Starting Over & Making Sure Library File is remote

After spending some tine repairing my itunes lirary I have decided to start over and convert my FLAC files to new copies of AAC files.
My two questions are how best to clear out my existing music library (I have 2 x iphones and a ipad but none have music from the library yet) and start over.
I also want the Itunes library files to be kept within the Itunes Media folder which will be on a remote NAS and am not sure how to accomplish this after starting over.
So my plan is...
1. Clear out current Itunes music library
2.Rencode a copy of all of my FLAC files to AAC and place them on a nas. NAS\\Itunes
Thanks so much for any tips!!

I have my music on a NAS, and this is what worked for me. Close itunes. Go to music> itunes and delete everything in that folder. Map a drive to a share on your NAS. Make a new folder on that share called itunes. Open itunes create a new library on your local drive. Once itunes is open go to edit> preferences> advanced make sur the top 2 check boxes are checked. Now click change and browse to your mapped itunes folder on the NAS, click select folder at bottom. Click ok. Now itunes will put everyting on your NAS. Keep the itunes xml,itdb, and itl files on your local machine, or you may have a huge performance hit, especially if there is a wireless connection invloved.

  • Starting Over - Making a functional OS X Server

    Friends, I need some help here.
    I built my OS X Server first as an Advanced Server and frankly it was about as unintuitive as I've ever seen, Novell OES, SUSE Linux, Microsoft were all easier to get the piece parts working. I searched online for books and all of them are either out of date or have extremely poor ratings. I downloaded all the guides from Apple and while nice they are very basic and lack any kind of really useful detail.
    I have a mostly working server now or more correctly again. The web server functions properly and I can again see the groups and users pages. Webmail is broken again as is iCal. It runs on the server or is at least running, but I can no longer connect to it from any client workstations. Wikis and blogs are working, I can connect to the server from the Macs and presume that the server is advertising properly on SMB (no Windows workstations here at this time).
    The frustration is that I cannot send email from the server (it times out constantly, that I cannot depend upon the configuration (earlier today web services wanted only to connect to the server.domain.com addressing. Webmail had been working and now is not for reasons unknown.
    I had hoped to bring the domain in house instead of hosting externally for a number of reasons. Thus far I cannot see doing this due to the ongoing instability of services. I wanted to use OS X server to leverage the incredible success of the Mac workstations, but on a server instead.
    I am prepared to blow the whole thing away and start over again to make a fully functional server. I'd appreciate to hear from anyone who has made this work fully and would appreciate guidance in making this so. Until today outbound mail was my only real concern, but I have not yet turned on podcast or quicktime services. I do not use DNS or DHCP as services since I have a router doing DHCP and am passing DNS info through it. The server IP address is statically assigned as one would expect. Port forwarding has been configured on the Airport Extreme for SSH (works) POP and Secure POP (untested - don't like POP), IMAP (works), web 80 (works), web 443 (untested - had issues trying to make https work on the server). I also set up forwarding for port 587 but don't know if it's even necessary. I admit to not being any kind of expert when it comes to Mail servers
    I find that although Server Admin and Server Preferences are simple front ends, they lack the richness to get deep (or at least that's my perception so far). I also find that changes to one component has an impact on others (working with mail breaks iCal) and this troubles me greatly.
    Thanks to any and all in advance.

