Start up problems with Jag/eMac

I'm having problems with my eMac starting up with Jag (latest version). BEHAVIOR: It hangs after the gray Apple, after the blue screen with the extensions and gives only a blue screen (mouse in upper left hand corner of screen) and appears to blink to a slightly lighter blue screen then back.
Here's what I've tried.
1) Boot to Safe Mode (hold down shift key right after start up chime). Results: gives gray Apple, blue screen with extensions loading showing 'Safe' then blue screen as in BEHAVIOR (above).
2) Boot from OS X Jag install disk (hold down C key after start up chime), run Disk Utility to Repair Permissions & Repair Disk. Results: permissions repaired; disk repaired (but gives msg 'overlapped extent allocation file 1294823d/1294824d" even when Repair Disk done at least 2x, probably 4x). Restart gives BEHAVIOR above.
3) Boot to the OS 9 install disk (came with computer). Results: starts the install CD but I get error message that hard drive cannot be mounted and asks if I want to initialize (which I don't).
4) Zap PRAM (hold down Cmd-Opt-P-R as I power up, wait for 5 chimes; then restart). Results: see BEHAVIOR above.
5) Boot in Target mode (hold down T after start up chime). Results: able to mount the eMac hard disk on my iBook (Panther) and recover files. Ran Repair Disk from the Panther Disk Utility on the mounted eMac hard disk (found the same 'overlapped extent' error message found above). I get the message "The volume eMac HD was repaired successfully. Repair attempted on 1 volume HFS volume repaired." But on reboot, I get the same BEHAIVIOR above.
6) Hardware test (from CD that came with eMac, ver 1.2.1) was run. Results: all passed (ran it 2x with same results).
Is this one of those 'overlapped' problems that nothing else will (easily) will work except a) backup files (via FW) and b) erasing hard disk and reinstall?
Is Disk Warrior really that good? Good enough to fix this without having to back, erase and reinstall the OS?
Thanks,
Richard
eMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   multiple systems

Thanks for the Apple doc. I followed the directions (new terratory for me) and successfully removed the overlapped files. But my system gave the same behaviour (wouldn't start up), even after the overlap was not detected via Disk Repair or fsck).
So I did an erase and install (after backup via target mode) from my system disks, downloaded all the updates, etc. And I can get a system start!
But now I cannot add a printer to the Print Center. Argh (never had these kinds of problems with Macs before; usually an erase/install cures all).
I've repaired permissions, run everything I can find with the Printer Center Repair v. 3.0.3 from www.fixamac.net, rebooting after everything tried. Still the Print Center unexpectedly quits when I try to add a printer.
I'm poking around the Printing & Faxing discussion group but not turning up anthing that works. Any Ideas?

  • Problems with my eMac. NEED YOUR HELP!

    Hai,
I'm new right here, and i'm not very good at english, but I have problems with my eMac so I hope that someone can help me!
When I boot my Emac there's a screen that says:'
'to continye booting, type 'mac-boot' and press return.'
    When I typed mac-boot I pressed enter(because I don't know the return-button) and then I get this screen:
'panic(cpu0): Unable to find driver for this platform: PowerMac6,4'
and other text with a lot of numbers.
    Also in that screen stands:
'you need to restart your computer. hold the power button for several seconds or press the restart button'
I hold the power butten for several seconds and I put the computer on again, but than I'm getting the same texts&things.
So, can anyone help me, or do I have to go to the Macstore?(Does anybody know how much that costs?)
    Thanks for reading& maybe helping!
    Kisses from Amsterdam!

