restarting and came back with the same white square.
I restarted using my cloned external HD and repaired permissions on my internal startup drive. One permission was repaired, sorry can't remember the exact name, and it started with library/.... . Restarted using my internal HD and everything now operates normally.
Can one bad permission really cause this or is there possibly going on I should be worried about?
Thanks,
Doug

Dougles, that doesn't sound like a kernel panic.

  • Computer froze, won't start-up, kernal panic...

    Hey all,
I have a MBP that froze on me in the middle of transferring my iTunes library to my 80GB iPod, and ripping a cd to my iTunes, at the same time. I did a force quit, went to restart, as I have always done, and it wouldn't get past the grey apple and spinning progress wheel.
I got out my install disks, booted from disk 1, and ran my Disk Utility, according to the directions in the forum entries I read. When I try to verify the HD, it starts, then notes an 'Invalid HFS+ Volume Header' stops the verification, and starts to repair the disk. At the end, it says it fixed the 'Volume Header' and when I recheck the verification, it comes up fine.
However, my personal subcatetory HD is "greyed out", and does not have any information as to 'Owner Priveledge', 'Total number of files', 'Disk Capacity', 'Available Disk Space' etc. Basically, it knows I have a hard drive, but won't mount my personal information. It allows me to run 'Repair' and says it has repaired the disk, as it does with the main HD listed.
I cannot click the verify or repair permissions buttons, as they are greyed out for both main HD and subcategory/personal HD.
I have attempted to boot in Safe Mode, with no luck. I have tried to boot a Tech Tools disc, to no luck. I have tried to run an 'Archive and Install' but it will not give me an HD to put the install on, as if there is no HD in my laptop.
The S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified", and the hardware/hard drive tests all said everything was fine.
I also tried the "root# fsck -fy" but it will not give me the promt line to enter any commands. It stops after the "Darwin" and panic text, and all I can do is restart, which does nothing.
I have Disk Warrior on the way, but is there anything else I can try in the mean time?
If I get a bootable external, could I have any hope of salvaging my 40 GB's of music and photos off my frozen drive?
    Thanks in advance!
    MBP 1.83 GHz/80GB   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well, apparently all it took was the magic of DW, and I'm back in business. I still need to do a full backup, from a yet purchased external HD, but at least all of my files appear to be there still, without corruption, which is great.
Anyone want to suggest a bootable external HD, around 500GB, that hasn't given them any issues with their MBP and some simple weekly backing up?
    Thanks.

  • New MBP: Kernal Panic on 2nd start-up

No third-party apps have been installed on this thing yet. Opened it up, went through registration process, software update and the subsequent restart. closed the machine after browsing the web for 5 min. This morning, instead of waking up, I get the start-up tone followed by black screen. After a force shutdown/restart, it freezes. On the next attempt to restart, it starts up but gives the message below. Is this a sign of a dud machine or should I not be worried? Any advice on preventing future occurances of this?

You've been advised to erase the drive and reinstall OS X to see if that fixes the problem. Until you do that there's really no point examining other alternatives.
If an Erase and Install doesn't resolve the problem then take the computer in for repair.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • Several Issues including kernal panics, can't reinstall OS X, icons gone

I've read what seems like a hundred threads on this forum the last 3 days with regard to similar issues to mine but not finding any help that seems to work with my situation, I'm posting this all in a new thread and welcome any suggestions/feedback.
I'm not new to Mac, but it's been quite a few years since I had one and as such many things have changed. Overall, I've been very happy with my Week 43 MacBook Pro. Everything was running like a top - until just after Christmas.
Then, my Adobe Illustrator program began "unexpectedly quitting." At first, there was no other problems with any other programs. Then, about 5 days ago, it started happening with ALL programs. And usually within just seconds of the program starting.
I've tried deleting the preferences files, .plist files, and other such recommended steps all to no avail.
Next, about 3 days ago, I started getting kernal panics, randomly. So far, there's probably been about 40 altogether.
I have also tried reinstalling OS X but it tells me there's an error and can't complete. I've run Disk Utility from the OS install disc and it repairs preferences but when I try to repair disk, it says it there are errors on the disk and quits.
I did try starting in Safe Mode, but the computer will not even start up. It quits immediately after the apple and the spinning gear start. I can start up regularly, though.
Another issue I am now having which just started yesterday, is that folder icons are all missing. The words show up and program icons, machd icon and a few others are there, but no folder icons.
I have had this a little over a month and no issues until right about the 30 day mark (I purchased it Thanksgiving weekend).
I have an appointment later today at the Genius bar but would like any suggestions you all might have in the meantime.
    Thanks!
    Annie

From your description you're simply having disk errors. At this point I would try DiskWarrior 4 to repair your drive and go from there. You have a couple of options here…
    1) Go out and buy DW 4 and try it yourself. It's a good purchase anyway.
    2) Wait for your appointment with the Genius and most likely he'll use DW 4.
Either way I would suggest you don't use your MBP in the meantime. Often with disk errors your problems get worse the longer you keep it in operation. While it might not be the case for you there's no reason to be increasing your risk of data loss.

