Starting up the ipod...
Hi everybody,
Is it normal that the ipod needs a few seconds to power up after several hours of non-usage? It does nothing for about 3 secs, then displays the Apple-logo on unlit display for approx. another 2 secs and goes to normal operation. Does that sound ok to you?

This is exactly what the message says: iTunes could not back up the iPod "austins ipod" because a session could not be started with the iPod.Try connecting your ipod to another computer and sync only 1 file or song just for isolation purpose only to see if it'll sync.
If still not syncing, then porbably you may have a bad iOS installed in iPod which is hard to see if it has a problem because you said nothing's wrong with iPod. I just saying is, it MIGHT have a bad iOS.
If you are unable to do a restore, put your ipod in DFU mode, then connect to iTunes and iTunes will detect your ipod in restore mode. Press shift key (PC keyboard) then click the restore button on iTunes. I hope you have your copy of IPSW file for restoration purposes. -
A session could not be started with the ipod
My ipod touch 3 won't sync. I get a message that says "itunes could not back up the ipod "xxx" because a session could not be started with the ipod." I tried the recommendation of going to edit-->preferences-->devices and deleting the 'back up' file, but there IS no back up file. I've updated my security software. I've run the diagnostic for syncing and it said it passed. I've shut off and restarted my ipod. Not sure what else to do. Don't really want to restore to original settings.
I had this problem and found the solution (for me anyway). After looking in Logs I found a lot of "could not create file in All Users/Lockdown". On this XP computer it is here (and hidden):
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple
So I moved the files in the Lockdown folder out of there. Then I got another error about the "pairing record missing" and searching that, found to move the .plist files out of the Preferences directory (all of the above with iTunes shut down i.e. not running of course). These were located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Joanne\Application Data\Apple Computer\Preferences
Then I launched iTunes and all was well again. Maybe you can just delete the .plists out of Preferences, I dunno.
Hope this helps you or anyone else searching on this somewhat maddening problem. I encountered the trouble upon updating iTunes to 10.5 and then trying to sync my iPod Touch v4.3.1. The backup has to work of course before I can update to iOS 5.0. -
My ipod won't sync to my itunes. Will let me charge it but won't let me sync anything. Really not sure what to do or where to start or anything!
Follow these instructions to completely remove Apple software

If you have 64bit Vista or Windows 7, look for the seperate download of iTunes for that further down the page.
Once installed, use the Apple Software Update under your Start Menu to fully update all Apple components.
Your content will remain on the drive in the Music > iTunes Folder, nothing is deleted.
You should be making backups of your content regularly, either through iTunes or via copying the iTunesFolder in your Music folder to a external drive.
Windows is notorious for having "other" issues that make it unstable, we as volunteers helping others can't always resolve those issues. -
When synching by 4th gen ipod touch it skips the first step - backup-, does steps 2 through 5, then I get a message the ipod could not be backed up because a session could not be started with the ipod. How do I fix this? Do I have to restore my ipod? Will all my apps be erased?
You have to have an internet connection, either wireless or through a computer with iTunes. When you choose Software Update you can only update to the latest version for your iPod Touch, iOS 6.1.6

I get a message when downloading video to the Ip[od: "I tunes could not back up the Ipod, because a session could not be started with the Ipod." What does this mean? What can I do? I cant put in any video. HELP!
I get these issues too, Even with a restore?
I work around it, (and would appreciate feedback on if this works for everyone) by :
Right clicking device in iTunes and selecting "backup", I then get the error; I quickly "ok" the error, then select "backup" again, then I often get the error a second time, but on the third attempt (in very quick succession) of selecting backup, the task initiates, and completes successfully!
Exactly the same for a restore!

When attempting to connect my IPOD touch to Itunes I get the message: IPOD cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started. Also, the IPOD is not shown as a device.

I often get this error but I just ignore it, it doesn't actually stop me from syncing stuff.
However, what I have just found out is that it does stop me from updating my iPod touch to software 4.1 So I need a fix!
Help!It's not AVG that's causing this, of this I am nearly 100% sure. I'll wait for a reply from Apple (who I emailed), before I do Anti-Virus stuff.

This is a new problem for an IPod Touch I have had for a year. The IPod is hooked up by cable and appears in ITunes. I can examine all the content on the IPOD and I can click "sync". It goes through to Step 7 and then the error messages occur. First "a session could not be started with the IPod" and when that dialogue box is closed, the message "a connection could not be established to the IPod."

