Starting digital edition 2.1

Hi,
I've a problem.
After installation successfully the program doesn't start.
I get the error-message:
"loking for online - help" or "close starting"
What must I do, to open it successfully?
Thx to the comm. for helping me.

One possible reason for the problem is that ADE2 versions are a load of untested rubbish.
Try using v1.7.2 instead and see if it helps.
~~~~~~~~~
There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0 (and 2.0.1).  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.
Some people have found ADE trying to upgrade automatically.
It appears (not 100% sure) that if you install ADE2.0 as a new install (not as an upgrade) that your 1.7.2 will continue to run.
Probably best to say no if 2.0.x installation asks if you want to migrate your library.
  • Digital Editions scanning ebooks nothing to do with it
    I use Digital Editions to copy borrowed library books to my eBook reader (Cybook Opus, but I don't think that is relevant).
    There are also many other books on the device, which have nothing to do with Digital Editions.
    When I start Digital Editions and connect the device, it spends ages looking around books stored on the device
    outside the Digital Editions directory, and making lots of annotation files which have no value to me at all.
    Meanwhile, it refuses to get on with its job of copying my library books to the device.
    Is there any way of preventing this antisocial behaviour by Digital Editions?
    Let's start with your understanding of what ADE is supposed to do.
    ADE does several things, and a description of what it does is included in
    the HELP section.  It will interface with sources for ebooks, interact with
    certain ereaders listed in its list of supported devices
    (HERE<http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/supported-devices>),
    and your Cyborg ereader is not on the list.
    I am somewhat confused by your statements concerning ADE's management of
    ebooks on your "device".  ADE runs on your computer, not your ereader, so I
    don't know how it would be interacting with the ebooks on your device.
    Since the Cyborg is not a supported ereader, is some software loaded on
    that device labelled 'Digital Editions'?  If so, it is not from Adobe.  I
    have seen some postings that tell us Digital Editions is stored on their
    ereader, but that is false.
    Library ebooks have digital rights assigned to them by the publisher,
    distributor, library or author.  ADE (on your computer) checks the settings
    to confirm that the permissions will allow an ebook to be copied to an
    ereader.  If the permissions will not allow that to happen, the ebook can't
    be copied, and that sounds like what may be happening to you.
    All in all, ADE is really not guilty of 'antisocial behavior'.  It's a case
    of unwinding what's going on and trying to figure out what to do about it.
    Hope this helps!
  • Sorry, the file you are attempting to open cannot be opened by Digital Editions.
    I PURCHASED SEVERAL BOOKS FROM GOOGLE PLAY STORE AND FOLLOWED THE
    INSTRUCTIONS TO DOWNLOAD THEM SO I COULD READ THEM ON MY NOOK COLOR BUT THE
    RESULTING FILES SEEM NOT TO BE RECOGNIZED BY ADOBE DIGITAL EDITIONS VER.
    1.7.2 AND EACH ATTEMPT RESULTS IN THE MESSAGE: Sorry, the file you are
    attempting to open cannot be opened by Digital Editions.
    THE FILE NAMES FOR THE BOOKS ARE ATTACHED. I FOUND IT STRANGE THAT ALTHOUGH
    "private 1 suspect-epub.acsm"  does not cause this error but the others do.
    I purchased "private 1 suspect-epub.acsm" from Google Market (now PLAYSTORE)
    a few weeks earlier. What could be the cause of the problem?
    Any suggestions?
    Ben Olsen
    Ben, I'm not sure what is going on here.  So let me write something about
    the process generally, and maybe it will help you to determine why this is
    happening.
    Generically: the download process usually begins with the source.  That
    source would interact with you and then provide an .ascm pointer
    file.  After the pointer file is generated, the source should start Digital
    Editions on your computer, and Digital Editions will read the pointer file,
    find the ebook and download it - all automagically.
    Part of the download process can include choosing the format for the
    ebook.  Digital Editions is limited to certain formats.  They include
    .epub, .txt and .pdf file types. The most common format is .epub.  So, when
    you interacted with Google books, you probably got the chance to choose the
    type of file you wanted.  If you chose a format OTHER than .epub, .txt or
    .pdf, Digital Editions can't do anything with it, and thus the message.
  • Digital Editions crashing on startup on a mac.
    Macintosh core Duo, OS 10.4.10, Digital Editions verson 1.0.464
    Adobe Digital Editions crashes on startup (at the Initializing stage). I have to Force Quit, then restart the program and it does open up.
    DE is way too slow for me. I've preserved Adobe Reader 7 on my machine. Why can't I open up any of my ebooks with it like I used to? Everything opens fine in Digital Editions, but won't open in the older software. Must I purge my computer of Adobe Reader 8 and Digital Editions to get back my previous functionality.
