Whenever something starts going wrong with the computer I suggest you first boot from the installer disk, run Disk Utility and repair the preferences on your computer and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. You can also repair preferences from DU on your main drive while booted, but to properly verify and repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive. A limited repair is also performed as part of a Safe Mode boot.
[Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214]
[Using Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672]
[Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751]
If safe mode won't boot you can try using single user mode and then run fsk:
[Mac OS X: How to start up in single-user or verbose mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492]
After that you're looking at getting [Diskwarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior> to try and repair directory, and then maybe [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. The two latter ones have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy but you have to have an empty hard drive to dump the results. Diskwarrior does repair in-situ.
However, if you're getting a boot error perhaps you can paste some of the message here because it may be that something else (potentially simple like a single missing file) may be wrong and would save you the $100-$200 of all the software purchases.

  • Start Up Problem-Help!

I just restarted my 1 1/2 yr. old G4 powerbook, and first an incon of a globe within a box was flashing in the center of the screen, then a tiny little folder (that looked like an OS 9 folder) with a question mark in the center flashed for a bit, and then it started up- a little jerkily & slowly, but started. What is wrong? I am about to head into law school exams and am a little paniced & don't want to do anything to upset my computer before I know what is wrong. Does anyone know anything? Should I take it straight to the genius bar?

    Hi Miriam,
    Try this first:
Open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and see if for some reason your startup disk options have been moved to "Network Startup"?
If so, just choose back your internal HD's OS.

My ipad2 shut down randomly and than start. Problem is remain after reset. What is the solution.

You can try restoring your iPad as new using iTunes on your computer. This will load a new copy of the iOS software onto your iPad.
If this doesn't work you may have a hardware problem and will need to contact Apple Support.

  • Satellite L505 will not start! Please help me!

My Tobisha Satellite is having a problem booting up. I am using the Satellite L505.
Whenever I try to turn on my computer the boot logo comes up, but then after that a black screen comes up with a symbol up at the top left. It stays on that screen forever, please help me!!!!

Try what drev9 said.    And you can also try repeat tries to get it to boot (hold the power button in ntil it shuts off, then power it back on again.  I once got my L505D to successfully boot but it took 3-4 tries like that.)    Or you can try walking off and just leaving it stwe a while to see if Windows  resolves the issue.   If it prompts you that Windows didn't start right, you can either try start normally or do a restore back to last restore point or whatever that other option is.    If you get the macine running, definitely back up or copy off all of your important data and pictures, before you shut it off again.
Probably what you're going to need to do is a complete Toshiba Restore that reinstalls all software back to factory configuration, and that will erase everything on the hard disk.   It's remarkably easi to do, provided you have a fast and reliable Internet connection to get all the updates installed.
I have an L505D-s6947 and it was purchased in July 2009.     It recently started having problems with starting up Windows, could not complete burning a DVD, lost some files, corrupted my original Admin account, and occasionally  the hard disk was "not available" when file writes were supposed to happen.    Doing a full Restore cleans out all the junk, it fixed my problems, and the machine runs reliable and much faster now, plus has no difficulty burning DVDS.   These computers probably should get wiped and reinstalled once a year, to keep the performance up and Windows running smoothly.

  • Start up problems, including from installation disc.

Hello everyone in the Apple ether, I need your help!
I have a powerpc based iMac G5 at home that I set up for my mum to use once I bought my macbook. I finally managed to win her over with talks of how much easier it would be for her to manage her photos in iPhoto, and everything was going really well. I recently came home after my final year at uni and some travelling to find that the computer is taking a long time to start up. This can be in both the grey apple loading screen but also once it logs in it can take a long time to display anything over than the desktop background, and even once it displays other items any attempt to open anything just results in a spinning wheel icon. At the worst case it has taken about 20 minutes to get going.
Once it has fully booted, the machine doesn't appear to be working any slower than normal. I tried using disk utility in mac OSX and verifying permissions etc and that didn't do anything. I then tried googling the problem and came across this article on the apple web site. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Starting in Safe Mode did not resolve the issue so after backing everything up I tried starting from the installation disc. This is not something I have ever done before and as someone that never really delves beneath the surface of her machines I was a bit scared of doing it. But I put the disc in and restarted and held down C just after I heard the chime, and shortly after it all went wrong. The screen went grey and all I could see was the image you get when it crashes (you know, the power sign with text over it saying you need to restart) with lines of code all down the left of the screen. I took a photo of the screen on my camera so can give details of the code if you need them. The last line said
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.3: Wed Oct 18 22:00:38 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.15.4.obj-4/RELEASE_PPC
    panic: We are hanging here...
After a few minutes on this screen the fan started working overtime and after about 5 minutes of that I just turned it off using the power button on the back. The machine has since started up normally (ie slowly) but is working fine.
So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to fix the slow start up problem without booting from my install disc, or indeed if anyone could suggest why I can't boot from my install disc? Thanks very much for your time and help.

