Start up problems after loading Yosemite

Before OS X Yosemite I had no problems. Now when I turn my IMAC on the screen goes white with no response from Keyboard or mouse after the vertical bar fills. I have to shut off the power and try again until it finally completes the start up and I have a screen.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IPhoto 9.6 library permission problems after loading Yosemite

I recently loaded Yosemite 10.10.1 and upgraded iPhoto to version 9.6.  Upon opening iPhoto, I get a message about library needs to be upgraded to work with this version.  I hit ok and then it fails with a message about unable to fix library.  I think my pervious version of iPhoto was probably about 2 years ago.  I do have a time machine back up but when I go to the the Photo/iPhoto.Library I don't get a restore option

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

great Problemes after installing Yosemite (10.10.2 ) with Photoshop CS6....The program crashes --last time 10 times during my work session..wacomtable doesnt work..it is slow...and get error messages about the graphic card....It s a Terror to work with my beloved Photoshop!

The Yosemite upgrade very often damages existing Photoshop installations.  Thank Apple for that.
You need to uninstall and re-install Photoshop, then apply all the Photoshop upgrades from scratch.
But first, give us details about your setup:

Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
A screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,

  • After loading yosemite can't get permissions from any network PC - OK from MACs on network...any advice?

after loading yosemite can't get permissions from any network PC - OK from MACs on network...any advice?

would love to...way over my head so far...upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2 - I have another MAC (motorola chipset...maybe 10.6?) and 3 PCs on the network...the older MAC linked up through the network just fine...
I can see the Yosemite MAC on the PCs...I can open customer file folders (I am a printer) from the shared drive...I can drag files (let's just call them PDFs, they mostly are) to the MAC customer file...but if I try to open them from the PC I get an error message that says permission denied - or may be in use by another user. There are no other users. After I uploaded to Yosemite, I noticed most if not all drives and or folders had permissions changed to either no access or to read only...I've changed as many as I could find...drives, and folders...I can open those same files if I'm on the yosemite mac...Here's the catch, though...I was on a different floor and that PC can open a PDF on the Yosemite...but the RIP that prints our large format prints now won't print those files (whole RIP locks up) unless they are first dragged to the PC desktop...then all is fine. I thought it was MAC upgrade oriented, but I do have a PC that halfway works...I'm really stymied...

  • Loosing internet after loading Yosemite

I keep loosing my internet connection since loading Yosemite.  All other devices work fine in the house so assume it is Yosemite at fault

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    Step 5
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 6
    In the Wi-Fi settings, select
              Advanced... ▹ TCP/IP ▹ Configure IPv6: Link-local
    Click OK and then Apply.
    Step 7
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 8
    Reset the PRAM.
    Step 9
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    Step 10
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Start-up problems after Discwarrior

Having experienced start-up problems on my iBook G4 (late 2004, OSX 10.3.9), specifically the dreaded grey screen and the disappearance of my hard-drive, which neither Apple Hardware Test nor Disk Utility could resolve, I called in outside help (an Apple-certified engineer) who said I needed to run Discwarrior.
Discwarrior ran for 10-12 hours, after which my directory was rebuilt and my hard-drive reappeared. Then I proceeded to perform an "Archive and Install" of OSX, as recommended by the engineer.
However, my iBook still only starts-up as far as the grey screen. I should add that when I start-up from the installation disc, when I select the option to change start-up discs when quitting, my hard-drive isn't listed as one of the options.
basically, my iBook won't start up from the hard-drive. I think. Any suggestions, anyone?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, Nic. Since your drive can't tell you directly when it's failing as newer drives can, you will have to watch for and interpret indirect indicators (like the rapid re-corruption of your HD directory), or else buy diagnostic software (such as TechTool Pro) that can test the drive thoroughly. But since TTP costs as much as a new drive, I'd suggest instead that you simply buy a new drive and (separately) an external FireWire enclosure for it, boot to your Panther installer disc 1, use Disk Utility to format the drive, and install Panther on it. Then boot to the external drive and copy your data from the internal drive onto it. Shut down and swap the two drives: old internal drive into the external enclosure, new drive into the iBook. Boot to the internal drive, connect the old drive, and use Disk Utility from the internal drive to reformat and completely zero the old drive. If DU can't complete that zeroing process successfully, the drive is bad, and you should replace it with another new drive in the external enclosure, on which to keep all your data backed up at frequent intervals.
Chances are that the new problems you've experienced since replacing your HD directory with a new one created by DiskWarrior are due to a progressive failure of the hard drive, leading to increasing corruption of the new directory almost from the moment of its creation.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

    Remove Login Items to test.
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups then select the Login Items tab. Remove all items. Restart your Mac to test.
And remove all items from:  /Library/StartupItems  then restart to test.
Not enough free space on the iMac disk can slow startup time.
Click the Apple  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
If it's not a login/startup items or disk space issue, check the hard disk using Disk Utility.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk and restore OS X.

