Start up logo and spinning gear resolution changed

Ever since watching a DVD movie with MBP connect to TV the resolution of the Start up Logo and spinning gear are show up larger than they used to be. Showing at the resolution of the TV. This only happens at start up, everything is correct after the start up. help thanks.

If everything else is OK I wouldn't worry too much, but you can try resetting the resolution to the default. It's just looking for the TV.
For a more detailed answer you might try posting this on the Ipod page, unless your profile iswrong as it has you listed as iPod touch, os 4.3.4

  • Gray screen, apple logo and spinning gear hang at start up

after a lengthy round of "bejeweled", i let my imac fall into screen saver mode. when i tried to log back in, i tapped the mouse and the imac flashed as it does when actuated outside a dialogue without clicking the okay button, and immediately returned to screen saver. i then manually shut down and restarted to the gray screen, apple logo and spinning gear hang. i then inserted the leopard install dvd, manually shut down and restarted pressing the option key and selected the install disc. it booted as usual. i selected the language preferred, used the utility drop down menu and selected DU, then selected the hard drive and verify permissions to reveal a pop up "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. Permissions verification complete." i immediately selected repair disc, and breathed a sigh of relief with the notification "appears to be ok". then utilities/start up disc/macintosh hd/restart. still get the hang. i have repeated this process several times, also resetting the PRAM as well to the infinite hang. as a matter of fact, the gear has been spinning the entire time creating this post. needless to say, i am truly at a loss. SOS!!!!!!! Please!!!!! SEND LAWYERS, GUNS AND MONEY!!!!

i have perused some of the threads posted per this topic and decided to attempt an "archive and install." i also have a 620gig acomdata external drive with close to a carbon copy of my internal. a few short minutes into the install, the imac reveals a pop up stating it cannot install some files on the hard drive, contact the software manufacturer or restart and try to install again. the internal drive is a 160gig with only about 60gigs of room, so i tried to archive and install to the acomdata instead as it has 180 gig of free space. i get the exact same dialogue once again. restart and a third attempt only archive and install will not highlight, only first time and/or erase and install. further, start up disc shows only the install disc and network as choices. so i attempt first time install on both drives and get the same pop up message again. DU recognizes both drives although verify/repair permissions does not highlight, but not start up disc.
i'm trying not to become frantic, but my patience is threadbare. i am in desperate need of sound advice as to what i need to do.
    thanks again in advance,

  • MacBook Pro won't boot after trying to install 10.7.3 update. Start up stalls at Apple logo and spinning gear.

MacBook Pro won't boot after trying to install 10.7.3 update. Start up stalls at Apple logo and spinning gear. Computer won't even start in safe mode.

My daughter's MacBook Pro was doing exactly the same thing.  I don't know if it had anything to do with the latest update.  She called me about a week ago saying that her MacBook began running slower by the day .  She then called me Friday and told me that it wouldn't get past the gray screen and the gear just kept on spinning.  I did everything I could over the phone including Safe mode which it wouldn't go into and thought maybe it was the hard drive.  She took it to the Apple store.  Originally, they also thought it was the hard drive.  It ended up being a corrupted operating system (Lion).  Apple genius simply re-installed Lion and she's back up and running.  Good thing she backed up right before it crapped out.  She'll be restoring everything tonight.  Don't know if re-installing Lion will help your situation, but it did the trick for my daughter.

  • My iMac will not boot past the logo and spinning gear

My iMac will not boot past the logo and spinning gear (After a Rogue Amoeba update). I can't access the recovery disk I made on a flash drive. (Am I doing it correctly? - Hold down option while switching on? It just stays on the logo). What (if anything) can I do please?

If you installed Lion onto your machine, it should have created a Recovery HD (hidden from view, but visible in Disk Utility with its Debug menu enabled, under Show all Partitions).
    That article states:
Note: In order to create an external Lion Recovery using the Lion Recovery Assistant, the Mac must have an existing Recovery HD.
Would I see the recovery menu (by holding down option on power up)
    Yes.
if there was no recovery disc connected do you think?
Shouldn't matter, since your int HD is always connected.

  • My macbook is not starting properly, remains white screen as it is with apple logo and spinning gear

my macbook is not starting properly, remains white screen as it is with apple logo and spinning gear

    Hi..
Your profile indicates you are running Lion v10.7 so you need to use Lion Recovery  to repair the startup disk if necessary or reinstall Mac OS X.

