Start up problem with macbook pro
i have a problem with my macbook. when i start up the macbook after pressing power button it turns on with apple logo and then convert into a stop sign (like a circle with slash ).it does not proceed further .what should i do ??
The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
Snow Leopard General Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
2. 1GB of memory
3. 5GB of available disk space
4. DVD drive for installation
5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
fees may apply.
6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
Model Identifier 5,1 or later
3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Lion System Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
or Xeon processor
2. 2GB of memory
3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
4. 7GB of available space
5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
This, Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.70, is the current version of Flash. It should work with Snow Leopard or later. -

PROBLEM WITH MACBOOK PRO 2.4 Dual Core and MOTU Ultralite
Hello,
I Recently bought a macbook pro to have for my Live appearance.
I also had a motu Ultralite which worked super well with my Pc and with the macbook the first days
One day i had to play live in a club so i connect my soundcard but the macbook wont recognize it coz i cant see the popup window that i get everytime i connect my motu on it...i rebooted the soundcard then the laptop nothing...i started sweating coz my live performance would start in 20 minutes noting came out of it so i cancelled the gig for the moment and played a Dj set instead.
When i got home i connected the card again and was working perfectly till yesterday..So i thought there was something wrong with the Power in the Venue or something like that.
Yesterday i connected the soundcard and again does the same any other firewire device was working properly.
I searched online and saw there is alot of people having the same issue but no solution.can someone tell WHY sometimes it works and sometimes doesnt??its very stupid to have 2 machines with a cost of 2500 euro almost and they dont work well together
Op system: Leopard 10.5.7
Motu ultralite Mk2 firmware: 1.15
motu ultralite driver 1.4.21
Thank you in advancePopping in to say that I have now a fully functional Ultralite (mk3) under OS X 10.5.8 on my Macbook.
I have found that people who have upgraded the firmware to 1.15 were having problems (according to the MOTU site this upgrade isn't actually meant for the mk3 anyways) with Leopard (maybe Snow Leopard too?) and needed the 1.00 version of the firmware.
Using the drivers supplied on the MOTU CD, the device would not appear when connected to the Macbook. However, removing these from the system prior to downloading the latest MOTU Universal driver from their website seems to have solved it.
Now after installing the universal drivers from the website the device works without any problems (driver 1.4.23 of MOTU Audio Setup). Hope this helps someone -
Problem with Macbook Pro 2,66Ghz and 4GB Kingston memory
Hi all,
I bought 2x 2GB Kingston memory(SODIMM - DDR2 @ 667MHz) in order to upgrade my MBP.
When I install both modules, the MBP won;t boot. I get a blank screen.
If I use 1 Kingston module at a time (1x1GB(original memory module)and 2GB(Kingston)) .It works fine.
Both of the Kinston RAM modules seem to be working fine, when not installed together, but MBP doesn;t start when both are installed at the same time.
Any idea of what the problem could be?
Is related to my MBP or it has to do with the Kingston Modules?
Thanks in advance.D. P. Bailey wrote:
Hi, I'm having the same problem on the 2.4 (early 2008 2.4 GHz macbook pro.) I bought 2x 2gb Crucial RAM and installed correctly, but the machine doesn't start up. So, I tried every conceivable combination, but the new 2gb RAM only works when paired with one of the old 1gb sticks giving me 3 gb total.
The new 2gb sticks BOTH work (when paired with old RAM), just not together. The 2gb RAM they sold me shows its speed as 6400 800mHz -- Could the faster speed be the problem? My system profiler shows the 800mHz RAM as 667mHz when it is installed.
D.P. it looks like you have the same mbp as me. I talked to Apple Support on the phone a couple weeks ago doing my own research and learned (i'm not SUPER tech-savvy) that the laptop is 800mhz but will only accept ram of 667mhz because the computer has to be faster than the memory installed in it. They cannot be the same speeds. Don't know if this would cause the problem you are having, though. -
Problem with Macbook Pro at startup
Hello, I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running OSX Lion 10.7.4 and I have a problem at start up: battery and wifi icon on the status bar take long to appear, even though they are running, and sometimes as they appear the audio freezes, so I have to reboot and hope audio is ok. Yesterday I had to rebook 3 times until everything was allright. I post here my log. I anticipate that yesterday I downloaded Parallels, which the guys from the shop uninstalled months ago, to run the uninstaller. In this way I have deleted all files and also the application preferences as well.