It appears you experienced a kernel panic which is hardware related. A few suggestions for you to try:
Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from the computer & try the suggestions mentioned in the following:

    ==============
Boot up from your Tiger or Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose *"Disk Utility"* from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the *"repair disk"* button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and run *repair permissions* from Disk Utility.
    * If Disk Utility (from the install DVD or HD)is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

When trying to update getting (error surle error domain error-1100). It started yesterday, any help would be great. I have Mountain Lion 10.8.1 on a new macbook pro with retina display.

There are many people suffering from this problem right now (including me). It appears to be a server issue. Just wait and try checking for updates again tomorrow.
Some things I have heard indicate that this may be a regional problem, though what parts of the world are affected I don't know yet. A few people have been helped by deleting the following preference file (paste the path into the Go -> Go to Folder window in the Finder to locate it), though most have not:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
Note that if you are trying to download iTunes 10.7, that can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576
Also, note that there is no reason to be anxious to get it, as the only thing added in iTunes 10.7 is compatibility with iOS 6, which will not be available until the 19th, and the new iPhone, which will not be available until later as well. The new iTunes that was announced is iTunes 11, which is also not yet available.

  • Photo Gallery start up problem

    I have a glitch and it's probably me … but here's what
    I know.
    About Don Booth's Photo Gallery:
It's great. Everything is good - integrated with my CSS -
    looks nice.
When the page loads all is well except the first image in the
Gallery does not display in <div id="mainImageOutline"... (and
the first thumbnail is not highlighted). While I'm building and
testing this is OK. Just click a thumbnail and everything works
    well.
In the demo, the Gallery is operational by default and starts
up with the first thumbnail and Spry:detail produces the
corresponding image (automatically). That's what I want.
    About my code:
Except for a couple of "page layout" divs that I have,
consistent with my own site-wide style sheet conventions, such as
    <div id="wrapper"> and <div id="maincontent"> I have:
    1. Copied Don Booth's xhtml code directly from the
    Spry_1_1_022408 download sample.
    2. Copied Don Booth's css code directly from the same
    download sample.
    3. Copied Don Booth's gallery.js directly (without change as
    far as I know).
The only significant change (apart from CSS and xhtml
structure) in my work is - I added an additional Spry:detail div to
present additional datapoints from xml. This is not relevant to my
question because the issue that concerns me is consistent if I
remove this second detail div. The start-up problem remains.
The URL for the gallery page in question is:
    http://www.yhqg.org/Celebration/quiltshow2008/galleryix/gallery.htm
I imagine the problem is in gallery.js. You should know that
javascript is a bit like dungeons and dragons to me.
    I have an error report:
    Error: dsPhotos is not defined
    Source File:
    http://www.yhqg.org/Celebration/quiltshow2008/galleryix/includes/gallery.js
    Line: 55
    So, when I see:
    var gAutoStartSlideShow;
    if (gAutoStartSlideShow == undefined)
    gAutoStartSlideShow = true;
I imagine I'm looking at something useful but I don't know
what to do with it, or if it is the right code to focus on. I
respect the relationship with level 4 support engineers, but after
trying to solve my own issue for a few weeks I decided it was time
to submit my question. How do I get Photo Gallery to start up like
    the demo?
    Additional information:
There is also a series of error reports that show when the
    Gallery is playing (for example):
Warning: Expected end of value for property but found
'-0.0775'. Error in parsing value for property 'opacity'.
    Declaration dropped.
    Source File:
    http://www.yhqg.org/Celebration/quiltshow2008/galleryix/gallery.htm
    Line: 0
I don't think it is related, but that's what I know.
I tried to copy my xhtml (below) but it caused this message
to exceed allowed size. But I don't see that xhtml is the problem.
You can see the source at the URL (above).

    Hi Latauro,
Sounds like you need to turn your Slideshow into a Track, and then set the Track to display as 16:9 Letterbox; but first, you'll also need to encode your slides as wide Mpeg 2 clips (encode set to 16:9), too; to whatever duration you have them set in the Slideshow, currently (if they're not already wide encoded clips).
It would be good to stick some same duration audible or silent same format and bit rate audio underneath each of the new movie slides, to present players a nicely packed VOB.

