Starting from 9.2.2 on recent machines

Hi everybody,
For bad or good reasons and mainly because our very specific 'house-made' repair-tracking system still runs on OS9, we are actually investigating the most recent machines that will start in 9.2.2 (not Classic, real OS9 startup).
In particular, concerning the MDD G4 and flat panel iMacs, we now know that specific 9.2.2 CDs are needed. No universal 9.2.2 Z (International English) can be found, that will start up with all '9.2.2 capable' machines. It was so with earlier versions of the system but this is not anymore true. These specific CDs are included in the soft delivered with the machines.
Unfortunately, due to language reasons in our small country, Belgium, the machines are supplied with the Dutch/Flemish and French versions of the CDs but not with an universal English (Z) version. And, also for language reasons, we prefer to install it in English so that all our coworkers (Fr/NL) can work on all machines.
Of course, installing a universal 9 or 9.1, then update to 9.2.1 and to 9.2.2 wil not work with a recent machine.
So the main questions :
- Does anybody know a way to obtain these 9.2.2 Z specific CDs.
- Does anybody know which of these files are machine specific (MacOS ROM, System Resources, System ...) and what versions are needed for what machine ?
in particular:
- Mac (17-inch Flat Panel) - iMac 800mhz/17/256MB/80GB/SuperDr/DSH2
- Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Door 2003) PMG4 1.25GHZ/256/80/COMBO/R9000PRO
And a bit further :
We also know that some of the 'not officially os9 capable' machines will nevertheless run on OS 9 with specific files (MacOS ROM and the famous 'Custer' a.o.) and depending on hardware configurations (SuperDrive or not ...)
- Does anybody know were i can find reliable info on OS9 startup on 'forbidden' machines ?
Thanking you in advance for help

HI, Olivier. Duplicates of some model-specific OS 9.2.2 installer discs can still be obtained directly from Apple Customer Service, by telephone only, for a fee. Whether one can readily obtain these in English-language versions outside the USA, I don't know. If you have a reliable contact in the USA who could call Apple and ask for the discs you need, that might be the most expeditious way to find out whether they're available. If you do so, be sure to supply your contact with the serial numbers of the Macs in question; that will (or at least it should) help to assure that you get the right discs for it.
If only the two Mac models you've mentioned are at issue, it's probably reasonable to expect to find the discs you need eventually, either through Apple or some other source (US sources undoubtedly offer the best chances of success for English-language discs). If you will need to find model-specific OS 9 installer discs for a large and/or constantly changing array of older and newer Mac models, you would be foolish to persist in running your tracking system on OS 9-based software. Those discs are getting harder and harder to find as time passes, and many of the people who offer them for sale — particularly on Ebay — either don't really know what they're offering, or deliberately advertise them falsely.
In contacting Apple to ask for replacements, it would be a very good idea to find out, if possible, the Apple part number for any disc that Apple can't supply. I don't know whether Apple will give those out, but if you can get them they will be invaluable in searching for the disc from other sources. Every Apple disc bears a unique part number, and knowing exactly what number appears on any disc that's offered for sale could save you a lot of headaches.
I don't know exactly which files on a model-specific installer disc are model-specific. It sounds as though you may know more about that than I do. Nor have I ever heard of "Custer", and I can't advise you on running OS 9.2.2 on unsupported Macs.
Good luck in your search.

I would like to know if after I erase all my data, empy hard drive inside the macbook, the time machine will erase all my files that I have saved in my "WD "My passport" external hard drive

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine has to erase the external disk in order to make backups. Before setting Time Machine up, copy the files of your external disk to the hard disk of the Mac in order not to lose them, and then, set up Time Machine. The first backup will start automatically.
If you want more information about Time Machine, read the Pondini's site > http://pondini.org

  • I just bought a new Macbook Pro and transferred my iTunes archive of music to it. How do I transfer the playlists from my other computer(s)? iTunes on the new machine wants to start from scratch.

