Starting from a different drive

I already submitted this question sorry I am new; do not see it anywhere.
My neighbor was using my computer and clicked on something that gave me an error message saying the computer had a virus; but with research this seems to be a scam to get you to pay for support. I am not seeing anything weird or unusual. But I used disk utility to check and it said the main hard drive needed repair. the other hard drives inside the computer were fine. It is kind of freaking me out. I got the message to restart the computer from another drive, so basically: can I use the other drives that are in the computer, or do I have to use a laptop and hold down control K or something?  How do you do it?

I am running OSX 10.6.8. I didn't want to upgrade because Yosemite gets so much bad feedback
On 10.6.8, you will need your Snow Leopard install disk. Insert it in the drive, restart the computer and hold down the 'C' key when the chime sounds. You can let go when the Apple logo appears. Then use Disk Utility from there to repair the hard drive. (You cannot repair the drive containing the current system, which is why this is necessary.)
Yes I need to backup but I guess that means first clean it up, ugh.
Don't waste time cleaning it up. Your drive could be in the early stages of failing, and if that's the case, it could fail entirely at any time. If that happens, any data on your drive that isn't backed up will be gone for good. Backups take priority - higher priority than repairing the disk, actually - and you can worry about cleaning stuff up later.

It would be much better if you had separate drives for the pictures and Time Machine backups.....but, if you want to use the same drive for both purposes, temporarily move the folder with the pictures to another location for safe storage.
Run the Time Machine backup on the hard drive and verify that everything is working correctly. Time Machine will format the disk for you in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as part of the backup process.
Then move the folder with the pictures back to the hard drive with the Time Machine backups.
When you have tested to make sure that everything is working again, then and only then should you delete the folder with pictures from the temporary storage area.
Again....it would be much better to keep Time Machine backups on a drive just for that purpose, and other data on another drive for that purpose. This is clearly one of those times when the fact that you can do something does not mean to imply that you should do it.

  • Final Cut X reading from 2 different drives

I am currently sitting at my work desk and our workflow is set up that we have all our projects on the scratch disk to work from, and the back up drive updates every night backing up the computer and hard drive. Because of this, FCPX is reading the events from the main drive and the events from the back up. Every time i open final cut the events are on a different drive.  So the first time I saw this i tried to get all the events back onto the main drive, thus duplicating the events.  Then i noticed that all the duplicated events went onto the backup drive and off the projects drive, i restarted FCPX and it reversed again! Mind you, the events and projects are still in tact on the drives in finder but I don't know for certain that I am working from an event on the actual scratch disk or from the backup drive which could create problems.
I understand that FCPX has it's own heirarchy within the software and i havent moved any files around within finder only from within fcpx
these 2 pictures were taken 2 minutes from each other to show what happens.
I am also getting this prompt every time I start FCPX
I'm scared to delete any of the events becuase at this point I have worked on diferent projcts and i'm not sure which event those projcts were pulling from.
I want to know a couple things
1.) why is this happening and how do i stop it?
2.) in the future how do i stop FCPX from reading from the backup drive?
3.) If I do decide to delete the duplicates and in the event a projct i was working on was pulling from that particular duplicate, will it be easy to re-link the media I used?
Thanks in advance for the responses. this has become very frustrating.
    Steve

Thanks so much for this help.  It definitely gave me a starting point and a workaround.  However, I really want to know why FCPX is reading from the backup drive, is there anyway to just tell it to ignore the drive without mounting it?  I could just remount the drive before i leave for the day but thats something that i could forget to do. as in yesterday when i got 20 minutes into my drive home and realized i forgot to reconnect.
I know this seems like a "laziness" question but it really does worry me that final cut gets confused as to what projects are on what drives when both are connected.  It wouldn't worry me as much if both drives showed an identical projects list, that would make sense and i would have ignored it from the start.  But the fact that every time i restart final cut the projects are randomly visible or not visible on either drive really makes me worrisome.

  • Can i remove all and start again on different drive?

Hi, I was just wanting to know if i am allowed to completely remove creative cloud and start from scratch again on my larger drive as I did not want it all on my SSD as it was mainly for windows os alone?