    Now I'm getting somewhere, or at least I think I am.
    Your server should have a static ip outside the dhcp range. assign one first.
    Check. Been that way all along.
    then, configure the dns service on the server itself via server admin.
    create a primary zone for your LAN. it can be real (example.com) or an imaginary, non-routable domain (internal.office). i usually stick with a real domain so that clients can access services inside or out via name instead of monkeying around.
    Check outridertechnology.com is the primary zone
    create at least one A record for the server itself. when doing this, server admin will automatically create a PTR record for it. forward and reverse name resolution is critical.
    Check it created a machine record with the server name leopard1 and it's address 192.168.1.51
    with at least that done, enable dns (turn it on).
    Check done
    verify it's working by adding the server's IP as first resolver in the network preferences (system preferences -> network -> active interface -> dns). i usually add the loopback (127.0.0.1) address and the search domain (the domain for which you created a dns zone above, like example.com).
    Check did this. Note now that Safari running on the server can find www.outridertechnology.com when I make the first resolver and search domains 127.0.0.1 and outridertechnology.com but it reports that blogs and wikis are not active. If I go to the web server from a workstation that still only uses the ISP DNS server, I see the wikis and blogs as active. There's probably a step missing by me somewhere.
    then dig to verify the forward and reverse lookup. assuming your server's (server.example.com) at 10.12.14.2:
    dig server.example.com (should result in an answer pointing to 10.12.14.2)
    dig -x 10.12.14.2 (should result in an answer pointing to server.example.com)
    Check from Terminal on the server itself dig leopard1.outridertechnology.com points to 192.168.1.51 dig -x on 192.168.1.51 points to leopard1.outridertechnology.com
    you can also use host, nslookup… whatever you're used to using.
    Umm not sure here. Host reports that outridertechnology.com 's mail is handled by leopard1.outridertechnology.com NSLOOKUP says outridertechnology.com cannot be found, says 127.0.0.1
    then, once that's established, i'd add it as the first resolver for the dhcp client range so that all clients are on the same page. if dhcp is running on the airport, add it there within the dhcp range. add the ISP's dns servers as secondary, tertiary. there's also a section within the dns config area of server admin to assign forwarders. add the ISP's dns server's there. in 10.4 and below, this involved a manual edit to the named config file. of course, you can still edit named.conf and the zone files manually, but server admin may step on your changes later if you add features not available via the gui.
    Have not changed the router or the clients since it appears that something still is not right
    do this and then proceed. i understand you have dns configured externally, but you really need a dns server on the LAN for all this to work.

  • How to 'start over' with music library?

    Hi, Newbie here. Brand new Ipod touch 32G, 3rd gen. Yesterday i setup my itunes account and brought in my music libary, then synced to my ipod. Now i realize I have a LOT of music in my library I don't like and don't want. I want to delete the files from both my computer and my ipod. What I would like to do is delete the files from my computer and then replace the entire music library in itunes and my ipod; in essence I want to start over. I have not put anything else on my ipod yet. What is the best way for me to proceed? Thanks.

    Separate out the songs you want to keep ( as well as anything else you want, videos, etc. . ) into a separate folder.
    Copy it to some place safe and then nuke iTunes which will zap all the stuff you don't want, all the database files and so on (Be thorough, nothing should remain which means the iTunes Media folder goes along with everything else.).
    No re-install iTunes and use the "Add Folder" command to put the stuff you've saved back into iTunes.

  • Any standard way of making sure a file name is valid

    Hi everyone,
    I would like to say thanks to all who participate in this forum because it is one of the most important part of the java community.
    I am having some problems with a desktop application that am workin on at this time. Having a small window that allows the user of the application to use a JFileChooser to choose a directory (Directory only option enabled) where they want to store there file and also a JTextField that allows the user to enter the file name they wish the file to be called, I am having problem when the user enters a file name with characters that are not allowed in a file.
    I was wondering if there is a standard way of validating file names across several platform or does anybody have any tips and tricks for getting around this problem.
    Thanks in advance
    Franklini

    matches() takes in a regular expression- the regular expression in the code snippet above will catch any combination of those characters (one correction though- it should be getName() rather than getAbsolutePath() because getAbsolutePath will always have a : and a \ in it).
    try something like the below code, which will keep prompting until you cancel or put in a valid name:
       while(returnVal == JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION &&
                  file.getName().matches(".*[\\/:*?|<>\"].*") ){
         JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,
                                       "The filename " + file.getAbsolutePath() + " is invalid.",
                                       "Save As Error",
                                       JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
         returnVal = fileChooser.showSaveDialog(null);
         if (returnVal == JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION) {
           file = fileChooser.getSelectedFile();
       }

  • Making sure .vi files are open with the right version

    Hello everyone.
    Here's my situation: I need to have LabVIEW 2010 and LabVIEW 2011 installed in my computer, as well as VI's of each of these versions. Is there any way to have Windows open the .vi file with the corresponding version of LabVIEW? I know LabVIEW 2011 is able of opening VI's from both versions but what I want is to prevent the scenario in which someone opens this file and saves the .vi in the 2011 version by accident, thus preventing me from opening in other computers where only LabVIEW 2010 is installed.
    Any suggestions?

