Starting with Analytic workspace

Hello,
I've to start studing Analitic workspace, there is a good guide dedicated to it? should I start using Analitic workspace manager?
thanks
Antonio

Hi!
The guides you can read to learn Oracle OLAP:
-- begging --
1st. Read the Rittman (Plus Consultancy) article
http://www.rittman.net/stories/2003/11/12/oracle9iOlapUncovered.html
Also Search for vlamis company or iaf company slides...and look for their homepages. Nice stuff there ...
-- later --
2nd. Get the guides from Oracle
For Reference guide, DML guide, OLAPI guide
-- start coding ---
3nd. Where the 'fun' begins..

  • ETL with OWB and Workspace Manager with Analytic Workspace Manager?

    I already created my dimensions and cubes with "warehouse builder", as a tables, so can I map them in the dimensions and cubes defined with "analytic workspace manager?
    please somone help, becasue I can't found this information on a manual "OLAP application's developers guide".
    also, whichis the manual that I have to follow to create things in AWM? i think is this that I use "OLAP application's developers guide"
    Someone can tell me something?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    I.m using OWB 10.1.0.4.0 and choosing "Project" then "Metadata Export" and finally "Bridge" I can lanch a wizard that allow me to choose between 3 kind of export.
    If you choose OLAP the wizard will ask you which collection of metadata to export and other options, after succesfully running this wizard (which is not so easy) you can open the AWM and see the export of your dimesion and cube iside an AW.
    I'm finding lots of problems using this feature due to the limited options I can set to the cube and the dimension (type of aggregations, calculated measures, limit on the number of measures in the cube, etc.).
    Waiting for the new OWB Paris if you can post your experience it will be very appreciated.
    Good luck,

  • OEPE causes Eclipse Kepler to start with wrong workspace, overrides Eclipse's workspace configuration

    I'm a new OEPE user, and found that after installing it, Eclipse (Kepler) now starts up with the wrong workspace every time. I have to explicitly do File > Switch Workspace... to get Eclipse to restart with the correct workspace. Also, the workspace I want to use is the only one listed in the Workspaces preferences panel (Window > Preferences > General > Startup and Shutdown > Workspaces). So I can't figure out why Eclipse is using the wrong workspace, and why it's even finding this wrong one.
    I found that many other users of OEPE with Kepler are having this same problem:
    Eclipse Community Forums: Eclipse Platform » Kepler: On start up, I no longer get prompted for workspace locat…
    And this sounds curiously like this old problem reported right here on the OTN Community site:
    https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2191740
    Any suggestions for how to get around this? I assume this is a bug, but don't know the correct process for reporting OEPE bugs.

    Hi.
    I suspect that some action by the OEPE code somehow modifies the OSGi Cache so that it no longer asks you what workspace you'd like to use (and forces usage of the workspace in top user directory.)  I found that if you put in "-clean" in your eclipse.ini, then you get asked what workspace you'd like to use.  This flag clears out the OSGi cache (hence my theory that it is this cache that is messed up)
    That said, there are arguments for not doing this all the time.  See this discussion: java - How to run eclipse in clean mode? and what happens if we do so? - Stack Overflow
    Finally, I suspect you have another workspace on your system now.  Presuming you are on a PC, go to your user dir - I'd wager there is a "workspace" dir there now.  That is where OEPE wants to work.
    Good Luck!
    OEPE should be able to work with any workspace; it has in the past!  If a specific workspace is required with this release, that is a step backward in my opinion.  That said, if that is the direction of the product, so be it.  I find it hard to believe that is the direction of the product, however!

  • Problem with Analytical Workspace Manager

    Hello,
    Don't ask me how but I could download the AWM 10.2.0.2A and install it. I followed the GLOBAL example and built a two cubes. Until now all seem to work, but today AWM doesn't work when I try to expand the schemas node it doesn't work.
    I'm guessing perhaps the software that I has downloaded has any limit of use.
    Does anyone can say anything about this problem?
    Where Can I download again AWM?
    Thanks in advance.
    Carlos

    Perhaps the OLAP Catalog has references to the AW that you created in GLOBAL schema (although the GLOBAL schema has now been dropped).
    If it is a fresh instance or dedicated instance of the database that you're using (no one other than you is using it.. its a new environment w.r.t OLAP) then you could re-install the OLAP option using the Database adminstrator help/login. This is akin to running an uninstall and install script relating to Oracle OLAP for this version.. Probably found under admin/sql directory..
    NOTE: This is an Oracle DBA task/activity. so pls discuss with the DBA incharge of your env.. This step will re-install the OLAP metadata/catalog (OLAPSYS schema usually) and should allow you to start afresh with GLOBAL or other application schemas for creating AWs.

