Starting Over - in more ways than one.

My how things have changed since I bought my new 6100/60 Power PC for $3500! I'm really overwhelmed and need advice on what to buy. My budget is $2500 for computer and camcorder. I have three boys and one girl, all grown and out of the house, and now baby #4 the way. Suprise Surprise!
I don't want to go out and buy something that's not compatible. I've been doing some research and there's so much to look for. I want plug and play. I really like the new Imac. I think a 20" model is all I could afford. How important is the processor speed for editting movies? What is enough ram? Is MiniDV with firewire the best format for interfacing the two?
I've been behind the times for a couple of decades and would like to get caught up, at least for a few months.

Be sure to look at the deals on the Apple Store refurb page. In my experience, the refurb Macs look new, and they have the same one-year warranty (and opportunity to extend with AppleCare). They just come in a plain brown box. You may save some money, or have enough to get the 24-inch iMac.

As for the camera, if it is a new video camera you are buying, the trend seems to be for using a USB connection instead of FireWire (at least for consumer products). And Apple did remove FireWire from two of their most recent products, the unibody MacBook and MacBook Air.
Any recent iMac should be able to handle non-pro movie editing with ease.

Sharing media across my home network, in more ways than one...

Bear with me, because I can only just get my head around this myself:
I would like to have a network accessible hard drive to which I can store all the photos, music and video in my home. The devices accessing it are a MacBook Pro (10.5.3), a MacBook (10.4.11), and a Sony Playstation 3 (whatever the latest update is).
My home network is working correctly, and everything can connect to each other. I currently use Nullrivers MediaLink software to stream my MacBook Pro's content to the Sony Playstation 3, which works as well as it should. I also have an Airport Express (connects to my home network) connected to some speakers, to which both my MBP and my partners MacBook can stream to (we use Airfoil for other audio).
However, I would like to consolidate all our media onto one device, so that we are using the same iTunes library(1), the same iPhoto library(2), and all of our video is also accessible to both of us. Now I know how I would do this using a plain old network attached storage device, but this wouldn't allow me to stream the media to the Playstation 3, as far as I know - the Playstation 3 needs to have some sort of DLNA protocol to access the data. I'd love to be able to fire up the Playstation 3 and show people photos/videos etc, without first having to turn on my MBP.
Now I have looked into this a bit, but I don't know much about network storage, and the only options I have seen are either a DLNA certified NAS, such as those from Buffalo's range, or another computer running as a server (something like a G4 Cube or Mac Mini). The latter option wouldn't be ideal because I would like to have the box wired to my router, which is next to the TV, and I don't want to have to keep a mouse and keyboard hanging around for admin, or need different adaptors to connect it to the TV to see it, besides having the power consumption of another computer running 24/7.
Buffalo's LinkStation Live drives seem reasonably priced, and on paper seem to do everything I would like, but I have been put off by poor reviews, posts on PS3 forums saying they don't work, and also that they are "slow".
So am I stuck with having to look for a cheap Mac Mini, or going with a NAS HDD that might/might not work with the Playstation 3?
We would not have an issue with not being able to share iTunes store purchases, we do not have very many. We would obviously need to be able to sync our iPods from either of our machines, drawing from the main repository, if thats possible.
The ability to access the shared drive remotely would get bonus points, but is in no way necessary.
(1) We would share the same Library file, so that any changes made by either of us would be reflected on each others iTunes windows. If there are issues with two people accessing the same library at the same time, we probably wouldn't run into them because we rarely use iTunes at the same time. This sounds silly but you know what I mean.
(2) Is this even possible with one of the computers running iPhoto '08 and one running iPhoto '06? This isn't a major issue, music sharing being the main one.

