Starting up from installation disk/filevault 2 problems

I'm trying to get filevault 2 going on Lion. When I do I get an error message telling me I need to reformat my disk and reinstall Lion. I have tried running disk repair, that has identified I have a problem with my disk being corrupted. Disk repair has instructed my to reboot with an installation disk in order to repair it. However, I have installed Lion already and am therefore unable to create an installation disk. I have also tried a number of times restarting using "command-R", but this does not work either. I've also tried using a Snow Lepoard installation disk, which didn't work.I was previously using PGP encryption with Snow Leopard, I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I decrypted my hard disk and uninstalled it before upgrading.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

First, I'd expect booting from the installation disk to take a long time.
I don't agree. I have never seen it take nearly as long as described above, nor had the screen go black for ten minutes. When I boot from the Mac OS X install disk on any of my Macs, it takes maybe a couple minutes. Longer than when booting from a hard drive, yes, but 10 minutes is not reasonable.
Based on the description above, I would guess that either the install disk is bad or the hardware is bad. Either way, a trip to the Genius Bar would probably be recommended.

    In Disk Utility it says that to test the start up disk, boot from the OS X Installation Disk, then open Utilities and Disk Utility. You can't. You can only re-install the operating system (placing the existing system in a folder called, 'Previous System').
    I did run the Apple Hardware Test (okay), but I don't think that's the same as testing the start up disk.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Yes you can.
    After booting from the Tiger install disc, select your language and at the next screen (Installer window), select Utilities > Disk Utility from the Installer menu bar.

    I ran into another problem: The USB cable I was using for my external backup disk was not reliable.  I kept getting "disk ejects" at various points during migration.
    I bought a new "2.0 certified" cable and it worked fine.  The first two attempts resulted in re-installs.
    I'm happy to report that after the 3rd re-install of ML everything appears to be OK.
    I disabled TM and keeping my last b/u offline for a few more days to be safe....

  • Maverick upgrade issue : OS X cannot start up from this disk

    Hi all, everytime I try to upgrade to Maverick for my new mackbook air, I got this problem 'OS X cannot start up from this disk' (MACOSX). I tried deleting files to get more space, repairing disk and determine that it is not time machine issue, but to no avail.  I have 58 gb free space on my 128 gb SSD.  Can anyone help ? It is really frustrating.  I am not sure what is the other disk called OS X install ESD which is 5.42 GB total.

    Removing an app or bootloader like rEFIt or OS such as Linux does not ensure that the drive is back to where it was before you installed these programs.
    Even having a partition for TechTools eDrive will cause problems.
    First I would run DU and check/repair your HD and then run a file permission verify/repair and zap the PRAM.
    I would then suggest backing up Tiger and Linux with clones and completely erasing the HD using the full (not quick) erase and then installing Leopard and migrating your Tiger material back.

      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

    I have a 2008 MacBook Air which runs Leopard. I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard and then Lion. I have the Snow Leopard family pack disk and try to do the install but it say 'Mac OS X cannot start up from this disk' and shows a yellow triangle with a !
    I went to the genius bar and they told me to put the Snow Leopard disk in the superdrive and restart holding down C and it would then work - but it did not. I also saw on a forum about using disk utility and partion and resizing the partition then putting it back as it was originally and then re trying but I get the same message.
    Anybody got any ideas?

    The extract from that article below worked for me.
    Note when I first resized the partion (comment above) I did not 'apply', this time I did and then resized back to the original full size and hit 'apply' again. Although when the install starts it shows the size of the partion to be the smaller (temporary) size, it is not and the install completes with no issues.
    Boot from the Snow Leopard DVD and select your language. Then launch "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities" menu and perform the following steps:
    Select your boot device (the device above the boot volume name), and select the "Partition" tab.
    Resize the partition by selecting the volume name in the rectangular volume representation and drag the bottom-right corner of it to change its size.
    Click "Apply" to change the partition's size.
    Revert the change by dragging the same resizing corner back to the bottom, and click "apply."
    After this is done, quit out of Disk Utility and try installing Snow Leopard again. Since you are booted from the Snow Leopard DVD you should be able to continue immediately without having to reboot your system.

  • Unable to erase & install from installation disk

    Somehow my macmini snow leopard software bit the dust (started with EyeTV corrupting I think) so after pursuing disk repair and other options I tried doing a fresh installation but accidently used an upgrade DVD of Snow Leopard rather than an original installation disk. Install failed. I pulled out my installation disk and tried holding down the C key to boot from disk. The best I get is the whirring grey circle, but I can't seem to get a disk boot up. Happy to do an erase and install on the hard drive - if I can get to it.
    Any suggestions on how to force an installation DVD boot up apart from holding the C key down?
    All replies appreciated.

    Both my iMac and MacBook Pro 13' went down on 13th April - and would not reboot - both had identical failures - which from probability should be extremely low - unless it is due to the same software problem.
    After a number of attempts to reinstall 10.6, recovery of my time machine latest backup - all of which failed - just now recovery from time machine to March 30th date with 10.6.2 (just before 10.6.3 upgrade was installed) - finally worked on my laptop. I am going to try it on my iMac desktop tomorrow.
    I think your problems are linked to 10.6.3 update as I am convinced - both machines failing
    identically around the same time in the same fashion due to same software corruption seems greatly unlikely. I see that others are having problems with mouse etc after 10.6.3 update.
    Looks like 10.6.3 update requires a big fix !!