There are so many unknowns here it is hard to know the right advice to give.
+I didn't get any disks with it. Do you know if I can buy them somewhere?+
You may be able to get 10.4 Tiger disks from an Apple store, but that depends on where you live. Apple usually only sells their latest OS which is currently 10.5 Leopard, but I would think your eMac would be best with 10.4 Tiger. If you can get them from an Apple store, ask if they give a student discount if you are eligible as that can be a saving.
Normally every Mac, _new or used has its own disks,_ including an Apple Hardware Test CD. These disks are useful if you want to reinstall your operating system, but also useful for diagnostics and and some software repairs. The thing is, you could get hold of some disks and still find your machine has something broken in the hardware, and you will have spent money on the disks for nothing.
It would be better to determine if the computer is fixable before you purchased any OS disks.
Do you know anyone with an Apple computer who has some disks you could borrow? Or do you know someone who has an iBook which you could use in
FireWire target disk mode to connect the two together , and use the Disk utility in the iBook to run a test on your hard drive.
Even without a disk, you could still try starting up your computer in single user mode and perform some of the steps in this article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1411?viewlocale=en_US
which assumes you have 10.3.9 which you may have seeing as it is an old computer.

  • Hi everyone. I have just started having problems with iCal.  Events that I thought I had deleted are appearing on Print Preview and on print outs. Likewise Events which I have not deleted have disappeared from my calenders, but appear in print preview.

Hi everybody. I have recently started having problems with iCal (Version 2.05 (1069). Events that I thought I had deleted appear in Print Preview and Print Outs. Likewise Events that I have not deleted have disappeared from my calender (Month View) but appear in Print Preview and Print Outs. I see that there have been similar problems with Events disappearing especially in Month View. I wondered how print preview seemrd to be picking everything up deleted or not, and what the solution may be?. First time of Posting. I hope I haven't embarassed myself.

    Hmmmm.
At the very least there must be a "com.apple.ical.plist"...iCal would not function without it.
Click on the Finder icon in the dock
    Click on Go > Home
    Double-click Library
    Double-click Preferences
Look for a file called "com.apple.ical.plist" and remove it to the trash.

  • Slow in start-up + problems with Entourage

Since I have installed Mac OS X Lion I do have some problems.
My Macbook Pro doesn't start up as fast as he used with previous Mac version, how come? I unchoose the box to re-open programs at start-up.
Another thinhg, from time to time my Entourage (2008) needs to be closed to sent a problem report to Microsoft, before Mac OS X Lion I had no problems with this.
Will there be soon an update which fixes all these bugs?

I doubt you will like this suggestion, but since you installed a new drive I would recommend doing this:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Reinstall Snow. If you continue to have problems it could be got a slightly defective DVD or you may have marginal RAM.

  • Can't start laptop - problems with automatic repair, need acces to admin account but there is none. HELP! :(

