Starting out hardware

Hi I'm looking to start developing and have some questions about what I should be looking at in terms of hardware.
I've looked across the mac range and have so far only come to conclusion that should not be looking at a portable solution. Please correct me if I'm wrong but from other threads I've read they seem to imply that it, putting screen size to one side, they are not the best environment.
This therefore leaves me with two possible solutions. The Mac mini and an iMac. It is at this point that I struggle to decide.
One thread indicates that 4 GB is barely sufficient for the OS and running an app which indicates that if it is going to be used for development more ram is preferable, most likely 16 GB rather than 8. Therefore what is preferable between an Mac mini spec'd to 16 and an iMac as they are getting similar in price at this point. I'm also considering can a mini be used with a standard PC monitor using a DVI adapter? If so, space wise this saves me a lot and is very beneficial and is a few hundred cheaper.
At this point, I could really use people's thoughts and info as I'm after good environment for starting to develop without breaking the bank.

If you decide to buy a Mac Mini it is important to know which screen to buy ...
(I say this from experience because of the Mac's operating system does not look good on any screen !!) ;

Mac mini has two ports : HDMI , ThunderBolt .
You can buy a screen that has a port DVI or D-SUB ,
But you will have to buy an adapter : Dvi to Hdmi or D sub to hdmi ...
I use a screen of ViewSonic and very pleased .
You can connect any keyboard and mouse , This computer does not have a disk drive, you will need to buy .

Starting out with cRIO

Hello,
What's the most inexpensive way to start programming for FPGA cRIO based applications? I'm interested in learning to develop for an FPGA and cRIO but can't afford the cRIO, is there an inexpensive way to simulate for these (I think even the realtime drivers may be expensive)
I found this RIO eval kit, but I'm not sure if it's what I need to start learning cRIO/FPGA LabVIEW development?

Yes - I agree with GerdW that the myRIO is a great way to get started with cRIO & RT/FPGA programming. It's very easy to set up and use.
I recently used one for a personal project - making a giant version of Tetris! (https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-35435)
I can also recommend the eval kit - it comes with a single board RIO an addon board that contains lots of useful things for starting out with RT/FPGA programming (an LCD display, analogue input/outputs that are linked, some push-buttons etc.). I currently have one on my desk at work as we've been doing some stuff recently with LCD displays. They also have onboard CAN (e.g. automotive) so if you're interested in doing anything with that then I don't think you can do that with the myRIO.
If you can't get the myRIO cheaply enough (because you're not a student - but it's worth talking to NI anyway) then the eval kit is a bit more representative of what it's like to use a cRIO and you can get further with it without needing any additional hardware.

My address book and iPhone pics have become low resolution. Is there a way I can prevent this from happening when I start out with a higher resolution picture?

I guess I squeezed my entire issue into the subject line. lol When I sync my iphone to my laptop I notice that all my address book pics and iphone pics have become lower resolution, even though I started out with the resolution that I really needed to produce decenty address book printouts. I doubt I can correct the losses of resolution that have occurred but can anyone help me figure out how to prevent future losses? Thank you!

Plugins usually are installed externally to Firefox. However, you can disable them in Firefox so that Firefox does not use them.
SearchReset is supposed to automate the task of resetting certain preferences, but you still can edit them manually if necessary.

Usually it works to choose your preferred search engine from the drop-down. To remove an unwanted search engine plugin, usually the Manage Search Engines... choice at the bottom of the drop-down takes care of it.

There might be another way to hijack that search box; I think some of the other frequent responders probably are more familiar with it than I am.

CD/DVDW SN-S082D issue - Windows cannot start this hardware device Code 19

I've had my laptop for a little over a year now and it's had it's fair share of problems, most of which are fixable or there is a workaround.
Earlier today I inserted a disc into the drive and tried opening it up, went into "My Computer" and found the disc drive was not listed.
This has happened once or twice before and a simple restart fixes the problem.
I've restarted twice and this time the problem wasn't fixed, after going into "Device Manager" I found there was a problem with the device and it gave me the following error
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."
As usual 'Check for soulutions' is useless and returned no results.

