Start-Up Test failure on Pavilion DV6

I have a Pavilion dv6 and it has developed what appears to be a hard drive problem.
It usually starts OK but has started crashing and then trying to repair the hard drive.
I have run the Start-Up Test and it failed as per below:
Memory test: PASSED
SMART Check: PASSED
Short DST: FAILED
FAILURE ID: RLL7HH-5KJ71D-MFH14J-60RW03
PRODUCT ID: LR733PA#ABG
HARD DISK DETAILS:
Toshiba MK6465GSX
HP P/N: 594920-001
260GB.
Is this simply a hard disc failure, or something more serious.
P.S. I have found that if I remove the battery pack for several minutes, the computer will start and run OK for upto 15 minutes..

Typically, a failed Short DST is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. This is most likely a simple hard drive failure and not a sign of anything more serious. Replacing the drive with a new 640GB or larger drive should solve your issue. Once you install the new drive, you will need to use the HP Recovery Media you previously created to retun the computer to a factory like condition.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • Start up Failure - HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC

    Hi Everyone,
I just had a windows update and my computer went wonky
Please help and thank you in advance.

    Hello Maciah,
Thank you for all that information.
Since you have done a test on the computer. The image shows that there is some issues with the Memory (RAM) module on the computer. It could be that one of the RAM has gone bad. Check this by doing a test with One Memory module at a time.
By doing this you can determine which of the Memory Card has gone bad
Call HP if the computer is in warranty, they will help you with replacing the Memory Card.

  • Hard drive failure on Pavilion dv6-6000 laptop (LT069AV)

I posted this as a reply on another thread (xxx).   Thought I might get a quicker response starting a new question.
Persistent BSODs and disk errors culminated in a "disk not found" error yesterday on my dv6-6000 laptop PC.  Windows 7 Home, Intel i5 processor, 6GB RAM.  I like the PC overall - nice screen and usually great performance.  I look forward to getting it back online as it serves as my work as well as personal computer.
So, I need to replace my hard drive and reinstall the OS with a an HP recovery disc that I have yet to purchase (I can't find a recovery disk I produced myself after several moves), and then restore using my cloud backup solution.
The HP part number for the SATA hard drive is 621046-001 (this is a 640 GB volume).  I noticed that a replacement for this drive is available at CPU medics for about $90.  Would I be foolish to order a replacement, having just experienced a drive failure with this part?  Should I look to other manufacturers and perhaps go with a 750 GB volume?  Also, do I need to replace with a 7200 rpm drive?  Is there any disadvantage if I went with a 5400 rpm HDD?
    Any suggestions?
    majoha

You have options when installing Windows 7 to create partitions, you could just select the complete space & install as one partion then once installed use windows disc partition manager to adjust it to you requirements.
Windows 7 can be loaded to a memory stick & the link provided includes a tool to make the bootable memory stick.
Plenty of step by step guides on installing windows can be found on google, it is quite easy but first time is always going be slower due to learning curve, if you like super simple then hp recovery discs could be worth the money dor you.
Link below is guide on installing Windows 7, useful as a rough guide on what involved.

  • In need of your assistance please, for HP pavilion DV6 7007tx

    Hello,
I previously updated my bios into Insyde F.24 (see attached images) which was ok at first, but when i decided to update my graphics drivers to its manufacturers driver (Nvidia), I started to experience my HP Pavilion DV6 heating up whenever i play games.
I often check and put my graphics setting to balanced in hopes to lessen the heat up a bit.  However as soon as i play or open up a game (Fable 3, mass effect 3 and others) the fans starts to spin wildly.  To prevent my notebook from overheating i decide to exit my game after 30 minutes of playing and let it cool down first and start again.
I read some points that the update in Bios i made previously possibly has something to do with it, and am now asking your assistance if i can downgrade or roll back into my previous or original Bios.
Would it possible to downgrade?   My current Bios version is Insyde F.24.  I also searched for a Bios update at HP website and found out the current version i should be running is F.0A.  Should i run this?
Any kind suggestion i must do?
Kindly check my notebook info on below images.
    Thank you alll in advance.

