Start up to apple screen only help!

This morning I attempted to install the security update for Tiger (intel) on my Macbook Pro. The first time I tried to install it, I got an error message saying something about it being unable to install and to try again. So I tried again. The second time it also didn't work but instead told me that it was unable to expand the update.
So I decided to go to work and deal with it there. I put my computer to sleep and went in to work.
When I got to work I woke my computer up and started to do things but realized that it was unable to connect to network. I tried to connect using airport and the ethernet, neither worked.
So I decided to restart and try again. It froze trying to shut down so I had to force it to shut down. Then when I tried to turn it back on it didn't get any farther than the apple screen with the indicator wheel spinning underneath it.
That is where is hangs now if I try to start it. It always gets to the apple screen with the indicator underneath.
I called apple but discovered (read the fine print kids) that I only get free phone support for 90 days with my original applecare so they couldn't help me.
I went to the help pages and did everything they suggested.
I ran disk utility repair (twice!) and both times it said no repairs were necessary. I reset the power management unit. I also reset the PRAM and NVRAM (which incidently were replaced about three months ago as the originals failed and were causing kernel panics). My next choice is to do an archive and install as I can't think of anything else to try.
suggestions please? I am a scientist and I desperately need my computer to work!

Another option would be (if you have a USB or Firewire external hard drive) to load OSX here. Then boot off the external drive and you will be able to at least get to all the data on the old system that way and you could copy data back into the new running system. When you are satisfied with all the data you can wipe the original hard drive clean and use carbon copy cloner to copy the data back to your original hard drive.
A better option might be to just go out and spend the money on TechTool Pro and run that. Make sure you get the intel version. This should repair your system to a useable state.

What can I do to boot?

Restart with the Option key held down.
If the internal drive shows up, it's the PRAM battery.
If it doesn't, insert a compatible Mac OS 9 or X install disk, click the button with the circular arrow, and either repair the internal drive or install a new OS on it. If it doesn't show up in Disk First Aid(9) or the Disk Utility(X), it's either not plugged in or needs to be replaced.

    Hi cybertoof,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing a startup issue with your Mac, it's booting to a gray screen with an Apple logo. Try the suggestions in the article linked below, they will resolve most issues related to starting up your Mac.

  • Presence: Visibility vs Visibility (Screen Only) Help

I need help regarding this function.  I have made an application form.  I have a section with a few text boxes (not fields) that are for instructional purposes only.  When the application is printed these boxes should not print.  I have selected the Visibly (Screen Only) for these text objects yet that still print and I cannot find anything in the help features that can tell me why and tell me how to fix it.  I have made several changes to this application form from the original and in the original template the Visible (Screen only) worked for these text objects.  So I don't know what I have done and how I can fix it.  Can someone help me?  Thank you!

Attached is the file as requested.  I have Acrobat 9 Pro/Life Cycle Design ES.  I have also stumbled into a problem that users can not save a copy.  So when its submitted its a blank form.  How do I give them the right to save?  Should be an easier solution but so far I have been unsuccessful to fix it.  thank you for your help.

  • My ipod touch 4g turned off and wont turn on again because it is frozen on the apple screen. please help!

My ipod touch 4g turned off and when i try to turn it on it says its not charged. so i charge it and the apple screen comes up but stays frozen like that for a really long time, and then it just goes back to the "needs to be charged" screen. please help!

    - First try resetting the iPOd. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
-Next connect to a computer and restore the iPod if theiPod appears in iTunes.
    - Next see if placing he iPod in recovery mode will allow iTunes to see the iPod so you can restore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:

  • HELP! won't start up beyond apple screen

I've had my iBook G4 for about 6 months and I've encountered my first major problem. I've had several problems with my G3, but never like this. I've stumped the phone tech support and I need help.
My computer turns on normally, then flashes black screens, the gray screen with the mac face folder and question mark, then the blue screen with the apple in the middle like it's supposed to. Just when I think it's working, it shuts down. This happens every time, no matter what I do.
I've booted off the installation disk, and drive genius disc and it does boot up. But it won't let me repair or verify the disc! It says it needs repair but that there was an error. It will boot off my external hard drive and function fine.
Any ideas?!?!? I really can't afford to lose everything on my hard drive and I'm stupid enough not to have backed up my files in the last couple of weeks. HELP
    thanks,
    Audrey

Well, you could pick up an external firewire enclosure, empty; and after
you get the computer's drive replaced, put the old HDD into the enclosure
and see about getting a disk repair utility that may be able to gain some
access to your data; that may allow you to try and recover what is locked
up in the computer's old hard disk drive. Even a third-party disk utility may
be able to get a peek inside; unless the drive is truly totally fried.
You may have to ask and or search to find if there is a recovery utility
better suited to attempting to get your data off a failed hard drive. The
commercial recovery companies do get a premium per MB they retrieve.
Depending on the data and your need to get it back, this can be costly.
If you do get a FW external enclosure, be sure it can accept
both the laptop size HDD as well as a standard size; then you
can also use the enclosure with a new drive later on to backup
your stuff on a regular basis. Not all externals are equal; and
if your data is truly lost, you could just get a complete FW drive
unit for backup and tech repairs at home; for clones, etc, too.
    Best of luck.

  • MacBook starts up to blue screen only....

    Hope someone can help.
My MacBook will startup with the chime, present the grey Apple logo, then go to the blue screen where it remains, every 10 seconds or so it blinks to a different shade of blue, then back again.
I've tried mounting it to an older iBook, but if I click on the HD drive icon of the sick MacBook it freezes up the finder on the old iBook. I've been good about backing everything up via Time Machine, but cannot get it to startup from anything. Help!!!!!!