    Yes. To re-state: Starting up from a shut-down computer, I would attempt to start Digital Editions, the window would open, then hang at "Initializing" forever. Spinning beach ball. When I would open the Force Quit window, the Digital Editions title would appear in Red, indicating the program is "not responding". After a Force Quit, I would open Digital Editions again. It then started perfectly. Closing the program and restarting it would also work well.
    Over the last couple of hours I deleted my entire library folder called "Digital Editions" and re-downloaded all 20+ ebooks from the provider. Now, Digital Editions starts up after a computer restart correctly. Everything appears to be functioning well. So I gather there was some corruption of my library that caused the program to hang.
    My dissatisfaction with the "slowness" is in regard to the scrolling speed on a single page when it is fit to width, the limitation to have to drag the scroll bar to scroll down, and the inability to zoom quickly with a zoom button or a "87%", "230%" etc. toolbar section.
    Reader was just much faster for me to use. I like to zoom in and out quickly, and scroll very quickly through a book to find what I need.
    Thanks for your quick reply above. This is good sign.
  • Digital editions 2.0 always crashes after start.
    after download and installation on a windows xp machine, i recieve the following error message when clicking anwhere on the main window.
    "Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience." i have restarted the computer and opened the program to the same results.
    ADE2.0 is not supported at all on XP pre SP3, and unreliable on XP SP3.
    Try using v1.7.2 instead.
  • Start from Home - Adobe Digital Editions
    It's really nice to have a forum, now dedicated to EPUB in InDesign. My first discussion we raise here is an explanatory report on Digital Editions.
    So here's my first question?
    The digital edition can be considered the simplest platform lietura and thus use it to base it on the performance of a simple epub?
    The adobe digital edition supports Epub book Flow 2.0 and 3.0?
    Adobe Digital Editions does not support EPUB 3 completely. There are known issues with groups not showing up properly, video not showing up, issues with image exported with "Use Original Image" option checked and so on.
    As Steve suggested, the best solution is to use Readium on Chrome or iBooks.
  • Installing Adobe Digital Editions
    Hi, I want to be able to download e-books through e-pub from the library and Adobe Digital Editions is needed to do this.  I've downloaded what I thought was ADE but what I get is what appears to be the book, "Getting Started with Adobe Digital Editions."  I want the software.  How do I get it? Am I mission something?  I've checked the Adobe website and library's too but there aren't any other choices for ADE software.  I have Windows Vista by the way. Help!
    For Mac: http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/digitaleditions/ADE_3.0_Installer.dmg
    For WIn: http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/digitaleditions/ADE_3.0_Installer.exe
    Copy paste the URL and check whether you are able to download ADE.
  • InDesign CS5.5 EPUB export not showing cover image in Adobe Digital Editions
    I have a document that I am trying to ensure is reflecting the cover image prior to uploading to several EPUB sites like google and Barnes and Noble. I am using Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Firefox (EPUBReader) to do the troubleshooting on the document. Calibre shows the cover image Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) does not. Are their any known problems with ADE not reflecting the cover image that I need to be aware of before I continue working on this?
    The ADE help says the following:
    "Once the items are in your library, there are two ways to view the content of any bookshelf. You can view thumbnails of your items. The thumbnail is the cover page of the item (or just the first page if it doesn't have a cover page). In this view, you see the set of thumbnails and some information about each item (author, title). You can also sort the order in which the items are shown by author, title, date created, number of pages, and so forth."
    Here is basic informaiton. I have a cover page in my export to EPUB but ADE will only show the first page. Again Calibre shows the cover page.
    CS 5.5
    The project is a book (indb) composed of multiple documents (indd)
    Exporting as book as an EPUB
    On general tab I am "Use existing image"
    I am rasterizing the first image in Indesign via the "Object - Object export options" but I am not selecting that option when on the general tab of the Export to EPUB options. I am chosing a file from my disk. I thought that maybe the file name was too long but I changed the image to "cover.jpg" and reexported it but it still does not work.
    Here are the contents of the content.opf file with all the pointers. I have updated the file as I believe you can tell with guides, creation date, etc....
    It passes the SIGIL check.
    The image name is Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg. It is 300 dpi and 1650 x 2550. I could also cut in the one that I did for cover.jpg but it only replaces the file name.
    I have also been trying to get this cover image to display on PC for NOOK but it appears that everyone is having hits problem too. I have followed some trouble shooting guides and renamed the jpg image, Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg to cover.jpg but that doesn't seem to work either for NOOK.
