Starting up in Unix

Hello all. So my white Macbook will only start up in Unix, and says the following:
bad system call
responding too quickly - throttling
more failures will cause job removal
Macbook - I have no name
Now, I am able to start up in OS X using Safe Boot, but I'd really like to be able to listen to music and do all the other things Safe Mode doesn't allow. If anyone has an idea of how I can get my computer to start up normally, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam

Not sure. I've seen people have the trouble but there's never really any common thread between them. Make sure you go to System Preferences->Startup Disk-> and make sure your OSX volume is selected.
I guess it's just one of those anomalies assuming it doesn't happen often or without using the keystroke to invoke it. At least you can get out of it now.

  • Help!  My MacBook is starting up in Unix!

    Today I was completing my software updates, and was installing the security update. It asked me to restart my computer, and when I did, it started up in Unix. I am able to start up in safe mode, but when I restart it goes back to unix. I had this problem 3 other separate times (while installing the firmware updates), but it always managed to resolve itself.
    In unix it says: mDNSResponder, throttling, respawning too quickly, etc.
    It then tries to restart...says the same thing and finally ends with
    MacBook_I have no name!
    Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions?
    It would be greatly appreciated!

  • Start Java application at system start up linux/unix

    Hi,
    I am working on a application, which needs to run as a background process in linux/unix without the intervention of the user.
    Please give me the details procedure how to make it as background process.
    thanks

    you can make any process a background process by adding an amperstand
    for example:
    java -cp $MyClassPath myAppClass &
    If you want to run it automatically at startup
    you'll have to write a little script which is executed at startup
    and contains a line as above.
    The scripts exectuted at startup are usually located at
    /etc/init.d
    You can use one of those scripts as starting point for your own script.

  • Starting weblogic in unix using "root"

    We used to have an instance of weblogic user domain which the user used to start,

    start it.
    [Q] Which files will need to be owned by root in order to do this ?
    [Q] How can user "root" start the domain, yet the process remain owned by the

    Given that in unix one doesn't want root owning the process, with all the

    it entails.
    I'd appreciate if you can email me any tips you may have on the subject as

    HEllo,
    You can use the 'post-bind' option to start WLS as root, and switch to
    an user when WLS is started. This is the safest way.

    #echo $SAPINST_JRE_HOME

    You have set wrong environment variables...
    Correct it as follows ( set in .profile):
    # export SAPINST_JRE_HOME=/opt/java1.5/jre
    # export JAVA_HOME=/opt/java1.5
    Also includes $JAVA_HOME in PATH variable;

    In X-Manager session you can also set it in running terminal session and then execute "sapinst" in the same window.
    It will work.

    Hi
    I came accrossed this kind of problems before, when I checked the log, I found almost the same error you mentioned and the BI Preenstation services is not started up.
    As my experience, there would be something wrong with the presentation catalog, I changed the catalog to samplesales and it is ok, so I redeploy the specific catalog and then it is ok.
    hope this can help.

  • PrintWriter has started to use unix style linebreaks.

    Hello,
    I was running some text files generated under linux through a my Java program under Windows XP. Ever since then any program I write or run in Windows that uses PrintWriter will print to a file using unix style line breaks, ie. if I look at it in notepad everything appears on one line with little squares instead of line breaks. Does anyone know why Java won't use the dos line breaks anymore ?
    I remember seeing someone else who had this problem but I never found out if and how they fixed it !

    All I'm doing is putting a string into PrintWriter.println():
    String fred = "Hello !";
    String jim = "Wheee !";
    PrintWriter out = null;
    try
    out = new PrintWriter(new FileOutputStream("Stuff.txt"));
    catch (Exception x)
    System.out.println("Could not open the file Stuff.txt.");
    return;
    out.println(fred);
    out.println(jim);The file then contains
    HelloWhee !
    with a unix line break between the Hello and Whee !
    This was not happening untill I ran a file with all unix line breaks through the program. The code did not change. Recompiling made no difference. Now ALL programs that us PrintWriter are doing this.

  • Help! Starting up in terminal/Unix

    When I start up my G5, instead of starting the OSX GUI, it seems to be starting up in Unix - ie I get a black screen with BSD/Darwin, asking me to log on. When I do, I get 'Welcome to Darwin', but I don't know how to start up OSX!
    I have not chosen any different startup options or anything and am at a loss to know how to actually get it to start up in a way I can use. I don't know enough about the Unix side of things to work like this or even start up the GUI. Could someone let me know how to get it working??