  • TS3148 my mackbook air starts up with a  persistent grey screen, apple logo and spinning gear

my mackbook air starts up with a persistent grey screen, apple logo and a spinning gear. It will not show the login window

Press and hold the power button down to force a hardware shutdown (emergency use only!)
Next find the Shift key and hold it and press the power button, the machine will boot into Safe Mode.
Next backup your files to a external drive just in case.
    Emergency backup procedure
Drag and drop copy your users file folders (music, pictures, documents etc) to a regular external powered drive as soon as possible.
Do not use, setup or trust only TimeMachine at this troubled time as it will copy corrupted data and we need just your users files safe just in case. TimeMachine cannot be used with a Windows PC.
Unmount and Disconnect all external drives once the backup process is completed.
    Note:
If you have any over 4GB sized files, those won't copy to a standard formatted FAT32/MSDOS drive from the factory, if you need to save these 4GB+ files use another blank/empty drive and use Disk Utility to format it 1 Partition, Option: GUID,  Format: OS X Extended Journaled (or the standard default one for older Mac's).
Mac's cannot copy to nor format a NTFS  drive. ExFAT format to be used with a Windows machine must be right click formatted by Windows, not OS X (does it wrong) XP macines can install a free exFAT update from Microsoft. Vista-Win 8 can format exFAT.
Formatting a drive will erase all data on it.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Your problem is likely due to a incompatible third part at boot kernel extension file that some program installed into OS X at some time.
If you can recall which programs you installed using your Admin password then that's a good place to start and update or uninstall those programs.
The next solution is a #8 Reinstall Just OS X + Software Update fully,  this will replace OS X with a new copy, fix OS X if it's the cause and kick out ALL third party kext files out of OS X.
You also can manually drag and drop the third party kext files (if you know what they are) out of of the System/Library/Extensions folder and reboot.

  • After Time Machine restore, now apple logo and spinning gear

Ok, so my iMac crashed recently.  I used Time Machine to restore.  I got the "Successful" message, and clicked to reboot.  Upon re-boot, it gets to the grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning gear and it freezes up there.  I've turned off and on numerous times and get nothing different.  I'm frustrated to say the least....
I know I've seen a topic here somewhere similar to this, but can't find it now.  Is there anyone out there that can help me figure this out?  I've done the disc utility and everything checks out fine...
    Thanks in advance

Does it boot into Safe Mode?
If not, does it boot into Recovery System? If so, launch Disk Utility there and repair the HDD.

  • MacBook that will not reboot- stuck on apple logo and spinning gear

Hello I have a MacBook that will not reboot. It gets to the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning gear and that's it. I have tried restarting the PRAM, performing safe boot, and verbose method. What can I do to get my Mac back? please help

Try holding the power button for about 10 seconds and try powering it on again. If all else fails, bring it in for servicing.

  • MacBook starts up without the logo and spinning gears. Just code.

I just recently sent my macbook for a repair and have had it for a little while. When it starts up the screen is white then it goes black instead of going to the apple logo loading screen. It then runs the boot up commands and boots up correctly. I just want to restore the apple logo loading screen because i think it is just cool.

Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release the keys when you hear the second startup chime; doing this clears a setting in the computer's NVRAM which can cause that.

  • Gray screen with Apple logo and spinning gear appears during startup

I followed the steps outlined in order in Apple Support by disconnecting all peripheral devices, performing a safe boot, and resetting the NVRAM / PRAM. Nothing changed - the gray screen still appeared when restarting the computer. Next I tried bringing up the Mac OS X Install disc using Disk Utility. I was able to get into Disk Utility but it would not allow me to click "Repair Disk" for the hard drive. I could only select "Verify Disk". So I did that then and the results in red were as follows:
    -Invalid node structure
-The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaiired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
So this is where I'm at, unsure as exactly how to proceed from here. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Well I tried entering in (after the "umount/dev/") disk0s1, disk0, disk1, disk2 etc. all to no avail. So I'm just recopying below exactly what shows up on screen in the Terminal once I enter "df" so that maybe you can better detect that way what my volume should be. Thanks David!

If the issue persists after you follow the above steps, you may wish to make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, contact AppleCare via phone, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance.

  • Imac G5 won't proceed past Grey Logo and spinning gear

Please don't roll your eyes (I would if I read the topic title as this same post has been made many times). I have already tried most of the suggestions with limited success on here as I will outline below:
    1) Ran disk utility from CD and repaired permissions and verified disk (all now OK)
    2) Run Disk Warrior (all OK)
    3) Run fsck -fy (all OK).
I have some strange problems though. I am able to open the Windows Vista Partition without a problem. However, I am unable to launch the Mac in Safety mode and I am unable to do an archive and re-install using the system disks.
Does anyone have any ideas? I would have thought had it been a hard drive problem, the Vista partition would not have been accessible. I can use this without a problem.
    Thanks in advance!
