Starting Over & Preserving Settings...

Ok I have an XServer G5 w/ a 80GB drive (system) and a 400GB drive (data)
I also have a few external FW drives to use that I can format and use as a temproary storage... When I have "DOWN TIME" and nobody is in the office for the weekend. Here is what I want to do, I would like your best advice as how to do this with out hoseing everything.
The xserver has about a dozen users we are using open directory and also hosting our web site and mail, a mailing list, print server. Originally it was 10.3.x server but was upgraded a while back over the past year we have had odd unexplained issues, such as people for no reason loosing permissions to access files, they have to reboot to somtimes get em back or I have to log in to propagate permissions.
I plan on hooking up a FW drive and using CCC or SuperDuper to backup the startup drive ( for the process I will unmount and remove the data drive for safe keeping)
I plan on formatting the 80GB drive and partitioning it into two volumes Active & Clone... then I plan on using CCC or SuperDuper to move the data back to the "clone" partition. Then Install from sractch A brand new OSX 10.4 Server. Set it up the best way I know how (any advice is appreciated)
Then I need to restore the users/mail/maillist/web etc settings. I want to make this as seemless as possible for users. If I understand things correctly they will only need to provide a new password?
I also have 1 imac that currently has their home directory stored on the server I plan to move their home folder to the imac as now nobody is "sharing" macs they each have their own. Also I have a power book setup as with PHD, I need to make this machine stand alone and not require the server for sync.
I have reviewd the "manuals" but they are poorly written every time I get to the part that I need it says "ask your system admin" I AM THE ADMIN! errrrg.
Please help me as best as you can I would like to do this over a weekend (perhaps in two weeks) Would someone be available to walk me thru this via skype/ichat or phone. I plan to do some of the backup and cloning prior to the event as that part will take a few hours.

Thanks for the reply. I just posted the "corruption" issue under another post. Perhaps I can pick your brain here. It really isn't a major deal, but rather more of an annoyance for an anal person like myself.
When I first installed Aperture 2, it installed with 2 fields that seemed to be default custom metadata fields. I thought it odd to have custom fields that were there from installation, as custom usually means the user adds them. One of these fields was called, "EventName". Yes, there was no space between the two words. When I tried to edit it to add the space, it worked (in the metadata editable area), but instead of having one field in my Metadata Inspector that read, "Event Name", I now had two. Next I tried to delete the custom entry, which worked, only it still left the two fields in my Inspector. They were there, even though they weren't present in the editable area. Basically, I couldn't get rid of them.
This seems like a paltry reason to go through the process of starting over, but stuff like that really bugs me, with "bug" being the key word.
Any thoughts on what might be causing that (seeming) glitch? Any ideas of what to do about it?

To get everything straightened out, I was thinking I should do a delete and reinstall and just start over like it was a brand new computer. I will only loose some usermane and password info and my history and cookies. There is nothing else on the computer that is not on another device somewhere. Does this sound like the right thing to do? I cannot seem to find ways to correct the problems indivdually, though I am sure they are there. If so, how do I do it? Yes, that sounds reasonable.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list.
      Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
        and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process
      has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Open itunes, connect ipod, select what you want, sync.
No need to restore. Just sync. It will erase the current content and replace with the content of the new computer.

If I "Erase all Content and Settings" will I have to start over in Injustice: Gods Among Us?

You can restore from an iCloud backup. I am not sure whether that backup will include saved settings in a game, though I doubt it.

Reset factory settings and start over

My PC won't recognise my iPod any more, and has wiped out most of my songs in a failed sync.
Is there a way of resetting the factory settings and starting over, than just renaming my iPod to the previous name and letting it run a new sync?
Or is there another solution?

It is something of a fix all, but you lose everything on the iPod, so make sure that everything is safely backed up.
If your laptop is relatively new, then you most likely do have USB2/highpower/speed.

Apps are always tied to the ID that was used to purchase them originally. Did you try entering your old password and see if that works?
If you need to sign out of your old account go to Settings>Store>Tap on your ID and sign out. Sign in with the new one.
you can also access your ID in the featured tab of the App Store. Swipe to the bottom of the screen and you will find it there as well.

The spinning "wheel of death" does NOT go away! I've loaded too much stuff on my computer (including the entire Adobe CS6 software) and I want to delete everything on my macbook pro and start over? How do I clean everything up without buying MacKeeper?