How do I transfer playlists from my other Apple computer(s) to my new Macbook Pro? I think I have successfully moved the music (archive) but the new machine wants to start from scratch on the playlists.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
Essentially you need to copy over the itunes folder
    username/Music/itunes
Over to your macbookpro I suggest using an ethernet cable as it is way quicker. Put it in the same spot on the new Macbook Pro
    username/music/
This should bring over the playlists etc. Then just put the music back in from the archive

It would be much better if you had separate drives for the pictures and Time Machine backups.....but, if you want to use the same drive for both purposes, temporarily move the folder with the pictures to another location for safe storage.
Run the Time Machine backup on the hard drive and verify that everything is working correctly. Time Machine will format the disk for you in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as part of the backup process.
Then move the folder with the pictures back to the hard drive with the Time Machine backups.
When you have tested to make sure that everything is working again, then and only then should you delete the folder with pictures from the temporary storage area.
Again....it would be much better to keep Time Machine backups on a drive just for that purpose, and other data on another drive for that purpose. This is clearly one of those times when the fact that you can do something does not mean to imply that you should do it.

  • Starting from scratch question

I have both Carbon Copy and Time Machine backups. I have a question, I want to do a clean start, is it possible to reformat my drive, put in my operating system 10.6.2 from disc and then pull what I want from either back up program. Will it bring over anything from my old operating system? I live in Mexico and was told by a tech at our local Mac place (they fix macs, not an authorized dealer) that because of the slow starting and system hangups I should start from scratch. My original office and other program discs are in the U.S. and I won't be able to get them for awhile. They are all original programs that I own and have them backed up on an external. I just don't want to go through inputing a new operating system and then migrating anything that is causing the hangups back. Thanks for the help.

Before you do anything, you might want to run SMART Utility, just to be sure that your hard drive isn't starting to fail and causing all these problems:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/smartutility.html
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. SMART Utility is somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may find impending hard drive failure sooner. If your drive is headed south, then you would want to replace it.
I'm not all that familiar with CCC since I use Super Duper to clone, so I don't know what would be involved in restoring from a CC clone. However, I recently replaced my hard drive, and restored from a Time Machine backup, and that seemed to work well. I had to update the OS, so I feel that I had a completely fresh copy of it.
    Hope this helps!

I have two iMacs in different rooms and Safari started crashing immediately after opening on both machines. latest version is installed.Any ideas?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • HT3275 TM keeps starting from scratch.

I use TM about every week when I connect my MBP, via 800FireWire, to my Lacie 1TB drive which has a 750GB Mac Partition and 250 Windoze partition. Recently they have started from scratch. Today I had to leave my  MBP behind as it was "Tidying up" afor over an hour! I have plenty of space on my Lacie drive with some old Back-ups and photos. Help!

Ok, starting TM again. Has been backing up for about 5 mins. and shows:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb
If I open the TM partition and look at the last backup that stopped when I did the disk verify, it shows an uncompleted backup "package" that is 84 gigs. My internal hard drive has only 72 gigs on it. Also, TMBuddy now shows this about that last backup:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb
No pre-backup thinning needed: 33.46 GB requested (including padding), 323.56 GB available
Copied 1 files (0 bytes) from volume 10.5 Ext. Startup.
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.
    Bulk setting Spotlight attributes failed.
Copied 6196 files (9.8 GB) from volume Snow Leopard.
    Backup canceled.
Stopping backupd to allow ejection of backup destination disk!
That it had backed up only 9.8 gigs. ??
Something is wrong but I don't have a clue.

I have Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2 (424). I am having an identical problem.  All my pictures are imported into Iphoto when I downloaded them from my camera.  Until recently, I thought that the pictures were actually saved in the library.  Since I need to crop my pictures for the web, and Iphoto doesn't do that, I purchased Photoshop Elements to do that.  To my surprise, when I try to get a picture from Iphoto to Photoshop, it can't be done. That was when I realized, after wasting a lot of time, that the photos are not in the Iphoto library.
I started naming the pictures on Iphoto so I had a recognizable file name to open on Photoshop. Couldn't find it.  I looked in the Backup folder and the Transfer software folder (I have a Nikon camera), and the names I entered in the Iphoto display, could not be found.
When I am trying to upload a photo to the web, I get the Finder folder showing  with an active folder called "Photos" under "Media", which only displays Iphoto and PhotoBooth.  This is a folder name that I cannot find in my HD anywhere when I look for it.  If I edit a picture with Photoshop, I am not going to save it back to Iphoto (not sure whether it will work properly).  How do I get my folder of edited photos to show when I want to upload a picture to the web?
Where (the name of the folder) do I find the pictures I see displayed on the Iphoto library, including any name changes, keywords added, and so on?

