  • G5 iMac won't start! Help needed.

Got a new intel iMac. Gave my husband my old G5 iMac (not intel). It was working perfectly. For some reason unknown to me, he decided he was going to reinstall everything from scratch so he grabbed the first disk he saw and put it in the computer. It was the startup disk for an intel computer & NOT for the iMac G5.
Did he fry the computer? It won't start up. Keypad & mouse won't respond.
The screen can't find the driver (no surprise) and says "panic: we are hanging here...." I can't get the disk out of the drive. Service contract is up. Is there a way I can connect my laptop to it and get it to respond & spit out that intel disk? Perhaps if I open the cover up, I can into the CD drive and get the disk out. All ideas appreciated.

    Hi Mel Kev
Have you tried holding down the left mouse button when you turn the computer on. Holding down the left mouse button should force eject the disk.
    Hope this helps

And it WORKED! (I really wasn't in the mood to do surgery on the computer this evening). Thanks all!!! You are awesome!
Now, if I can just find the original installation disks.... They are in this drawer somewhere....

  • Word (Office 2001) gives Type 2 error at start-up - help needed

Good day - I'm puzzled by a problem I'm unable to resolve. First, Word (part of the Office 2001 suite) suddenly lost it's pull-down menus, including the About tab, and then, upon relaunch, gave me a Type 2 error and refused to start. It first shows the Start-up 'Gallery' scene, and when you try to open an existing document or a new Word document, it then briefly shows the Word template and then crashes with a Type 2 error (I've run this program for years without any major issues). When I couldn't get this resolved after re-starting with a desktop rebuild, I checked the other applications - Entourage, PowerPoint, and Excel, and they all work fine. I trashed the Microsoft prefs - still no change. I removed the fonts - no change. I reloaded the MS Word portion of the Suite - no change. I zapped the PRAM, tested all the system extensions, even replaced the Internet Prefs - no joy. I even went so far as to do a Clean Install of new System software from my software install disk. Other than this, I haven't loaded any new software or done anything that I can think would cause this, and the odd thing is that the program installed on the hard disk WILL RUN when I boot from a restore or Norton system CD! Yet, when I reboot into my system on the hard drive, I'm back to the error message. With brand new system software the application will crash as before. Short of completing re-installing the Office 2001 suite (which I don't want to do, as I will likely lose all my email and address book and calendar) or re-initializing the hard drive and completely starting over, losing everything, I'm at a loss. I have run Norton (de-fragged the HD, ran anti-virus, etc.), checked my hardware with the hardware test disk, used Disk First Aid, all to no avail - no problems with memory, hardware or software indicated. The only thing I haven't done is update drivers, primarily because I have a newer (3.2.8) disk driver on the system than the Driver Utility has, and I don't want to replace it with 3.2.7. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this, or have any ideas before I'm forced to take this to a Mac repair facility? Thanks in advance...

Greetings to all - Thank you for your replies and help. I did this in reverse order to the posts. Trashing the ASLM, Finder, Mac OS and System Prefs provided the same result - Type 2 error at Word start-up. I had tested extensions using the extensions manager in sets of 5 with no change previously; I restarted with all extensions off (shift key at start-up) and got the same Type 2 error when launching MS Word.
Further info: I've tried this with VM at 1M + installed memory and with VW at double installed memory and it made no difference (I've always used VM in substantial blocks, even with VPC, which I use daily). I've removed ATM 4.6 as a precaution. I've also tried to remove everything that interfaces with MS Word - PrinToPDF comes to mind, as well as all non-original fonts.
I'm puzzled by one thing, which may be nothing but a curiosity, and it may have to do with the way I'm installing MS Word in an attempt to overcome this issue. As you know, Office 2001 provides you with a number which you need to retain upon installation. My original number, then, becomes superceded with each install; in other words, the last 4 numbers changes, out of the original 54092-XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXX number provided. A number shows up on the initial lauch window; the problem I detect is that this number isn't the number given at the last install, but the ORIGINAL number I was given when the program was originally installed. This 'suggests' that perhaps the problem is with MS Word itself, as you'd think the program at lauch would recognize the new ID number given when the program files are re-installed using custom install. As an aside, I originally tried to do a 'drag and drop install of the Office 2001 folder, as suggested on the install disk; the system read the item numbers and gave me a 'preparing to copy' message and a spinning beach ball for 20 minutes before I was more or less forced to restart the computer with the reset button. I'm unsure this makes any difference, given that the program will launch with a boot disk, and all of the other modules will launch as they always have.
I'm appreciative of your help and comments. I didn't realize that this forum existed before, having been using a local MUG forum exclusively, and I suspect I'll use it a lot in the coming months as I coax an aging machine to continue working. This may be the first time in 20 years of Mac ownership that a technician might be called for, but I'm hoping for an easier solution.

