Starting Classic often fails

I'm trying to start Classic, but it often gets to about 90% and fails. After about 3-4 tries it finally works. I've tried turning off extensions, etc. but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Brian

So you are running OS 10.4.10 on a G4, the glitch launching Classic is intermittent, and it may or may not occur with Extensions off.
What is the version of OS 9? What does it say beneath the appropriate icon in System Preferences > Startup Disk?
Can you successfully boot into OS 9? Always, never or intermittently?
We can't know what you mean by "etc". Have you used System Preferences > Classic > 'Advanced' to rebuild the Classic Desktop? Have you used Disk Utility to "Fix OS 9 Permissions" (in the File menu)?
You can try setting aside (say to your Desktop) four items in the System 9 folder: "Classic", Classic Support", Classic Support UI" and "System Resources". They will be re-created when you next try to launch Classic.

  • Error Messages when Starting Classic

When I start Classic on my MDD and G4 AGP computers running 10.4.5, I get a message several times stating "Connection Failed -This server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name ..., etc.” that I have to click away before loading finishes. I can’t find a setting anywhere that causes it and I don’t have anything in the Start Objects or Server folders. Any ideas what could be causing it? When I boot directly into the same 9.2.2, I don't get the messages. They is not a big problem but rather annoying and I would like to get rid of them.
    Thanks in advance.
    Gary

Hi, Gerald. Inside the OS 9 System Folder that you use for Classic operation, you will find a Startup Items folder. (This is different from the StartupItems folder that controls what, if anything, opens immediately after you start the computer up in OS X.) Check that folder for anything that tries to connect to the internet when you double-click it. If you find such an item, you may want to remove it from the Startup Items folder.

  • 10.4.6 to Classic: "Connection Failed" Message

Hi. Hope this is the right forum. It think so, as follows:
I have one Classic app on my computer that I must use for work, two or three times each month (its a great time billing program). Since going to 10.4.6 (Combo update) a few weeks ago, whenever I launch the application (from the dock) and Clasic starts up, I get a message: "Connection failed. The file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally." I hit OK, and then OK again, and the Classic up comes right on up. never got this before 10.4.6.
I have a two Mac network (Airport). The other computer can access the Classic app, and does not get this message. I am admin on my computer. I have ownership permissions on the Classic app and all the data files, with the other computer having read-write permissions on the data.
I've checked System Prefs (Network and Classic) and see nothing out of the ordinary.
This is more of an annoyance than anything else, but can someone tell me why an app on my hard disk is trying to connect to server, and what I can do to fix it?
    Thanks!

I presume this means that if you launch the application directly by double-clicking its icon, you do not have this problem?
No - I haven't double clicked the icon from the hard disk while in OS X(I always open from the dock) - I'll try that 1st thing in the AM when I get back to work and see what happens. My point was that I was launching Classic mode from OS X and not booting into Classic. But - I did select OS 9 as my starup a while earlier today and launced the app in true Classic by double clicking the icon and I got the same message.
So, I think it has something to do with Network.
    1. I'd try removing and replacing the app's icon in the Dock.
    I'll try this too!
    2. Is the other computer also accessing the application when this occurs?
No - we never do that.

    • "Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3: Your Own Computer Appears in List of Available Servers." Perhaps may not apply, but it's the only reference to the exact message you cited I've found. The "solution" therein gave me the idea re: the Dock icon.
    • "Mac OS X 10.4: Classic - 'Connection failed, the server may not exist or is not operational at this time" alert." Not an exact match, but may give you some more insights.
Yes - I saw those and they were informative but not helpful.
    4. Was the Mac OS 9 System folder on the affected Mac copied over from the other Mac, e.g. via Migration Assistant?
No. Both are original Apple insalled.
    5. Were the Dock settings, including the app in question, copied over from the other Mac, again via Migration Assistant?
    Likewise, no.
Thanks, Dr. Smoke, as always, for your insights!

  • Boot camp often fails to boot - fix?