See my response to your other post.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen starts from the same song

I recently updated my iPod Touch 4th gen, 32 GB to iOS 6.1.2, from 5.1.1. I skipped iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1, and 6.1.1. After the update, I noticed that when I play music from my "All Music" list, my iPod always starts on the same song, no matter what song I listened to last. Sometimes it starts at a song that's farther down the list, but I haven't been able to figure out what circumstances caused it to start at that song. To make things more confusing, once it chooses a different song, it always starts from that song.
I have confirmed that Shuffle and Repeat are both OFF. This issue occurs whether I have recently charged/synced my iPod or not. It also occurs after I perform a hard restart on the iPod. I have not tried restoring it, because I have not had time to dedicate the several hours it would take to re-install iOS and copy all of my stuff back onto it.
My computer is running Windows 7, 32-bit. My iTunes is version 11.0.2.26.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone has questions relating to this issue, I'd be happy to answer them.

I didn't mention this in my initial post because I didn't think it was relevant, but the Home button on my iPod doesn't work. I've been using the virtual home button provided by turning Assistive Touch on.
I did try the first solution you suggested, but nothing happened. I'll make another post when I try the second method.
On a side note, and if it makes any difference, the device in question is not a phone. It's an iPod Touch.

  • How do I transfer old masters from a vault to a new machine

I have Aperture Masters on an old iMac, saved into a vault on an external hard disk . I bought a new iMac and want to bring the originals from my old machine onto the new machine.
Presumably, I can download them from the vault to the new machine, but I'm not sure how.
So far, I've managed to import versions onto the new machine but not masters. I'm terrified of doing the wrong thing and losing thousands of vital photos, so any help greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum.
Tell us what it is you're doing to get the versions.
Was the old library managed or referenced? If you used a referenced library, your masters were not backed up to the vault.
If you used a managed library, restoring from a vault is straight forward. Just launch Aperture on the new iMac then choose
File>>Vault>>Restore Library then tell Aperture where the vault is. You might want to create a new blank library before you start.

    Mac OS 10.5 /
I deleted the " Private" folder ... and emptied the trash. So the folder and its contents no longer exists on my computer at all !!!
I do have the OS 10.5 dvd that i purchased years ago...
But my computer will not start from it on its own.
My question is what is the open source or terminal language code used to tell my mac to look in the DVD rom drive for startup info?  I know that im not the only person in this world who has deleted the "PRIVATE" folder and emptied the trash so it no longer exists on their machine...
That said theres gotta be a common fix for a Power PC G4 that has the OS X dvd in the rom drive but wont look to it to reinstall the vital contents of the PRIVATE folder.
Once again there is not a copy of this file or its contents in the recycle bin...
Also rebooting the machine , pressing and holding the letter C does not prompt the machine to look to the dvd rom drive.
I was reinstalling pro tools and figured I would make some room by cleaning my computers HD...
Lol It was a bad choice to delete this file ...
    Thanks guys