I recently received an Ipod nano 3rd generation, which I use to listen to audiobook in my car. Every time I leave the car, I stop the Ipod and take it with me. When I return to the car and start up the Ipod, it does not pick up where I left off in the book. Any suggestions?
It could be that the CD player will only playback "Redbook" CD's from the previous position.
And starts mp3 type CD's from the beginnig.
However.. it's not Logic related.

How do i get the ipod to mount in itunes, it is seen by disk manag. not exp
ok i have worked on this piece for the last 7 hours and to no avail. I've tried the 5 r's five times, I've copied the usbinf.inf driver to the windows dir, even though it was already there. I've tried to get the explorer to recognize the device, no dice, (although it does show up in the management directory as a disk drive with an actual "ipod" label. I've changed the disk name to "M:" and that didn't work. Formatting is not an option b/c the disk is not enabled or so computer managment says. I've tried reinstalling itunes and itunes updater several times. I even downloaded the applications again just to make sure they weren't corrupt.
The message i usually get out of the updater is
"unable to mount ipod." ,(after a wait that has made me age several years).
Im at a loss not only b/c of the time ive spent trying to work this out, and all the forums I've read, but the reason all this started is the ipod fried my last motherboard, a Gigabyte technologies 8KNXP ultra REV 1, when i plugged the ipod into the usb ***!!! I've tried everything short of DOS prompt (of which I have limited understanding) to try and get her working, any suggestions?!?!?

I have had my 2nd gen Ipod Shuffle since May 9th, 2008 and it has never given me problems until now. My computer was getting kind of backed up (I am running on 37.5 gig with 256 mb of RAM), so I decided to completely re-do my computer. Not a problem, I have done it hundreds of times before. Well, I get everything set up again and decide to change what is on my shuffle. I plug it into my computer like normal and Itunes comes up asking to erase and sync to the computer. Everything looks fine. But then when it goes to sync, it comes up with the error "The iPod cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found.". So I reinstall Itunes and try it again. Same problem. Then I format it using my computer. The problem is still there. I tried to restore it in Itunes, but it came up with the error again and froze. Then I downloaded the ipod restore program and ran it, and it did take everything off. I plugged it back in, but it still had the same problem, even when it was completely re-set. I even tried unplugging my mouse and keyboard, but it didn't work. Then I decided to experiment. I uninstalled Itunes for a while and plugged the ipod into my computer to see it it would show up as a disk. It did. Then I reinstalled itunes and tried it again, but as soon as itunes started up, the ipod icon in the "My Computer" box disappeared. So I cannot use itunes to fix my problems because the computer reads that the ipod isn't there while itunes is running.
I have no idea what to do now, and if anyone knows, please help me!!!

I have a strange problem too. This doesn't involve "required disk not found" problem.
I also have a 2nd generation IPod Shuffle.
I have a Windows XP and the latest service pack, so my PC is not at fault. I have all my music on an external hard drive which works all the time, as i have playlists in ITunes and Windows Media Player and they always work. I also bought a 80GB Ipod some 2 years ago never had a problem with the music being on an external hard drive.
With the shuffle i made a playlist up of all the tracks i wanted on it. I then Plugged the shuffle in and i seemed to sync. The playlist has 200 tracks this in total is 900MB. The shuffle is 2GB!!
After syncing i unplugged went to listen and only 5!!! songs were on it.
I noticed that the external hard drive was dissapearing. I mean when i go into my computer and into external hard drive and it was empty. When its got 350 albums on it, 1000s of pictures etc.
The external hard drive seems to dissapear when the shuffle is plugged in
Does anybody know how to fix this as listening to 5 songs i rather boring!!!! -
Does anybody know why my ipod touch 3rd generations screen does not show anything? The screen is all black constantly. Why the itune pumps a message "iTune could not back up the iPod XXX because a session could not be started with the iPod" when trying to backing up the device?
could anyone help me?Either set them up with seperate apple id's and differentiate the sync options for each one or deselct the sync apps option in iTunes.

Can I use my MacPro on it's side?
I have a need to use my mac pro on it's side for a studio application. Are there any risks involved in this. Obviously the optical drive will not be very useful this way, but for this particular application that will not be an issue.