    Any help you can give would be appreciated. I am new to InDesign (I know you probably hate hearing that, but I have gotten so close to being done overcoming all the new user hurdles). I think this is my last one before uploading to the appropriate sites - PS. I got the cover page to show up on the Kindle but not Adobe's own product.
    Thanks
    ebookjunkie, I have just used InDesign to publish two very short "books" (.99 cent variety) and started this thread with the first question. Look to Bob for the expert advice. This is neophyte advice from someone moving from publishing a full book using Word to EPUB/Kindle and now using InDesign to publish to EPUB/Kindle.
    First ADE is useless. I say this out of frustration of trying to use it to troubleshoot problems and it has so many problems in displaying an EPUB that you spend a lot of time troubleshooting ADE issues rather than EPUB problems. The problems are not limited to but won't display a cover page properly, text wrapping is iffy, Drop caps a problem, bringing over supported items like drop caps, all small caps, etc.... are also issues as best I can tell. Humble opinion is delete off your desktop. I use the following to troubleshoot my EPUB's/Kindle books on my Windows platform; Calibre, Barnes and Noble's Nook for PC and iPhone iTunes for EPUB (Sigil to look for errors); and for Kindle, Kindle previewer and Kindle for the PC. Even after doing this, I just today saw my book a buyer's Android "Reader" and the pictures did not display at all. So it is publish once and test everywhere! Unfortunately, you just can't test all the possible devices and iterations of readers. (I am from IBM and we couldn't do it, so how publishers are supposed to figure it out is beyond me!)
    On the absolutely great news end, you will see a lot of problems about placing images on the iPad with a lot of workarounds. They apparently (Apple) have fixed this as my two publications show images nicely now on both the iPhone and iPad with the iTunes bookshelf/reader. They were "microdots" when viewed previously. I did nothing to fix it and was just not going to publish to the iPAd and just tested them a few weeks ago and they display perfectly. So Apple has fixed the problem. If it looks good on the Nook for PC, it should look good on the iPAD/iPhone now as best I can tell.
    Cheers
  • Digital editions library of books has disappeared?
    I have purchased a number of digital editions over the last year. Last week I opened up my library to find the entire contents had disappeared. I have no idea why it's gone but I would like my books back. I can see them on my computer under My Documents but as soon as I click on the icon it requires me to activate in Adobe Digital Editions and I can't do this. Any ideas on how I can get my books back?
    Thanks Lucy Curtis
    Lucy,
    The "Contact Support" link on the DE support page will take you to the main support page
    at http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/
    Once there their is another link called "Ask a new question" which after you sign on with your AdobeID on the right will start up a a new support request.
    On this page you will need click on the "Additional products" radio button, and then select "Digital Editions" from the drop down list and then click continue, which will take you to another page so that you can enter in details about your problem
    After you are done, click on "Review case & submit".
    You will want to return occasionally to the Support portal to review the status of your case.
  • Adobe Digital Editions Quit Unexpectedly
    Hi there,
    I can't open my book from Abode Digital Editions. When I go to Adobe Digital Additions Library and click on the book I purchased, a box pops up saying, "Adobe Digital Editions quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. This report will be sent to Apple automatically." Then when I click on the "Reopen" button, I am automatically taken back to the Adobe Digital Editions Library where the cycle repeats itself. I have seen multiple reports of this same issue from other users in this form. I have called Adobe for support and can't seem to find an answer so far. I would LOVE to have this sorted out so I can use my Kobo and read the books I have purchased. Anyone out there in internet land who can help me, I would appreciate this sooooooo much.
    Thank you!
    Same problem here.  I downloaded and installed ADE 4.0.3 just to check out a library e-book using DRM on my Mac OS X Yosemite.  ADE crashed every time I attempted to open that book with a memory address exception.  I had no problems opening the default book that comes with the reader though.  Looked at iTunes reviews of ADE and Mac users have been complaining about this serious bug since February!  What a major fail by Adobe.
    I took the suggestion in this thread of downgrading to ADE 3.0.  I still had the library's e-book in my library but was now getting a E_ACT_NOT_READY error each time I tried to open it.  After some googling, I figured out I needed to reset my authorization token by doing Command-Shift-D.  But after regenerating my authorization token, I got a E_LIC_ALREADY_FULFILLED_BY_ANOTHER_USER error.  Now I think I need to get the library to reset the authorization token for the book since my token has changed.  I dropped them a note informing them Adobe Digital Editions 4.0.3 doesn't work on Yosemite and asked them to reset the authorization.  I've removed the book from my ADE library and will hopefully be able to download and start reading it next week.
  • How do I get my ereader to appear on the left hand side of Digital Editions?