Boot Camp often fails to boot at all, leaving the iMac dead at the bootloader screen. Have to force shutdown by holding down power button. Full hardware test declared the hardware 100% functional. Disk Utility and chkdsk sees nothing but fire. This is intermitent/random and it proved impossible to "force" it's occurance. It happen when it darn well please?
First occurance goes back to late July 2011, a few days after a major thunder storm that caused pulsing power blackouts (as in, very short bursts - like turning off the power then immediately flipping it back on - too quick to actually shut the computer down). Surely, this must be the source of the issue? Right? Alas it doesn't adds up. Power supply of this house is very stable and reliable. Power fluctuations are unhearded of. It's also connected to a surge protected outlet. The system itself, in Mac or Win, is flat out stable. It does not freeze out of the blue like what a damaged power supply would cause. It only ever freeze upon choosing a partition via the boot camp interface.
Further observation as compared to normal boot procedure: Upon selection of the Windows partition, the LED on the USB mouse turns off then back on again a short moment later. Windows loads up normally. When the crash occurs, the LED never turn back on. It's just dead right there and then.
What's going on and what can I do to fix this? It feels like some hardware initialisation fails for some reasons. It's ough to be around the USB systems itself but what do I know anyway?
P.S.: Please, don't mention the dreaded format and re-install. It's a 20 hours job. I'm not going there. ty

Why not upgrade the surge protector to a UPS? good units are very affordable.
Put all your sensitive equipment like modem/router, computer, electronics running off UPS.

Well, sometimes if you don't have backups, and refuse to do what you may need to....
There are troubleshoolting tips and faqs I'm sure on the 'net.
Starting with Windows 7 DVD for one
Even OS X won't survive with forced (hard) shutdowns.
If it only happens in Windows, and you were running OS X when the outage occurred...
USB devices and cables can be hard to ID but swapping cables and stuff helps.
As for Disk Utility, it does not look at drive sectors or files for issues.
If you really want to scan a hard drive, use the vendor's own Linux or Windows utiilty to recertify the sectors.
If you haven't done any deep cleaning of files, registry, even uninstall and reinstall components.
I just did a reinstall. Partially to be a test run for when I have to install Windows 8 next week, also to clear up a problem I had, possibly a rogue web site using a rootkit to hide files and icons and programs disappeared and icons became generic. So yes I don't take it lightly, but the new install runs much much better (over two years since last install).
AHT is not a 100% reliable at finding everything, only what it actually is designed or suppose to look for.
A semi-loose DIMM or faulty can be enough, and not likely AHT or Memtest will find it, but Windows does tend to spot a problem with RAM during installs.
    CCleaner 3.x
    Driver Sweeper 3.x
START: run %TEMP% - Select All and send to Recycle
Lion Recovery - show all hidden partitions and check health of all, hidden debug menu in Disk Utility can be enabled in command line
Some partitions (GPT, EFI, System, Volume Information Block) are only tested during format where each sector does get a thorough check for errors because they can't be mapped out later. When you do chkdsk etc you only test user partition areas and not the 'entire' drive, unless doing a full initialization. And GPT requires that the VIB and also the backup VIB both be error free - in the past the backup VIB if it failed was "optional" though, it is not now.
If you clone OS X then it is easy to move it to another drive and also to do full initialization and restore. If 3 days of your time isn't an option maybe time to invest in program(s) and methods that can backup and restore.
Trying to find the needle in haystack that you have limped along with I guess since July (since installing Lion? maybe ?) can take 3 days probably, unless you are lucky enough to replace a mouse or cable on first step and it all goes away (hit the lottery or get hit by lightning odds)

  • Start up script fails; Unable to boot...Please, Help.

