Start up time air vs pro

Looking to buy mac air or mac pro notebook for my wife.  Does the Air have a significantly shorter start-up time from "power off" mode vs the Pro or are they similar?

Hey!! I got my MacBook Air a month ago, and it's great! Anyway, the startup time is supposedly like 15 seconds for the Air, but in reality, it's like 7. You hit the button, wait 1 or 2 seconds for the screen to turn white, see the apple logo and BAM!!!! I read online (I think this is true) that the Pro's startup time is like 30 seconds.
Anyway, if this is all you needed, you can stop reading. If you need to decide between Pro and Air, I'll give my opinion:
Overall: AIRRRRRR!!!!!!
For work: Either one. If she only needs to do things like store photos and make word documents (or pages documents), that will take up like no space. If she is doing heavy stuff like heavy editing and aperture and all this complicated stuffff, Pro. My Air is perfect! It is great for bringing to school, it has a super long battery life, it is silent (unless you play games) (I have a windows partition), and it is just awesome. It is super fast. Be warned: The first day is torture. It was fine the first few hours, but then, when I downloaded some apps and changed some settings, I got soooo stressed. It is fine after that.
Don't be scared about the whole 128 (or so, depending on the screen size and such) Gig space on the Air, it's a lot. I've used like 30 Gigs or less, and I've downloaded a lot of stuff.
Pros and Cons about the Pro:
Pros:
-Good for work
-Good for heavier/ more complex apps and such
-....nothing else really
Cons:
-Heavier than the Air
-Slower startup than the Air
Air:
Pros:
-Super light. I have the 13" and it is perfect. It is super light; I can't imagine the 11" weight...
-Super thin. I bring it to school, and it is very easy, and it takes up a tiny amount of space in my bag
-Makes no noise.
-Cold to the touch normally instead of burning like most laptops
-A bunch more that I could list but I think you get the point
-You get to show off I've had like 15 people (only 100 people in my grade xD) tell me how awesome it is and how cool it is that I have it and all that.
-It will last you through the day. I think my Air has died... maybe 1 time? That's because I accidentally left it unplugged when I thought it was plugged in and left it on playing games....
Cons:
(for both really): It is a money pit. I got the 13" ($1,200), a Windows partition for games and such (like $200), a SuperDrive (used for CDs) ($79), and a bag (like $70). My mom bought applecare and one to one.... which was a lot of money.... I think.... All in all... like $1,200-$1,500+ depending on what you need/want. What I did: Bought it on tax free weekend. Also, because I'm a student (in high school but taking college classes), they gave me like $50 off. Also, they gave me a $100 gift card for apps.
-I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but whenever I use the keyboard or touch the screen or something, I get oil from my hands all over it. This bothers me so I have to clean it every few days.
All in all, I would suggest she gets a Pro. I've had problems with my Air, but they resolve themselves in like hours or so, and they are tiny things that 90% of people wouldn't notice/ care about. I love my computer. It is fast, light, last a long time, and just... stress relieving. There are tons of things I didn't talk about..... haha..... this is a long answer.... I hope she likes her computer!!!

  • How long is the start up time with macbook pro retina?

I just bought a new 13 inch macbook pro with retina display.  It is using osx mavericks.
It takes about 21 seconds to start up.  I watched a demo on youtube and the demo showed it should take about 12 seconds to start up.
I have two users on the computer and each user requires a password.  Would that take it longer to start up?  The demo had one user and it didn't require a password.
I also briefly had sophos antivirus installed but uninstalled it.  I don't know if this could have slowed it down, but it is off the computer now. I also have the firewall turned on...could this slow it?
    Thanks for any input!

AppleCare will only replace your battery if it has significantly lower than expected capacity within one year of buying. After a year it's not covered.
Your battery's capacity very much depends on how you treat the battery. If it's always in a hot environment and if you're always draining the battery to 0% charge (two things that decrease Lithium-Ion battery life), then the capacity that you have is not too surprising.
You could try calling AppleCare but I don't know that you'll get anywhere with them considering that it's been more than a year.

  • Macbook Air 11  Late 2010 - Slow start up times

I used to have a start up time of around 10-15 seconds with my mb air (11 inch 4gb ram core 2 duo 1.6 128gb SS). Now, it takes 40-50 seconds to fully load it.
    I've done the ff
    1) verified and fixed permisions
    2) used clean my mac
    3) used onyx
    4) ensured that my hard drive is the start up drive ( start up disk)

Safe boot always takes longer because it checks the drive, clears caches, etc. Perhaps using Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner to clear out all your user, system, and font caches will help. As will doing this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Don't switch email providers. Switch to another email client on your Mac. It is not Yahoo. I have 3 Yahoo accounts and never have any problems getting or sending mail from/to those accounts. But I don't use the built in Mac Mail program. I use Thunderbird. I use thunderbird on both Mac OS X and Windows. Been using it for some time now with no problems getting my Yahoo mail, Google gmail mail or form my work email account.