When I try to change my drive it keeps telling me I can't install on a root drive, I really do not want to use my SSD C drive as this is dedicated to my OS only, how can I get my apps on my other internal IDE 1TB drive please?

  • Soft raid stripe from 3 different drives?

    Hi,
I'm on a mac pro running 10.5.8. Apart from the boot drive I have two 150GB drives which I have as a stripe. I wanted to add to them a 250GB drive either whole or as a 150GB partition, but disk utility returned with a failure saying mixed partitioning not allowed.
Is there a possibility to create a stripe from these 3 combined to push up the performance a bit more?
    Thanks
    Tomasz

You would have to delete the existing array then create a new array using the three drives. Bear in mind that anything currently stored on the existing array will be lost so you need to make a backup of the array beforehand.

  • How do I import IE settings from a different drive letter on the same computer?

I have switched to a new computer since my old motherboard went flaky. I took my old C drive and made it the secondary hard drive since I wasn't sure if win2k would boot properly from the old installation. I have IE installs on both C and D drives and i want to import my settings from the D drive. Firefox doesn't seem to allow setting a path when using the import function. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
You need to log into his account and look, under the Movies folder, for iMovie Events. Inside, you'll find folders with the events names and still further will be the movie itself. Copy each to an external media or use the Shared folder so both accounts can reference them.
Another option would be to attach an external HD and via iMovie (Events Library pane) move them to the new disk. You would preserve the thumbnails and analysis already performed on the videos.
    Good luck!

  • After Effects CC: how to retain Camera Raw's settings when opening the project from a different drive

I want to open a project from a drive which is different than the original one, but which has exactly the same folder structure and files as the original drive. When opening the project, all files appear as missing because the drive is different. When I replace these missing files for the ones in the new drive, After Affects relinks all media. However, the camera-raw settings that were embedded in such files are lost: After Effects opens the files as no previous camera-raw correction had been done. Is there a way to avoid this?

What could be in my project that makes it unable to open?

  • Abandon Old File History and Start New on Different Drive

    On W8 Pro,
Had an attached USB Drive for File History.
Needed USB Drive for something else.
Disconnected it and stopped file history.
File History says drive is disconnected.
I want to start is again on a new network drive, but system keeps asking me to reconnect the old one so that it can use history from it to use on the new one. I responded that I do nor want to use the old history.
Am not able to start File History on New Network Drive.
The Network Drive is a 4TB Seagate connected to the Router and also used for storing System Imges for this and other computers on the network.
Is there any way to convince the system that I never had a previous file history, so that I can start a new one ?

    Hi,
Sometimes, regarding this error,it may be caused by the Indexing Service.
I think we check Windows Search service to see if it is enable.
Please Open Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services>Windows Search and enable it.
If it doesn't work, please see the error log in the event view and upload here.

  • Restoring book marks from a different drive

i had to delete Firefox 3.6 do to a conflict with searchtempest. so i copied the favorites from Firefox to my flash drive and now i need to put them back so Firefox will see them. just where are the favorites in Firefox so i can use them again?

thanks for these answers but they are after the fact. i just copied the bookmarks folder to the flash drive then i deleted Firefox then i downloaded a new copied of the program and then installed it. then i went to locate the bookmarks data and i did not see the folder. so i just imported the bookmarks from internet explorer and rearranged them to my taste. thanks for the help.
i suppose i should have used the backup link and that may have worked better.
i would rather use a newer version of Firefox but the spellbound program fails in the newer versions and i like that little program. no one seems to have updated spellbound to work with the new versions of Firefox. when version 3.6 fails and i can't get it to go again i will go back the internet explorer or to chrome they have nice spell checker programs that i like but I'm use the fire fox so i just keep using it.

