  • Macbook slow/safari slow/no idea what is wrong

I had just bought a late 2007 Macbook(white 13.3") from my cousin. It was very fast when I first started using it and within one week it became very slow. It kept taking forever to load even when I finally got onto my account after the 20 minute start up. Everything I was clicking took a while to load and safari is even acting up. I don't know what is wrong with it and this is my first time using a Macbook I have never owned an apple computer. Nothing is working to fix it being this slow and weird..I repaired disk permissions twice and it kept saying something about library and I looked at my console and it said it had 4000 messages and they all said library and kernel panic..whatever that means. I am trying to re-install Lion but as I type my apple id it says "this apple id has never been on the itunes store before" or whatever..so that is not loading either as I hoped that maybe if I re-installed it would fix it. I am STUCK. Does anyone know what is wrong or what I should do? please help!!! thank you.

This is a MacBook Air forum, your profile indicates you have a MBA and you're asking a question about a Mac Book?
The first thing to do is BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!!!!! From your description my guess is the HD is either too full or it's failing. OS X needs about 10-15% of the available to run well. If your HD has 15% or more space available then I'd strongly recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. This will take about 30-60 minutes per pass, if no errors appear after the first pass run the test 2-3 more times to verify the hardware is OK. If you find errors then you can either Google them to see what they mean or post them here and someone will try to determine their meaning. Either way with errors you will need to take the machine in for repair.

  • Mavericks bugs: open in new tab, slow type, slow Safari, slow wake

I just upgraded to Mavericks in order to get Pages, which I needed for a project. Otherwise, Lion was working fine. Now, Safari seems slow, it often won't do the open in new tab click, it's slow sometimes when typing things in the web address area, and it has a slow wake-up (everything hangs there in black for a few before it finally wakes up). There's probably more, but those are the problems I've run into so far. Are these bugs that Apple is fixing soon? (Hopefully?!)

Only as of today. tryong to delete spotify spotify app, adobe installer and flip4mac (dont know what that is) tried to delete all at once and tried each one seperatly. • Mac lent tbk, mac lent, slow safari, slow safari

Hi, my computer is really slow. I thnik the major problem is with safari, any tips on how to fix this?

Is Safari the only application that's slow?

    Slow loading safari pages

Safari has become a complete slug -- so bad, in fact, that it will not load some websites at all. I am writing this using Chrome, which is a speed demon compared with Safari, and it has no trouble loading any of the pages Safari chokes on. Firefox also works well.
When I began having this problem, I upgraded to the latest version of Safari available for my system (10.6.8 Snow Leopard, Safari upgrade to 5.1.7, upgrade to latest version Java, running on an Intel iMac). I reset Safari, emptied the cache, but no luck -- Safari is as slow as ever.
Chrome is better in every way. Pages load far faster, even when Safari worked well. And Flash content works without a hitch (I keep getting messages in Safari that I need to upgrade to the latest version of Flash, but when I do it still won't work... and yes, Apple, we still need Flash in the real world).
So my advice to those dissatisfied with Safari: try another browser. Safari is not the only game in town. It is a mystery to me why Apple cannot make a browser that plays nice on its own hardware...

  • Macbook OS 10.5.4 running painstakingly slow, Safari unresponsive

I recently had to wipe my hard drive clean on my Macbook and start over new because it refused to start up and I called Apple support where they informed me it was a disk problem so they had me wipe out everything on my disk and reinstall the software.
I updated everything soon after this and everything worked fine. But after about a week everything started to run very slow. Safari also is mostly unresponsive. Sometimes I can get it to work but it takes close to 5 minutes for a page to load and for the most part it will never load at all and just freeze and most applications quit unexpectedly.
As a long time PC user and this being my first Mac my original thought was virus but Macs don't get them....right? I attempted to run a computer scan just to be sure but the second I started it multiple times it quit on me immediately
Any tips that I can do myself instead of dropping it off at my local apple store?

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    There are no Mac viruses.
Any tips that I can do myself
    You can do this!
You profile indicates you are running 10.5.4. You need to update your Safari software ASAP. Go to the Apple Menu/Software Updates. When the installations are finished repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
    For Safari...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Relaunch Safari. If Safari is still has problems, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.

  • Slow Safari startup

    Hi
I have been experiencing slow start up of Safari in my Macbook Pro (13in, mid 2010)
How do I address this situation?
    Appreciate your inputs.
    Thanks.

    Reset Safari.
No need to reset the item "Saved names and password".

  • Safari Slow in OS X Leopard - hard drive cranking away

I don't remember when this started, but my Safari 3.1 in OS X Leopard on a 8-core 2.8 Ghz Xeon Mac Pro is really slow at loading Web pages.
Whenever I go to a new Web page, I hear the hard drive cranking away and the page doesn't pop up quickly. The hard drive is quiet, then I click on a new bookmark to bring up a new page, and I hear the cranking of the hard drive as the page loads.
I thought this might have something to do with Spotlight indexing the Web pages as I bring them up, so I unchecked "Web pages" from the Spotlight priority list.
    Anyone else noticing this?