I use my MacBook Pro (Late 2009) for EVERYTHING and I have loaded so many apps, even doubles of some, I think!   My computer is running really SLOW and I think it is because I don't have enough memory.
I just installed the new Adobe CS6 and that was a BIG mistake. The spinnning wheel of death doesn't stop! I wish I could load that program on my computer so I can use it "on the go", but I can't stand the spinning wheel!
I want to clean up my computer and get rid of EVERYTHING on it!!     Then, re-install the factory settings to run Lion. I believe this will make the wheel stop spinning.
However, how do I make sure that all of the extra stuff that is attached to the app, ( including all the cache') is deleted too?   I don't want to have to buy MacKeeper!
I am hoping the computer wizards or the apple team can give me an answer on how to clean up everything and start over. I have saved everything on my desktop mac.

1. To delete the catalog, go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Catalogs. Application data is a hidden folder which requires that you enable the setting in Windows that displays hidden files. For this, in Windows Explorer, go to Tools>folder options>View tab>check "show hidden files & folders">apply.
2.To make a new catalog, go to Files>Catalog>new.

(cant seem to get calendars to ever sync right, on my devices, and across to my wifes'....so want to start with a "clean installation")

Settings>icloud, scroll to bottom of screen and tap Delete Account (this disconnects the device from icloud but doesn't delete any data on icloud or on other devices).
If you then want to sign back in using a different ID, do so on the same screen.
I also strongly suggest that you and your wife use different icloud accounts, otherwise all your devices will have the same data on them, same emails, reminders, etc. Most likely not what you want.

How to completely reinstall & start over with Messages?

Messages/iChat/AIM/iMessages has always behaved spotty since I purchased a new HD and installed Mavericks on in a few months ago.
I use Messages every day: have for years, and it's running in the background, 24/7 and I use it for screensharing, teaching other Mac users (both their screen and my screen), video conferencing, even just the audio. It's absolutely integral to my business and life.
And it's really broken currently on my awesome Mac Pro:
Messages don't go through (I get the red exclamation point next to the message)
texts show up on my iPhone 5 but then sometimes they don't. Sometimes they show up on both (which is perfect)
Buddies that I've video conferenced with for years no longer can connect—this is the biggest issue. Even after installing a new Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (ME918LL/A) in an attempt to fix this.
It forgets settings, and it often can't see USB devices (mics, camera, headsets, etc), this is even after I had the bus logic board replaced.
It even changes the font size and font name that I've selected in Preferences: Viewing (this is just totally odd)
Troubleshooting that I've done:
deleted the .plist files in both Libraries
removed all accounts and rebuilt them
Set up my AIM, my iCloud, and a GMail account, just to try and capture all protocols
the logic board hasn't been removed or flashed
I'd like to simply start over. Is there a suggested way to do this?

The .plists that might effect this are the ones in ~/Library/Preferences
I am not sure what your mean by "both".
The Airport Base Station should be using Port Mapping Protocol which works like UPnP in allowing apps to effectively tell the device which port to open.
The Preferences not staying set in the Viewing pane is odd as they are stored in com.apple.ichat.plist with all the other settings (except the Account ones that have their own .plists)
Does the Bandwidth stay set ?
Do Buddy list stay separated if you set it so in the General section ?
Does the Menu Bar icon stay on Display if the Show Status is ticked ?
To reinstall the app needs a complete OS install (Recovery mode)
However this will leave your Home Folder untouched (Same .plists will be involved).
Have you tested in another Mac User account ?

When I get my bookmarks the way I want them on my computer and delete the ones I do not want it gets messed up. I have 4 computers on my account and every time I sync it brings up old book marks. I have deleted all book marks from my computer and set up a new sync account then deleted all book marks on my other computers. Then I set up the new sync account on all the computers and still brings up Book marks. There should not be any book marks because I deleted all book marks from all computers before I set up the new account. I have done this 2 times and it they come back. How can I clear all my accounts and start over???????????