Get rid of the tracking cookies. They are used to profile and track your browsing history. While they are privacy invading, by calling them spyware, MacScan is being a little dramatic in trying to sell you its crap. And in the future, for whatever browser you use, don't allow third-party cookies.
To prevent tracking, get Ghostery. In addition to having Ghostery and forbidding third-party cookies, I clear out all cookies from one browsing session to another. If you always do that, you won't have any tracking cookies to worry about, so you won't need MacScan to find them for you. Btw, MacScan finds the tracking cookies in the first few minutes of scanning; if you want to use it for that, then that's all the time you need to run it for. But, as I said, you won't have any tracking cookies around if you just remove all cookies and don't allow third-party cookies. As soon as you visit a site that needs them, you'll just get new ones. No problem.

Needs Help In More Ways Then One!

This is my situation. I have a map. This map is of the greater Denver area. I need it to do things, and its not cooperating.
I want it to be a single image      on the web site, and when you roll over the image it "zooms in"      like a rectangle magnifying glass over where the mouse is and follow the      mouse, getting ride of the need for the scroll bar. So when you move the      move to the borders of "box" it'll move in that direction but      stop at the edges of the map.
I need to have a "button"      for each city and when your over the city to bring up a banner saying      something like "this is the city blah blah click for more info",      and have it attached to a url to so when you click it it'll take the user      to a dedicated page for THAT city.
I need to have the banner to be      "flashy" and look "professional"

I have had issue after issue with this thing, you have no idea! I need it done by the end of March and I've been working on it sence the beginning of January. So here are the problems im having
I have no idea how to      incorporate the "zoom" feature or what kind of command to use.      I've tried the "scale" one and it didn’t work right. I have NO experience      in actionscript what so ever. I tried using HTML and it was nice but not      "flashy" enough.
I cant get the banner to work      right, I have the buttons set up, I used the pen tool to make sure the      area is exactly covered so that there wasn't any gaps when your mouse      rolls over it. At first I used the oval tool and just made bubbles over      the general areas and had massive gaps in between cities and some ovals interloped      because they’re so close together. So I figured that issue out. Now I have      the buttons and I have each button have an "over" and a "hit"      frame. The "over" one for the banner and the "hit" one      for the url. I think I have that figured out but I don’t know how to put      the code in for just the "hit" frame to take the user to the url      and I don’t know if I have to make a banner for EVERY city or if there’s a      short cut I could use. And anyways I don’t want to work on that till I get      issue #1 fixed.
Just so you know what im working with here is the image im working with.
So if anyone could walk me through it per say or just tell me the available commands to get the "zoom" to work I would be your best friend forever. haha

Where is the EXACT version number shown? Where is the menu link to the Help file? Why is there no scroll bar? The new iTunes is terrible in more ways than I can list... how do I switch back to version 10?

The newest iTunes version has no Help option. Why? And, no ability to find out the version number.
The new iTunes, when in album view in Windows 7, has NO SCROLLBARS, so it is impossible to scroll the albums. Why?
Answer these questions, as I am an AAPL shareholder and I am NOT happy with these and other changes you've made to iTunes.

You may need to bring up your Menu Bar to see the Help menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Once you've got your Help menu showing, go "Help > About iTunes" and wait for the version number to scroll up from the bottom of the screen, as per the previous versions.

yes, just to verify i just did a complete re-assembly ( compile beans ; jar
; weblogic.ejbc ; move to domain\config\applications\application ) and am
still getting the same error as before.
furthermore, i dont know about wl internals at all, but it seems that the
container does recognize that this is a collection since the stacktrace
reveals a call to

Lion Address Book problem - all of over 2,000 contacts disappeared - one mysteriously reappeared - then they all reappeared during resync with Gmail!

