Start up resolution is weird

Hi all, I just got my first mac on monday (nov. 21) and I'm loving it.
When I start it up, the white screen with the apple logo and the swirly thing underneath the logo is at a weird resolution, a much low resolution then the 24inch's normal 1900x1200. Once the white screen is finished, and the blue screen comes up the display goes back to its normal resolution, but I'm curious as to why its doing this.
Thanks.
(its a 24in iMac, 2.33GHz intel core 2 duo, 2GB ram, 750GB hdd, OSX Tiger (10.4.8)

Hi Martin,
found this in another post, give it a try:
This problem sounds annoying and I can assure you it has nothing to do with the low-resolution of Win XP
I didn't encounter this before but you should try resetting the system's PRAM.
The PRAM holds some parameters regarding mouse sensitivity, time zone setting, volume and Monitor Depth.
I am quite sure this will do the, trick and very few readjustments will be needed (time zone volume and maybe DVD region - all simple and harmless).
To reset PRAM hold commandoption+PR
To read a-bit more before doing so (not that it’s really needed..) go to:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Good Luck
Stefan

  • Screen resolution acts weird

    Hello,
For a year now I am using a MBP 15" with hires screen (1680x1050) na drunning on OS 10.7.3
When doing stuff in Excel, suddenly my screen kinda zoomed in and I never ever could get it back.
It is like everything is around 20% larger and I have to scroll to see the 4 ends of the screen.
When logging out and changing to another user on my MBP everything is normal, so it has to be a setting, but I am not able to find it.
Changing screen resolution in the settings does not help either.
    Anybody any suggestion please?
    Thank you very much,
    Mokum.

Not a reply, but an addition to my earlier message above and that might help.
When I cold reboot, the MBP starts with normal log in screen with grey screen and the users.
When I log into my own (administrator) account, the moment I hit the return, the screen zooms, and stays that way. When I log into any of the other 2 users, the screen stays normal.
    Thank you
    Mokum.

  • Kernel panics at boot--starts after 10 restarts--weird AHT results

I'm a long-time Mac user although I don't have as much OSX experience as I did with 6,7,8 and 9.
I have a just-over-one-year-old (of course) iMac G5 20" 1.8ghz. In the past few weeks it started suddenly darkening the screen and display a message saying it needed to restart randomly. Sometimes while being used actively, sometimes while just sitting there. I thought about it maybe being a RAM problem given the nature of the crashes but it was so infrequent that I decided it was more likely a software problem, and put it on my "to deal with later" list.
But now it's started doing that or displaying the "Unix-text-overlaid-on-the-screen" panics during startup. Once it's on and running (usually after half a dozen false-starts) it seems to be basically OK unless it goes to sleep, at which point it does the same thing on awakening. It does still crash on occasion after starting up but not usually. Takes a good 10 minutes of restarts to get it going in the morning, though -- almost like it has to "warm up" or something.
I ran the Hardware Test from the CD and it reported an error in the RAM. Originally came with 1 GB from Apple, so I pulled the offending chip from the slot that AHT named, the problem seemed to go away, hardware test reported no problems, so I thought OK I'll just buy 2 GB and upgrade while I fix it.
Did that and got the same problems. Hardware test reported RAM problems again but with the other slot this time -- with two brand new RAM chips. All of these chips test out fine in a PC with the same RAM specs using MemTest86+, including the original Apple RAM. (all 400mhz 184-pin DIMM CL3 from good vendors) I've tried half a dozen configurations moving known-good RAM in and out of the machines I have available, and it now seems completely random -- sometimes even the original RAM passes hardware test on that machine, the same RAM that initially failed it. I even bought 2GB of brand new RAM with the same results. All of this RAM works just fine in two PCs under heavy use.
It even gives the error while trying to start off a CD (i.e. the Tiger install disk), although I don't think it's ever done it while starting from the Hardware Test disk (but it may have always been "warm" by the time I got to that...)
So I don't think it's actually a RAM problem, but that's the only info Hardware Test will give me.
I've tried resetting PRAM, resetting the Open Firmware, resetting the SMU, no luck (all based on advice from other threads here). Repaired disk permissions, did a full disk repair while booted off a Tiger install disk. Safe mode does the same thing.
    Any ideas?
Couldn't this have happened a month ago while it was still under warranty? (rhetorical!)
I take it buying the extended AppleCare warranty now won't help me with this issue?

