Start updates after hours then shut down

Is their a way to have updates start at a certain time and when finished shut down the computer.
Reason: I teach at a college and we would like the Lab computers to due updates after the Lab is closed and then shut down on their own.

Not sure if this works but you could set a schedule to start and shutdown in Preferences>Energy Saver>Schedule. Then in the Preferences, choose Software Updates and choose to check daily. Not sure if it will check for them in the allotted time or not but it's worth a shot. Also, if you need to validate the updates with an admin password, then it may not work. Being that you're at a college, I would assume you'd need the admin password. In that case, you'd probably need to either use Automator (included in the OS) or create an AppleScript (http://www.apple.com/applescript/)to do this for you.

  • Mavericks will only start in safe mode, then shuts down.

I think the new OS is trying to help me, but it's actually doing the opposite.  Does is automatically try to start in safe mode after a hard shutdown or something? Every time I start up I get the spining wheel and a progress bar that takes 20-30 minutes to fully load.  When it reaches the end the computer just shuts off.  I have been having some problems with the Mac itself - multiple attempts needed to start up etc - but in 10.8 at least it would boot normally.
I can't even boot in the recovery drive or in Windows, because the safe mode boot begins before the keyboard is recognized, so Option does nothing.  Any thoughts?
Edit: Tried zapping PRAM etc, still can't get the Option menu or avoid the endless progress bar of doom.

  • Games start to load but then shut down

I've tried restoring my ipod too, but all my games (Zombie Farm, Tap Zoo, ect.) still crash before they can open.  Is this something I can fix?

Try a reset: Push and hold the Sleep/On/Off button and the Home button for approximately 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo reappears. Release the buttons. No content will be affected.

Try quitting Newsstand completely - double tap home button, delete it from the multitasking shelf - then launch it again.

  • AFTER UPDATE GREY SCREEN NO SOUND THEN SHUTS DOWN AFTER 30  SECONDS PLEASE HELP

AFTER UPDATE GREY SCREEN APPEARS WHEN POWER BUTTON PRESSED NO START UP SOUND THEN SHUTS DOWN AFTER 30  SECONDS AND REPEATS ITS SELF PLEASE HELP

As for now, only thing that helped was an archive and install with preserve user settings. Seems after the reinstall of 10.4. everything that was weird has become normal again. I hope very much this state stays on for a while - or ever!
A comment to everybody: with problems that are common you get a lot of help from friendly users in here, but if like in my situation things get a bit more uncommon than the usual querks and troubles your bound to go through a whole workflow of tests and algorithms - i did learn some new things but eventually I had to go for the ultimate - the reinstall (of course, erase and install would have been more work.) and it's frustrating not to find out how it came to this problem. I wish I could nail it down to something I did mistakenly - i guess I'll find out next time.
THANKS THOUGH to those who replied.

  • Hi my desktop starts and then shuts down after the apple logo and an oblong box appear.thanks

    hi my mac
desktop starts then shuts down after displaying the apple logo and an oblong box.
    thanks

Sounds like something is badly wrong with your system.  First step would be to start up from your Mac OS X install disk, by inserting the disk and holding down 'c' at startup.  Select your language, then choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  In Disk Utility, choose your hard drive and click the Repair Disk button.
If problems are repaired, try restarting and see if the problems are gone.
If problems couldn't be repaired, you can try DiskWarrior, which can sometimes repair problems that Disk Utility cannot.  However, if nothing works, you probably are going to have to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch.  Hopefully you have backups!
If there were no errors, or they were repaired successfully but that didn't fix the problem, then you should try booting into safe mode by holding down the shift key at startup.  If that works, you may have some bad third-party software.  What that might be is hard to say, though.
If nothing works, try rebooting from the Mac OS X install disk again and install Snow Leopard right on top of your current system.  That shouldn't disturb your apps or data, but of course, if you don't have backups, you're in trouble if something goes wrong.

  • Acrobat Standard 10 starts up and then shuts down within a few seconds

Im running windows 7 professional. I was using adobe acrobat Standard 10 and downloaded and installed the files to be able to view 3D pdf's. after that it would open acrobat standard and then shut down after a few seconds. So then i tried to use acrobat pro 11 and then it worked fine. The problem was that this acrobat was only a trial version. I then tried to do a system restore to just have the acrobat standard 10. I then was having the same issues as before. So i unistalled everything including the 3D viewing program. Reinstalled just acrobat standard 10 and i still have the same issue. I manually downloaded the latest update and that has not worked. I am not to sure what to do???

With the uninstall (and hopefully deactivation), you should have also run http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html and removed the Acrobat folder. the reboot and reinstall.