  • Power Mac G4 Start Up Help Needed

    Hello All-
Our good old G4 Quicksilver is having some start up issues.  Although we have multiple newer Macs for daily use, this tower still houses some older photos/music and is a great computer that we hope to keep running.  It has a new hard drive and has been running well until yesterday.
On power up, two different things have been noted:  sometimes a loud audible siren, followed by flashing power button, then black screen, then gray screen followed by the usual pleasant audible tone, then flashing file with face and question mark.  Or, other times, boot up sounds normal after power on (ie, single pleasant tone), but still the gray screen with face/question mark folder.
After searching the support site, I've tried a few things as follows but to no avail:
    1.  unlplugged all USB peripherals (ie, speakers), and only left the apple keyboard/mouse - tried startup with no different results
    2.  tried to boot into Safe Mode unsuccessfully using Apple techinical procedure
    3.  booted from original Mac OS X Install Disc (10.1), and successfully accessed/run Disk Utility --> First Aid --> able to see and select the existing HD --> Verified the HD (did not have option to run disc Repair, as no listing of problems appeared, just "HD verified").  No changes, though, after trying to restart after this.
What should I do next?  I have my original Apple store purchased OS X Tiger CDs if I need to eventually do an archive and reinstall.  It seems like the computer just needs to be re-told which OS (9 vs. 10) to boot from.
Thanks for any concise help that can be offered!
    Mark

Niel - I just tried Restart with Option key held down to no avail.  Gray screen with blinking question mark folder.
When I did this maneuver, the install disc was still in the drive.  I tried to eject it the way I got it in there in the first place: Control--Option--O--F at start up accessing Open Firmware and "eject cd" command (all which I had to do to remove a music CD to insert the OS X install CD earlier), but now I cannot seem to access Open Firmware - just the gray screen with question folder.
After either your suggested step or my attempt to go to OF, if I leave the gray screen with folder alone, that icon will change to the old Mac SE icon followed by an automatic boot to the Installer disc start screen.
    What do you think?

  • IMac G5 17" - Won't Start? (HELP NEEDED SOON!)

EDIT 4: (Yes, I'm that impatient. Sorry.) The thing below worked ONCE, but it hasn't loaded since. And we still can not get the Startup Disk to load. (As a side Q, why is it that Safe Mode is the only thing that loads anyway?)
EDIT 3: We tried pressing the Command, Option, P, and R keys. That got the tone to sound! HALLELUJAH! But now it's whining again, is that supposed to happen? And will it take all night? (Most of all, will it overheat?)
EDIT 2: We also tried using Safe Mode. (Once.) It actually made our computer do something - but that something was overheating. (Loud, whirring noise, like it is having a heart attack, like it is going into outer space, pick a description. )
EDIT: I checked Apple's article on this. The one that says to start up from the disc. It didn't even load, so please do not say to do that.
We have had our old iMac G5 for about 5 years now (as soon as 2010 comes, anyway).
Recently we had a problem where it suddenly locked up.
Now, even after removing all non Apple hardware, unplugging it, taking it apart and checking the connections, and cleaning it from the dirt inside, it only loads the Apple logo with the grey start up screen and the spinning icon. After that, it just stops and won't do anything else.
We also tried booting up from the Startup disk, but it simply ejects it. (Which is surprising, since it won't do anything else.)
Can someone please tell me how to fix this, or is it finally dead for good?
BTW, we have bought a new Mac, but we still had all of our old pics and such on the old computer, so it is really quite valuable to us.
So if it isn't savable, is it possible to take those photos of the HD and somehow back them up? (Stupid question, I know.)
    Thanks,
    SSD~