    Hello,
I'm having problems with my windows 8 laptop.
This afternoon I shut it down, and went to work. A few hours later when I came back home I noticed the little blue lights on the keyboard (showing me that the pc was charging and that my wifi is on) were still on. Normally these are off when the pc is turned
    off.
I tried starting the laptop but nothing happened, the screen stayed black. I held down the 'on' button to force it to turn off, and turned it on again.
I then got a textmessage on the startup loading screen that there were problems with my C drive (only drive the laptop has), so it went to automatic repair.
*my laptop's language is set to Dutch so I'm translating everything :)*
    It gave me 2 options:
    1: Restart computer
    2: Advanced options.
I tried option 1, didnt work ofcourse, it just restarted and I got back to this screen, so I checked what option 2 had to offer.
I got to a screen with 3 options:
    1: Continue to windows 8
    2: Solve Problems
    3: Shut down
When I tried option 1 the computer just restarted and went back to the same screen.
When I tried option 3 it shut down as it should.
Option 2 gave me 3 other options:
    1: Renew PC
    2: Factory reset
    3: advanced options
Option 1 just restarted my pc and took me back to screen 1.
Option 2 I havent tried yet, because it erases all of my files. This is a last resort.
Option 3 gave me 6 other options:
    1: Systemrepair
    2: Repair with installationcopy
    3: Startuprepair
    4: CMD
    5: UEFI firmware settings
    6. Startupsettings.
I can't use option 1,2,3,4 because I need to log in to an administratoraccount.
The bad part is: the laptop doesn't have an administratoraccount.
It was my parents laptop, and theyve set it up. I always assumed the account was an admin because
I had acces to everything and didn't need a password to run things as admin and such.
    Turns out it isn't.
I get this message (translated) when I try to acces one of these:
'You have to log in as administrator to continue, but this pc doesn't have an administratoraccount'.
I can't believe microsoft added a check to see if the pc has an admin account on it, and even added a specific message to show when it doesn't, but they didnt add the option to just use these tools when there is no admin account present? What were they thinking!
Option 5 I havent tried yet, when I click it it says I have to restart to acces these settings, but I dont want to mess with something I know nothing about.
Option 6 gives me a few options like run the pc in safety mode, run windows repair and disable auto-restart after something has gone wrong with windows. But when I select one of these options it doesnt work. It just takes me back to auto repair. It just doesn't
    doe anything.
There are no other options. Nothing I can do. My pc is stuck like this. The only thing I *might* be able to do is a factory reset, but I havent tried, and that could also just give me an error about me not being admin.
Some backstory of what I think caused this problem:
I believe the problems started a week ago, last friday.
I'm using a program called 'AVG TuneUp'. This program gave me a message telling me it was 3 months since it had checked my C drive for defects or anything. And it asked me if I wanted it to do so. Unknowing of the problems that would follow, I pressed 'ok'
    (or whatever it was).
I had to restart my pc for it to begin, because it could only check the drive during startup. It went to 12% and stayed there for like half an hour, after which I decided to google (on my phone) if that was normal. It turned out that that option doesn't work
well with windows 8 and that lots of people's computers got ruined after using it. I stressed and I tried to shut it down, but since I was still in startup the only thing I could do was force the pc to shut down, so I held down the power button and it shut
down. I restarted and managed to abort the proces. The laptop started fine and everything worked.
A few days later a game/program I use called League of Legends started to act weird, because I could not log in on my account (for the game) anymore. Some error with IE settings, which I was unable to fix. For more info about that go to http://boards.eune.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/help-support-en/8Eoz315J-cant-log-in-to-lol-and-cant-log-in-to-steam-either-weird-coincidence.
Although I doubt it will help.
That forum post also contains a link to a post I made on the Steam forum about not being able to log into steam anymore. (Steam is another program I used). I wasn't able to log into steam anymore about 1-2 days after I wasn't able to log into LoL.
Also at the same time my Norton sortof stopped working. It showed up as active in my task manager and AVG TuneUp program manager, but it wasn't in my task bar and I couldnt acces the control panel.
Then yesterday I checked my pc for errors with AVG TuneUp's 1-click maintenance tool, and it told me my C drive was fragmented badly, so I defragmented it using the tool. Laptop still worked fine after that.
And then today I got the error on startup about my C drive having errors.
Long story shot: Problem is probably caused because I stopped the repair of my C drive with the avg tuneup tool before it was done, however its weird that I'm only experiencing (big) problems a week after that happened.
    Hardware info:
It's a Samsung Ativ book 6  (google it for all the specs :) )
    RAM: 8 GB DDR3
    CPU: intel 3230M @ 2.60 gHz
    GPU: AMD Radeon HD 8850M
HDD: 1 TB S-ATAII hard disc
    I've found this page:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-system/windows-8-taking-me-to-automatic-repair-but-no/6cbc995e-9ecb-4e28-8d6c-adabdecb8374?rtAction=1424369231072
But I don't really understand what the answering person is saying, and my laptop doesn't have a CD drive..
I really, REALLY hope someone can help me with this, because my laptop is basically 100% 'destroyed'.
    Kind regards,
    Christian Collaert

    Hello,
Perhaps the operating system is incorrectly powering down or shifting the wireless adapter to a low power state in order to improve run time while on battery?
Try going into the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC), locate the wireless adapter under the Network Adapters tree, view its Properties, and on the Power Management tab, disable (un-check) the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option.
Please let us know if that makes any difference (or not).