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and

                    three times faster than wireless.

  • My mac air is re-starting several times during the day, anyone have any idea what I can do to fixed it

My mac air is re-starting several times during the day, anyone have any idea what I can do to fixed it?

I was having this problem while still using Mavericks -- it started after a Mavericks update last spring.  During the initial Yosemite beta runs over the summer, it seemed to be fixed, but after the official launch in October, I had all sorts of problems keeping connected.  Its gotten a little better, but still happens to at least one of my devices every day.  Weird that we still cannot figure out why the connection keeps dropping on some devices, but not others, and then the next day, one of the devices that didn't disconnect the previous day will disconnect, but the ones that did disconnect, stay connected.  It's just sloppy, poorly written software for technology that isn't working the way it should.  If you turn off Continuity and Handoff on all your devices, you will probably see that everything stays connected.  With those turned off on all devices, TC stayed connected to everything for over a month.  The day I turned Continuity back on, all the problems started again.  It had something to do with the bluetooth version being used, the wifi routine, and Apple's AirPlay technology not quite getting along with each other.

  • Macbook Air 11'' Start Up Time?

before updating my macbook air to the latest software my startup time was incredibly short! now that i have updated my macbook air to the latest software the start up time seems to be alot longer.. has anyone else had this issue?

I keep my system clean using Onyx. It's a free download and keeps OSX running very efficiently. Example: my boot time is about 10-12 seconds (the little wheel that starts after the Apple shows doesn't make quite one revolution before the screen goes blue and shows the desktop. It also keeps shutdown fast also. It's good to run it after any significant updates, software installs, etc. or just run it monthly.
I just ran it again after the 10.6.6 update and still booting fast.

    Give it a shot.

  • MacBook Pro start-up time?

    Hello,
I have the (I think) 2009 edition of the MacBook Pro, although it was bought in April 2010. It's the 13" model, 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / 2GB Memory / 160GB hardrive.
Is a start-up time of 53 seconds slow?
It's gone from about 35 seconds, from pressing the on/off button to a fully loaded desktop - on Snow Leopard, to 53 seconds on Lion.
The hardrive had 75.24GB of free space, it has 61 applications which is not a lot, it's got the latest software update, I dont check the "Reopen windows when logging back in" box when turning the laptop off, no viruses, and there are no Login Items, nor any folders/files at all on the Desktop to load.
It may take 53 seconds to load, but only around 5 to shut down.
Is that slow? and how can I get it quicker?

My Early 2011 MBP 4GB RAM, 5,400 RPM drive perfectly optimized running 10.6.8 (faster than 10.7) from Bong to Desktop takes about 35-40 seconds.
So since your machine is a bit dated, drive is a little older and using a older SATA, you've upgraded to 10.7 over 10.6 so your less optimized, your using Lion, and your RAM is 2GB.
Sounds about right for your case.
If you want to try something, hold command r and boot into Lion Recovery Partition, then use Disk Utility to Repair Disk.
Then download the free OnyX for OS X Lion and run all the checks, cleaning and maintainence aspects and reboot at the end (must) and after your caches are rebuilt, do a second boot and see how your boot times improved.

It needs the user password for the wireless router, that would have been set by whomever installed the router, if that was you then try to find the password. If you can not find the password reset the router to factory default and set it up again.

  • Macbook pro (2012) was swapped for a new one and my empty hard rive was swapped, but now my start up time has doubled?

I bought a Macbook 2 weeks ago, in the first week one of the keys broke off so I went to the Apple store and they replaced the whole thing for me. I was asked if I wanted to swap the hard drive for my old one and I said yes just to save myself time, even though my hardrive is completely empty- I havent downloaded any programs, saved any pictures etc.
Now my start up time on this new Macbook has pretty much doubled - its a blank lit-up screen for a long time before the apple and log in bar appears - has any one else had this problem? This didn't happen on my old one!

first - go to system preferences - startup disk and select your hard drive as the startup drive....restart your macbook....
if that doesn't do it, open disk utility and verify your disk permissions - repair them if errors are found....once the repair is done, restart your macbook...
see if the above sorts outs your issues....
    good luck

My project's start time is 8-bars before any material, or tempos, or anything...
Can't move the start time back to ")" (zero)    STUCK!!  at -8
The song now has 20 seconds of dead air time in a pre-roll.
None of these worked or revealed anything...
-tried making a new copy of song
-looked into every track's file information looking for a spurious entry
    -tried deleting the time/space

    Hi
Check for any Track Automation nodes in the "preroll'.

    Edit
You should note that generally negative (or zero) project start numbers should be avoided at all cost: there are many peculiar behaviour problems associated with them.

  • I start my macbook air up and a file comes up with a question mark. When I go to Disk Utility I go to update things or erase everything and my disks don't show up or anything. Anyone know what to do?

I start my macbook air up and a file comes up with a question mark. When I go to Disk Utility I go to update things or erase everything and my disks don't show up or anything. Anyone know what to do?

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
