Starting Safari with command-line options
I am an old Unix Hacker who just started with Mac. Since scripting is an important
part of old-school UNIX, I do many things via scripting.
My question is: Is there a way to start Safari from the command line using command-line
options that will allow Safari to open up multiple tabs with each tab pointing to a pre-defined
URL?
Thanks,
msprewitt
Hi,
Type this in terminal,
open http://www.google.com http://www.yahoo.com
It will open the two web pages in two tabs. man open for more option.

How do I run Safari with a proxy on start up by command line?
Hello,
I am using a piece of software called Sahi to perform automated testing of websites. It uses a local proxy to accomplish this task, so it runs the browser with parameters needed so that that instance of the browser is running with the proxy settings. For some reason it's not correctly setup by default with Safari on the Mac. But it has a configuration file where you can set the command line parameters that it runs the browser with.
So when I use Sahi in its default configuration, it doesn't work because the proxy is not configured, and I get an error ( http://sahi.co.in/forums/discussion/4607/sahi-doesn039t-work-with-safari-5-0-1-o n-macosx )
So I need to set the proxy. When I set the 127.0.0.1:9999 proxy in the System Preferences it works. My question is how do I run Safari so that it provides the proxy settings as a command line option?
This way I can add the command line option to the Sahi configuration file so that it runs Safari properly. I don't want to have the proxy settings system wide because I need other programs to work. I don't want to have the proxy settings set for Safari permanently because I also need to be able to run Safari normally outside of this special context.
Any assistance would be appreciated.I should mention this is Safari 5.0.1

How do I restart the SNMP agents with the original command line options?
I'm creating an application that changes the SNMP trap target configuration files and then restarts the SNMP agent. I'm currently working with the mibiisa agent. I want to make sure that I restart the service with the new trap targets but with the original command line options. How can I restart the mibiisa service with the same command line options that it originally loaded with?
It is not "Network Time" that is the problem, but actually "SystemStarter." SystemStarter is an interim kludge to enable the work or the old StartupItems until they can be converted to LaunchDaemons or LaunchAgents controlled by launchd. Launcd calls SystemStarter to launch all the unconverted StartupItems. ntpd is now under the control of launchd directly.
Launchctl is the command to load and unload the plist files, but I don't think it has a mechanism to restart a daemon.
There are start and stop commands in launchctl, but the man page indicates that they are for debugging purposes.
I also imagine you could just kill the ntp daemon and let it restart with new settings. It is most likely set to "keepAlive" so that it will automatically restart. -
Compiling failed with "unrecognized command line option '-Wl'" error
Helllo,
I have here a fresh installation of Archlinux and I fall into troubles with compiling a few of applications from AUR.
The problem is this:
gcc: error: unrecognized command line option ‘-Wl’
It happens for example with bubblefishymod package from AUR. I've never seen this error.
Any suggestion, what is wrong, please?
I have 64bit Archlinux installation, intel core i5, base-devel package group is installed.Seems like a straightforward error message. Read about -Wl in "man gcc" if you want to know more.
In the meantime, removing "-Wl" from the LDFLAGS in the Makefile (I used a sed line in the PKGBUILD) should allow you to compile it successfully. Whether or not it works as expected though, is another matter entirely. Contact the author and get him to fix his Makefile. -
I would like to use Firefox as my browser but want to restrict the configuration options that a user can do. Is there a command line option to start in a kiosk more in which no toolbars are visible including min/maximise buttons so that only the rendered webpage is visible? There is a /wait option for the Windows "start" command to wait for the program to get finished.

Is there a command line option for VNC to automatically launch in fullscreen mode?
I can launch a VNC window from the command line, as such:
open vnc://username:password@hostname
... but I'd like it to automatically start in full screen mode. Is there a command line option for this?
I'm using an old MacMini purely to connect to another Mac over screen sharing, but when the MacMini boots I'd like it to go straight into the fullscreen of the other desktop.
Many thanks!Set the Integer pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.

That will allow you to deselect the tab(s) that you do not want to reopen, but will allow to reopen other tabs.