    Tom,
what a pain eh? Same thing happened with me, turned out being my logic board. Thankfully it occured a few months before my warrant expired. My logic board messed up again after my warranty expired, although it was covered because it was the same issue as when I brought it in the last time.
    hope this helps,
    ed

  • One Instance never starts up and more weird things..

    Hi,
We have been doing dozens of Oracle installation over the past few weeks.
One particular installition is giving us ongoing problems.
    This one site is using..
    Windows2000 Server Ed. 5.00 2195 SP2
    Oracle8i Ent. 8.1.7
Our client application(created in PowerBuilder 6.5)
This site (and all the others) have two databases. One is for testing/training the
    other is for production.
So far we've experienced the following conditions:
    1. Starting either of the databases from the Windows Service Manager, doesn't seem to work.
We then have to use SVMGRL to start the instances.
    2. After running some scripts in SQLPlus, and then trying to connect to one of the instances
from our application create a 'Shared Memory Realm' Error.
    3. We also have had a cause of not being able to connect...with a 'Exclusive Mode' error message.
    4. In our Oracle/Oradata folder we have the sub-folder that are named the same as our databases.
Inside these folders the file dates indicate that we have only really been connected to one
of the testing/training db for the past week when we thought we could connect to both and
    run our application.
The TSNNAmes.ora file shows the connections correctly, all brackets match up.
Again. We have this kind of setup working in dozens of locations around North America. But this one
location our connections do not seem to work.
    Any suggestion are greatly appreciated.
Brian (a programmer wishing he was a DBA)

For Windows 2000, try apply the service pack 2.
    Regards,
    vincent

  • My iPad screen suddenly started displaying weird colors

Hello, well I was using Twitter on my iPad 3 when suddenly the screen started to got really weird.
    (The picture: https://twitter.com/rgonzalezagui/status/469652534236561408)
I'm not sure if the pixels are dead now, I have never ever dropped my iPad, I have never had an accident with it. Please help me.

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without be charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Weird sound in start up and No bootable device

    Hi,
Since last night I cannot start my laptop. When I try to start, it makes a weird sound and then no bootable device. The Hdd test and bios does not recognise the hard drive either. I tried forced restart and also tried reseating it. But it still makes the weird noise in the start up and no bootable device. Please heLp.

Sounds like the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

  • SAP won't start after recabeling sap system

    Hi,<br>
    <br>
I have recently recabled my sap system (from wireless to wired) and now my sap instance won't start anymore. The weird thing is that nothing major was changed. When i read the logs from the work directory it seems it cannot load dbsdbslib.dll. I have updated to the latest version of the kernel and maxdb (kernel=7.00 patch 221, maxdb=7.6.06.07) and i made very sure i got the right kernel (NT AMD64). I also checked the environment settings for the <sid>adm user. The weird part is that it seems SAP cannot connect to the database, but the databse starts just fine and r3trans -d also returns no errors. Does anyone<br> have an idea what could be wrong?<br>
    <br>
    Kind regards,<br>

    <p class=MsoNormal>To answer your questions:</p>
<p class=MsoNormal>1. Did you create the SAP ticket, where this problem is
    reported?</p>
<p class=MsoNormal>I didn't report it to SAP because it is just an IDES test
system. I can easily do a reinstall, but i would like to know the cause and
    solution to this problem.</p>
    <p class=MsoNormal> </p>
<p class=MsoNormal>2. Do you have dbsdbslib.dll at this location? What version?</p>
    <p class=MsoNormal>Yes, i have the dbsdbslib.dll at location