  • Kernal panics

so my macbook started having kernal panics last week which eventually crashed my hard drive. i had my local apple store replace the hard drive and went back to my original apple ram, thinking my 3rd party ram was the problem. the computer was good for a few days but now i'm having the panics again. i've begun to notice that they occur more often when i'm charging the battery. they seem to occur less (or not at all, i've kind of just realized this and can't remembering one happening when not plugged in.. will update thread later on this).
here are the logs from the kernal panics i've had so far. any help would be great, thanks.

ok, so here's a brief update. after realizing i was only having the kernel panics when my computer was being charged, i did an smu reset and all was well for quite some time. i ran a bunch of apps, which usually causes a panic, and all was well. then just a few moments ago when i thought i was in the clear my computer simply turned off and restarted with no notice. it did not have a panic and did not give the usual "mac os x" quit unexpectedly when it relaunched, but this is till troubling. this was not a problem i was having, but i figure it's somehow related. i have an appointment with the apple store for thursday night. i suppose they can take a look at it. i'm hoping it's a battery issue or something and not the logic board, but any ideas? anything else i can do to try to rectify this situation?

  • Macbook pro has had many kernal panics now won't even start

I've read the phrases kernal panic and failing gpu. I stating getting these a few months back. They have been happening in clusters. Now after closing the book it won't start at all and it feels hot. Its gotten hop in the past when apparently it kept going after I closed it but this is the first time it won't start up again for about a half hour now after I opened it up.
This has a solid state drive so its not a disk problem.

That does not mean it can't be a SSD issue.
Look at this comprehensive troubleshooting article:

  • Leopard and kernal panic after starting up external hard drive

    Hi,
After upgrading to Leopard, everytime I turn on my external hard drive after my Powerbook G4 starts up, I get a kernal panic and it says that I need to shutdown. So I do and when it restarts the disk is mounted fine with no problems. Why would it have a kernal panic? I don't need to access the external all the time so I don't need to have it on. What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Mary

    Hi,
The drive is connected via firewire through the back of my Apple Cinema Display firewire hub. Out of curiosity, when I disconnect the drive from the ACD hub and connect it directly to my Powerbook Firewire connection, I found that I did not get a kernel panic when I turn on the drive. It mounts without a problem. It may be the ACD firewire connection.
This is the panic log that I get.

  • New Macbook Pro Retina continually re-starting when lid is closed - Kernal Panic included

    Hello,
I called 800-MYAPPLE for tech support but they were not able to help me at all, hoping someone here can help.  My new MacBook Pro Retina has been continually re-starting when the lid is closed.  It does not happen every time, may 20% of the time.  I am running Windows 8 on Boot Camp if that piece of information is important.  Here is the latest kernal panic from the log:

I have tried starting in safe mode and it just keeps the little grey spinning wheel on the white screen for ages. I have manually restarted it and turntable it off at the mains and left it for a while but nothing has helped.
I have a 27" iMac Intel 2009 (I think), it was part of the faulty batch that were recalled to have the hard drive replaced. Apple did replace the hard drive but after a while the odd kernal panic started to happen and now it won't even start up.
Am I missing a trick here? I feel like I have gone through the correct process of dealing with a kernal panic. Is there another way of dealing with this issue with out dragging it down to my local apple store?
    Many thanks,
    Max

Can you boot from your backup? (You have one, right?) Can you boot into the recovery partition? Can you boot from the original install disk? Do you have any utilities like Disk Warrior that come on a bootable CD?
In short, do you have anything other than the internal drive to boot from?

  • Another G5 kernal panic on start-up post - but this one is different!

    Hello all,
So, I purchased my g5 used, but I've had it for about three years now with no problems. Within the last few months, however, my G5 kernal panics on start-up about 25% of the time. Also, it has been freezing on wake-from-sleep, at one point about 75% of the time, but now the wake-from-sleep issue is at about 15%.
In May or so I installed some new Crucial memory.
In October I replaced the start-up drive from what I assume is the OEM Maxtar with a Seagate 250gb 7200.10. I removed a media HD from the 2nd HD slot and copied (using Disk Utlility) the OEM Maxtar drive to the new Seagate drive. At some point, I had copied the system folders to my media HD for back-up. When I installed the new Seagate, the computer would often boot to the media HD, even after selecting the Seagate as my start-up drive. However, despite being confused on several occasions, it always started up and never had a kernal panic - also, I didn't reset the PRAM and SMU until recently, so that might have solved that problem.
Until I installed Leopard. After installing 10.5 when it debuted, I started having frequent kernal panics on start-up and these wake-from-sleep problems. Both were more frequent then they are now, and sometimes I can go a week without either of these problems occuring.
The kernel panic that I get on start-up reads something to the effect of "Cannot find driver for this unit (Powermac 7,3)." When it KPs on wake, it points to the "ATA driver."
I have reset the SMU, but I have not tried reseating the RAM. I have run the RAM diagnostic . . . although I have only had the patience to get through one iteration.
I have repaired permissions and verified the disk from the Leopard install DVD.
Any ideas? Is it the HD? I get the feeling that the HD is not powering up when it needs to to provide the computer with the OS on power-up and wake. Perhaps Tiger was able to deal with this and with for it to get going, or the move to Leopard happened so close to the wiping of the OS from the media HD that I didn't notice it. But the thing that kills me is that it does not happen all the time!
    Thanks!
    CMF