Help!! Itunes keeps closing straight away and message states 'windows has detected a problem' HELP ASAP PLEASE!!!!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

  • Shut down // start up problems

i am having power related problems on the intel mini and i want to know how widespread this is before i confront apple support. btw i love the mini--this is my 2nd mini. i have had a power on problem with a mini even on the day of purchase and it was exchanged graciously at the apple store in white plains this past july.<this was a power button failure issue>
here's whats happenning....1>it misbehaves on shut down or restart by software. there gets to a point where the screen is black but the white light on the box stays on and the vents in the back are still warm. my workaround is to manually shut down about a minute after the software shut down by holding down the power button on the back of the mini.
......2> start up problem. the mini wont always start when i push the power button. my workaround has been to turn off my surge protector for about 10 seconds then turn it back on and VIOLA the power button can start the mini. i guess it needs to be cold to work.
i have been reticent to go to the store because i rely on this machine too much and i am not the only user here.
can some reader disclose if such a hardware failure is known?
    thanks in advance.

thanks. i hadn't thought about the surge protector.
keyboard and mouse are bluetooth.monitor is digital 24". i have an external powered usb hub which runs my time machine external drive. i keep everything else unplugged from the usb hub during startup and shutdown because my ipod shuffle caused startup problems in the past.
i had similar troubles with my first mini when it was plugged directly into a wall socket. the surge protector seems to help--at least i can cold start the mini without unplugging it.
i have a genius bar apptmt this evening and i will see what gives. i am glad i made apple put in their own overpriced ram so i never voided the warranty. maybe i will buy a care plan to cover myself when i am there. but i so want to raise this mini from 2 to 4 gig now that mem is so cheap. if i can get this problem stabilized...
my very first mini was powerpc and the ipod shuffle, according to genius bar, caused its demise due to usb 1.1 and usb2.0 handshaking problems. i still have it somewhere and plan to install a harddrive to get it going.
    thanks again guys.
and i'd like to ask others again if this problem is more common.

  • New MB Pro; start-up problems (again)

In case you remember me, yes I am the same person who recently bought a MB Air and had lots of problems off the bat (some of which required repair by Apple). It is working fine now, but it was just not working out for my needs. So, I decided to suck it up, switch to the Pro and sell that Air.
Now the PRO is giving me start-up problems. Gah! I made a fresh Time Machine back-up from the Air...then used Time Machine upon initial set-up to transfer everything to my Pro (thinking I was wiser this time, doing it upon initial set-up). But...no go. First my Pro would not recognize my admin password and I had to reset that. Now that I'm into my system, iPhoto will not open (I get a window vaguely stating there is some problem that it then reports to Apple); Calendar and Notes just show big question marks in the dock.
I opened a new user account to see what would happen: in that account, Notes and calendar seem just fine, but iPhoto still will not open.
Furthermore, in my support research I keep coming across stuff that talks about the install disk....But never saw one! Am I supposed to have one, or are the new Pros like the Air (in having online reboot sytem)? I did not see any disks in my box (which of course is currently not where I can access it to double check). The only place the disk could have been is underneath the frame inside the box, but there is usually nothing under there, so I don't think I had one. Could this be right?
Other possibly useful (?) info: I bought the Pro w an 8GB RAM upgrade, which was installed right in store. When I opened a new user account I got a window talking about "automatic login" and how the computer would start to an account that was named after the store where I bought the computer if i did not turn it off. I did turn it off but I would like to get rid of this "store account"...but is not listed as a User acct so I don't know how to find it in order to get rid of it.
    Help?!

Thanks for the input. I totally agree that I'd like to take this one back and exchange for a new one. Only problem is that I am traveling for work internationally until after the 14-day deadline. It's quite a hassle to get back to the US in time, though I have it in my back pocket to push for an extention to that time period...
Meanwhile, I had my 3rd Apple Support chat today. They finally gave me a dedicated Sr. Advisor who managed to get the Lion erase and install to take this time. (I didn't pay for the Mountain Lion upgrade; one thing having gone right!) I have to get green-lighted for another free Mountian Lion upgrade but at least we're on track at this point. Fingers crossed it continues that way!
At the rate they're going with me this summer, I should think a discounted AppleCare is in order or SOMETHING. Gah!
For any future problem-having readers, I'm afriad they did not seem to understand/answer why this was happening, so I've no wisdom to impart!
    For the responders: Thanks again!