  • [Solved] KDEmod 4.2.3, Xserver/KDM crashes right after start

Hey, I already described my problem in a different topic, but since there was no one actually having that same problem I thought I rather open my own topic here.
Since I updated KDEmod to 4.2.3, I can't login anymore. I see the Xserver starting and have these weird "graphic bug" lines as usual, but then it just hangs there instead of loading KDM. After a few tests I found out, that deleting the xorg.conf solves the problem and I can login again as usual. The problem for me is that I need the xorg.conf because of my Wacom tablet and also because I want to disable the tapping of my touchpad. Maybe that can be done outside of xorg.conf, but at least the Wacom part can't (as far as I know).
So, I'll just post my xorg.conf and the log of /var/log/Xorg.0.log, if you need anything else, tell me.

I already looked up the "signal 11" error message but didn't find anything helpfull. And I tried to make a "minimal" xorg.conf with only the touchpad and the Wacom properties, but then the Xserver complained that there is no screen set. So if someone could help me minimize the xorg.conf, that would maybe be enough if there are no other solutions.

Ok, I have no idea why, but the Wacom tablet gets recognized properly (it seems) by X. Still there are two problems I'd like to solve, one being the fact that I have a 16:10 monitor, but the tablet is 4:3. With xorg.conf I could set it right (Option Keepshape), but how can I do that without the conf file? Also, how can I disable touchpad tapping without the xorg.conf?

  • Front End Service is not starting

    Hi ,
Any one can help me to resolve this issue.
I have one enterprise edition front end server .if i try to start the front end service it give the following error
Server startup is being delayed because fabric pool manager is initializing.
Cause: This is normal when Pool is bootstrapped and indicates that the Front-End is waiting for a quorum of other Front-Ends to be started.
    Resolution:
If this event recurs persistently, ensure that 85% of the Front-Ends configured for this Pool are up and running. For 2 or 3 machine Pools, initial cold-start of the Pool requires all machines to be started. If multiple Front-Ends have been recently decommissioned,
run Reset-CsPoolRegistrarState -ResetType QuorumLossRecovery to enable the Pool to recover from Quorum Loss and make progress.

If understand the problem Correctly You one Lync enterprise edition installed is that right?
If yes Please note For a recommended Lync Server 2013 EE pool deployment, there should be at least three Lync Server 2013 front-end servers in the EE pool.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg412996.aspx
We recommend that all your Enterprise Edition Front End pools include at least three Front End Servers

If you just want one Lync server please install Lync Standard Edition
Front End Pools with Two Front End Servers
We do not recommend deploying a Front End pool that contains only two Front End Servers. If you do ever need to deploy such a pool, follow these guidelines:
If one of the two Front End Servers goes down, you should try to bring the failed server back up as soon as you can. Similarly, if you need to upgrade one of the two servers, bring it back online as soon as the upgrade is finished.
If for some reason you need to bring both servers down at the same time, do the following when the downtime for the pool is finished:
The best practice is to restart both Front End Servers at the same time.
If the two servers cannot be restarted at the same time, you should bring them back up in the reverse order of the order they went down.
If you cannot bring them back up in that order, then use the following cmdlet before bringing the pool back up:.
    Reset-CsPoolRegistrarState -ResetType QuorumLossRecovery -PoolFQDN <FQDN>

  • Poor resolution connecting my MBP to TV via HDMI. visable vertical lines.

    hey!
so I've been googeling around for awhile and it seems A LOT of people have this issue. but I haven't been able to find a solution yet. Story goes... connecting the MBP to the TV via DVI to HDMI gives poor resolution. the weird thing is this only happens every other time. I've tried it on my macbook pro (2007) and another macbook (2010) and it has the same issue with both (but only sometimes). any thoughts?
    thanks!
    Grant

To Csound's good advice, let me just add that there may be a specific HDMI port on the TV that you must use if you're going to send audio to the TV separately. This should also be explained in the TV's manual.