Ok, I've done it, but the situation is still the same, even though the last 3 or 4 times that I have rebooted the audio worked fine, but that could be a casuality.
Disconnect all external hardware (Walcom tablet for instance) and run through this list and stop after #16 and come back to report and/or proceed to #17 and further if it warrants it.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
There is a madness to the order of the steps, it's designed to narrow down your issue from hardware down to something lurking in your user account folder
So far I read the Walcom tablet is causing some issues, however that might not be the primary cause. -
Help! Have a serious problem with macbook pro!, please see description!
so, this must have been about a month ago at the most when it started playing up. basicly, I noticed that A-it has all of a sudden become allot slower than before, B- applications are crashing regularly, this seems to be getting worse and worse, C- i had an incident once or twice where for no reason what so ever the macbook pro simply shut down and restarted for no reason, and with no error message, (though the more recent sudden shut downs give me a message on restart).
I first investigated the problem when I was playing skyrim, using bootcamp of course to run windows, as I do with many games. After owning the game for about two weeks, and it playing fine, it just crashed and bluescreened all of a sudden without warning, and from that moment on i was unable to play the game since every 5 or so mins in it would crash to desktop or just bluescreen. i thought that this was an error with steam or with the game, and so i looked for help on the steam forum. as i was going through various methods to solve the problem, it seemed that the problem was worsening, since the windows partition begun to bluescreen more often for no reason, and then i noticed that the mac os partition was unexpectedly shutting down for no reason more often aswell, and so i have abandoned my attempts to fix what i thought was an error with windows, and i now believe that it is something more serious. im not so sure what i should do in order to solve this, i know my way around a computer, but im not genius at them, and so i have come to the apple forum seeking help!!
here i have attatched info that may help, and by the way, it is 64 bit windows 7 that is installed on the bootcamp partition.
the following message on the bluescreen report makes me think its something to do with the graphics drivers, and so i reinstalled all of the drivers on windows, but this did absolutely nothing unfortunately. 'dxgmms. sys error'UPDATE: after verifying and repairing permisions using disk doctor, things seemed to be on the up, but i think this was just hopefull thinking, since it has now got A LOT worse. i can no longer log in to my mac os partition, as soon as i get to the log in page where i type my password in, after typing it in and pressing enter, it will log in for a few seconds and then before i have a chance to do anything, log me out!! this is very very odd indeed!!!

Graphics problems with macbook pro retina mid 2012
It seems like I've started having graphics issues after installing the latest firmware upgrade. At seemingly random times, I start getting graphics garbage showing on my screen. Here is a screenshot:
I'm also getting some really bad sound quality on facebook notifications. I've been forced to disable them they sound horrible like they are clipping.
Trying to figure out if this is a problem on all Late 2013 15" macbook pros or if mine is defective? This occurs even at around 20-30% volume levels with the Facebook notification sound problems... -
Problems with MacBook pro with no return.
I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" with Retina Display and installed iWork & iLife using the original DISC obtaied for the software. I istalled update 9.1 and 9.3 as suggested by the Apple councilar. I have several documents created with the iWork applications. I get the message "The document-title-cound't be opened". All othe software i installed from third parties work with out problems. It quite disappointing to dela with this problem evenafter two long time conversations with the Apple agents. Moreover, the transfer of files from my old MacBook Pro did not work well as well. I had been forced to erace my hard disk and reinstall the OS 10.8 and the updtes 10.8.1 and 10.8.2. The other problems with the new acBook Pro are the insbility to transfer the data complete fromthe old Mac Book Pro by which I lost all my music, Photo and Video fies. These files were created for the past 10 years and I feel that the purchase of the MacBook Pro was unnecessary burdon and loss of confidence in the Apple system and company.
No repair mechanism is available and they need only the registration of the software etc.
A sad state of affair and may be time that it will start going down following teh "Newton's" low. Everything goes up has to come down!!!!!I'm sorry but we can only go on what you post and given that, I had to ask if you spoke English so I could respond appropriately.
You say you have OSX 10.6.7 but also say you have just bought a new MacBook Retina which indicates that is not correct.
If you used Migration Assistant, your documents, email, settings and most of your software should have transferred OK. The iWork unfortunately is not one of the software that does neatly transfer, which is Apple's fault. Usually it is best to do a completely new reinstall from the installer DVDs, and update, none of which would affect your documents.
If the Migration failed it would be useful for you to explain what exactly you did and what happened. At the moment your post is simply a complaint with no details. No details leaves us completely guessing, and given your post, makes us suspect you did not understand what you were doing.
Not a help after the event, but are you aware of Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper? Both let you archive your previous installations so you can go back to them if there is a problem.