  • My laptop ( hp pavilion dv6-6b27nr entertainment PC) willl not start up. the screen is blank.

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-6b27nr Entertainment PC   (Win 7) It would start up with the message "BIOS RECOVERY" .  It then would not start up at all.  I took it to a repair shop, they contacted HP and got it working.  i took it home and it worked just fine the same day, however when I tried to use it the next day the screen is just blank. i tried the take out the battery process with no effect.  i then tried tapping the f11 key at start up.  the fan came on and it made some noise, but has failed to show anything on the screen.  When I turn it on the caps lock key blinks continually in a sequence of two blinks.  (When i brought it home from the repair shop I downloaded malwarebytes and quarantined 87 pups etc. )

    HI @owe ,
Thank you for your query, I will do my best to help!
I grasp that you received a bios error and the notebook would not start.  You took it to a repair shop, who contacted HP and got it back up and running. When you took it home it ran fine.  You downloaded malwarebytes, installed and ran it, and quarantined 87 pups etc.  When you tried to use it the next day you get a blank screen and the lights blink twice.
Here is a link to  Computer does not start and the LEDs blink or the computer beeps .  Two blinks again refers to the bios.
You should not be having a bios problem so soon after just having it repaired.
There may be a hardware issue that is causing this and I would test the hardware  rule  that possibility out.  Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7, Vista)
If you are still unable to determine any problems, you would have some options.
You can try to restore the bios yourself.   Restoring the BIOS
As you just got it back from the repair shop, you could take it back to them to see what they say.
As you stated that the repair shop called HP, you may be able to acquire a reference or case number to refer to and call them yourself. Just to clarify you do not need the case number to contact HP support but it would allow them to more easily locate  any case notes from the previous call.

  • Pavilion dv6 wont start after factory recovery.

    Hello,
I made factory reset using HP recovery manager ( try both: clean copy or factory default copy with software), and the process finish ok. But after restart windows cant start and stuck on windows logo, if I try safe mode, it stops at message: "You cannot finish the instalation in safe mode restart the PC and finish the installation" . It seems that the "first time use" installation process is corrupted. The HDD and memory tests  finish without error. Also tried the Hard reset (Unplug the AC remove the battery and hold power on for 30 sec.) but did not help.
    Thanks for help.

  • HP Pavilion dv6 1334us won't start after windows update, stuck in Error Recovery

My computer is an HP Pavilion dv6 1334us with 32bit-windows 7. The computer did automatic updates and when it started up said there was another one avaliable through WIndows Updater. I installed the update and it said the computer needed to restart for the update to take effect. I choose to restart and the computer wouldn't boot back up, it boots to the 'Windows Error Recovery' screen where my options are 'Launch Startup Repair (recommended)' and 'Start Windows Normally'. When I select the repair, it says it loads windows files, then goes back to the error recovery screen. When I choose to start normally, it freezes the second it trys to start, flashes a blue screen and then returns to the Error Recovery page again.

Please follow the steps in the following document to troubleshoot and fix the boot issue that you are facing.

  • HP Pavilion g6-2230ew Start-Up Test and Hard Disk Short DST: Failed

    Hello community,
As you can see, my notebook model is HP Pavilion g6-2230ew.
I bought it one year ago, and it keeps freezing and hangs for about few months.
I've searched what i could do and I did a Start-Up Test to check if its the hard disk problem.
The result was that everything passed, but hard disk short DST failed.
I saw replies for similiar problem with other HP notebooks and solution was a new hard disk.
My warranty is still actual, but I want to ask if there is any other solution than exchanging my hard disk, and if that's what I should do - how long I would have to wait for such service.
    Looking for reply.