This is a little bit strange for me... anyway I will try to help you.
It seems that the registry keys are corrupt and therefore your CD/DVD drive cannot work properly.
Try simply the solution proposal mentioned here in the Microsoft doc:

I see that you are unable to scan with the Photosmart 1315.
What driver are you using?
The driver listed in the url below is a basic print driver that will allow you to print only.

XBMC: HDMI audio starts out OK, then gets distorted after few minutes

I have posted about this on the XBMC forums, but one of the developers kindly informed me that they do not support XBMC on Arch Linux in any way, so I should take my queries elsewhere. I am hoping that someone here might be able to shed some light on my issue.
I am trying to use XBMC 13.1 (xbmc-13.1-2) with Samsung EH5300 32" Smart TV (2013 model) over HDMI connection. The HTPC computer is AMD-based (AMD A4-5300 APU, which includes Radeon HD 7480D GPU), and runs an up-to-date Arch Linux (last full system upgrade on 2014-06-26). I am using the open source "radeon" driver (xf86-video-ati-1:7.3.0-1). Everything has been great except the sound:
The sound starts out fine, but a few minutes later it begins to get distorted. At first it sounds like reverb affecting voice only, but with time the distortion increases until it sounds kind of cued TV noise. If I restart the video, the sound works again for a while. If I change options in Settings -> System -> Audio Output, like the number of channels or pass-through, the sound is again good for a little while. If I enable or disable "Stereo Upmix" or change audio stream from the "Audio - Settings" dialogue window available during video playback, it too seems to "reset" the sound to sounding normal for a while.
Has anyone seen something like this?
I have tried different videos, and it seems like HD videos are affected more than SD videos, starting with distortions only a few minutes in (except the one Xvid video, which was fine for 15 minutes). Some SD videos are completely fine, some start having distortion issues only after 20 minutes or so. Judging from video information, if the video uses 5.1 channels (all HD videos fall in this category), it definitely gets distorted; if a video only uses 2.0 channels (like the SD videos), some are fine while others get distortion later on. I have "Number of channels" in Audio Output settings set to 2.0. Changing this (or any other audio settings) has not affected the distortion.
Following Arch Wiki: Radeon note about HDMI audio, I tried adding radeon.audio=1 to the kernel line; this did not solve the issue, just added some visual glitches.
In the XBMC debug log I posted, the distortions happen at around 17:26, though there is absolutely nothing logged at that time, even though I enabled "Verbose logging of AUDIO component" in the Debugging settings. The video I was playing there showed the following in the information window: 720 H.264 dts 5.1 16:9.
Any suggestions, ideas, or experiences would be appreciated. It definitely seems to be XBMC issue, since I was able to play the same HD video through mplayer without any problems (for at least half an hour, which would have already showed distortions several times through XBMC).

OK Imagine that Connection speed from your ISP is like an empty freeway. You can go full tilt (upto that road's speed limit)
Bandwidth is like a busy freeway where you only get to go as the bit you are in allows.
Reducing the Bandwidth in iChat or in the System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab is like a vehicle that has a maximum speed that is slower than the speed possible on the freeway.

Related to the question, I suspect you have licensed fonts that cannot be embedded. Thus, the PDF is using what it is finding to be an equivalent as well as it can guess. Did you check the font list in the PDF?

Lightroom 5 version 5.0 starts out fast, but then slows my computer to a crawl. What to do?

I upgraded from Lightroom 4 to Lightroom 5 after the release version 5.0 came out. But it doesn't work well. It starts out fast, but performance rapidly deteriourates. And it affects every application running on my Windows 7 PC. I assume this is due to massive memory leaks. The only way out seems to periodically reboot my machine.

ng exports (which was reported as a cause of this behavior by others). I get it just using the Developer module and having many steps with many photos. Also with the Book module it happens very soon. Does anyone have a workaround until Adobe actually fixes their product so it works right?

I'm having the same issue. I'm running the trial version, but in 3 days when the trial is over I don't expect to upgrade. LR4 works great on my machine. LR5... there's a problem here Houston. Fix it and then I'll think about upgrading.
BTW - the tool I had high hopes for - the enhanced spot heal/clone tool... good idea, but needs work.