The subject iine pretty much describes what happened.
I am wondering if it is anything to do with what looks like an odd file in the directory ~ Library -> Application Support -> Address Book
As well as the "real" database file there is this zero bytes one:
AddressBook-v22.abcddb.0F392545-78F2-4AE6-8D30-457C138332B2.unknown
From the date, it might be something to do with installing and linking Cobook to Address Book maybe?
These are the files and folders in that directory (sub-directory files not shown):
I have enabled the debug menu in Address Book but have not been able to find any info about how to use it. I lie! I did read that I might possibly have been able to "retrieve" the contacts using the debug menu "Force Refresh" - however that was after I had started to resync with Gmail contacts.
I realised that something odd was going on during resync when I saw that there were over 4,000 contacts being processed rather than the 2,000 or so that I was expecting. Initially, none of the contacts groups from Gmail were showing in Address Book after this partial sync (I stopped it when I saw what was happening). However, after quitting and restarting Address Book, the groups appeared again.
I have not lost my contact data - as well as Gmail contacts I also have an Address Book backup from about two weeks ago and also the backup created by Cobook about two weeks ago. (Installed Cobook as it looked like a very efficient way of getting to view individual contacts quickly - Quicksilver just isn't finding them at all). I used third party app "Contacts Sync for Google Gmail" to link Address Book with Gmail as it gives you options about what to do for each duplicate card that it identifies.
I then spent a lot of time sorting through the contacts on Address Book, finding duplicates, updating data, etc. with the intention of managing contacts in Address Book from then on, rather than in Gmail. Not all of these changes are reflected in the Cobook backup or Gmail.
My worry is, with Lion being such a god-awful Pig's Ear in so many more ways than this, that this Address Book mess might happen again.
I seem to have spent most of my time over the last month wrestling with the numerous problems that keep cropping up with Lion and getting little to show for it.
WARNING! FOOT-STAMPING WHINGE ABOUT LION - LOOK AWAY AND DOWN TO THE HOWLING FACES - IT WON'T BE ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVEN'T HEARD BEFORE:
I gave up on OSX when I tried Panther - that was dreadful - but was lured back by Tiger, have used Leopard very comfortably for about 5 years, had a very happy couple of months with Snow Leopard and now - this mess that is Lion! I have repaired OSX install permissions and "home user" permissions time and again, TinkerTooled it until I am blue in the face and it seems that every few days I manage to fix something and then almost immediately something else screws up. I can't upgrade to Mountain Lion on this machine and am seriously considering installing or running Linux as these problems with Lion are just never-ending - and then there are all the other stupid changes that have subsequently been sensibly reverted, mitigated or worked around in ML).
I have never bothered much with Address Book or Mail in the past as I have found them too limited. I have used either the Gmail web interface or Thunderbird. However, Gmail has started crashing my favourite browsers (Seamonkey and Firefox), Thunderbird has got just a bit too complicated and I cannot get Quicksilver to play ball with Gmail. The Lion version of Address Book is better than Gmail Contacts and Mail Smart Folders can emulate Gmail filters and labels - a huge improvement. So, just when these apps look good enough to be worth bothering with, they come part and parcel with what I have seen mocked, and rightly, as "Apple Vista"!
Sorry for that but I am about at the end of my tether with it all ;-/
I would be very grateful if anyone can offer any advice about:
1) That strange looking zero bytes file in the Address Book folder.
2) Whether the Address Book debug menu options might be of any help in this situation?
There seem to be lots of people having problems with Address Book in both Lion and Mountain Lion, if not exactly this issue, so maybe the answers will help others too.

ps. In the product list to tick for this question they are grouped so I cannot specify that this is actually nothing to do with the iPhone. I have got a load of contacts on my iPhone too but I am not going to sync them until I have got this issue sorted out.

Could this font be the cause of the problem?
Possibly, since that font is not the one that Address Book uses and there is no method to specify or change the font used by Address Book. You could have recovered your Address Book contacts without syncing, so that could also be part of the problem. You should always make a keep a backup of your Address Book on your computer and in another safe location whenever you make any change to it.
May I ask why you haven't updated to 10.4.11 yet, as it provides various bug fixes and security enhancements?

