Starting from external disk: cannot unmount standard startup volume

Hi all,
I started my my mac from an external disk to do some maintainance on my standard startup volume but this volume cannot be ejected.
I already tried lsof to find out whether there is still a process running on the starup volume but lsof doesn't list anything.
what else could be a reason for this problem?

Hi Konstantin;
How did you get the system on to the external drive?
It sounds like there is still something that is dependent on the internal system drive.

We are implementing PCR Approval using adobe forms. Currently when we try to open the adobe form for Approval from the UWL we get the error(it actually displays with an information message symbol) "<b>HTTP handler for starting an external service cannot be read</b>" in an ITS screen. Hi Jocelyn,
    Thanks for that reply.
I tried the transactions SICF and WF_HANDCUST.
    1. In SICF under sap>bc>webflow-->wshandler when i double click on wshandler it shows that the service is active. But when i right click on the same and try to TEST it, i get an error
    <b>Error in Web service execution
The launch handler was called with an incomplete parameter list </b>
I am not sure what this error means.
The configurations available in this service are as follows,

    ICF Object --> wshandler

    hi Guys,
I have got the same issue. This blog helped me with tcode WF_HANDCUST. I have generated the url
http://waspgh.kcc.com:8083/sap/bc/webflow/wshandler-->Click on Generate URL and click on distribution.
Immediately u will get click on Test url . Click Test url . Then It is not successful. It stopped at
    http://waspgh.kcc.com:8083/sap/bc/webflow
Getting http page error. So use tcode sicf >sap>bc-->webflow service and activate it.
Then test the connection. It will be successfull.

When I started my iMac today, it started beeping like an alarm horn.  I shut it down, and held the startup button a little longer to get it to start.  Shortly after starting up, a dark 'film' slowly comes down over the screen and I get a message saying I have to shut down the computer.  I've tried to start from the disk, and before I can even run a repair off utilities, it happens again.  What's up?  Am I screwed?  HELP!!

What you are seeing is a kernel panic, often but not always connected with a hardware or peripheral issue, so, unplug everything except mouse and  keyboard, reboot and hold the shift key as soon as your hear the chime, continue holding it until you see the Apple Icon and spinning progress indicator, then post back.
It will take noticeably longer than normal to start.

  • Com.ms.securityExceptionEx in IE -- started from local disk

    Hi,
I use an applet that connects via intranet to a database. I know about all the security issues related to that, but here's the problem:
** it used to work: **
    - starting the applet from my local disk, it did work before in the browser (IE, security settings medium or low). starting it from the file/web server, it didn't work due to the security issues ('access denied').
    - changing the java.policy settings and using the plug-in and HTMLCOnverter, it obviously did work also when loading from file/web server.
    ** it doesn't work anymore: **
    - days later, it doesn't work anymore without using the plug-in. security settings low, starting from local disk!! The message is:
    com.ms.securityExceptionEx[myapplet.mymethod]: cannot access myhost.
I found this error message here in the forum, but often related to sockets or rmi. My applet is as simple as you can imagine and doesn't use any sockets or rmi. It works using appletviewer. Microsoft says sth. like 'an untrusted applet tries to execute a trusted method'. Something messed up with my IE? Is there any java.policy-like file or option for IE?
    Thanks for any help

  • Move iTunes library from external disk to internal disk

    Hello,
I am currently using a Mac Mini with an external disk to store my iTunes library as well as all the media files, apps, etc. The library is managed (consolidated) by iTunes and is also organized by iTunes.
I am about to buy the new Macbook Pro and with a 1 TB drive, I wanted to move the iTunes stuff (library, media, playlists, play counts, ratings, everything) to the internal drive of the new MBP.
    My questions are:
Can I do this migration (from external disk to internal disk of new Mac) as part of the Migration Assistant?
In case I can't do the above, what is the best way to do this after the new Mac has been set up?
How do I ensure that play counts, playlists, ratings, album art are preserved as I have spent considerable time setting those up?
I have 3-4 IOS devices syncing to this library. How do I ensure that when I sync them to the new computer/library, they will continue to work?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    1. See if this support answers your query http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889 and  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
    3. Make sure complete intune folder is copied over. The Itunes Library.itl file contains all meta data.
    4. Maybe someone else can make a definitive comment on this. I used migration assistant and was able to sync my ipad and ipod classic without doing anything special.  I presume that it worked because both were syncing to the same library albeit on a different computer.

  • Does run Mac OS X from external disk will damage Win7 installed at internal disk?

    Hi,
When I buy a Mac Mini Server 2011, I replace the Mac OS X Lion bootable disk with a SSD and install Win7 64, the other internal disk is also used by windows.
Now I need write some code in Mac OS using XCode, I assembling the Mac OS X Lion bootable disk with a USB disk shell and plug in Mac Mini's USB port, when I power on the machine and press the ALT key, the firmware show the Max OS disk, but I stoped.
I want to know if I boot into Mac OS, will it damage the Win7 disk? Can I apply OS patch or upgrade firmware?
    Thanks in advance!

Does run Mac OS X from external disk will damage Win7 installed at internal disk?
Of course not.  Why would it?