  • MiniMac won't startup from installer disks

    I've got a miniMac 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB, currently running OS X 10.4.11. Permissions have been repaired, but Disk Utility reports a problem (Invalid Record Count, The underlying task reported failure on exit). But I can't get the Mac to start up from ANY of 3 different installation disks while holding down the "C" key. One of the disks (10.4.2) is a grey one that probably did not come with this miniMac, but it also won't start up with a black Tiger installation disk (10.4.6), nor from a white Snow Leopard upgrade disk. None of the disks show up in the Set Startup Disk window either. Yet they all appear normally on the desktop and I can access the files on them okay.
    And, in further testing, I now find that I am unable to reset the NVRAM on this computer (holding down option-command-P-R). The computer restarts, beeping only once, as though the keys were never depressed. And trying to start up in the Startup Manager (holding down Option) also fails, as does trying to run an Apple Hardware Test (holding down D). It's as though there are no keyboard inputs...except I can type on the keyboard without difficulty. (We were using a wireless keyboard and mouse on this computer, but I've removed them and their wireless transmitters from the system and connected standard Apple-issued keyboard and mouse for the purposes of testing.)
    Any suggestions?

    I located two additional installer disks, both clearly labeled for use with miniMacs. One is a 10.3.7, the other 10.5.6, but neither of them would mount as a startup either. And now there's a bigger problem -- when I tried the 10.5.6 disk, it did LOOK like it was running as a startup disk (got the language selector), but it would not allow repairs to the hard disk, only verification (Repair button was grayed out). And now, when I try to restart, the Mac gets as far as the Apple logo, spins the daisy a bit, then shuts down. The installer disk is still in the Mac and I can't eject it, and can't start the Mac up at all.
    And no, holding down the "T" key doesn't do anything (but I do have an iMac running Snow Leopard and connected via Airport).

    My question is this: my original installation disk-set is O S X 10.3 . However i have updated to OS X 10.3.9 via the internet in several steps... Once an update to 10.3.?, then 10.3.8 and fianally 10.3.9.
    Can i still use the 'disk utility' 'repair disk' procedure from the original disk which is only 10.3 , if i have updated the OS to 10.9 via the internet ? If not, how do i do a 'repair disk' procedure from disk utility ?

    First of all, Welcome to the Discussions!

    Not to fret, but I would return to your HD>Applications>Utilities>DiskUtility and repair permissions from there. This should have updated permissions that will take care of the new permissions that need to be set for the update increments in the OS since your initial 10.3 install.
    As for the symptoms you are seeing, ie. no startup chime, black screen for seconds and hum I would return to the Disk Utility on the install disk #1 and run Repair Disk. Report back any errors it finds.
    Does your computer have a Apple Hardware Test CD? If so you may wish to run this to check for any damage it will report.
    As for Anacron, CacheOutX, PreferentialTreatment what features of these do you run? Clearing the Caches with CacheOutX for example should only be run for troubleshooting and not general maintenance of the OS.

  • Computer freezing for hours while repairing from installation disk

    My computer has been running slow so I ran disk utility and it said something was corrupted and I needed go through the repair process through my installation disk (snow leopard).  It went through and did the repair disk fine.  I went and did repair permissions and after a couple of minutes it froze.  I could move the mouse, but it had that spinning wheel and wouldn't let me click on anything.  I shut it off with the power button.  That was last night.  This morning I started my computer, and tried repairing the permissions without the installation disk.  I was hoping whatever needed to be repaired from the disk was done so already.  It said it would take 18 minutes, and 90 minutes later, it still wasn't finished.  I stopped the repair and restarted through the disk.  It has now been two hours and it has frozen at the same spot but this time the cursor is normal.  It says "open error 1: operation not permitted...dingDocumentView.nib/keyedobjects.nib" and then the next one, the one it freezes on, is "permissions differ on applications/system...should be -rwxrwxr-x, they are -rwsrwxr-x."  I can't read the rest since it is still frozen (I'm on someone elses computer right now).  Any ideas on what to do?  My apple care has run out and my only problem right now is that it is running slow, so I don't think I would bother getting it professionally repaired, but maybe my computer is dying?

    Others have (in the Mac Pro forum) noticed this bug in Disk Utility on the Intel version install disks. Your easiest fix would be to reinstall OSX on you Macbook disk, boot it, mount the disk image from the USB drive, and use the Migration Assistant to copy over all your accounts and data files.

    I can't start up from my Mac OS X 10.4 install disk. I need to to do some possible disk repairs. When I follow the directions for starting form another disk, I fail to get the DVD as a start-up option. It only shows me the MacHD, which is my computer. One set of directions says hold down the option key, the other says hold down the C key. I've tried both.
    Is there something I don't know about that could be interfering with the other start up option.

    I am trying to upgrade the OS in a G4 iMac, the OS disk is recognized, am asked to restart, but it will not restart from the OS 10.5 disk.

    Will it boot from the install disc that came with the G4?  If so, run
    Disk Utility
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
          Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
    After that, reset the PRAM  and see if that helps.

    I did a clean install of lion now I (of course) need to install ilife again. I'd like to install it from the mac app store instead from the installation disk but that proves impossible. Is there a way to install ilife from the mac appstore instead from the installation disk?

    It happen the same to me.  I had a lot of problem after i upgrade from snow leopard to Lion and decided to do a clean install.
    Before that i did a time capsule back.
    After the clean install i didnt had my ilife apps that i had presintalled when i bought my mac.
    So i was wondering if they can do it in a service center or just simple download them from the app store.