If you could get the old Mac to start in FireWire Target Disk Mode
it may be seen by a healthy Mac (via proper FW cable between
them) as an external hard disk drive. In this way, files or items
saved on the old computer's drive may be accessible and could
be archived by the second, healthy computer on CD-R or DVD.
The old computer's hard disk drive need not be able to start up
that computer beyond the instructions in FW TDM to see content.
"How to use FireWire Target Disk Mode"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
There are circumstances in which a healthy computer
could also be utilized to check or attempt a repair on
a failed one, using the FW Target Disk Mode and the
healthy computer's Disk Utility's 'repair disk' from the
version in the healthy computer's utility folder.
Sometimes a failed hard disk drive may make odd noise, or
some other issue in the computer due to component failure
may cause problems. A failing logic board may mimic other
kinds of issues, depending on where the fault occurred.
{Also, an external enclosure could be bought and the drive
from the iMac G5 put inside, then this drive could be looked
into by the healthy computer; using disk utilities to see if it
could be accessed and some content saved elsewhere.
Be sure if you buy an external hard disk drive enclosure
    that it will work with the hard disk drive type from the G5.}
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Hi,
Any application that needs webkit won't start anymore. The problem is (appears to be) in one specific folder: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework
All reports point to that folder, i restored it from a time machine backup but the apps still wont start. Is there a way to reinstall webkit?
    Applications include:
    - Safari, Mail, App Store, Adium, Dashboard, Messages, Notes, Reminders, Spotlight in the menubar, iTunes....... pretty much every application i need to make my Mac usable.
    All error logs show this:

Any suggestions on how to fix the webkit problem?
    Thanks,

First, I'd check in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs. If it does it could be a startup item or plug-in that's interfering. If not, try re-installing Safari.
Not sure it will touch WebKit though, you you may need to boot to your Recovery Volume and re-install the OS. Not too bad because it's an install in place and shouldn't touch any data, files or settings.

I'm new: Just starting: Did tutorials: Need extra help: Thanks
I watched all the video tutorials, but I'm not clear on these parts.
    1. How to do a fade in / fade out title intro over the moving scene of the video?
    2. How to adjust the color to saturate / brighten / darken video scenes?
    3. How to make a credits page at end of video?
    4. Also, confused because I have only 2 image / audio clips for my very short video. The first video clip has the audio track with one sound graph displayed when enlarged. The second video clip has audio with 2 sound graph images stacked on top of each other saying R and L, right and left. The first audio clip does not have this, does not look like this. This is confusing. I thought both audio clips should look the same. What's up with this? Do I have something duplicated?
    5. Is there anyone here from South Orange County, California, USA, who would like to be of help to me via email, phone, Skype?

  • Help Needed for T42 Start-up Problem

    Urgent help need!!!
I have a ThinkPad T42 with Windows XP installed.  It works perfectly for a while without ever have any problem or error message.  Then suddenly it won’t work anymore.  The symptom is following:
After power on the laptop the Microsoft window would show up and it prompt me for window logon password.  After I type in the password it then shows “window is loading your personal setting”.  After a long while nothing would show up on the screen other than the background of the normal screen.  There is no window bar at the bottom or any icon on the screen.  If I start in safe mode then everything would show up.  I don’t know what is going on.
This happened two months ago and I ended up restoring a backup image to get it work again.  It happens again today with the same symptom.  I am really tired of having to restore image backup every 2 months.
I would really appreciate it if any of your experts can offer me some insight into this problem.  I am desperate in need of help.
    Thanks very much!

I tried to update to IPad 5.1, but when it finished and tried to restore the backup, it shows me that Itunes could not back up because a session could not be started with iPad. need your help please

This has happened to me a couple of times and what I do is quit iTunes and restart my Mac and then try again and then it will work.
If iTunes has already created the backup, you should still be able to restore from the backup when you are connected to iTunes. Right click on the iPad name on the left side of iTunes and select restore from backup. After the process completes, sync with iTunes to transfer all of your apps, music, photos and other media back onto the iPad.

    Hi,
I have the old MacBook Pro. Upgraded to Mountain Lion which completely wrecked the system. So downgraded to Snow Leopard.
Then updated the combo update. Now stuck on blue screen at start-up.
Need help. Greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

I have a OS X 10.6.8 Mini Mac - I cannot empty my trash so went to Disk Repair and had a message that my start up disc need repairing - do not know how to do this - also I have a message saying my Start Up disc has no more Memory Spave available for application memory. 2. Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:

By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

    3. Lack of free space on your hard drive: if this drops below about 15GB you can run into problems like data corruption and general slowness.
How big is your hard drive, and how much free space do you actually have?

I had a look at the link earlier, it talks about Log off link which is maintained in the technical profile.
I am interested in the logon URL.
Do you know where it is maintained?
I checked in sicf -> defaulthost->sap>....crm_logon ..It was pointing to crm_ui_start.
Is there any other place you need to maintain the login URL?