Well the hard drive has to be replaced and it sounds like it is overdue. The ordinary means to do that under warranty is to send the laptop to a Service Center. We have heard that, sometimes, when the moon is full and the Call Center rep is in a good mood, they will send you a hard drive, charge your credit card 2 or 3 times what it is worth at retail and refund when you return the defective drive. But that is purely a matter of grace and they do not have to do that. Turn around time varies all over the map from 3 working days to a couple weeks or more and there is no way to predict. A hard drive replacement should fall at the low end of that range since they should always have hard drives for replacement and it is a very easy fix.
On hard drive replacement under warranty, given that a new hard drive is well less than $100, I might be tempted not to lose 4 or 5 days' use of my laptop and come out of pocket myself but that's me and your cost/benefit analysis could be different and likely is.
They will return it to you restored to factory specs and will make no effort to preserve any of your data. When I do send them in for repair I always try to image the drive, if it is not too dead.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update, select 'View update history' in the left hand pane and then select 'Installed updates' link in the following window.
Locate update KB2962407, right click it and select Uninstall.  When done, restart the notebook, open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update and select 'Check for updates'.  You'll see the update you just uninstalled being offered again - right click and select 'Hide Update'.
After this you may or may not need to delete and reload the Audio driver - if you do, the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the document on the link below.

  • HP Pavilion dV6 with Windows 7 64-bit / reimage failure

I ordered the software and driver media to restore the HP Pavilion dV6 laptop I own to it's original manufacturer's state.  Seems like a relatively simple process but near the end of the process I get a recovery failure message! HELP!  The failure logs read as follows.

    If you have a "ChkErrBB.CMB : Detect some error during PININST_BBV. error", please try the following;

If you have another Mac, use Target Disk Mode. Connect your Mac to the other Mac using a Thunderbolt or FireWire cable, and hold down the T key while booting up on the problematic Mac. If you go into Finder on the other Mac, the first one's hard drive should show up as a disk.

  • Super slow start up on Pavilion DV6

    Hi,
I have a Pavilion DV6 laptop with Windows 7 64 bit OS. Until recently, it was working fine. Now, most often the computer just freezes at start up. After loding the start up programs, it goes into a busy state. nothing works. I dont remember making any major changes to the software or installing a new software before this slow start up. What should I do now? Will system restore to factory settings set things right? I also have data that I dont wish to loose in a secondary partition. So, if I restore it to factory settings, will I loose that partition?

    Hello Sedhu,
Could you please let me know the product number and the model number of this computer. You can find this information on the back of the computer under the battery compartment.

  • Dedicated Graphic Card Failure (ATI) - HP Pavilion DV6

    Hey guys,
I have HP pavilion Dv6 which have AMD Radeon Graphics card(may be 69xx or 74xx radeon series 1Gb ddr3).
    Currently i have installed Windows 7 & Ubuntu(Dual boot).
    Problem:
I was playing NFS when the system froze,so i turned it off forcefully, after that laptop always get stuck at windows logo.I also tried to switch the (bios)dynamic option(graphic) to fixed,in this option i do get past the logo but i am presented with blank screen ,in short no luck.
However i have managed to get it to work with ubuntu with intel default video card , through advanced recovery option.
What can i do to use some how similar approach for windows 7 i.e disable dedicated video card?
Can Graphics card can be repaired/changed easily?
    Thanks

Have you checked the hard drive using Diagnostics in BIOS? Or F2 immediately after power on? (F2 may not work if you deleted the Diagnostic partition to install Ubuntu)

  • Pavilion dv6 - loud beeping sound when starting +sound problem

i just bought an hp pavilion dv6 notebook LR732PA and every time i turn it on there's a loud beeping sound, and i'm not sure if this is normal but it asks me where to boot from (pc hard drive) and which oS (windows 7 64-bit). does anyone know how to stop the beeping?
Also sometimes the sound stops working altogether and an icon appears on the screen with a circle moving around it, and when i try to put the volume up the bar slides back down. it usually can be fixed by closing some programs and processes, it happens sometimes when ive just got 2 programs running and i close one and its ok, or if its not i have to restart. is this something to do with RAM or some kind of sound setting?
    Thanks =)

There could possibly be a RAM issue here are a couple of troubleshooting links that might resolve your issue or give you an idea what the beeping is referring to.