    Update: Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. As it was asking me to log in when I normally log in automatically, I thought it was something to do with my account.
    Anyway, from reading what I could find about this, I thought that maybe it was starting up in Single User mode. However, this does not appear to be the case. I have tried Single User mode, and this gives quite a lot of text on the screen at startup giving system information. The other times I just get the text 'Darwin/BSD (Macintosh.local) (console)
    Also, I am unable to reboot. (If I try the reboot command, it says 'operation not permitted') and the only way I can restart is by holding down the power button.
    I have tried resetting the PRAM, starting up from the install CD to repair disk permissions etc and also starting in safe mode, and none of these has made a difference. Any more ideas?

  • Help! After Security Update, Mac starts in UNIX!

    I'm really stuck with this one. I installed the new security update last night, and when the computer restarted, it started up in UNIX console mode; Said "Welcome to Darwin!" I don't want to go to Darwin!
    I don't know anything about the UNIX system, so all I've done is restart a few times, and tried a few things from the Missing Manual: "safe mode" restart didn't work, I even restarted into "root user"? (sorry, I know I sound stupid) and tried a disk repair using "fsck." It says my disk is fine. I don't have a second hard drive.
    I'm willing to reinstall Tiger, but how can I get the CD in the darn machine from UNIX?

    Veronica
    what is the UNIX command for restart or shutdown? Is there a page somewhere that lists commands?
    Um, reboot and shutdown -h now. You can read all about them with man reboot and man shutdown. You need to know the name of a command before you can access its documentation in the man page. There are ways to get a list of commands, but they are not at all helpful.
    If you follow my instructions, you won't need any commands other than the ones I post, but by all means read what each one does by looking at its man page.

  • Trigger Unix Program from a stored procedure

    Is it possible to start a Unix program as a background OS process from a stored procedure?
    In fact I want to call a stored procedure which starts a Unix process. After the termination of this process get the results of the programm (a text file) using UTL_FILE package from the stored procedure and produce an HTML document based on the output of the started process using the htp package.
    Thanks, JV

    Whats the best way to start a host (Unix) program from a stored procedure or trigger without having to wait for a response from the program (i.e start it and forget it )The BEST way depends on your operating system and version of the Oracle database. If you are at Oracle 10g or higher, I would certainly suggest using dbms_scheduler. In 10gR2 you can set a program to execute on receipt of an event, and the trigger or stored procedure can be the cause of the event.

  • Automatic stratup of oracle at Unix Solaris reboot

    I want to start automatically oracle when I reboot sun solaris. I did follwoing.
    1-I modifed the /var/opt/oracle/oratab and my entries are set Y
    2-In /etc/init.d I created dbora script.
    3-I made follwoing links
    # ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc0.d/K10dbora
    # ln -s /etc/init.d/dbora /etc/rc3.d/S99dbora
    After that when I rboot the sun box, it did not started oracle automatically. I run the dbstart script from unix, and i got error something about missing init.ora file. My oracle is 9.2.0. I browsed to $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory and listed its contents. I found that there was spfileSID.ora file. I copied the spfileSID.ora to initSID.ora. Now I tried to run dbstart script from unix, I got ORA-01031: insufficient privileges error. I switched the user from root to oracle and run dbstart again and this time it started the databases. So now dbstart was working from unix. Now rebooted the unix box, but with reboot the oracle did not strated. Any body has an idea how I can make my oracle to start automatically with unix reboot. What I am missing here. Thanks

    Show us your dbora script.
    started oracle automatically. I run the dbstart
    script from unix, and i got error something about
    missing init.ora file. My oracle is 9.2.0. I browsed
    to $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory and listed its
    contents. I found that there was spfileSID.ora file.
    I copied the spfileSID.ora to initSID.ora. Now IWell, the reason for not starting is that the example script dbstart is looking for a pfile (PFILE=${ORACLE_HOME}/dbs/init${ORACLE_SID}.ora) while nowadays we should be using spfile. Perhaps copying over init.ora with the binary spfile.ora is not the best way to go.
    dbstart was working from unix. Now rebooted the unixbox, but with reboot the oracle did not strated. AnyAny output from script called during "boot up" e.g. a log file from dbora?

    Since kill is a built in shell command, you need to

    because there is no executable called kill in unix.Wrong.