    Hi,
Try booting from your install disk and check the hard drive for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility app open, look at the bottom of the window. Look where it says: Capacity and Available. Never allow the free disk space to fall below 10 - 15% of the total drive.
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    Try the Apple Hardware Test

  • Late 2008 MacBook won't start past grey Apple screen

I am currently running a late 2008 13 aluminium MacBook. After I updated to 10.6.7 I started having start up issues. I'd either need to wait a really long time, or I'd need to restart it while sitting on the grey screen with the spinning gear. This morning, nothing will help get it past this screen. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, what did you do to resolve this? Thanks.

  • Computer will not start up, get blue screen only

When I try to boot from a newly cloned and installed hard drive on my PowerBook, I only get a blue screen with progress wheel. I read in one of the forums that this may be caused by an incompatible Startup Item. There is one Startup Item listed that I am not sure about called "System Events." Is this necessary and can it be deleted? It is found in /system/library/core services/system events. Another is Iomega Driver, buried deep the system library. These items do not appear in the list on my G4 FW800. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Am using the latest version 3.1. Am really concerned as to the Startup Item "System Events." What is it, what does it do, is it a necessary Startup Item and can it be deleted from the list?
If all else fails, I will zero out the drive and try to re-clone. However, I just went through this on a WD 250GB drive and had nothing but problems. The clone went well, but after 2 weeks of running, folder icons started to disappear and finally the drive would not re-boot. Got many Kernel Panics. Testing the drive, I got and error message saying that the drive had "Invalid Key Lengths", "Volume Check Failed" and "The underlying task reported failed on exit." Don't have a clue as to what this means.
For this latest problem, I am using a Seagate 160GB ATA drive, purchased new.

  • MacBook Air, purchased 2011. Stuck on grey apple screen. Help!

MacBook Air purchased in 2011, never had any trouble previously. Grey Screen stuck in thinking mode, will not accept any commands.  Have let battery drain and re charged but no difference. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Being stuck at the grey screen generally means there's something wrong involving reading something from or writing something to the hard drive. Letting the battery die may be something that is sometimes useful for a phone or iPod, but never for a computer.
Step 1: try restarting in Safe Mode. Reboot and when you hear the chime and/or the LCD backlight comes on press and hold the shift key until you see the Apple icon. The bootup will take longer than normal because the hard drive is being examined and repaired.  If this works you'll get to the desktop but Safe Mode only loads a minimal number of drivers so some things won't work. Reboot normally and see if you can get to the desktop now. If Step 1 failed or if after rebooting you returned to the gray screen try step 2.
Step 2: try restarting in Recovery Mode. Reboot and when you hear the chime and/or the LCD backlight comes on press and hold the command and R keys. You should boot into a utility mode where you can a) check the hard drive directory and repair it if need be and b) download and reinstall the operating system and that's what you should try doing.
If step 2 fails reboot holding option, command and R. This is Internet Recovery mode which is similar to Recovery mode except the drive will probably need to be formatted or partitioned before the OS can be reinstalled. This will erase all your data.
And if this fails call AppleCare or make an appointment at the Apple store.

  • Freezing at Apple Screen

So here's my problem...If you can help and it works, Thank you so freaking much.....If you can't, my last option is to send it in..
So, I got my IPOd a while ago and it worked great for a good amount of time..Sure the occassional reset here and there, but then one time it wouldn't reset....I plugged it into my Comp and reset it and it just stops at the Apple Screen....Dies after the battery runs low and trys again....Sometimes if I reset it enough it'll bypass the Apple Screen and start charging, saying "Do Not Disconnect"...well, when I get that I let it go and fully charge, but when I click off and stop the hardware/connection on the Computer...Unplug the USB, it automatically freezes again..and when i try and reset and EVERYTHING...it just freezes at the apple screen.
    Help? Please?

Seems your iPod's hard drive isn't functioning properly.
You might want to try checking the hard drive using Diagnostic Mode.
Here's a link for how to do that: http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtml.
Also, if you have access to another machine, PC or Mac, try connecting your iPod to that one and see if anything changes.

  • Computer won't start, grey screen with Apple logo only.  Ideas?

Last night my wife's G5 froze.  It is a G5 2.0 running OS X 10.4.11.  I shut it down (had to use the power button) and tried to restart.  No luck, just made it to the grey screen with Apple logo and spinning wheel.  After a few seconds the Apple logo disappeared and a black box took its place, then the wheel stopped spinning.  It was late, decided top wait until morning before trying again.
This morning I tried to start up again.  This time got a warning(?) in upper left that a Firmtek item had already started.  I'm sorry I didn't write this all down at the time, so I don't remember the entire message.  Since there is a Firmtek card installed in one of the PCI slots I thought that might be the problem, and I pulled the card, as well as another Adaptec card that was also installed.  Tried to start again, got to grey screen with Apple but this time no spinning wheel.
Opened media slot manually and inserted Diskwarrior.  Tried to start with Diskwarrior but again only reached grey screen.  Let run for ~5 minutes, until fans started to run and were begining to get noisy.
Next I reset the PRAM.  No luck, still stuck on grey screen.  Tried Diskwarrior again, this time got another message in upper left.  Here is most of it -
    System Failure : cpu=1; code=60000009 (Invalid pmap)
    Lateset crash info for cpu1;
    Exception state (sv=0x609bb280)
PC=0x000a4ad0; MSR=0x02003000  followed by more similar strings, then
backtrace terminated - unaligned frame address; 0xfc088891
So what's the diagnosis?  I've had various issues with my G5s in the past, but have never had one refuse to boot with Diskwarrior before.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Whew, could be many things, from RAM, (or RAM slots/solder issue), to CPU #1 being bad, (CPU#1 is actually the second one.
Does it boot into any of these modes?
    Target mode...

Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

We might get clues with verbose mode...