Problems With Macbook Pro HD Change
Hey guys,
I have a late 2010 Macbook Pro Unibody i5 and I have recently tried a fresh install with my snow leopard disc, however when I boot from disc, I just get the grey screen and cant run the installers. From researching the net its alledgedly to do with my hardware being newer then the software on the disc.
My main concern here is that I want to change my HD to an SSD and will obviously need a fresh install. If i change the HD, will I be able to install OSX from this disc or will I need a different software package?
I dont have the original disc's anymore, I have recently moved home from Uni and cant find the box or the discs. I have tried to contact apple to get replacements but Im having no luck!
Any feedback is really appreciated!
Thank you,Star,
Do you have a Time Machine back-up? When I bought my SSD, I started up with a Lion Installer on a USB flash drive, re-inited the SSD, and installed everything from my Time Machine back-up, all with no problems. If you don't have a TM back-up, I suggest getting an inexpensive drive that will be about twice as large as your SSD and backing up. Then I would invest in Lion, downloaded from the App Store and making a USB boot drive. Boot from the USB drive, restore your backup to the new SSD, ad you'll be in business. Depending on the size of your current drive and the SSD, you should be able to get a backup disk fairly cheap and a 8GB USB drive ($8 or under) and get the Lion upgrade for $30. You can then use Lion DiskMaker to create the boot drive.
Hope this helps,

Weird problem with Macbook Pro 15" and Asus PB278 monitor
Hi there
I recently bought a brand new MacBook pro 15" the one with a dedicated nvidia 750 vid card. However I'm facing weird problems while connecting it to a external monitor Asus PB278 (1440p monitor). I use a mini display port to display port cable.
My problem is: Sometimes it works perfectly, but then if I put the laptop to sleep, sometimes it won't recognise the screen at wake up, at first I tried to restart the system, power on and off the monitor, connecting and reconnecting the cable... nothing worked. I even bought a expensier cable thinking it was probably a low quality cable. I found that then only way to fix this is to connect the monitor with a mini display to HDMI cable I have (won't support over 1080p), and then put the mini display to display port cable again... it is freaking bizarre.
This is very frustrating, I live outside the US and while the retailer will honor the guarantee I'm not sure if this is a Software or Hardware problem, It will take them about 3 weeks to replace my system which is unfortunate due to I have plenty of work to do. I don't want to send it on guarantee just to find out hey... display recognition is broken again. My questions are:
Is there a way to know if this is a hardware or software problem?
I've heard Yosemite is having some issues regarding external displays, is this one of those?
Have you found yourself experiencing this problem? Could you fix it?
Sorry if my english is a bit weird, thanks in advance.Hi Gatobolo,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It appears that you've discovered unusual behavior with your MacBook Pro and an external display, where you need to temporarily connect a different display adapter before you can use your Asus PB278 again.
I can offer some additional tips to help resolve or further isolate the issue you're seeing.
First, try the following resets to see if they eliminate the behavior:
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Next, if the issue occurs again, try restarting your Mac into Safe Mode:
Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
Restart your computer.
You can find the steps above in this article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
If your display is recognized in Safe Mode, or after restarting again, the issue may be due to a software conflict.
Another suggestion mentioned in the article above is to try a different type of display adapter, such as a Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter.
If the issue persists, you can also back up your data, erase your hard drive, and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X Yosemite.
OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
If the issue still occurs after a clean install, troubleshooting the hardware may be necessary.