Want to Completely Start Over

Hi,
This is my first post here. I searched around and couldn't find an exact answer.
I use Windows XP. I got an iPhone about 2 months ago, and before that I had never used iTunes before.
I'm a musician and a music lover, so I'm always wanting to transfer music to and from my iPhone. When I first got my phone, I downloaded iTunes and proceeded to create a huge clusterf*ck. It was transferring every single audio file on my computer to my phone, which I do not want to happen.
I must say that, so far, I've found iTunes incredibly non-intuitive and incredibly confusing.
Anyway, what I would like to do is completely start over if possible. And I'm not just talking about uninstalling and re-installing iTunes. (I've already done that probably 5 or 6 times for various reasons.)
I mean that I want to completely restore my iPhone to its factory settings and start completely over with iTunes as if I'd never used it before.
My biggest complaint is that it's a total, f*cking mess. It searched my entire computer for audio files, and so everything (little sketch recordings of song ideas, etc.) on my PC is showing up in iTunes, which I do not want. I only want the files that are in my "My Music" folder to show up, because those files are neatly organized into folders of albums, etc. As it is now, I have this mess of 283 items in the "song" category in iTunes, and most of them are not songs---they're just scratch recordings or whatever (things I only want on my computer).
So ... I know there's a way to bring the iPhone back to factory settings. But is there a way to do this with iTunes? I remember that the first time I installed it, it asked me some things like where I wanted to look for audio files and things like that. But now when I reinstall it, it doesn't do that anymore.
I really hate the iTunes interface, and I've tried several other alternatives. Sharepod seemed perfect, because I would just love a simple drag/drop interface like that. But unfortunately, it won't work properly for me. It won't recognize my photos, my purchased songs, or my voice memos. And it won't work when I try to copy a song from the PC to my phone.
And, of course, iTunes won't let you copy a song from the phone to your computer (does anyone know why?).
I just want a way to do both of those things in an easy fashion.
For the record, here are the alternatives I've tried, and none of them have worked completely for one reason or another:

Copytrans Manager (this works well, but it won't let you copy songs from the phone to the computer)
iFunbox (worked great for me on everything except music)
Is there a way to completely restart on iTunes as well as my iPhone? If I do this, will I lose the apps I've purchased? Or are they always available to me now from the app store to redownload?
I know this is much more of a ramble than a question, but I'm so frustrated at this point.

No one has any ideas on this?

I HAVE A USER ID, A SYNC KEY BUT NO WORKING PASSWORD ; CAN I CANCEL THIS ATTEMPT AND START OVER again.

i followed all the directions e ,mailed to me ,but when i tried to sync my iphone the error message said incorrect password. I then asked for a second set of instructions and redoubled my efforts and still no sucess i tried to reset tghe password but I don't have a sync tab setup under firefox/tools/options. If allowed to cancel the sync key and start over again knowing the pitfalls I have encountered I would be succeswful. i THINK FIREFox is the best system I enjoy using it every day. thankyou

On the iPad tap Settings > iCloud
Toggle Documents & Data off then back on then restart your iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
On the iMac open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Documents & Data then reselect it then restart your iMac.

ITunes Match Songs Keep Starting Over

I've been using iTunes Match since it first released and absolutely love it! However, I've been experiencing a strange thing the last couple of months and it's happening more frequently. I haven't changed any settings or anything - it's an issue that just started out of the blue.
I keep all my music in the cloud and stream it on my iMac. Particularly my playlists. Sometimes, right in the middle of playing a song, it will stop the music and put the song back at the beginning. Out of nowhere! All of a sudden the song will stop, I look at iTunes, and the play marker will be at the beginning of the song, and it's stopped. One particular song I couldn't even get through it because it kept stopping it and I had to start the song over and over until I just skipped it. I thought with the new Yosemite the issue might be fixed, but it's continued from the previous version into this new OS. I've never had that problem before songs in the cloud or playlists in the cloud, but this has happened a number of times over the last few months.
My internet connection is great (50mb download) and it's not cutting in and out. I thought that might be the issue because the songs in the cloud will just stop, as if the internet cut off the song, and then iTunes will put the marker at the beginning.
Any thoughts?

I have the same problem. It seems once a movie or tv show has a problem, it will never "complete" the download. It gets all the way to the end and then inexplicably starts over. Sometimes it says "processing" and then starts over. Frankly, I find there are more quirks with the iPad than my Android tablet. Just saying. Amazon's system, cloud player, and movie rentals blow iTunes out of the water.