Do you not have a backup?

  • Safari slowness

I bought new Macbook Pro two days ago and soon Safari became very slow. I can not type forms since suddenly there is no type for a few seconds. I decided to swich to Safari 4 beta but same thing happened. It takes a few second after clicking a link that there is any response. The pointer finger shows up slowly on links.
I keep several automatically updated windows open all the time. It helps if I close those windows. Now I am typing this with a Firefox which seems to be immune to those open windows that slow Safari down.
I used Safari with my old PowerMac G5/1.8GHz and Panther and it worked just fine. Got this slowness problem only after buying Macbook Pro and Leopard.
Any ideas or do I better stick to Firefox?

The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 / )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Safari slow? Try these simple steps

There are many posts containing lots of suggestions for fixing Safari 4's slowness. In the past, I have had bad experiences attempting to fix problems following instructions that mess with technical and operating files and settings. Resetting and reinstalling rarely works and can set you back. Using outside software and MacWorld suggestions has really mucked up my machine. Using Firefox is not acceptable to me because I want the Apple integration, especially for syncing or backing up. So, I look for the simple solutions and found the following to be effective:
    1. Empty cache regularly. This long-time fix has noticeably helped speed up older Safaris. When its effectiveness diminished with Safari 4, I searched for other solutions.
    2. Turn off Top Sites. This "enhancement" evidently consumes time and visibly takes hard drive space. Someone suggested turning it off and then getting rid of the files (not folders) it had set aside. (They are located in home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Webpage Previews.) I found almost 3,000 files consuming about 600 MB residing there! They are simply saved web pages, so no hidden risks from deleting them. Personally, I was happy to turn off Top Sites. It's output looks good, but the sites chosen weren't helpful. I prefer to Apple-D a good page into a Bookmark Menu category.
    3. Turn off RSS in Safari. Many have said this slows down Safari. To get RSS feeds, I use NetNewsWire and have found it to be a good, non-invasive stand-alone RSS service.
    4. Set Safari preference to delete history as frequently as you can. I set it to keep for only one day. Don't know how much this helps overall speed, but it gets rid of annoying time trap. (When you accidently mouse over a previous day, Safari locks on that day, making you wait while it recalls all that day's history.)
These changes really helped my Safari 4 speed. Hope you have the same good results.

When I first started using vers. 4, I didn't notice any slow-down at all. I wondered about all the 'slow Safari" topics in this thread. Now I see why. It keeps getting slower and slower as time goes on.
I like the spiffy looking 'Top Sites' thing, but that and other excessive caching, etc., is not worth the performance degradation by any stretch.
Thanks for these tips. If these tweaks don't speed it up enough to suit me, I'll try the folder locking trick mentioned in another thread. If after that I don't see a marked improvement, I suppose I'll bite the bullet and start using Firefox as much as I don't want to do that. :'(
Bells and whistles are good - until they start to obscure the whole reason they're ringing and whistling.

  • Safari slow to open up web page

When I open safari, it takes a while (20 to 30 secs) to load it's first website (the home page). Once it opens, I have no problem navigating the web. My internet speed is around 6 mps, so that's not the problem. Help!!

    You're welcome.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and *slow Safari down*. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
Relaunch Safari. If it's not a third party plugin issue, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari.
If it's ok... the move that .plist file to the Trash.

  • My 2011 13'' MacBook Pro has started to run really slow.

I have a 2011 13" MacBook pro and this week it has started to run really slow. Specifically it takes about 3 to 4X longer to do just about every task. The only thing ive done recently was update from Lion 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 and a Safari update. Are there any suggestions on what I should do to fix it or on what could be the potential cause?

Things That Can Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.
If nothing here seems to help, then reinstall Lion:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Really slow Safari

So, having searched most if not all the info here, all the things I've done (Onyx, basic maintinence, resetting all that could be reset), the dang thing is as slow as ever. I also made a new identity and of course, THAT is fast as all get-out.
Should I just back everything up and reformat? That'll be fun...
    Thanks, JT
    emac   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    Three steps you can take::
Move the Icon folder in your Safari folder (User Library) to the trash. This resets the favicon file (small icons in the Address Bar) to zero, and you start building over. This folder can become rather large or corrupted, slowing Safari down in the process. If you don't want favicons appearing you can also access the folder in your Finder, call up the info panel (highlight folder, then apple key + I), change the preferences to read only and lock the folder. This will shut off the favicons.
Second, same Library>Caches - move the Safari folder to the trash. Safari will automatically create a new one.
Third - Safari Preferences>Autofill - this feature can slow down Safari as it increases in size. Good to select the edit key next to any of the 3 options offered, and remove items no longer necessary.
Give these a try and post back with results.
The latest version of Safari for Panther is available with the 10.3.9 combined update. If you upgrade, make sure you "repair permissions" via Disk Utility when the install/restart is completed.