  • Resolution 1920x1080 not available for an external monitor

    Hi,
I've just bought a Tv Lcd + Monitor 24 Samsung P2470hn, I have a DisplayPort to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI cable to the monitor. But when a I go to System Preferences -> Displays, I only have resolutions up to 1600x900. The monitor supports 1920x1080 but it isn't available. What I'm doing wrong? Could it be the DVI to HDMI cable? The monitor has a DVI input.
One weird thing is that when I go to System Profiler -> Graphics/Displays I see that the external monitor has this
    SyncMaster:
    Resolution: 1600 x 900 @ 60 Hz
    Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Rotation: Supported
    Television: Yes
Note the last item "Television: Yes" could be that the problem? if so how can I change it?
    Thanks
    Gabriel

I find it very annoying that I have to use MiniDisplay Port to VGA to get 1366x768 or 1920x1080 resolution options in the Display Control Pane. If I use MiniDisplay Port to HDMI, I get some old common resolutions, (some weird ones too like 1344x1024) as well as 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. 1080p would be great, except this is more of a "TV" video input rather than a "PC" monitor input, I either get overscan or underscan (depending on the "Overscan" check box).
Why, especially since it's all digital with HDMI, doesn't Apple include nice 1:1 Pixel mapping using HDMI? It's very frustrating! I've noticed some, (generally more expensive HDTVs, like my 63" Samsung Plasma), HDTVs will do "Just Scan" (as opposed to "OverScan" or "UnderScan") then the 1080p with HDMI works beautifully.
All of my VIZIO TVs, I have to use the VGA to get 1:1 Pixel mapping. At least, with a high quality VGA cable (even my 25 foot one from MonoPrice.com that would cost 10 times more at a local store) does convert back to digital (for LCD panel) without noticeable noise and pixel shifting (or ghosting, which I've seen with cheap VGA cables, weird, seeing analog distortions on a digital LCD display, but hey, bad analog in -bad analog looking image out). Plus, unless you have the newest Macs with audio supported through the MiniDisplay Port, you can only get the TV speakers to work with the "PC" VGA input and the "PC" audio input (3.5mm stereo phono jack) next to it. With an HDMI input, the TV will look for audio in the HDMI source and not from the "PC" audio input.

  • Thunderbolt to HDMI resolution on Samsung monitor

I recently got a Kanex iAdapt Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter and an Amazon HDMI cable to hook up my MBP to a Samsung notebook.
I am getting a picture on my monitor (I saw on the boards that the most commom problem was not getting any picture at all), it's just not setup right. The resolution looks weird and it's really hard on the eyes.
I've tried all resolutions System Preferences give me (1080p, 1080i, 1600x900, 1344x1008, etc) and it's still not looking right.
Does anybody know what might help this issue?
Ps.: The monitor I'm using is the Samsung SyncMaster P2270HN
    Thanks!

    Nandasaboia,
    I'm having a similar problem with a client's mid 2011 17" MBP  i7 with thunderbolt connection and a Samsung P2770FH.
I'm using a mini-display-to-HDMI cable to go from the thunderbolt port on the 2011 17" MBP to the HDMI input on the back of the monitor.  The monitor works fine in 720p, but in 1080i it is blurry and in 1080p the bottom 2/3 of the screen flickers and goes all snowy every few seconds.
The weird thing is my 2009 15" MBP Intel Core 2 Duo with a Mini-Display port works just fine in 1080p.  Everything is clear and crispy just that way you would expect.  So it isn't the monitor, and it isn't the cable.  It sounds like it is at best a driver issue with sending a Display-port signal via a Thunderbolt port, but at worst it could be that there needs to be a new controller for the Thunderbolt port hardware.
Here's a post about it in more detail.  It talks about the Apple Thunderbolt Display not the MBP, but I think the reason for the trouble could be the same.   I don't know, I have to do more research on the topic.