    "We had a similar problem with our software and I just made main.bat -file for the main-VIs/projects in each project.
    content in the bat-file fe.
    "C:\Program File\National Instruments\Labview 2010\Labview.exe filename.vi"
    OR
    "C:\Program File\National Instruments\Labview 2011\Labview.exe filename.vi"
    This way it opens allways in to the right LV-version.
    This tho, doesnt prevent anyone from running your VI without the bat! "
    This seems like a good idea speksih, if one could only retrieve the file version with the same script and then probably hide the actual .vi file so it's not opened by accident....it could work.

  • Error: itunes library file cannot be saved. you do not have enough...

    Last night this started popping up "itunes library file cannot be saved. you do not have enough access priviledges for this operation.". Nothing in my system or in itunes has changed. Anyone know what would cause this? Is it safe to import music into itunes at the moment? Will things not be saved to the library?

    Still not the problem. Tracks are imported by itunes. Tracks are save to HD. Tracks show up in itues library. Close itunes... tracks still on HD, but not in library. No security changes have been made. This is a 500GB HD that is over half full music , all in my itunes library, and now for some reason itunes cannot associate with these new files. No updates have happened, I've rolled back to a system point predating my problem, problem still there.

    I tried reinstalling iTunes and choosing the "repair" button when it comes up in the installation, but that did not help. My iTunes is set to automatically update podcasts when itunes starts. I am running Windows XP Home. iPod Click Wheel 40GB.

  • My files are a mess - how can I start over in iTunes?

    Over the years, my music files have become scattered all over between different locations on my internal drive and various externals. I have tons of duplicates, lost files, and it's just a general mess.
    I would like to do a search for all my music files, and completely start over with iTunes and keep them on my MacBook Pro. I have room on my internal (or would, if they were oranized properly and I got rid of duplicates!) but a lot of the files that show up on iTunes are on an external so of course it will ask me where they are. This is driving me crazy and I want to just scrap everything and start over fresh.
    I have a 1TB external that I can dump them all on while I change over.
    Any suggestions on the best way to do this would be welcome, as well as whether there are programs available that would help with this (or is it just as doab;e without a separate application).
    TIA, Alicia Morgan

    basically, the question is: does iTunes know where all these files are ? or does iTunes show a "!" next to any files ?
    I have tons of duplicates ...

    once you have gotten rid of dupes and located the lost files, you could consolidate your library:
    (a) go iTunes > preferences > advanced and make sure
    o iTunes media folder location is pointing to the iTunes music folder on your startup disk
    o +keep iTunes media folder organized+ is checked
    o +copy files to ... when adding to library+ is checked
    (b) have any external HD holding any of your media files is mounted on your desktop
    (c) go file > library > organize library > consolidate files
    if the option to +upgrade to iTunes media organization+ is available, select that too.

  • Getting old site off the 'net without appropriate files. (to start over with same domain name)

    As a complete novice, I'm not even sure how to start this question...but, I have tried everything and I think I have "lost" my website in terms of bringing in back into DW and changing/updating it.  My backup files on my computer have disappeared and the appropriate files through my cPanel to bring it back to in order make changes aren't there.  The website still functions, but it is outdated for my business needs.
    So, at this point, my question is this; how can I gain control over the domain and start over from scratch.  I don't want what is out there anymore, but without control through the above mentioned devices, is it even possible to build a new website and get the old one off the 'net as it is and still keep the original www.name.com?
    I'm clueless at this point.  Thanks.

    So, at this point, I don't know what is really going on.  My main goal was to get my existing website off the net and put something updated on with the same domain name.  I was successful with what JTANNA suggested, but I don't know what I'm doing with a mirrored site in terms of what my needs are.  I am not against changing the domain name and just leaving this one out there, though I did put a great deal of time into building it.  I would take some further help if anyone has more suggestions, but I'm about ready to move one.
    Thanks for trying to help.
    You will need to sort out the FTP issues because when you have edited your site, you will need to upload it and so FTP details will be required.
    Your first port-of-call to sort this out is to contact your host who can reset the password for you so that you can start all over again.  The alternative, is to give your password/login details to Murray (PRIVATELY) so that he can try from his machine.  When this is done, you can always change the password for your own security.

