Starting a Web Server

Ok, here it goes... What I would like to do is turn a busted up Imac into a self contained home web server. My main computer is a PowerMac G3 B&W running OS9 and my frankenstien is an old G3 Imac with OS9 also that I'm going to strip down to just a motherboard, drives, and power supply. I am going to network this all together so that my PowerMac can be in the loop but out of it. I did what little research I could on Classic web file servers but came up with how to do this with SE30s and 128's and a handful of clippings from web pages. There is older Apple software that does all of this but I am unsure about the setup and all where to get it and what it is. Im not looking to host a superduper website just some stuff and grainy pics with basic web page features, email submit maybe and a special area login for those special folks I know... Im not guarding Fort Knox just my PowerMac and the login. I know upgrading would be easier but OS 9 is wonderfully simple and the software is bargain priced..... and I like it to top it off. Any suggestions, sites, hopes, fears, ideas would be helpful towards my venture.
Thank You!

Hi,
The built-in Web Sharing control panel should be useful for certain applications (for example, as in KB article HT2973).
Regarding third-party options, the now free NetPresenz could perhaps be of interest to you. See also this short article about MacHTTP.

  • Problem in starting the web-server after configuring .so on AIX

I am trying to configure a .so file in iplanet fasttrack web server 4.1 on AIX 4.3. I have build the .so file on IBM AIX 4.3. But while starting the web-server it failed to start. It fails when I include the following in obj.conf "Init fn="test-init" config="ConfigFile". While starting web-server I got the following :
server terminated (signal 11): watchdog is restarting it
    failure: server initialization failed
Any pointers on this would be helpful.

I got similar errors in the past when the web server process was running in the background. Sometimes shutting down WAS does not work.
Before you start WAS ensure that no java process is running or better try rebooting.

  • Starting/Stopping Web Server

I am using WebSrvr.Active in my vi to start the web server but when I stop the web server the browser continues to display the front panel. It seems that the setting WebSrvr.Active to false does not stop the server.
Is there a way to check if the server has stopped? Is there a way to disconnect or stop the remote monitoring pragmatically?

According to this KB, the Websrvr.active should stop the server. It also metnoins that only the local machine can access this. I am curious though, does the computer you are accessing the web server with still show updating data even after you have called this property?  If so, if you try and refresh the page, does it still stay loaded?

  • Can not start Secure Web Server

Our Certificate expired while I was on vacation made a new key and csr and sent it off. With the new key,csr and certificate the secure side of our web will not start and just errors out.
Here is the error I get while doing custom config under the security tab
Init: Loading certificate & private key of SSL-aware server secure.lakelandptv.org:443
Here is the error I get while trying to import in general settings under the certificates tab
servermgr_info: [42] [CertificateManager importIdentity:] Error importing certificate: SecKeychainItemImport (err = -25299)
This is on an Xserver running 10.4.11
I believe I have deleted the old certificate out of key chain access but if there is more in Key chain just let me know. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you actually get that HTTP error when you try to start the mobile server. Or do you get that error when the setup executable is running ?
I feel you are mixing up things.
Tell us exactly what you tried, and the error that you got.

    Hi,
I suppose you have set the SSL port to 443 however, it looks like port 443 is
already in use by another process.

Hi, Iam getting the error unable to locate dll "The Dynamic link libraery jvm.dll could not be found in the specified path" when i tried to start the iPlanet web server. Can anybody tell me the reason?this is an urgent one.
Iam getting this error after changing the Global settings in iPlanet web server for Jre/Jdk Path.

    Hi,
Look out the below link for your problem :
    http://knowledgebase.iplanet.com/ikb/kb/articles/7671.html
As you said you are not able to start the iWS after changing the value of JRE/JDK Path. Then I think you have been use unsupported version of JDK. Kindly revert back to pervious version of JRE/JDK and start the server. To know how to revert back the pervious version of JRE/JDK check the below link.

  • How can i make sure ejb container starts before web server

When starting the application server which one starts first?
Our system requires ejb container to start first.
Currently when i test it, the web container starts before ejb sometimes.
Is there any way to force the ejb container to start up before the web container starts?

What exactly is the dependency you have in your application? The Java EE spec does not
impose any requirements on the order in which the different modules within an .ear are
    instantiated.

  • Error when starting IPlanet Web Server instance

We are currently using ServletExec 3.0c with IPlanet WebServer, but we have decided to utilise the servlet engine of IPlanet WebServer without much success. We have changed the setting in WebServer Admin to allow Servlets/JSPs to be dealt with by IPlanet, but when we attempt to start the instance we get the following error:
[https-AM]: start failed. (2: unknown early startup error)
    [https-AM]: /opt/netscape4/https-AM/start: !/bin/sh: not found
[https-AM]: warning: daemon is running as super-user
[https-AM]: conf_init: Error running init function load-modules: dlopen of /opt/netscape4/bin/https/lib/libNSServletPlugin.so failed (ld.so.1: ns-httpd: fatal: libNSServletLayer.so: open failed: No such file or directory)
    [https-AM]: server exit: status 1
The only information we found regarding this error was to add the path of libjvm.so to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH. We did this, but it didn't make any difference.
    Thanks in advance
    Vince

I got this same error and it turned out to be because one of the developers had changed the line AS_JAVA="/usr/jdk/entsys-j2se" in /opt/sun/appserver/config/asenv.conf
    to point to a 1.4.2_10 jre. (/usr/jdk/entsys-j2se was a symlink to /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_04/)
I changed it to an installation of 1.4.2_09 sdk that we had previously installed on their and everything worked fine.
I don't know whether it was because it pointed to a jre as opposed to an sdk or whether the jre was incorrectly installed. (it's a much around box, so everyone's allowed to do pretty much whatever they want to it)
    Hope this helps,
    Adam

Could you check if you have this directory? (It can be empty):
    /var/run/httpd
    permissions should be root:root, mod:755

when i start apache manually (sudo /etc/rc.d/./httpd start) i just get a fail, but when i start it through webmin i get the following:
stty: standard input: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Can someone tell me how i can fix this, or if it is too hard to fix, give me the name of the next best http server available?

i had problems with apache too, but then i just did some changes:
    in httpd.conf i changed user from nobody to httpd;
then added to system user httpd via adduser httpd in group nobody and it worked well

  • IPlanet 7.0.15 on Red Hat - Problems starting web server

I completed the installation of iPlanet 7.0.15 on Red Hat Linux 5. The Admin server starts fine, however when I attempt to start the web server I get the following error:
    Oracle iPlanet Web Server 7.0.15 B04/19/2012 21:52
catastropheinfo: CORE3282: stdout: Error occurred during initialization of VM
info: CORE3282: stdout: Unable to load native library: /opt/Apps/libjava.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
: CORE4005: Internal error: unable to create JVM
    failure: server initialization failed
I am not sure what is causing this error? I selected the default, "Install JDK that is provided with iPlanet" and it is located in directory:
    /opt/Apps/Oracle/webserver7/jdk
I am not sure why the native library in /opt/Apps/libjava.so is being referenced.
I have tried several things including installing Java in /usr/bin from a download from Oracle. It appears to work just fine.
I have installed and reinstalled - same problem.
    Any ideas?

Okay this one turned out to be fairly simple. It was a permissions issue. One of my top level directories (/opt/Apps/Oracle) did not have world execute permissions. Once I changed the directory permissions the web server came up fine. It only took me 5 days to find this and fix it.