The optical drive? Isn't that odd? It's the OEM Superdrive, as far as I know. Maybe there is a firmware update for it I'm missing? Here's the stats:
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-117D
    Revision: B705
Also, I've included the KP data for the wake-from-sleep KPS:

  • KERNAL PANIC EVERY TIME I START UP

Hello, I have a four month old Mac Pro, that has been not working properly since the day i bought it. Apple suggested I bring the machine into the store, but I am a student and cannot go without my computer for more than 2-3 days...
I purchased the computer in-store, and requested they install the 8800 GT as well as airport in-store. The store actually had 8800 GT cards in stock, and installed it on my Second PCI bay. They also left me the original ATI card, which was in slot 1. When I booted up the machine, it continuously was showing kernal panics, literally every five minutes. I then realized, that only slot 1 is PCI 2.0, and figuring the 8800GT is 2.0, that it would be best to swap the cards positions (ati to slot 2, nvidia to slot 1). This reduced my number of panics, but still, every time I boot the computer up for the first time in the day, the computer panics at startup. I am now wondering if the Nvidia card is the card designed for the previous generation Mac pro (which does not have pci 2.0). I have ran basic and extensive hardware tests that come on the Mac OS install disk, which have done shown nothing to be functioning incorrectly. this is a copy of the log entries regarding the error

    Kernel panics are usually hardware.
Hold down 'd' key and it should boot into Apple Hardware Test, or insert your OEM install DVD to do so.
No, we are mere users and mortals and usually you need to do some troubleshooting by trial and error and testing. Schedule an appointment.

  • Kernal Panics - Started 2 Weeks Ago

Hello, I have had my mac for a couple of months and recently had spilled some lemonade on the trackpad. Sent it into apple and they replaced every part besides my harddrive. Ever since then I have been having Kernal Panics in seemingly random intervals!
I had the Tech Guy at my boarding school take a look at it, he re-installed the OS, and said he fixed it. Obvliously he didn't or I wouldn't be posting.
So I must ask, what is going on? Here is my crash report:

You need to take it back and have them fix this particular issue at no charge.... because it's happening after they did the work on it which I'm sure you paid for and technically speaking you should have gotten back a fully working computer.  Obviously you didn't and should have mentioned it to them 2 weeks ago and not now.  But anyway, take it back, something's not 100% right, regardless of if it's still hardware or software at this point.  If you paid to have the system fixed, then you expect to have a system fixed and returned to you in working order.  Any persistant issues after that repair is done, points back to an issue with an incomplete/improper repair.  That is how you must approach it with them otherwise they'll make you keep paying to fix something that's probably their fault.

  • Mini DVI to DVI monitor Kernal Panic

I have a 20" iMac Intel Core Duo, mini DVI to DVI-D adapter, cable, and Princeton 17" DVI-D monitor. When I hook up the monitor to the iMac I immediately receive a Kernal Panic. If I restart, it also results in a Kernal Panic. It does not matter if the monitor is on or off. No monitor, no Kernal Panic. The monitor does work with a VGA adapter on a mini mac and on a G4 PowerBook. I don't have a mini DVI to VGA adapter for the iMac, so have not tried that yet. But I'd much rather have it work with DVI. Any suggestions?

did you try running a repair disk, to see if it is software related?? you could also try pram reset. (apple-option-p-r at start up, and hold til you get two sets of chimes). you could also unplug power from power supply at back of mac mini and plug it back in after a few minutes. if none of these things worked, i would contact the manufacturer of the monitor.

  • 24" iMac refurb - kernal panic after apple logo

I received a refurbished 24" C2D iMac on Friday and it seemed to be in perfect condition. Everything worked, and all of the updates were applied.
Upon returning to the office on Monday, there was a kernal panic when awakening it. It also consistently panics at the blue screen before "Loading Mac OS X..." and after the gray apple logo screen.
Starting in safe mode works fine. Starting from CD works fine.
I have wiped the drive and reloaded OS X 10.4.7, with no change, and have updated to 10.4.8 and all the latest updates (including airport 2007_002), with no change.
Apple Hardware Test from the install CD shows that everything checks out ok. The hard drive also passed all tests. I have tried each RAM module separately.
The panic.log file indicates that there may be an issue with the video card:
    "invalid frame pointer" and
"Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependecies):
    com.apple.GeForce(4.3.8)@0x2c0e6000"
Is there anything I can to single out the video card? Should I just put it back in the box and return it?

First, I'd check this to see if the firmware is actually updated:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imacefifirmwareupdate11.html
If not, read the read-me information available. It may be that upon restart you didn't hold down the button long enough for the indicator light to start flashing, which is the beginning of the actual installation (separate matter from the download). Remember that AirPort is an application, and preferably should be turned off post-download, pre-installation, for installation to be trouble-free.