  • My entire iTunes music library is missing. It's like iTunes reset itself and started over. How can I get my music back?

    How can I get my music library back? When I launch iTunes there's no music. It's like iTunes started over completely and I can't find any of my music anywhere.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
    Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
    See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    In the unlikely event that all the media has been inexplicably and permanently removed from your computer, see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
    When you get it all working make a backup!

  • What is the best way I should restore or start over after a complete meltdown and loss of files?

    In May I moved all of my itunes content (movies, music, podcasts, app, books) to a networked attached storage device.  Long story short, recently I had problems with some content missing/being deleted.  Lacie, the hard drive mfg, told me the public share had become corrupted and I needed to delete it and start over.  Last night I appeared to have had a complete meltdown with the loss of most of my files, over 500gb of stuff.
    Luckily it's backed up (but one backup is now about 2 weeks old) and it's going to take about 2 days to restore.  I have it restoring to my desktop folder on my imac.  I'm concerned about all of the itunes library folders and stuff that are out there.  I'd ultimately like to get it restored back to the external hard drive.
    What is the best method?  I'm restoring just the content, not the various library files.  Should I uninstall Itunes and re-install it to try to start fresh, or just re-add the content?
    I've already wasted a lot of time on this and I'm just looking to avoid more problems.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Anyone help with this?
    I am restoring over 500gb to my local drive after a NAS was corrupted.  I'm very hesitant about putting stuff back out on the network drive again so i guess I may keep it on my local hard drive.  Currently, when I open itunes it has all of my old files remembered (just with exclamation points) and my playlists.  I'd love to keep that intact but point itunes to the correct files in a new location.
    Is it as simple as going to preferences and changing the location of the itunes folder once I have it in place?

  • What do I do with this error message: To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly.

    So I cannot even access the application. It was working fine yesterday and today I get this error message:
    To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly.
    I have changed nothing. All the pictures are there on the computer. Help?!

    Reboot.  Close any programs which open at start-up.  Run Disk Utility (you can type this in the Spotlight search field at the right end of your Menubar).
    In Disk Utility, select your drive from the list on the left, and click "Repair Disk Permissions".  This will take a few minutes, but should be less than ten.
    Reboot.
    Try to open your Library in Aperture.  What happens?

    Well!
    If you have ThunderBolt, I would go with such for an External Working Drive, spinning platter or SSD depending on your budget
    This does not have to be huge just big enough to house your most current Jobs
    Once the Current Job is put to rest I would move it to a larger multi bay hard drive unit, USB or FireWire nothing fancy, no RAID, set up as one single Disk
    This would only be accessed when something is needed from a past Job so the connection does not have to be speedy
    The Drobo would be relegated to Vaults and backups
    You can set up a Vault on the Drobo to back up the External Working Library and then Reconnect it when you have moved the Library over to the other Enclosure
    This has worked for me pretty smoothly for a long while, but I have found over the years that one can not assume all people work in the same manner! :-)

  • I have multiple libraries on an external drive. Somehow all the iTunes library files i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, Media folder, etc disappeared! Only the music files remain. Now when I start iTunes w/option it can't find any of the old libraries!

    Help! I 'm using an old G4 powerbook, Mac OSX 10.5.8, iTunes ver 10. I have multiple iTunes libraries on an external drive. Everything was fine for a while, then all of the iTunes library files, i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, artwork folder, Media folder, etc mysteriously disappeared! Only the music files remain (thank god) So now when I start iTunes w/option key to choose a library, I can't choose any of them because iTunes won't recognize them. Because all the library stuff is missing. So can I re-create the library files? (I don't care if I lose my ratings)
    Or should I create a new empty library on the external drive, then manually move all the music files to the Media folder in the new library?
    I tried some stupid ideas like creating a new library just to start iTunes, then going into prefs and advanced, then under iTunes Media folder location, selecting the location of the old library on the external, to see if iTunes would then find all the music which is still there, but no workee.
    I'm out of ideas, and I searched the archives.
    Help! anyone?

    I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
    is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
    point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
    consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
    The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
    in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.