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime.

  • Sometimes cannot start PC: problem with Hitachi SATA Hard drive and K7N2G-ILSR

I have major problem with my 160Gb SATA Hitachi hard drive and my MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard.  Sometimes the PC can be started, sometimes it cannot.
After I installed a clean build of Windows XP Pro SP1 onto my new hard drive (as the only hard drive in my PC) and install all the necessary drivers, the system runs smoothly.  However, after about 2 to 3 weeks, sometimes when I start the PC, it cannot detect the hard drive and hence it claimes that it cannot find any VMI Pool Data (i.e. no OS detected).  What makes it really horrible is that, it is like the lottery everytime when I start the PC.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  The highest record was 8 consecutive failures (by resetting or by turning the power off and on again) before I can start the machine properly.  Also, the system sometimes just crashes in the middle of operating.
I have already sent the hard drive back to Hitachi.  Got the same model of hard drive back as replacement, but the replacement has the same problem, except with the replacement drive the PC can be started eventually after many tries, while with the previous drive it is possible that the PC cannot be started until after a few days later.
Also, it seems that my drive can detect either SATA hard drive or PATA hard drive, but not both.  (If I leave my old PATA drive connect in the primary IDE channel, Windows cannot detect the new SATA drive.)
Is my motherboard faulty?  Can it only use PATA drive?
My PC's spec is as follows:
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512Mb PC3200 SDRAM (set to run at 166MHz)
Hitachi 160Gb SATA Hard drive on 1st SATA channel (Model #HDS722516VLSA80)
Sony DVD+-RW drive and Panasonic DVD-ROM drive on secondary IDE channel
    Use onboard video (GeForce MX)
US Robotech V92 internal PCI modem
    SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Player soundcard
    Onboard audio disabled
    300W PSU
OS is Windows XP Pro SP1 (with all latest security patches up to date)

    that is not entirly correct.
many harddrives just come with different ways to connect them.
the only sata drives i now that spins faster is western digital raptors 10k rpm.
all other is running at 7200rpm.
    older drives run at 5400rpm
Yes to get the full benefit of RAID, the Raptors are the way to go.Anything else, no significant difference.

  • WINXP start up problems with Satellite M30

My M30 has worked fine for two years until a few days ago when it suddenly would't restart after running a Microsoft Security Update. It gave me different options of starting in safe mode, normally, etc., but none of them would work.
I have been told that if I use my recovery DVD. it will wipe clean my hard drive and with it all my files. I understand that my WINXP software is on this DVD - I certainly haven't got a separate disk. Is it true that I will not be given the option to try and repair or heal the problem and if this is the case will I need to purchase an WINXP OEM and install this separately? Or should I be doing something else completely?
Any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hello,
Did you tried to set your windows to a earlier point of your "system-recovery-point" which appears with that options -> boot in safe mode - boot in safe mode with network - etc.etc..
It this fails, then you have to recover your whole system.
At first, its true: you cannot heal or repair your system with the recovery dvd, you can just reinstall your whole system and than you have a operating-system like on the first day after you purchased that machine.
So your only choice will be to reinstall your system to fix that and to avoid installing EVERY update from Microsoft because I had many problems with some updates which causes my machine to do some things like no-boot or that some software crashes. Its better to stay informed about that updates and install them just after you verified that the update isnt affecting your system stability or performance.
To backup your files and to recover your system you will have to do following things:
You said your system is not booting up, but you need your files.
Just take a UBCD4Win (http://www.ubcd4win.com/) from Internet and boot up with this CD. You will get access to your files with this WindowsPE on CD and you will have the chance to backup your needed data on a USB-harddrive or to burn your stuff on CD.
Now you have to boot the recovery cd and just let the automated install-script do the rest. It will delete your whole harddisk and reinstall the system. After that you can put the saved data back to your harddisk.
I hope that I maybe could help you. If you have any further questions than just ask them.