Play Queue Starting Over After The First 5 Songs

I've been having this issue since using Spotify connect where I'll take a playlist with about 100 songs on it, shuffle it, then after it plays about the first 5 it starts over again at the first one it shuffled. This only ever happens on my andriod device. I noticed that the app does a lot of weird stuff when it's constantly being disconnected and reconnected to wifi whenever the device is in transit from point A to B. I don't get how this is an issue because I'm a Premium member so I have all my usual playlists downloaded for offline use. Okay, here's what I mean about the play queue starting over. Today I pused music using the in-line controls on my earphones, then 2 hours later I plugged them back in and resumed my music with the in-line controls (I never unlocked the screen during this process) and started flipping through tracks using the in-line controls while walking to the bus stop, and after I had flipped through about 7 tracks, the play queue repeated the first track it had resumed playback from. This screen shots shows a duplicate track in the play queue afer it had started over from the last resumed track. Note that I do not have duplicate tracks on this playlist.

How do i start over with my time machine

My time machine has run out of space, and i want to start backing up 3 computers (up from 2), so i think it makes to just start over. How do i do that? Will it impact my Time Capsule's ability to be the main router for my home network (will I have to set that up again too?)? With 3 machines, should I get a 1TB (I have 500 GB)?

Are your backups on the Time Capsule? If so, you have a couple of options:
Erase the TC's hard drive (see To erase everything on the Time
Capsule’s internal disk in #Q5 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule), and let Time Machine start over on all 3 Macs (one at a time, connect via Ethernet if at all possible -- the first full backup will be 2-3 times faster than WIFI).
Connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule's USB port, and back the new Mac up to it, instead of the internal HD. See #Q2 in the same link.

Calling an SP takes over 200% more time over the select statement

As part of my POC converting a SQL Server application over to SAP HANA, I'm find that CALL is taking over 200% more time than calling the SELECT statement directly. The result is that the application that uses ODBC against HANA with CALL statements is taking much more time than SQL Server. I'm finding this for all stored procedure calls in the application. Here is an example:

Expected behavior: The data set for each of the tables is filtered out and then joined. Although the filter is expected to be pushed to each of the joined tables even in your case, but this is worth the try.

Upgraded to iOS 6 and now I can't open anything in the kindle app? I have to say that I have had my ipad3 for 6 months and intensely dislike the problems with using it. Also is there any way of opening more than one screen as it is hopeless otherwise?

I Have had my iPad for 6 months as I cannot access my work emails using windows. I have to say that it is the most unhelpful device I have ever used and although it looks like there isn't an answer for some of the questions I have asked below, I thought I would try!
1) I have upgraded to ios6 and the kindle app will open but crashes and disappears when I try to access a book?
2) is there any way I can open more than one page at a time, as opening one at a time is hopeless?
3) Is there any way you can replicate the right click function on word? As pasting and copying on the iPad is irritating to say the least!
4) why can't my Samsung 11 phone connect to my iPad via Bluetooth? A they can't seem to 'see' each other? I may have turned a setting off when I was recently abroad and didn't want huge roaming charges.
5) Why do the submit buttons on some websites not work and how can I get them to? I never have a problem with windows, but it is often a problem with the iPad.
6) I have several websites which I have built and usually upgrade on the windows desktop, usually through Internet explorer, but I can't access the sites properly on the iPad (I can see them but can't alter them) and when sending emails through the websites they won't show the page and I can't navigate the page (the size of the email page is bigger than the iPad screen, but I can't either shrink the page to size or move the page around as you normally would on the pad, any ideas?
7) finally, when roaming abroad recently, I had no problems using the wifi, but when trying to use the cellular data (using the roaming function) I could not get it to work? The ipad seemed to be connected to the network with no problems, but wouldn't actually update the emails? I tried turning it on and off, but that didn't make a difference. My kindle and mobile phone (both also on 3G ) worked great, it was just (as usual) the ipad playing up.
8) when wanting to alter part of a sentence, I can't always get the cursor in the right place? Sometimes it is simple the wrong line, but often it will only go at the end or start of a word and not where I want it. Is there any way of making it more exact? Again I never have a problem with moving the cursor on windows, either by mouse or on the touch screen function on windows 7. Any ideas? As after pressing the screen multiple times I just want to throw it out of the window!
IT might just be that I don't have the correct settings (I am a technophobe) but I absolutely hate the iPad and only have it for work emails, it is so annoying that I can get my mobile phone and kindle3g to work fine, but always have problems with the iPad. I am sure it could be good (and for reading emails on the go in the uk it is great, as I like the key board) but it just seems to make everything else difficult.