  • App compatibility problems after installing Yosemite 10.10.3?

I just installed the latest version of Yosemite (10.10.3) on my 27inch iMac (from 2012/13). 16GB RAM, 3 TB drive,NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1024MB.
Since then, I get the spinning beach ball of death and apps just hang (iTunes, Safari) every few minutes and then restart a few seconds later (it happened when Iwas typing this note for example). Feels like app compatibility or permissions problems. I tried the disk utility app to verify and repair disk. Says everything's fine. Switched off wifi to see if it was anything from outside. Still happens.
The only thing that has changed recently has been the MacOS update.
    Any hints?

And the next few seconds if you need it.

  • Start up problems after Safari 3.1 and Security update

Updated safari and security update last night.
Safari downloaded and installed but there was an error downloading or installing the security update, I forgot.
After I restarted everything booted up fine, but was stuck on "Starting Mac OS X" screen.
Did a fsck and zap the pram, still stuck.
Today I tried booting up in safe mode, stuck on the gray screen with the apple logo.
Then I tried booting up from an external firewire dvd drive. Repaired permissions, repaired the disk, but it is still stuck on "Starting Mac OS X" screen. Help please...
    Thank you

Ok i had a similar problem, with all the recent updates for Leopard, including the 10.5.2 combo update... the 12" PowerBook G4 kept getting stuck on the grey apple and spinning wheel... if it managed to get past this it would get stuck on the blue screen!!!
The way i got around this, after trying all these other tips was: Archived & Installed 10.5; restarted, waited; downloaded 10.5.2 Combo update, installed; restarted, waited; waited; waited; after getting back to desktop, restarted, waited; then ran Software Update only installing one at a time, and after each install, restarted, waited; when all Software updates completed, proceeded with iLife updates etc... It took a while (still quicker than the 3 days of failed installs and updates) with a lot of waiting on the blue screen (5-20mins) but we got there in the end. Disks where checked with Leopard Disk Utility before and after, permissions where checked before and after completing all installs, also with a DW 4.1 optimization. Also note worthy is the RAM was upgraded from the initial 256Mb (!!!) with an extra Gb.

  • Start up problems after security update 2014-002

Hi, after this update sometimes my Mac does not start up like it should: the Dock is not appearing and the screen is flashing between fully grey and thenormal background.  The only cure seems to be to restant a second or third time. Already resetten PRAM, used disk utility (no problems) and repaired permissions. Does anyone else has encountered this problem? Thanks

I have always had good luck with DiskWarrior. I've had serious issues and DiskWarrior has always come thru .
Are you nervous because you have never used DW before, or are you afraid it will hose your system?
By your report, it kinda sounds as if your hard drive has either failed or on it's last leg.
I'm guessing you had issues with the drive before installing the update and you did not know it. Updates tend to point out problems in a big way sometimes.
I run repairs on my hard drive before installing any updates.
I don't remember, does Jaguar have S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk utility? If so, what does it say about your drive?
    Dale

  • Start up problems after 10.6.2 upgrade

After upgrading to 10.6.2 my computer restarted and hung up on a circle with a line through it. I restarted, the same. i reinstalled Snow Leopard and can now run normally. I ran Disk Utility and it said everything was fine.
I want to keep my iBook Pro running up to date software, but I want to solve this first. According to a document on the support website, the circle with a slash through it means, "could not load boot.efi, or some other issue" and I have no idea what that means or what to do about it.
    Thoughts?

That's a little helpful. Thanks. I did use Disk Warrior a couple of years ago but stopped when it stopped launching, giving me some error code I couldn't decipher.
Now what do I need to do about? Will the problem reoccur if I try to upgrade again?