Chat Video quality starts out fine, then fades ...

My video starts out good, then after a minutes or so, the picture gets pixelated and the audio garbled. The person on the other end has no such issues and can see/hear me just fine.
In iChat, my bw is set to 'none'. In system preferences, my Quicktime streaming speed is 1.5 Mpbs.

Just Starting out with java packages

Hello,
I'm a beginner and I'm starting out with java packages.
I wrote two simple .java files, one test program and one containing a simple class.
Both files are compiling without errors but When I run the program I get an error NoClassDeffoundError.
I use the import <package> statement And I think I'm using the CLASSPATH variable correctly.
SET CLASSPATH=d:\nopol
path for the .java containing the test class is:
d:\nopol\utilities \myapp.
In the test file I use "import utilities.myapp.*.
I would be very happy if anyone could help me

The test file should be in d:\nopol, if it's not a part of your package utilities.myapp. Everything should be compiled from d:\nopol, the test class with "javac ClassName.java" and the class in the package with "javac utilities/myapp/ClassName.java".
Your classpath seems fine for now, though. But yes, do add the period there, otherwise you could run into problems later.

How to start Apple Hardware Test under OS X Lion

Since I made the upgrade to OS X Lion I cannot start Apple Hardware Test with the old method that works under Snow Leopard.
Under OS X 10.6.8 I used to keep D key pressed until a picture appeared in the middle of the screen. With Lion it doesn't work, even under Wi-Fi internet connection.
Any suggestions?

I have the same issue after installing the new update and reinstalling iTunes doesn't fix the issue.
I found disabling Apple push (APSDaemon.exe) from the start up will stop the error from appearing, however this will disable wireless syncing. If you don't use it than it shouldn't be an issue.
I'm using a PC so you can disable it using the msconfig command and turning it off in the Startup tab. I don't know if Mac users are experiencing the same issue. Hopefully Apple will fix it in their next update.

Listener starting out of ASM home?

I have a fresh install of 10.2.0.3 RAC running on Solaris 2.9.
We have older 10.2.0.3 RAC installs where the ASM HOME and the RDBMS HOME(10.2.0.3) shared the same home and our Listener started under the .../10.2.0/network/admin directory like any other stand-alone database.
We separated the ASM HOME and RDBMS home on our new install and the Listener now automatically starts out the ASM HOME instead during bootup.
Is it okay to run the Listener out of the ASM HOME? It appears to work but our GRID is finding Listeners under both spots (RDBMS and ASM HOME)
Can I changed it to start out of the RDBMS home like all our other Listeners? If so, where does Oracle look during bootup of RAC to set this and how can I change it?

So it appears that the variable ACTION_SCRIPT is being set to the ASM home during CRS startup which would explain why it's using that home.
Is there a way to change that variable? I'd like to start the listeners out of the RDBMS home like all my other databases.
I'll dig around and post back here if I find it first.

I have now recently downloaded 10.0.2 which is confusing in itself, as, as far as I can ascertain that is actually version 11, but I'm not even sure about that.
Version 10.0.2 is the newest version and the successor to GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.5).
The '11 is referring to the iLife '11 suit of multimedia application - the older GarageBand was a part of this bundle.

IPhoto Pictures Start Out Blurry And Become Clear 10 Seconds Later

I've long been aggravated by the fact that when I'm browsing images in iPhoto, they start out looking pixelated and low-res for about 10 seconds before becoming clear. If I'm in Organize or Edit mode, and have the picture on the screen full sized, and then I hit the right or left arrow, I get an ugly, pixelated enlarged thumbnail and then about 10 seconds later the high-res version finally loads and it looks clear. This makes browsing my photos a real pain, as I have a 10 second wait before I can see each picture in high-res. This has always been a problem with iPhoto - every version I've had since it came out.
How do I fix this? Is the app just horrible at memory management? I have a very fast computer. Can't iPhoto anticipate that I'm going to view the next photo over (left or right) and pre-load the large size before I get to it?

There is a lot less lag on later versions. Face it, iPhoto 4 hasn't been in active development for more than 6 years. I wouldn't hold my breath on an update.