  • Product Revenue over several months starting from a different date

    Hi,
I have a question regarding product revenue. You can indicate for how many months certain opportunities generate revenue, right? Is this visible in the reports and is is it also possible to indicate the date when this opportunity will start taking place? Which variable should I use?
Any suggestions are more than welcome!
    Thanks in advance
    Kind regards
    Vincent

    Hi Vincent,
If you are reporting at opportunity level:
If you have an opportunity without any associated products, the 'Expected Close Date' defines when the Opportunity is due to close and when the revenue will be recognised within your sales pipeline. You'll notice at this point the field Date.Date should match the 'Expected Close Date'
If you are reporting at product level:
When you add a product to your opportunity the Opportunity Product.Start/Close Date field indicates when the revenue for that particular product starts. If you populate the # Periods and Frequency a new period is added each time accordingly (A new date.date). For example, you add a product with a frequency of monthly and a # periods of 3. The product is set to £100 of revenue per period. You report would be as follows:
    Product Date Revenue
    A 01/07/2009 £100
    A 01/08/2009 £100
    A 01/09/2009 £100
To find the date the opportunity starts you need to search for the Minimum Start Date out of all of your products.. You can use something along the lines of: MIN('Start/Close Date' by 'Opportunity ID'). To find out when it ends just replace MIN with MAX. To find the duration you can check the difference between the Min and Max dates, you could do something like: TIMESTAMPDIFF(SQL_TSI_DAY, MIN('Start/Close Date' by 'Opportunity ID', MAX('Start/Close Date' by 'Opportunity ID'). This returns the duration in days.
The syntax above isn't correct, you'll need to substitute the exact field names within the code but it should give you a good idea.
    Thanks

  • New PC and want to move library to a different drive location from original PC

I've just built my self a new PC and would like to move my iTunes music to my new PC.
I know this is a pretty straight forward thing to do as I have done it on more than one occassion before without any hassle.
It's a little different this time though, I need to move the libary to a different drive from the default location as my C: drive is an SSD and can't fit my entire libary on it.
I've got my iTunes music folder backed up on an external drive, I thought it would just be a case of installing iTunes on my new PC copying my music to the drive I want it on and telling iTunes that this will be my new storage location.
After a bit of playing around I managed to get iTunes to see all my music again.
I'm having trouble getting it to find my cover artwork though and my old ratings and playlist count.
Does anyone know how to restore these?
Also do I have to have 2 iTunes fodlers on the computer? 1 in the stanard C: drive loaction and 1 where I now have all my music. Can I not just have it all on the 2nd drive?
If I copy the 4 libary files from my backup into the new folder it gives me my old ratings and playlist count back but loses all the artwork and most of the files have broken links to them.
Sorry if I've not explained what I am trying to say very clearly, thanks for any help.

In iTunes under Edit > Preferences > Advanced turn off Keep iTunes Media folder organized, then click OK.
Use Edit > Preferences > Advanced to change the media folder location to D:\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media, then click OK. If iTunes asks to consolidate or move any files at this point say no or cancel.
Open the menu File > Library > Organize Library... tick Rearrange files in the folder "iTunes Media", and click OK.
In iTunes under Edit > Preferences > Advanced turn on Keep iTunes Media folder organized, then click OK.
Open the menu File > Library > Organize Library... tick Consolidate files, and click OK.
This should rearrange the media folder into the current structure with the minimum amount of physical file moves.
At this stage you should find that iTunes is now looking for your mobile apps at D:\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications. Check the properties of a single app just to make sure. If all is well you can reclaim the space on C:.
If it were me at this stage I would now close iTunes, then copy the library files and album artwork folder from wherever they are on C: into D:\Music\iTunes then shift-start-iTunes and choose the library at D:\Music\iTunes. It is at this point that the library is now truly portable.
Having made that work I would then close iTunes, move the iTunes folder up to D:\iTunes and shift-start-iTunes to open it, but that's my preference.

  • HT1751 i bought a new, larger external hard drive. copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive. iTunes will not start or run unless old hard drive plugged in.??

I bought a new, larger external hard drive. I have my iTunes library on the external drive instead of C: drive, Using Windows 7.
I copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive.
iTunes will not start or run unless the old hard drive is plugged in.
If I disconnect the old drive iTunes shuts down.
    Any ideas. ??

    Hello kskip,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive.  You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.
You can find the full article here:
