Start-up Problem - White Screen Open Firmware

Hi
Just turned my eMAc on and got a new beeping sound, the little light on the front flashed several times and then the screen went completely white with the following message;
Apple PowerMac 6,4 4.8.2f1 BootROM built on 03/11/04 at 09:18:55

Welcome to Open Firmware, the system time and date is: 07:26:35 10/20/2006
To continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return
To shut down, type "shut-down" and press return
ok

I typed in 'mac-boot' and return and everything starts and 'appears' to work as normal.
I have shut down and restarted twice and the same thing happens. I also noticed that the push button switch seems to be sticking.
My question is - Is this a hardware issue (the start button is faulty) or is it a software (firmware, corrupt file)?
Many thanks for help and advice
Mick

It's possible it's a hardware problem, but first I'd suggest you try resetting Open Firmware:
At the 0 > prompt, type:
reset-nvram
and press Return
At the 0 > prompt, type:
set-defaults
and press Return
At the 0 > prompt, type:
reset-all
and press Return.
With luck, that will clear things and you'll be back to booting normally.
Hope this helps.

  • HT201718 IMac is on white screen "Open Firmware" what shall I do now

well I have a genuine Mac Leopard OS X 10.6.7 installation disk and the iMac is stuck in grey screen and says  in panic: We are hanging here.I have been able to get to white scree in Open Firmware but that's about it. Holding the C key down doesn't start the installation disk.

    Is your signature correct?
The A1076 is not able to run 10.6 - that OS is for Intel Macs. That model is a PowerPC G5.
You need the original install disks or a copy of 10.5 to install or fix that hardware.

  • Start up problem, white screen. Can you help?

Hello, this problem starts with a freeze up normally waking from sleep mode. Hard restart get fan noise, start up noise, white/gray screen with/out the apple or wheel and that is as far as it gets. Once in a while (like 2 in 4 days) it will boot completely. I have run disk utility 3 times, with it finding and fixing errors twice and none once. I have reset pram, I have tried booting booting from disc (holding c down while starting up) with no change. I have reset the sm by leaving the thing unplugged over night. I am in a small town with out a apple store and only one service center with a huge backlog! can anyone help? Oh and I have reinstalled osx and restored from timemachine 3 times and this still happens:-(

Thanks, I failed to write down the errors, but i do recall them coming up while checking the catalog hierarchy...not much help I know. Thanks for the system test tip, but fond no problem. would the power supply cause the top of the computer to heat up? I just noticed it seems to be hot. I have put a fan blowing on it, to help for now. Keep in mind that I could have just never noticed this before! Here is my last question, I have always purchased apple care, a search shows nothing registered for this computer. I moved about 6 months ago and have no clue where the box with my apple care would be. I can not find my purchase receipt. I recall the apple store emailing it to me, but alas, I cannot find it. Do they keep records of these things? Thank you again for all of your help!

  • Start up remains white screen

During start-up, only white screen with Apple logo...what's happening??!

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use either of the techniques in Steps 1b and 1c to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 10
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 11
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 12
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Nokia N70 starts with a white Screen.

    Hi all,
My nokia N70 starts with a white Screen and does not go any further. It does not make any sound while starting. When i connect it to the PC it is not detected by the PC while the phone is on showing a white screen. I have tried performing a Hard reset using the *3 and the green key but it is not formatting either. I also tried updating the software but as the PC is not recognising the mobile connection the updater is not working either. I am using the latest PC suite.
    Please help...

Remove the battery for at least 5 minutes and then replace and see if that makes any difference. Also try removing the memory card.
If the above two don't work then try these.Always remember to backup your phone before performing resets as your data may be lost.
    First try these
*#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default
    *#7370# - Reformat your phone
    If still not working
Then try the "3 finger deep reset". With the phone powered off, depress and hold these three keys simultaneously "*" "3" "green phone" and then power on phone using the on/off button whilst keeping the three keys depressed until you hear start-up tone.
This should ONLY be done if the device doesn't power up normally anymore and it wipes everything in the Phone memory that is not part of the ROM.

  • My imac starts with a white screen, then goes black and a small white line just blinks in the top left corner of the screen?

My imac starts with a white screen, then goes to black with a small white line blinking in the top left corner of the screen. Any ideas? Thanks.

Try starting your iMac with the original DVD that came with the machine then launch disk utility to repair your hard drive.

    Hi..
Your profile indicates you are running Lion v10.7 so you need to use Lion Recovery  to repair the startup disk if necessary or reinstall Mac OS X.

You need to take it in for service, it may be a stuck key or component failure.

  • Start-up problems, black screen or open firmware

My iBook G4 1.33GHz Dual USB, with 1 gb RAM memory has been troublesome lately. It's installed with the latest version of OS 10.4.9
When starting up the ibook, it will sometimes only show a black screen after the boot chime. Repeated force restart sometimes makes it boot up the open firmware (white screen).
Then I see the error message:
    "Illegal instructions at: %SRR0:ff85e778 %SRR1:00081000"
When I continue on with "mac-boot", I get the blue screen with a question marked box. So it can't find the startup disk.
This usually only happens when I'm done working for the day and close the lid on my ibook without manually clicking on the sleep mode when I put in in my drawer,. I've seen several times that the screen is still on when I close the lid, so it will continue to burn battery time.
I've managed to get the ibook to boot properly after removing the battery and letting it "cool-down" for 15-20 min. Also, zapping pram, vram sometimes works, but I don't know how much that actually helped. It worked once when I typed in the reset-nvram in the open firmware screen too.
I'd rather not have this happen at all! Any suggestions? Is this the much-talked about RAM memory failure?
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

    HI,
*"I get the blue screen with a question marked box."*
That can mean several things. One, the drive is failing. Two, your iBook can't find a System Folder to boot from. Try booting while holding down the Option key which will prompt the Startup Manager window.
    MemTest
Boot from your install disk and check the hard disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free disk space. Not enough disk space can cause directory corruption.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

  • My macbook 13' (older version) starts only to white screen with apple logo tried to rebooot by pressing shift at the opening but it didn't finish starting before stopping please help anybody please

is anbody there how does this work never done it before my macbook won't start past white screen with apple logo any ideas ?