Command line option to specify Bridge master cache
Please allow a bridge command line option to allow the user to select a specific bridge master cache.
The motivation is as follows: I have written a c++ programme to key-word all of my many thousands of photo projects. Essentially each project is in a separate directory on 8 terabytes of networked disk. Associated with each directory is a set of key words. When the appropriate project is selected, I invoke Bridge to open that directory, possibly with a specific images as the "starting image" for that project. Since the master cache files are split (to accomodate the 500,000 max image count supported by bridge), it would be excellent if I can pass a reference to the specific master cache associated with that directory.
A second value of this option would allow the user to create desk-top short-cuts to invoke bridge using an appropriate cache structure. For example, the properties of one short cut could specify the cache file for the current daily use of the Bridge to process images in progress. A second could point the the cache associated with the historical first 400,000 image archived on the network, and a third could invoke bridge pointing to the cache for the next 400,000 image cache - or whatever grouping the user needs to match his workflow when using Bridge as the central focus for various digital assets..
This type of processing allows the user to conveniently invoke bridge according the the needed work flow when multiple cache systems are required. In addition, the multiple desk-top shortcuts would minimize the "error" of having bridge pointed, by accident/neglect, to the incorrect cache structure.
It would also be valuable to allow the user to display the current number of actual image items in a cache system - either as a "view" or "tools" option. This would allow the user to know when it is time to start a new master cache system. Of course, this can be intependently viewed in windows explorer by the count of files in the 1024 or 256 directories - however maybe the cache structure already "knows" this number instantly. Other statistics could be interesting as well - possibly the number of directories known to the cache (possibly the same as the count of directories within the 1024 or 256 directories). Possibly the number of files cached by file type (jpg, tif, psd, cr2, nef, etc) would be of interest to some folks - however, such things should be user-selectable since such analysis might be time intensive and maybe of no interest.
Of course, I do not know if this is consistent with other uses of Bridge - this request is made based upon my use of Bridge as a still photographer and a few videos I have created.
thank you....

The Library file location is stored in your "iTunes Prefs.xml" file in<pre>%APPDATA%Apple ComputeriTunes</pre>.
Actually, I should say that if you are using a non-default location, there is a key for "iTunes Library Location:1", e.g.:
<key>iTunes Library Location:1</key>
<data>
QwA6AFwARABvAGMAdQBtAGUAbgB0AHMAIABhAG4AZAAgAFMAZQB0AHQAaQBu
AGcAcwBcAFQAZQByAGkAZABvAG4AXABNAHkAIABEAG8AYwB1AG0AZQBuAHQA
cwBcAE0AeQAgAE0AdQBzAGkAYwBcAHQAZQBzAHQAbABpAGIAcgBhAHIAeQA=
</data>
The "data" is a base64-encoded UTF16-LE string that is the folder containing the "iTunes Library.itl" file and "Album Artwork" folder. In the above case:<pre>C:Documents and SettingsTeridonMy DocumentsMy Music estlibrary</pre>
The key/data pair does not exist if you're using the default Library location.
Similary, there is a key/value pair for "iTunes Library XML Location:1" -- except this part always appears, even if you are using the default location. Also, it is the full path to the file itself, not just the directory containing it. e.g.:<pre>C:Documents and SettingsTeridonMy DocumentsMy Music estlibraryiTunes Library.xml</pre>
Since it doesn't appear that double-clicking on the Library file you want to open works, I'm guessing the only way to swap locations is to edit the preferences file -- either directly, or with a script/program. I could probably write such a program in a 1/2 hour or so... I might just do that right now. -
How to pass command line options?
I know that command line options contrary to command line data arguments start with a prefix that uniquely identifies them.
I write an application that will copy files from one folder to another. It should be launched with the syntax as follows:
c:>java my.app.DirectoryScannerConsole
c:>scan ?input ?C:/test/in? ?output ?C:/test/out? ?mask ?*test*.xml? ?waitInterval 60000 ? includeSubfolders false ?autoDelete true
c:>exitSo after launching we have two commands: 'scan' and 'exit'. What should I make in my program to be able to invoke these commands in such a manner?