This is my first major problem that I have had with this computer. It has been running fine until this past Sunday night. I was running AOL, Firefox & iTunes. The computer was running slow and iTunes was skipping frequently. I rebooted and resumed my activities only to have the same problems and the computer booted slower than usual. I closed all my applications and rebooted once again. Then, I ran Disk Utility had used Verify Disk. It found an error on my system volume stating an incorrect block count in one sector and referenced a file cache_003, all other volumes passed. Disk Utility was unable to repair the volume. Repair Disk ran slow. I did a search for the file cache_003 and discovered that it was part of a Netscape profile back up on a different partition. I deleted the profile and used Disk Utility again. This time, the system volume passed and a different volume failed due to incorrect block size, Repair Disk failed. The next time I tried to boot the computer the gray screen with apple and loading indicator came up and stayed for several minutes followed by a blue screen with loading indicator for several minutes and stayed blue for nearly 40 minutes. Eventually, the screen went black and displayed that the start up script failed. Here is some of what was displayed.
    Darwin/BSD(Computer Name-Computer.local)(console)
    System Starter[35]
login date&time Internet Sharing[96]:Libinfo[Socket_open():2318]connect():2318]connect:()connection refused (This line repeated continuously)
I am able to input commands at this stage but I am not knowledgeable enough to know what to do.
When I push the power button to turn it off the computer beeps once and the led light flashes three times and turns off.
Each time when I attempt to boot either into Safe Mode or from the Software Install DVD I encounter the same problem.
Now, Monday night by chance on another boot attempt the computer started up although it took about 20-30 minutes. It was missing one volume which showed up in Disk Utility under a different name. While I had the computer up I backed up what I could on the volumes that mounted. One file I was unable to burn using Toast 9 due to a data fork error. The computer eventually froze during my activities and since I have had no luck at my start up attempts and have had the same problem. Luckily, I was able to back up everything I needed with the exception of what was on the AWOL volume.
The last thing I had installed recently was the latest Security Update which went fine and was two days before the trouble started.
I am at a loss for what to do next. I would like to retrieve the files on that one volume but at this point if I can start up I would just like to reformat and install the OS.
Any help with this problem would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Well, originally when I ran Disk Utility, although it performed slower than usaual it found the error as previously mentioned and was unable to Repair Volume. As to using the Hardware Disc & Install Discs(original & Tiger) the computer failed to boot although you could hear the disc spinnning for awhile. In both and every instance regardless of any or no disc, the computer starts the boot process and you see the gray screen with white apple and loading indicator for about 3 minutes then it switches to the blue screen with loading indicator. After quite some time the loading indicator goes away and it's just a blue screen for nearly a half-hour followed by a black screen which starts the above prompt. I can post all of what that said later as I have written all of it down at home, a portion of it is in my original post. The start up chime doesn't sound at all. I do get a tone and flashing LED lights when I hold the power button down to turn it off after the above described boot process. There is not much I can do except try and try again. I may need to get a new hard drive but I would like to resolve it without doing so if possible. When trying to boot from both discs I was holding down the C key as directed and I have tried just letting the computer boot with disc in drive without any key interaction.

lightroom 5 on a Mac os 10.8.5 will not start. It fails to open. And it worked fine the other day.

Reh... Doesn't work on my 2012 Mac mini. A function key set in Sys Prefs worked in Leopard and Lion on my MB but I cannot get any key to work using SysPref Dictation & Speech. It is befuddling and now I have to go to Edit-Speech to turn on and turn off speech to selected text.
I have used Macs and Apple 2es since cave man days and Apple is becoming so befuddling I am wondering if there is even an advantage to it over Windows XP. I spent a lot on this little box, it looks good (the first one had to be exchanged as it wouldn't link to my keyboard ???) but Apple intuitive does no longer seem meaningful.
If speech to text no longer is accessible by short cuts using Fkeys, why bother to have it in Syst Prefs?
Apple is losing its way. The pleasure is gone and no one at Apple seems to care.

NewAgeHippie2200: Try the suggestions in this article; part of the article explains the correct way to repair your permissions in 10.15.
Templeton Peck: NewAgeHippie2200 is using Mac OS X 10.1x, and the version of the Disk Utility included with 10.1 cannot be used to repair permissions; this functionality was added in 10.2. A separate Repair Permissions utility is needed in Mac OS X 10.15, and earlier versions of Mac OS X don't have any mechanism to do this.

Has your phone ever been hacked or jailbroken. This error message is what usually shows up for that. Are you using a supported carrier for the iPhone, or did someone hack the phone to unlock it to be used on another carrier. If that is the case, then there is no help you can get here as discussing hacked/jailbroken devices is not allowed.

  • Cannot start Classic mode after 10.3.9 update

    Hi!
I recently used the "Software Update" tool to update my 10.3 OS version to 10.3.9. After doing this, I found that I could no longer start Classic mode while in OSX. I did a clean install and can boot using OS 9.2.2, no problems. But I still cannot launch Classic while in OSX.
The exact error message is: "There is a problem with updating the Classic-specific files. Classic was unable to update its file in "System Folder" on "Macintosh HD".

    Hi, Joe -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Try removing the 'old' Classic-specific files from the OS 9 System Folder (you can do this while booted to either OS, although I suggest doing it while booted to OS 9).
These files include - Classic, Classic Support, and Classic Support UI (all usually located loose in the System Folder); Classic RAVE (in Extensions folder); and ProxyApp (someplace - location seems to vary).
Put those in the Trash and empty it, then restart into OSX and try designating the OS 9 System Folder as Classic via the Classic pane in OSX's System Preferences (in Apple menu).