Are you using a 10.6 Snow Leopard Install DVD? If yes, you can erase and install following these directions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3910
You'll know whether or not it is a hard drive issue when you get to step 8 under "Part One: Erasing the hard drive". If you do not see your hard drive in the list on the left side of the Disk Utility window then you know the Mac isn't seeing it—could be a loose cable, but more likely hard drive failure.
If you can see it on the left, click on it and look at the bottom of the Disk Utility window. If you see something like "S.M.A.R.T status: failing" that is definitely a hard drive issue. Otherwise, you can just follow the directions for an erase and install!
Might be worth fixing depending how much a repair would cost. Genius Bar could at least diagnose it for you and give a repair estimate. I'd look at what a new or refurbished one with your same specs would cost though to see if the price differential is worth it...

  • Start up problem-white Apple screen 'freeze'

Yesterday morning we had a power outage and the Mac went off, of course, but I do have one of those Apple surge protector 2 plug boards.  After the power company fixed it the computer came back on OK, I used it in the normal way, then I shut it down as we were, on that day, having a scheduled and notified power shutdown for pole replacement.
When I went to turn it back on after the shutdown, it will not power up.  I get the white screen with the Apple symbol and the little rotating wheel under it.  Initially it had a progress bar thing underneath but it only got about 10% of the way from left to right then disappeared.
I kmow there is a way to 'safe start' by holding down a key but cannot remember what it is.  Any help or suggestions much appreciated.
I have disconnected all external attachments.

    Hello,
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Will not start - get a white screen and  gray folder with ?

I tried to erase the drive and reinstall snow leopard - which got interupted.
Now when I try to start - I just get a white screen - sometimes with a folder and question mark in the middle of the screen.
I tried rebooting with original OS disc - while holding option key - but it eventually kicks the disc out.
    thanks

There are four general causes of this issue:
    1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
    2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
    3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
    4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from its location.

  • 3gs wont start up/ only white screen.

Whats happened, is I had updated my 3gs from ios 6.0 to 6.0.1without any problems, as i have done many other times.
(upgrading from previous ios's from 3xx upto now etc) anyway about 30mins later i noticed it just turned off while it was still
connected to my cpu. so i started pushing the home button just to turn the screen on but nothing, same thing with the power button
the phone was charged so it wasn't flat..so after another 30 odd minutes of trying to turn it on. i started to do the hard/soft reset.
to put it in dfu mode/restore mode..itunes picked it up, it said your iphone is in recovery mode, and you need to restore iphone before
i can use it....blah blah......so it starts the process of restoring it, it gets to the part where it needs to verify the iphone with apple for restore,
the screen turns on but its just a white screen its white for about 20sec...then it turns yellow.. and now itunes is saying its, waiting for iphone....
and thats it. so i leave it connected for an hour or so, while its saying that it waiting for iphone..still nothing, still saying the same thing.
and this happens every single time... even after today with the release of ios 6.1 it does the same thing...no apple logo,no connect to itunes logo,
nothing just white screen... i no its happen to others all i want to know is can i get it back to normal....ive tried everything, I possiblie can, i need help/advice
anything....hopfully this whole thing makes sence's and there is help out there.....

Have you tried a Safe Boot and then try to empty the Trash? Restart holding down the shift key until you see a grey progress bar. Once booted (hopefully) try emptying the trash and then restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If none of that works try booting with the restore disk that came with the Mac (I assume you are on Snow Leopard as your profile) and running Disk Utility to see if your HD needs some repairs:
Disk in optical drive, restart holding down C, on boot choose your language and at the next screen from the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD and click on repair disk. If any repairs are made click on repair disk again until you get a clean pass then restart from the Apple menu.

  • HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook starting with Blank White Screen--Help??

I've had an HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook for a couple years now. Today I go to start it up (without the power cord plugged in), and a completely white screen appears. I'm thinking, maybe it's still starting up/working some kinks out. Then I hear the Windows 7 twinkling start up sound that usually happens when you get to your log in screen. So it seems the computer itself is working, but there is zero display on the screen. If anyone has any good advice/experience with this/knows how I can fix it or what I should do, PLEASE let me know! Computer problems are so distressing

I had this problem with my father's pavillion.
There was a broken pin in the screen socket on the motherboard so I guess it was always making poor contact until one day this pin must have broken off completely and the screen would only display completely white.
I inserted a fine solid wire (not multi-strand) into the plug at the right point so that it only just stuck out enough to make contact with what was left of the pin in the socket, whilst being fully inserted into the plug.
I then taped the plug/socket together to make sure it didn't loose contact by coming loose.
Seems to have solve the problem in the short term (but the socket should need replacing for a long-term fix).