Graphic problems with Macbook Pro Late 2011 13"
I'll try to explain it as clear as possible. This started to happen a couple weeks ago:
My Macbook screen started to being white-blurred, and the image slows down while this happen. At first I thought that was happening randomly, but then -I guess- I realised that it was lid-related; when I open the lid more than 90 degrees the problem started to happen, sometimes it starts to happen even if the lid is in its 'working fine area' though , but after moving the lid up and down several times, it gets 'fixed'... until it happens again. There are times when it doesn't get fixed instantaneously, and it's really driving me crazy.
My first thought was that it might be the flex (not sure if this is the right name of it tough), I mean the cable that goes from the screen to the logic board. If so, or even in another case scenario, I have an Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" where I can use any part, except for the logic board, if needed.
Thanks in advance.Well the Apple logo will always be visible through the screen when there is a fairly bright light behind the screen.
That is totally normal.
As for the freezing and since this is your first Mac computer I would like to make you aware of one thing.
The way Mac OS X operating system works is slightly different then Windows. In Windows when you click the X in the upper right hand corner of the program you are using that program closes freeinig up the memory it was using. In the Apple OS, OS X, when you click the X in the upper left hand corner of the windows you are using all that does is close that active window. It dos not close the program. So if you have started up 2-3-4-5-6 programs to do something in them and then clicked the X all you have done is closed those windows for all those programs. The programs is still running. So you can end up with several programs using memory when they shouldn't be. You have to actually close those program by first using Command+Tab to see what programs are still open then go to the menu bar on the right side where the name of the program is displayed and click on that name and select Quit Program Name. Or once the name of the program is in the menu bar press Command+Q (Quit) to close that program.
Get in the habbit of always using that keyboard shortcut when you are done using a program.
Having multiple program open will cause the system to run slow.
The hard drive Apple is putting the newer Macbook Pros are of the slower type. Running at 5400RPMs as opposed to the faster 7200RPM models. Why I don't know as the faster drives don't cost that much more. Because of this all program run slightly slower. To open, to save files to and when used as a swap disk to expand on the physical memory in the computer. Which in turn will make the system seem sluggish and can casue some freezes.
So make sure you have closed all programs before opening another, and only have at the most 2-3 progams open at the same time. -
Power and battery problems with MacBook Pro intel core duo
Hi there, I've been having this problem for about a week now with my macbook pro where it shuts down a second after it's unplugged, even though the battery is full. I tested the power cord with another that works, and the same thing still happens. I've zapped the p-ram, and reset the MPU where you take out the battery and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and all that. I think it might be the logic board, or something within that? Any suggestions before I send it in to Apple for investigations?
I started having the same problem several days ago. Unplug the magsafe connector, and the MBP powers suddenly powers off, even though the battery shows a full charge on both the menu bar and the battery leds.
I decided to try a new battery after reading a number of posts here about the same problem.
Back to normal with the new battery. So now I'll go back to Apple to get the non-functioning battery replaced under AppleCare. (I wanted a second battery anyways)

Crash Problem with MacBook Pro
I just bought a nice, new MacBook Pro yesterday. I also have an iMac that I have absolutely no problems with, but the MacBook Pro is another story. It has crash problems that rival that of my Windows machines, and they seem rather random.
I used to have the problem when running software update. I was downloading updates through my wireless network, and the system would just get to a certain point in the downloads, and then boom! The screen would get a bit darker, and I'd get a message that said I needed to restart the computer. I did some messing around and then finally did the "Repair File Permissions." Then, I was able to download the updates, but I did so one or two at a time. I also used the "Verify Disk," and found no problems.
It seemed that all was good and well until today. After running a long time with no crashes, I had this problem again while reading some articles on Wikipedia. It just came out of nowhere. I restarted and so far haven't crashed, and I hope I submit this before it goes down again.
Does anyone know what can cause this or what to do about it? Any help will be appreciated.
DavidWell, now it has happened again. Just after I got the post up, I got what must be the Mac OS equivalent of the "Blue Screen of Death." All of this happened while I was using the Internet wirelessly. I also have a Bluetooth mouse on this system, but the system crashed even when I wasn't using it. At least this computer starts up quickly.