    I have a Kobo Vox ereader and it works well.  It connects to my computer and appears  when I look at My Computer.  It doesn not appear on the left hand side of Digital Editions under Devices (devices does not appear either) when ADE is started.  The book I downloaded appears in ADE and is readable in ADE.  How do I get the Kobo to appear within ADE so I can transfer the book.  ADE does not seem to see the device to ask me to register it as the help screen suggest it might.  I've made sure that it is connected before I open ADE.  Please help.
    The eReader is authorized/activated with an AdobeID rather than with a computer.
    It is possible to have multiple computers and multiple devices all authorized with the same ID.
    The eReader gets its authorization when you Authorize Device from any computer;
    and then should work find when connected to any other computer authorized with the same ID.
    ~~~
    One possible reason for your issue is that you haven't authorized the laptop with your AdobeID.
    In that case ADE generates an anonymous/implicit ID with very limited capabilities.
    In particular, one capability missing is the ability to pass the implicit ID onto a device;
    so it is possible (???) that in that case ADE does not show the device.
    If that is the case
    ctrl-shift-D to ADE (cmd-shift-D if it's a Mac) on the laptop to remove the anonymous ID
    restart ADE (maybe not needed)
    authorize ADE with the same ID as you are using on the desktop
    restart ADE (maybe not needed)
    plug in the eReader and see if it is recognized

  • Digital Editions 2.0.1 crashes in Windows 8

    I have run Digital Editions 1.7.2 for a couple of years, easily accessible from my PAID Acrobat Pro, on several PAID publications.
    I am running Windows 8 on a Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 Touch under Windows 8 Pro x64.  I have tried using the updated version 2.1.  It seems to install fine, but it crashes every time I start it.  I had the same problem on my previous Lenovo Yoga 13 under Windows 8 Pro.  I see several similar complaints in a Google search.
    What's happening with the updates?  Does Adobe recognize this problem??  This is supposed to include security updates to 1.7 ....  I purchased books tied to ADE.
    P.S.
    I got a call from ADE Support:  They admit this problem in Windows 8 and are working on a fix for the next version.

    Here is a secure download for 1.7.2; which has been working fine for me on Windows 8/8.1.
    There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0 (and 2.0.1).  Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
    (You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
    Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

    As an aside: I prefer ADE1.7.2 to 2.0/2.0.1, as it is much less bug ridden.
    The particular bug that really hits me is that ADE2.0 will not work with library books when my Sony PRS-350 is plugged in.
    Nevertheless, apart from the bugs, ADE2.0/2.0.1 have worked for me on Windows 8/8.1

  • Adobe digital edition 2.0 not openned

    Hello All,
        In windows xp serivce pack-2, ADE 2.0 is working perfectly for few days only, but after few days ADE 2.0 is not opening. I dont know why it is not opening? Can anyone tell me reason behind this?
    If RUN>>MSCONFIG>GENERAL>DIAGNOSTIC STARTUP - LOAD BASIC DEVICES AND SERVICE ONLY > APPLY > OK and restarting the system then the ADE 2.0 is opening.
    If RUN>> MSCONFIG>GENERAL>NORMAL  STARTUP - LOAD ALL DEVICE DRIVERS AND SERVICES > APPLY > OK and restarting the system then the ADE 2.0 is NOT opening.  As you people are well aware that we cannot use the diagnostic startup since it will allow basic service and devices only.
    I have tried the following methods to overcome this issue (from internet)
    1. Uninstall Adobe Digital Editions using one of these two methods:
    Start > Programs > Adobe > Adobe Digital Editions > Uninstall
    Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs
    2. Initiate Uninstall
    3. In order to remove all remnants of Adobe Digital Editions /  Adobe Adept from the machine a "Registry Edit" will need to be  performed:
    Start > Run > Regedit
    4. Search for HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Adobe > Adept and Delete the full "Adept" folder
    5. Remove only the structures that are under the "SOFTWARE"  extensions. This will remove the Adobe ID / License and Activation Keys
    6. Clear any outstanding tasks that may be associated to Adobe  Digital Editions downloads
    C:\data\my digital editions
    C:\my documents\my digital editions
    7. Delete any documents within these folders:
    Restore > Tasks
    Restore > Failed
    8. Re-install Adobe Digital Editions
    9. I have updated Windows xp from SP2 to SP3
    The above methods didn't helped me to solve this issue. Then, i have used DIAGNOSTIC STARTUP and safe mode, it was opened, but not in normal user mode.
    Thanks,
    Mano.A

    ADE2.0 is not supported on XP below SP3 (and doesn't work very well on SP3, and is full of bugs on any OS).