  • Start up problems with G5- any ideas?

    Hi
I have had recurring startup problems with my G5, the machine boots up everytime i.e you hear startup chime and fans etc.. but it can take 3-4 times turning on/off for anything to appear on screen.
I have had this problem for over 3 months now, and i use it alot, i have tried using different monitor, bought new pram battery, done apple hardware test, had it checked at apple dealer and even bought latest OS 10.4.3 and erased everything on disk and started all over, and still the bugger doesn't work properly!
I would greatly appreciate any ideas. The G5 is a 2004 model and i use it with apple keyboard, mouse.
    Look forward to any replies..

I had the same problem with my dual 2.7 g5. I noticed that if I left the system unplugged for a while, the computer would start up on the first try. If it was running for a while and I turned it off or tried a restart, it would not boot up for the first 5-10 tries.
The end result was to take it in 3 times to get everything on the inside replaced. That solved the problem. I think it would have been cheaper for Apple to have given me a new system. The fixes cost more than what I paid for the computer. This system is covered by Apple Care. I am good for the next 2.5 years.

  • Start-Up Problems with Ubuntu Remix on Toshiba NB100

Today, I attempted to use Update Manager to install several updates.
During their installation the machine froze.
Now, start-up only takes me to the Ubuntu start-up page with the logo and an empty progress bar.
If I go to Terminal, I have the following script
    Busybox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5 Ubuntu12) Built-in shell(ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
    (initramfs)
I have no idea how to proceed. Is there a command I can use to start-up successfully or do I need to use the Recovery CD?
    I am a Linux novice.
    Thank you.
    David Lowe

I have precisely the same problem.
I'm using Hardy Heron with kernel 2.6.24-19 and cannot go past the initramfs / busybox screen. Going to another console (ctrl+alt+f1) shows the following message:
ALERT! cannot find device /dev/<uuid number of my hard disk>
(I checked the correctness of the UUID already.)
The problem is that I cannot exit the initramfs command line. "exit" simply doesn't do anything.
"Recovering" the netbook means reformatting the fkash disk, right? This is not really an option for me, and I am willing to go through some painful and lengthy steps to repair this problem. If you have any suggestions, I'm open.

  • Start-up problem with my Nokia 6630 series

Hi everyone! I'm new in the community. Please could anyone help with a problem I have with my 6630. I had just finished charging it and when put it on and tried to access an sms that came in the inbox was not accessible! Then I switched the phone off and later put it on only to get a shocker message which read -" phone start-up failed. Contact the retailer". I contacted the retailer who suggested I that the phone should be switched off again and later switched on. I have done this for the umpteenth time without success! Any one with an idea on how to solve this problem please. I will appreciate your urgent help. Thank you all.

Dear friend, the start-up problem I had with my nokia 6630 has been solved! I switched off the phone, removed the memory card and powered on. The phone to my surprise came alive. I switched it off again and reinserted the memory card before switching on again and lo and behold, my 6630 was up and kicking again! if anyone should have a similar problem, he of she should try what I did, i hope it works for others in similar situation.

  • New Start Up Problem with G4

I recently posted problems with start up not getting beyond gray screen and spinning cog device. Now having followed Mac101 ideas (thank you to Texas Mac Man) I have got further but still not in. Now the G4 loads to the blue screen and OSX box with progress bar. It goes through all stages of progress to nearly the very end. Then it stalls on "loading log in window" (or words to that effect) at the very end of the progress bar and it will go no further. I cannot seem to find anything in Mac101 to suggest where I go from here. Can anyone suggest what might be done. I should point out that if I do a Safe Boot exactly the same thing happens - it still cannot go that last step.
    Any thoughts gratefully received.
    Tim Rose

    Here's Apple doc.#106464 too.
Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread.