  • Can't Start from Install disk or external Hard Drive

I've installed an operating system on a external WD 120Gb hard drive. I am unable to start up from the WD Hard Drive or the Snow Leopard install disk, either by selection them from the Startup disk or by pressing 'OPTION' at startup. Every time one of these is selected, the computer starts from the MacBook internal hard Drive.
I have installed the operating system on an Iomega 1 Tb external and it doesn't show up on the Startup disk or when I start using the option key.
I have reinstalled the operating system on both the MacBook Pro Hard drive and he 120Gb portable.
I  have a 2Gb SimpleTech Dual Pro Drive, which I can see and start up by, using the Option key at system boot.
I have a 500Gb Iomega I am using for my TIme Machine.
I can't figure why I am unable to start up using the Software DVD.

Thanks for the tip. In the end I combined bits and pieces of what I had read on other peope's messages, what worked for me was putting the frozen computer to sleep with the power button and then waking it up with both the mouse and the C key held down at the same time. Individually nothing happened but with both the CD popped out.
    Thanks again,
    Jason

  • Cannot start from install disk

We have a multi mac household and I'm pretty sure (but not positive) the 10.5.4 install disk belongs to this computer (MacBook Pro).  I really need to use Disk Tools but when I try to start with the DVD I grinds for a couple minutes then just sits there with a gray screen (no apple logo). I've tried:
Inserting the disk normally, clicking on install and clicking the restart button as required.
Holding down the "c" while starting
    Holding down option while starting
Holding down "d" while starting (for hardware test)
    Zapping the PRAM
Changing the startup volume in the settings
..but I always get the same result as above. I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut down, then restart with the trackpad depressed to get the disk out.
    Questions:
    1) Does anyone have another idea I should try here?
    2) Is the gray screen I'm seeing a symptom of trying to start with the wrong system disk?
    3) How does one know if the install disk is the right one for the machine?
    Many thanks!!!

While the media issues get sorted out, I can offer a workaround to completing the disk repairs, sans Install DVD (BTW, that's why the latter day media came only one to the box; they rolled everything together into a single dual-layer DVD). Normal disk repairs require booting from alternate media because the OS is doing multitasking, that is, accessing the boot media thru various concurrent processes. If multitasking is disabled, the issue disappears.
So, since you're in the Leopard world, I offer two choices. Best would be you download and install the latest release of the AppleJack utility ( http://applejack.sourceforge.net/ ), this is the premier power-user disk repair utility, which we Lion users miss dearly. AJ comes with a quick and easy installer that simplifies the process of getting it ready. Else you will have to do some command-line stuff by hand.
How to proceed; get this down somewhere, cause the Mac won't be usable till you finish. Restart the Mac and hold down the Option Command S keys. This gets you into Single User mode. No graphics interface here and all commands have to be typed on the screen, just like Grampa did back in the dawn of the Computer Age. After the # prompt appears and if you previously installed AppleJack, just type applejack and the return key; follow onscreen instructions, at least do steps 1, 2 & 4. If #1 shows any errors, redo until it comes out clean. When finished, return to quit and restart as indicated by the AppleJack prompt.
If you did not install AppleJack, type the following command exactly as written, followed by the return key: fsck -fy  Wait until the # prompt reappears (may take awhile), repeat if any errors are indicated, then type reboot and the return key to restart the Mac. Not as thorough as AppleJack, but this will fix your HDD.
There, you will have now gone deep into the belly of the Unix beast running on your Mac. This is the non-graphics, non-fancy version of Disk Utility, just like computers were done before graphical GUIs.Since only a single process (fsck) runs in Single User mode, it is able to fix the disk without the multitasking issues. Of course, if you can't get a clean and error-free fsck run, the HDD has problems it can't fix (just like it may happen with DU) and you will need more help. BTW, fsck is the Unix geekcode for File System ChecK.

  • SDtart from external disk

I have a 21 inch iMac Late 2012.  I cannot start from any of the external disks, using the Option key or setting the startup disk in prefs. Any way to force the iMac to resart from an external disk?

I'm thinking that maybe his external hard drives partition is not set to "GUID Partition Table" ....?

  • MacBook fails to start from external drive

My Photoshop CS3 would not launch. After many other things, I installed the Mac OS (10.4.11) freshly on an external volume, and now PS launched, if I selected that volume as the startup volume.
    This emergency solution worked briefly.
Since the Adobe support at some point suggested that a defect font might be the culprit, I trashed all fonts from the main volume and replaced them by those of the fresh install. But then, I could not install PS onto the main volume.
And now, I can no longer make the Mac start from the external volume. The volume shows up in System Preferences/Start disk, I can select it, it is highlighted, everything looks like it should, but the Mac starts from the main volume.
So now, I can neither use PS, nor activate/de-activate/un-install it and thus not re-install it anywhere else. Adobe support has dropped out in silence.
One strange observation: the fresh OS install contained 2 custom fonts, that must have come from my original system -- how did they come to the new one??
2 other observations that might give a hint to the knowledgeable:
1-Before the system starts, the quotation mark flashes up briefly
2-Whenever I need to authenticate as the admin, I need to do it twice.
The main volume is a MacBook Pro 15", 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, from about 2007, serial number W86***VWW. <Edited by Host> The external volume is a WD MyBook connected via USB.
I have repaired the external disk and its permissions using Disk Utility from the System CD.
Can anybody help? Hopeful - Hening

Hi there, I asked for the Serial# to be removed, so don't be shocked.
Before the system starts, the quotation mark flashes up briefly
That means it can't find a booter on the drive selected to start from.
Have you done a PRAM reset...