Okay sorry it took forever to respond... But for a while there I gave up on this computer!!!!
Money's been tight lately , so taking it in to a professional was not yet an option... though I did consider it eventhough.
Anyway long story short im glad I didnt spend any money because I already had all the tools necessary to fix this issue but was going about it in the wrong way. Okay so here is my scenario and the breakdown... Though this may not fix the issue for everyone :( which *****... But I know we all will have different circumstances.
    Anyway here we go...
Okay so first things first....  Years ago I purchased the OS 10.5.1 disk ... So that has always been in my possession!!!!
I realize that some may not have a disk to reflash your OS to your hard drive... but if you do your in luck.
2ndly ... I had an external harddrive with all of my itunes downloaded music so it was more than okay with me to delete my primary HD because all the important stuff could either be copied over or repathed to be located.
-------If you dont want to read through the whole story the fix is summed up in the bottom section-------
    Okay so now the SOLUTION!!!!
By trial and error , and pure boredom I opened up my computer to clean the inside...
    AND
    "Disconnected the primary HD"
and just because ....... REBOOTED my computer. Just to see what it would do.
Upon restart and though it looked like it would repeat its usual cycle...
About 1 minute in to that process my computer froze for about 2 seconds and flashed to the OS installation screen.
Mind you I havent seen this screen yet... Probably hasnt been since I installed the OS years ago.
After a bit of trial and error...
I decided to tell my computer to startup from the OS 10.5 disk located in my dvd rom drive and restarted once again...
    this setting is under
    Utilities / startup disk
After a little more trial and error ... I realized that I could reconnect the primary HD , restart the machine and return to the OS installation menu.
    So upon this discovery
I went to the Disk Utility located under Utilities
Highlighted my primary HD located in the left hand column
    Once highlighted ...
In the heading section on the right I selected the option
    Erase
in which I erased My current OS on my primary HD ...
I used the first option in the list under security... Because it seemed like the least invasive and would take the least amount of time to see if this process would actually work.
    I FORGOT to add something...
Another reason why I deleted my primary HD!!!!!
I forgot to say that it WOULD NOT!!!!! Show up in the STARTUP list as an option...Even After multiple reboots....
But like clockwork... Once I deleted its name IT SHOWED UP as an option!!!!
So back to the next step...
I returned to the STARTUP option under utilities ... And was then able to see MY primary HD now as a startup option...
But ofcourse it had no name because it we previously erased it.
So when Clicking my newly erased HD ... I was almost immediately prompted to REINSTALL the OS ...
Which said it would take about 57 minutes ... But I believe was alot less...
My issue was resolved ... My computer then stated the install was SUCCESSFUL!!!!!!! :))))))))))) lol ;)
It was like I was setting up for the first time ;) asking for my registration info...
The dilemma of deleting the private folder and emptying the trash is finally over resolved. Done ... and no extra money spent!!!!!!!!!
Its really crazy that the information for such a simple thing is not readily available. Especially being such a simple fix.
I know im not the only person who's had this issue , because i've seen numerous posts with similar wording.
I also know I wont be the last person to have this issue... So I hope this synopsis makes sense.
    -------One more time the fix------
*Insert your OS dvd into your dvd rom drive.
*Unplug your primary HD or corrupted startup disk
    *Reboot your machine...
Upon restart your primary HD will not be recognized...
    * you will then be prompted to select your language.
    Once selected
*Click Utilities/startup... Highlight the the selection that refers to the OS dvd located in the dvd rom drive.
    * Click restart...
!!!!!!!!!!Be sure to reconnect your Primary HD Before your computer restarts and you hear the chime!!!!!!!!
If you do not replug your HD before the chime it will not be recognized.
    In that case restart again.
    Upon restart once again
    *Choose your language...
    *Click Utilities / disk utility
In the left column select and
    *Highlight your HD ...
Then towards the top portion / center of the page
    *Click the heading Erase
Then on the page toward the bottom
    *Click security options
This will then provide erase options.
    I USED THE FIRST OPTION
    "Dont erase data"...
    *click OK
    * click erase...
Once erased which should take a few seconds
    *Cancel the disk utility...
    * Click Utilities / startup
And your newly erased HD should now appear in the list.

    Hi please help.
I have a iPad 2 , not jail broken, just 2 months old fresh from the apple store. Recently I have been directed to **** sites or a fake bad oink **** application, through various applications. From google chrome app, the photon app and safari.
I always delete cookies and cache on exit. I use photon and puffin to watch flash player videos on tv series site with links such as put locker. I heard that there is no virus for the iPad but Trojans do exist.
Pleae help, at first this was just happening with photon app now in 3 different apps, and it is directing me always to the same **** site. I don't watch **** so it's. it from cookies or whatever and my iPad has been randomly turning off and also the videos are working really badly now. Also there is a message red alert staying untrusted site and hacker may be intercepting your device. What is going on? Please help
Is their a new redirecting Trojan or virus for iPad 2. ? If yes how can I remove it and will it cause permanent damage to my device? How could I have got this virus and in 3 apps. I'm also, worried as I use my iPad to buy things online etc with my credit card. What shall I do?.. Do I restore my device? How do I do that as I cannot connect to iTunes as I do not have a computer, just my iPad. Any help appreciated thanks.

They broke a story on sept 4, 2012 titled "apple's iOS, the new favorite malware victims"
Despite the dramatic title of the article, the only mention of iOS in the body was this:
Even though malware is increasing in iOS, it still remains relatively low compared with other operating systems.
And, it provides no examples or other documentation. And, unlike you, I don't consider CNET "the most legit tech site on the internet". I find them to be generally biased in their reiviews and heavily influenced by advertisers.
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2012/06/26/yes-apples-machines-really-ca n-get-viruses
The Forbes article descibes issues with the Mac OS, of which there always have been some, though certainly far fewer than there have been on the Windows platform. It goes on to speculate :
All those iPads, iPods and iPhones? Is this going to be a juicy enough target for the virus and trojan writers to at least attempt to attack, even given the difficulty of doing so?
Again, the Forbes article doesn't mention any current viruses, trojans or malware that exist which will affect an unjailbroken iOS device.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/15/iphone-malware-kaspersky_n_1515074.html
And, the HuffPo article quotes Grebennikov thusly:
"Our experience tells us that in the near future, perhaps in a year or so, we will see the first malware targeting iOS," Nikolai Grebennikov, Kaspersky's chief technology officer, told Computing.
Again, even Kaspersky doesn't say such things exist now, merely that they might.
Speculation about what might happen in the future or articles focusing on the Mac OS or Android are not terribly relevant. So, if you do have any other citiations, preferably from a source that doesn't derive most of is revenue from the companies it reviews, that document a virus or trojan that affects an unjailbroken iOS device, I would be interested. I have not been able to find any. I thought, perhaps, as a professional, you might know of some.
    Thank you.

  • Working from Logic files on old Time Machine back up

    Hi there.
Apologies if this is a bit a newbie question, I'm not new to apple, but new to using Time Machine in these circumstances.
This is my issue. I have a 2.0ghz Dual core 500GB hd iMac in my semi pro music studio. I back up to a 1TB hd using Time Machine. The iMac was beginning to get very slow I guessed because it was 470 gb full, so I made sure the back up was completed, then I did a complete fresh install of Snow Leopard (up from Leopard).
    All good so far.
Now, everything back up and running, reinstalled Logic Studio, all plug ins etc etc, but I wanted to keep the computer fairly clear of files etc, so I was hoping to be able to work from the timemachine files. Now I guess I shouldn't use the same external hd with time machine now because it will start backing up the new almost empty Snow Leopard version. But here's the issue. I open a Logic Session from the back up and it all works, plays, I can make edits to the midi, audio, but as soon as I want to save I get a series of spool and permissions error messages. It seems to work if I save the file to my desktop and work from there though. But then I don't have this saved on an HD...
Does any one have any suggestions here?
Would it work if I bought a new hd, plugged them both into a USB hub, imported tracks I want to use from the old hd and time back up using time machine to a new hd?
To add another spin to the issue, I am also using a 15" i7 Quad MacBookPro. I want to use this in place of the iMac however I already have a USB input shortage (3 on my iMac version) and use a 2nd monitor. My macbook has the thunderbolt port... Does anyone know of any hubs using Thuderbolt?

How do i delete & reformat my time machine external back up drive & start reusing it again as a time machine back up facility??
    Welcome to Leopard Forums:
If you repartition your drive it's quick and works fine.
Using disk utility, create two partitions on the drive and then repartition into a single partition.
When creating two partitions, be sure to overrun the existing data. You should get a warning about losing all data, which is what you want.
    Leave everything else alone.