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X

  • MSI Z77-G45 starts then shuts down and restarts

    Hi,
I got a brand new MB Z77-G45, with an i5-3470, 2x4Gb Kingston DD3 XMP Blue, and a WD Green SATA 6Gb/s. All that into a Cooler Master N400.
Plugged everything into the MB, powered it and it starts, the 3 fans spin, the frontal led flashes, as well as the 4 leds on the MB but nothing on the screen (with the "no signal" message)
and then shuts down. And restarts again. Shuts down, restarts...
It run with an Advance 600W and all components are new. Any clue?
    J.

Good news: a friend brough one stick of DDR3 and it worked! So now, it's just a matter of finding out if the Kingston I bought really is faulty, or if, as you suggested, it's a matter of updating the BIOS.
Either way, I'll post the update and hopefully along a [SOLVED]
Thanks a lot for your input, guys.

  • After Leopard Install PPC MAc restarts then shuts down

SO, I installed Leopard on a PPC mac 1.2 gig hz mac with firwire and DVD and 1.5 GHZ of memory. The install went okay (actually upgrade from last OSX), I got the Installed Okay message. The system shut down and restarted and then shut down again. That was it. What did I do wrong or what should I do. This is a family pack, I installed Leopard okay on my Macbook 1.8 ghz laptop just fine. Why will it not install on the Power PC mac? It is G4 AGP graphics. Is that the problem?

You do not need another drive to do Migration, You need another Mac to do a migration. I see that you have a MacBook 1.8 ghz laptop, use that Mac to migrate the account, you can delete it off of the MacBook after you send it back to the AGP. besides this will save all of the setting and account information for your daughters Mac. Currently I have a 60GB HD on my AGP and it is able to operate Leopard and Home files just fine, Now to handle the the very large files and storage of archive data I have an external 160 Lacie HD Firewire. BTY. The AGP can only handle a Max of 128 GB HD (master). Anything larger is not used, even if the HD is partitioned, Slaves and external HD are OK for larger storage. Additionally after you have done all of your backups and save files and apps. You might want to try an "install and archive" first. Some AGP users have had success with it. I did not and had to do a complete reformatting. FYI. My current 60GB HD used to be my slave drive. I had the original drive HD as the Master and both were internal. the AGP provides the plugs and bracket inside the AGP for two drives. But the original drive started to go bad and I have to image/clone the drive and moved the Master to the 60GB HD and moved the data that was on the 60 to the new external 160.
Additional: Make sure that you set the jumpers to either master or slave on the internal HD, and you can only have one master HD. Check HD information on how to set jumper for each brand.

  • IMac Starts Up And Then Shuts Down ...

    Hi ...
I'm hoping that someone out there can help me ...
I purchased an Apple 24" iMac about 3 years ago ...
It was pretty much working perfectly until 2 days ago ...
The last time it was fully operational I'd just switched the computer on for the day - opened iTunes - and was using the FINDER to find approx 600 MP3s to add to iTunes ...
Whilst the FINDER was searching for the MP3s the iMac froze ...
So I decided to RESTART the computer by holding the POWER BUTTON to shut the computer down ...
I gave the computer around 10 secs to shut down ...
Then when I pressed the POWER BUTTON to START the iMac again it reached the grey screen with the Apple logo and the rotating dial ...
The computer then started emitting an audible clicking sound as if it was searching for / organising data ...
The sound eventually stopped but the iMac froze on the grey screen ...
So again I decided to RESTART the computer by holding the POWER BUTTON to shut the computer down ...
I gave the computer around 10 secs to shut down ...
Then when I pressed the POWER BUTTON to START the iMac again it reached the grey screen with the Apple logo and the rotating dial ...
    And froze again ...
I followed the instructions contained within the EVERYTHING MAC booklet ...
I tried holding the OPTION key whilst starting up ...
I tried holding down the COMMAND OPTION P and R keys to reset the PARAMETER RAM ...
I also tried holding down the D key whilst starting up to test the Apple Hardware ...
My iMac passed the Apple Hardware Test ...
However every time I now try to start the iMac it reaches the grey screen (Apple logo / rotating dial) and then shuts down after approx 1 minute ...
Is this simply a boot problem ? ...
What alternatives do I have to boot up / correct the problem ? ...
I'd be ever so grateful if someone out there could help walk me through alternative actions to take ...
    Kind regards ...

    Hello
Try target disk mode see if your mac shut down from this way , to do that
hold hon at start up "T" on key board just after startup sound until screen show a firewire logo as screen saver
    and wait ..
if by chance you have a second mac you can use a fire wire cable to link it , in that way your mac is like an external hard drive , most easy way to recover data from it
Try start in single user mode ,  use COMANDE - S at start up
Try start in safe mode , use SHIFT key at start up
if in all case you mac shut down after 1 or 2 min of use , certenly mean a mother board and or powersupply problem
be sure to have perform SMC and PRAM reset at least 3 times each
    HTH