Try rebooting your iPad, that should fix he issue. I that doesn't work, delete the app and re-download it. The Kindle books should all be in he Kindle cloud services and you can get them again. I have an iPad2 w/ Kindle app and it works just fine - no issues.

Page as in a kindle book way? turn iPad to landscape position from portrait position. If, however, you mean open more than one application at a time, then no. And not hopeless, as it takes a bit of time to get used to, going from a desktop/laptop format to tablet format.
3) Is there any way you can replicate the right click function on word? As pasting and copying on the iPad is irritating to say the least!
It's actually fairly easy. Press down on the word, then you can expand by drawing your finger to cover word/sentence/paragraph/page, hit select or select all then it gives you the option to cut, copy, paste, define. If you want to use a word processing app on the iPad, Pages is a good application.
4) why can't my Samsung 11 phone connect to my iPad via Bluetooth? A they can't seem to 'see' each other? I may have turned a setting off when I was recently abroad and didn't want huge roaming charges.
It's the connection on your phone. Samsung Galaxy SII? Android software? What you have to do is go to the phone's settings and connect via wireless, not Bluetooth. Go to System Settings (on phone) and under Wireless and Networks click 'more' and go to the Tethering and Portable Hotspot option. Set up your mobile wifi hotspot, name it though it will probably come up with 'AndroidAP', choose a WPA2 security level and put in a password. Go back to previous screen and turn on 'Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot' box. Then on your iPad in the Settings - Wi-Fi section, it should then recognize your phone for tethering. If it's a Windows Phone 7, I don't know the layout of that software, but presumeably similar.
5) Why do the submit buttons on some websites not work and how can I get them to? I never have a problem with windows, but it is often a problem with the iPad.
Sometimes the issue is with the website design, not all websites are optimized for mobile devices - not just iPad but also Android devices. It happens. They're getting there, but occasionally the page might need a refresh.
6) I have several websites which I have built and usually upgrade on the windows desktop, usually through Internet explorer, but I can't access the sites properly on the iPad (I can see them but can't alter them) and when sending emails through the websites they won't show the page and I can't navigate the page (the size of the email page is bigger than the iPad screen, but I can't either shrink the page to size or move the page around as you normally would on the pad, any ideas?
It depends on what you use to build the websites on the computer. Recommend a free program on the computer called CoffeeCup Free HTML Editor. I don't recommend using IE period; Firefox or Chrome are my choices on Windows machines. I have two websites that I manage, both using this program. I'm assuming that when you mean you can't access the sites on the iPad you mean to update them? Ostensible there are apps to let you do this. What format are the sites? Without seeing what exactly you mean and what you want to do, it's hard to explain.
As for seeing full page while emailing within a site, turn iPad to portrait mode, and try to finger-pinch touch the screen to see if that will bring the fuller page into view. Other option is opening a second tab with same website and just go between tabs to reference material.
7) finally, when roaming abroad recently, I had no problems using the wifi, but when trying to use the cellular data (using the roaming function) I could not get it to work? The ipad seemed to be connected to the network with no problems, but wouldn't actually update the emails? I tried turning it on and off, but that didn't make a difference. My kindle and mobile phone (both also on 3G ) worked great, it was just (as usual) the ipad playing up.
If you were outside the US or Canada, my guess is the problem lies within the SIM card in your iPad. If you were outside North America, there are different band levels - I'm guessing you have a SIM thats locked to a particular provider. Band level frequencies differ per country/continent, so a SIM card that will work in Canada/US will not likely work in UK/Europe/Asia/Australia, etc. you will be able to get your emails again when back on a wifi network. Mobile phone may have a different type SIM card (GSM/HSPA) from your iPad SIM. Also, check your email settings.
8) when wanting to alter part of a sentence, I can't always get the cursor in the right place? Sometimes it is simple the wrong line, but often it will only go at the end or start of a word and not where I want it. Is there any way of making it more exact? Again I never have a problem with moving the cursor on windows, either by mouse or on the touch screen function on windows 7. Any ideas? As after pressing the screen multiple times I just want to throw it out of the window!
Moving the cursor on a sentence is a matter of putting your finger on the screen where you want it. It's exceptionally easy to do. I'm using the Notes app to write this whole segment and I just need to put my finger where I want to change things and presto it's ready for me to change where I want it.
Here's a solution: sell your iPad (after you wipe your data off it) to someone who will appreciate it, and put your money towards the Windows Surface Tablet out later this year/early next year, where you can (reportedly) connect a mouse to it. It will have some of the Windows 7/8 functionality that you're more familiar with, or get a netbook.