Edited by: Exaserge on Nov 8, 2008 10:40 AMMaybe try using Scanner to read in the line of input, then break the line into an String array, then comparing the Strings in the array.
Something like...
public static void main(String args[])
Scanner in = new Scanner(System.in);
String line = in.readLine(); //read in an entire line of input
String words[] = line.split(" "); //split that line wherever there is a space
while ( !(words[0].equals("exit")) ) //if they haven't typed in exit
if (words[0].equals("scan")
if(words[1].equals("-input"))
String inputFile = words[2]
//etc.
line = in.readLine();
words = line.split(" ");
}I haven't tried to compile it or anything, so it may not be syntactically correct, but you should get the idea.

Trying to install gcc with Command Line Tools - Mountain Lion
I am trying to update the CUDA driver for an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 card. To do that, I need gcc installed.
It appears I have not been able to install gcc, and I need help doing this.
I am a newbie to both Terminal commands and to updating CUDA drivers, so please bear with me.
I am running Mountain Lion (10.8.2) on a dual quad core Mac Pro (mid 2010 model).
I have been following the guide here:
http://docs.nvidia.com/cuda/cuda-getting-started-guide-for-mac-os-x/index.html
To install gcc w/o having to install Xcode (I don’t need all of Xcode and so don’t want it installed), I downloaded the “Command Line Tools (OS X Mountain Lion) for Xcode – November 2012” from the Apple Developer Downloads page:
xcode452cltools10_86938211a.dmg
I also downloaded the “Mac OS X CUDA 5 Production Release” from the NVIDIA Developers Download page:
cuda_5.0.36_macos.pkg
I installed the Command Line Tools, and then installed the CUDA 5 Release (driver, toolkit, samples). Both installed successfully.
To verify that gcc was installed, I entered the Terminal command (the guide above says this is how I check):
/usr/bin/gcc –-help
The resulting message was:
i686-apple-darwin11-llvm-gcc-4.2: –-help: No such file or directory
i686-apple-darwin11-llvm-gcc-4.2: no input files
I take it this means I did not successfully install gcc.
Please tell me what I am doing wrong.
NOTE: The steps below may not be of interest to you, since they are steps to verify the CUDA driver was updated (once gcc is successfully installed).
But I included them in the post, in case they are helpful..
I went to “Define the environment variables”.
I entered the command
export PATH=/Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-5.0/bin:$PATH
I got no message
I then entered the command:
export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=/Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-5.0/lib:$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH
I got no message
To verify that the CUDA kernel extension is loaded, I then entered the command:
kextstat | grep -i cuda
I got this message:
123 0 0xffffff7f81e69000 0x2000 0x2000 com.nvidia.CUDA (1.1.0)
I then checked the CUDA Toolkit version by entering the command:
nvcc –V
I got the message:
nvcc: NVIDIA (R) Cuda compiler driver

Built on Fri_Sep_28_16:10:16_PDT_2012
Cuda compilation tools, release 5.0, V0.2.1221
To change the directory, I then entered:
cd /Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-5.0/samples
Then to compile the samples, I entered:
make
The resulting message was:

To run the binaries, I changed the directory by entering:
cd /Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-5.0/samples/C/bin/darwin/release
and then entered
deviceQuery
I got the message:
-bash: cd: /Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-5.0/samples/C/bin/darwin/release: No such file or directory(1) When I typed in the command

Thread model: posix
gcc version 4.2.1 (Based on Apple Inc. build 5658) (LLVM build 2336.11.00)
Does this say I successfully installed gcc? 4.2.1 is the latest version?
If I have successfully installed the latest version of gcc, then my problem lies with the installation of the CUDA driver.
If your command worked, then the NVIDIA "CUDA Getting Started Guide" doc I referenced above, which I am following, is just incorrect.
(2) I then went through the same steps as above, and got the same responses, until I got to the "make" command. This time I entered
make clean
And I got the response:

[SOLVED] gcc: error: unrecognized command line option '-V'
Hi.. this is my first post but I always read the forum to solve my problem! ;) thank you to all!!!! sorry for my bad english in advanced...
This is my problem:
I have Archlinux x86_64 with Gnome (last version).
I try to install the driver for my printer epson sx218 but when I compile the bash show:
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
now, I see the config.log file and I see the line:
gcc: error: unrecognized command line option '-V'
my makepkg.conf:

I updated the PKGBUILD to remove the line that says 'gcc -V >&5' from the configure file
libtoolize
sed -i 's/gcc -V >&5//' configure
chmod +x configure
but it still doesn't build:

Windows NT service command line options?
Hi all
Is it possible to start the Weblogic 5.1 (SP8) NT service with the following
command line options:
-Xnoagent
-Djava.compiler=NONE
-XDebug
-Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,address=<port>,suspend=n
If so, how?
Many thanks in advance
CraigThere is a tool in one of the MS kits that allows you to take a command line
and make it into a service. Use that.

Why can I not find "command line options" in FF help?
I can't find any information in the knowledge base on windows command line options for Firefox. I actually had to go to "http://kb.mozillazine.org/Command_line_arguments" to find this information. This seems like a fairly common piece of information FF users would want to know. At least, it's not extraordinarily rare.
You have out-of-date plugins with known security issues. You should update them.
* Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 10.3
* Next Generation Java Plug-in 1.6.0_21 for Mozilla browsers (new security update releases 10-12-2010)
#'''Check your plugin versions''': http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
#*'''Note: plugin check page does not have information on all plugin versions'''
#'''Update Shockwave for Director'''
#*NOTE: this is not the same as Shockwave Flash; this installs the Shockwave Player.
#*Use Firefox to download and SAVE the installer to your hard drive from the link in the article below (Desktop is a good place so you can find it).
#*When the download is complete, exit Firefox (File > Exit)
#*locate and double-click in the installer you just downloaded, let the install complete.
#*Restart Firefox and check your plugins again.
#*'''<u>Download link and more information</u>''': http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Shockwave+plugin+with+Firefox
#'''Update Java:'''
#* Download and update instructions: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Using+the+Java+plugin+with+Firefox
#* Removing old versions: http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/remove_olderversions.xml
#* After the installation, start Firefox and check your version again. -
Split PDF by pages using command line options
Hi,
I am after a product to split a PDF file by pages / bookmark using command line options. It would be good, if the product comes with functionality to call from VB/.NET SDK.
I googled and came across many products, out of these following looks good. Has anyone used this. Please suggest me.

Launch executable with command line arguments
I have a programmer that I need to launch in my cvi code. I tried the system command and lauchexecutable command but cannot get the programmer to lauch correctly. If I run it from the command prompt or create a windows shortcut it works fine. Here is the shortcut I created:
C:\TPD\SAVS20P3\asix\up\up.exe /e c:\tpd\savs20p3\q33.hex/erase /q /p
I'm trying to run the up.exe software with /e c:\tpd\v20_hex\v20.hex /erase /q /p as the command line paramters.
I tried the following code which created the above path with command line
strcpy(filename,"C:\\tpd\\savs20p3\\asix\\up\\up.exe /e c:\\tpd\\savs20p3\\hex_ee\\"); ///e c:\\tpd\\savs20p3\\hex_ee\\"");
strcat(filename, hfile);//hex file name will change dynamically
strcat(filename, "/q /p");
I then tried LaunchExecutable(filename) and system(filename). The system functions gives an error. Its trying to lauch the /e c:\tpd\v20_hex\v20.hex file
any suggestions. I beieve its a simple syntax error.Well, apart evident typos in the code you posted, which is not creating the command line you stated, I can only think that before "/q" you should add a space to separate the option from the filename.
This code should create the correct command line:
strcpy (hfile, "c:\\tpd\\v20_hex\\v20.hex");
strcpy (filename, "C:\\tpd\\savs20p3\\asix\\up\\up.exe /e ");
strcat (filename, hfile);
strcat (filename, " /erase /q /p");
Proud to use LW/CVI from 3.1 on.