  • Higher Screen Resolutions on MBP

I dont post many questions here on the forum... But heres my rant of the day.
I have been a mac user for only a short while... making my first hardware purchase a few months ago (iMac 20").
After using the iMac for a while i realized that I wanted to upgrade my 3 year old Dell Inspiron 8600. But there lies the problem. The hardware specs on the new MBP's are outstanding except one thing, display resolution.
On my Dell I purchased the WUXGA screen that runs 1920x1200 natively on a 15.4" screen. I dont understand why apple decides to put these cheaper/lower resolution panels into there hardware?
Wouldnt it make since if you are going to release a top of the line machine you would follow suit with the LCD panels?
Just my two cents, please set me straight if I have crossed a line posting this here at an apple forum.
    Adam

No, you're not out of line. And I think a fair number of people agree with you.
However, I think Apple's position is that any display/resolution combination that results in a pixel density much more than about 100-120 dpi simply makes things appear too small for most people and reduces visual consistency and usability. I happen to agree with them.
Sure, you can fiddle with font sizes and other settings in an attempt to offset the high pixel density, but most graphics used by the OS and on web sites don't scale well (in Windows and Mac OS X). As a result, you can get normal-sized text but everything else appears tiny. It looks odd and it's harder to use.
What we need is resolution independent scaling of the entire UI, and this needs to happen in the OS, in applications, and in web content. This would allow you to resize everything in the interface, making it as large or as small as you want regardless of the actual pixel density of your hardware. Of course, higher density displays provide sharper visuals, so manufacturers would naturally start increasing resolutions, even beyond today's densities, limited only by cost and GPU performance.
The good news is that Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger already has the underpinnings in place for this resolution independent UI, and 10.5 Leopard is reportedly going to bring it out as a mainstream feature. But we'll still need to wait for the application developers and web developers to catch up, which will probably take a while.
So Apple's current use of 100-120 dpi displays isn't so much a question of "cheap hardware" but rather one of usability. I think Apple is biding their time until all the technology pieces are in place so this can be done right rather than the haphazard, incomplete approach currently taken by the Windows community.

  • Something doesn't seem right with start-up

Maybe I'm going mad but something doesn't seem right. When I start-up I get the usual chime, the power light comes on, I hear the drive whir a bit, the fans have a quick blow and the I get a black screen for about 30 seconds. After this the light goes out & the screen turns grey, then I get the grey sceen + apple and the 'wheel thing' followed by the blue screen and normal start-up. Perhaps this is normal, but I'm sure I never used to get the 30 second delay with the black screen and I used to go straight to grey if you see what I mean. Am I going mad or is the delay unusual??
    Neil

I know it's bad form to reply to your own post but thought someone might be interested to hear how I've sorted this one out. Thought I'd try starting up in safe mode and running FSCK, but having never done this before wasn't quite sure what to expect! When it started up I just got page after page of 'techno-jargon' which didn't look good - especially when every line seem to have the word error in it - can't remember exactly what it said but each line had something with USB along with numbers and letters and an error message (yes - I know this isn't very clear but the memory's beginning to fail). Anyway because this wasn't looking too good I decided to reboot and unplug everything from my USB ports (including a 7 port USB 2 hub) and restart. Lo and behold problem sorted. Then plugged it back in again and tried again - back to original problem. However noticed that the LED on my graphics tablet wasn't lighting up so unplugged that from the hub, reinstalled the drivers and tried again. Now everything seems to be back to normal. The black screen on start-up lasts just a couple of seconds and we're back to the normal start-up time. Weird, but at least I can now sleep easy!

  • Low terminal resolution during install

I'm migrating one of my computers from Gentoo to Arch. I can successfully get past GRUB . Right after the Linux kernel starts the resolution switches to only about 40  wide and a comparable height. When text gets to the end of the screen it continues past the end of the screen without displaying. The current Gentoo install hasn't has had this problem.
    For the specs:
    Pentium III
    nVidia Riva TNT2

Any idea on what's going on?