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install to your +External drive+, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

  • Remove Mac OSX installation from external disk

    Hello,
I installed an extra max osx installation on an external disk. So i can starup from my HD or my ext disk depending on my start up disk choice. Everything works fine. Unfortunately i installed it in a partition with a lot off backup files in it, instead of creating a new partition dedicated only to the OS. I was wondering if there is a clean way of removing this installation without completely formatting the ext.disk again, so that i don't loose my data.
    Thanks

I hope you don't mind my jumping in. AFAIK, dumping the OS X files isn't a simple process because many of it's files and folders are hidden. It appears that the ext HD has more than one partition. If so, move your data to the other, then you can erase the partition, removing all of OS X's stuff. However, doing that looses your bootable backup. Details WRT to the HD, its size, number of partitions, how much used and free space, etc. should help to determine a strategy that saves the data and also provides for a bootable backup.

  • Macbook Pro doesn't start from internal disk. How to?

    Hi.
My Macbook doesn't startup. I tried to repair it but it isn't possible and now I need to do one last backup copy before format it. But it doesn't pass from the grey apple screen.
I've checked the S.M.A.R.T. and it is OK. What else can I do to start from the internal disk on last time?
    Thanks.
    Best regards,
    Telmo

Hi. Yes, I did. It goes on and on with the grey apple screen.
I just need it to boot one last time to save one Word document that I didn't had the chance to backup.
The internal disk appears on the disk utility when I star from the install disk and I select it to boot but when restart nothing happens.

  • Core i7 mbp will not boot from external disk

One upon a time, I tried to boot my new:
    Model Name:    MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:    MacBookPro8,1
      Processor Name:    Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:    2.7 GHz
      Number of Processors:    1
      Total Number of Cores:    2
L2 Cache (per Core):    256 KB
      L3 Cache:    4 MB
      Memory:    4 GB
      Boot ROM Version:    MBP81.0047.B0E
from a bootable Carbon Copy Cloner backup on my external FW800 drive.  (This, after I used Migration assistant to move the user over from My MacBookPro 5,1 core 2 duo machine.)
It didn't like it, booting from the CCC clone, that is.  There were problems with the boot of the new machine from that external disk and then problems with the boot from the internal disk.  I repaired disk permisssions and all seemed to be well booting from the internal disk for several months until I tried to boot from my SL 10.6 2Z691-6431-A CPU Drop-in DVD upgrade included with the initial purchase.  That didn't work.  I got the grey "restart your computer by holding down the power button" screen with a bunch of words and numbers in the background.  This also happened with the grey intsall disks that shipped with the machine with 10.5.7 on them.
Following this, the turning gear times are erratic, varying from 11 to 40 turns on boot up with an odd flicker happening for a fraction of a second during the turning gear screen.  From time to time I'll get some beach balling while the login is taking place and all of the icons are loading in.  After that, the machine functions fairly normally.
I know there's a problem though and I'm looking to resolve it with any advice the community can offer.
I have used DiskWarrior in the past but not for this machine which has not been used with this machine since it's incompatible.  I also have a full timecapsule backup. I also have a partition on an external drive with OS 10.6 on it.  Haven't tried to boot from it because I'm scared it'll mess things up worse.

I'm trying to boot my core i7 from any external disk without success getting only the grey restart screen.  The machine will neither boot from the 10.6 upgrade disk, nor the external firewire disk.
I'm not sure, but it seems that you're suggesting that I rebuild the OS as though it were a brand new machine without any of my s/w or data, and I cannot conceive of such a monumental task. If you mean that I should reinstall the OS, that would be fine, but I can't boot from a DVD, which is what prompted this query to begin with.
I would like to resolve the external disk boot failure.

  • Just installed 10.6.3 on MacBook Pro and external disks cannot be seen by OS.  Help

i installed 10.6.3 on my 17" MacBook Pro (updating from 10.5.8).  All my external disk drives which had all been visible to the system and accessible before the update no longer were visible to the OS. Not in the sidebar and not in the disk utility. After checking all connections etc. many reboots, resetting the pram i still am unable to see or access these disks.
From there i updated to 10.6.8 but exactly the same results. i'm not sure where to go from here. i have 4 externals on 2 different  usb routers and 1 external on a firewire router.
I'm considering removing the routers and trying each drive separately and directly connected to the laptop.
And of course, i'm short of time.
Anyone with similar problems and/or solutions?

You mean USB HUBs, correct? Not routers.
Yes remove the HUBs and try the drives connected directly to the computer.