Download everything on your computer in iTunes, then sync your iPod to iTunes.
You should be syncing (backing up) to iTunes and your photo app regurally, anyway.

Macbook Pro mid 2012 starting to lag when running more than one program.

Firstly mah specs :
Retina, Mid 2012
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
8gb 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M / Intel HD 4000
OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)
So, i bought this macbook about a year and a month ago and since i bought it everything has run fine, it has always been fast and smooth, until around 2 months ago when it started getting a little laggy in handling more than one program being open. Before this i was able to run Photoshop, Cinema 4D, Second Life and Chrome all at once and recieved no speed decrease what so ever. So i figured that it must just have been a little clogged up maybe, honestly wasnt sure but tried clearing cache, tried freeing up memory with some of the mac memory management tools from the App Store and non of these worked so in the end i backed up what was important and wiped the HD and re installed the OS. Annoyingly i am still having problems, if i have Photoshop open and i am surfing chrome it lags on scrolling web pages or loading links. If i have Second Life open i seem to lag with more than 3 players around me quite badly, even if i put Second Life onto its lowest Graphic Settings i still lag where as before i had this issue i could run it on its highest Graphic Settings and recieve little to no lag what so ever. This happens for most programs that used to run smoothly, if i now open Cinema 4D and try anything else.....the system slows down.
I COULD take this to the apple store and genuis bar and ask them to have a look at it HOWEVER i am back at Uni in 2 weeks and i need the macbook for my studies as i am currently working on a summer project and need it for research, can any of you Mac Wonders out there suggest anything else for me to try. I have checked the HD and it says its not failing and is verified and found no issues with the partition.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.

Autorun only shows the Apple Bonjour service. It started when try to sync more than one iphone over WiFi. I have two iphones and an iPad. I turned off syncing over WiFi and still has high CPU utilization. One of the CPU's is pegged at 100%. It is the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe process.

For the record, I then followed the suggestion of MarcDCMB in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4291206 of just manually restarting the Apple Mobile Device service in Windows services.msc once each time after starting iTunes and the service no longer hogs CPU after that service restart. Not too painful as a work-around, and apparently an effective one, but clearly not a solution to the problem. Again, as above, all the other solutions didn't work for me and I have no conflicting software as far as I can tell. So you'd have to say this Apple's problem.
Also FTR, I am still on the 5.2.0.6 version of the Apple Mobile Device Support MSI and I don't know if that is relevant to this work-around working but my sense is that it is NOT relevant. I'll report back on this thread if I re-upgrade and the problem returns in spite of the service-restart approach.

That's great, but not what we want to do. I've been looking at all the boards for a solution to this and, you are correct. There isn't one - at least not one native to iOS. What I think EricB2 would like, as well as many of us, is the ability to take any audio stream (pandora, tune-in radio, etc.) and stream directly to multiple airplay devices from our iPads and iPhones without having to use the computer. Just walk into the house from the car, hit a button on the iDevice and start listening to the same stream we were listening to in the car on all of our home speakers. I know, this is like science fiction. My own opinion is that it would cut into Apples lucrative iTunes business model and really isn't in their best interest, so I don't think it will be happening anytime soon. Bottom line is if you want to use your Apple devices for whole house streaming, you need a computer and music from iTunes($$). Otherwise it's $$ out of Apples pocket.