  • SOLVED how to solve this problem with analytic workspace manager

    Hi,
    If I have built a model in AWM, I close AWM, and restart it, I cann't attach to my workspace anymore.
    This is the error-message:
    oracle.AWXML.AWException: oracle.AWXML.AWException: An error occurred setting Attribute DataType PRODUCT.LONG_DESCRIPTION.ATTRIBUTE : TEXT
    I have an oracle 10gR2-database.
    How to solve this ?
    Any reaction will be appreciated.
    Leo
    PS I installed the latest version of AWM

    According to Metalink Note 376376.1, I think the way to resolve this problems is as follows:
    1- Download MetaLink patch 5183720 Oracle OLAP: Patch AWM 10.2.0.2 A
    2- Install AWM 10.2.0.2A
    Unzip the downloaded file into a new directory.
    Execute awm\bin\awm.exe.

  • Analytic workspace version error

    I am running 10g on WinXP. I am using AWM 10.1.0.4
    I connect to the db and am able to view my schemas.
    When I attempt to create a Workspace in "Model View" I recieve the error
    "ORA-00904: "O"."SF_VERSION": invalid identifier"
    Do I need an earlier version of AWM?
    Thanks in Advance

    It appears you might have an issue with 'C' below. Here is a checklist to make sure your Oracle Database is properly configured to run with Analytic Workspace Manager 10.1.0.4:
    A) Make sure you have the Enterprise Edition of the Oracle Database 10g.
    SQL> select banner from v$version where banner like 'Oracle%';
    You should see Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition.
    B) Make sure you have the Data Warehouse database configuration or the OLAP Option enabled.
    SQL> select parameter, value from v$option where parameter='OLAP';
    You should see OLAP TRUE.
    C) Make sure the RDBMS 10.1.0.4 patch set has been completely installed. Users often miss the required Post-Installation Steps such as running catpatch.sql.
    SQL> select comp_name, version, status from dba_registry;
    You should see VALID and 10.1.0.4.0 for the OLAP components.
    D) The Oracle Database must have the compatibility mode of 10.1 to use the new Model View in Analytic Workspace Manager 10.1.0.4.0 as it relies on the unique features found in Oracle Database 10g.
    SQL> select name, value, description from v$parameter where name ='compatible';
    You should see 10.1, not 9.2 or earlier.

  • Where to find Analytic Workspace Manager for Oracle9i?

    Hi,
    I am looking for Analytic Workspace Manager for Oracle 9i. Could someone point me to the place it can be downloaded? On Oracle OTN there are only versions 10g and 11g. I couldn't find it on Metalink either.
    Why I need so old version? We are about to upgrade our existing installation from 9i and I need it to see what's inside in our Oracle 9i database (9.2.0.6) before going into 10g.
    Or maybe it is possible to use AWM 10g against database 9i? This would solve my problems.
    Is it possible to upgrade analytic workspaces from oracle 9i into 10g with analytic workspace manager 10g?
    Best wishes
    Tomasz Michniewski

    Hello Laura,
    Well, I was looking for this 9i version of AWM, and I was even thinking that AWM does not exist for 9i. Especially that in 9i documentation AWM is not mentioned.
    But in the meantime I have found some install from some our backup cd-rom. It says:
    # Analytic Workspace Manager : 9.2.0.4.1
    # DATE: September 26, 2003
    # Platform Patch for : platform independent
    # Product Version # : 9.2.0.4.1
    # Product : Analytic Workspace Manager
    # Platforms
    # Analytic Workspace Manager uses a platform independent install and
    # has been approved on the following platforms:
    # - Windows NT 4.0, 2000 & XP
    # - Solaris 32 & 64-bit
    # - Linux 32-bit
    # - AIX 64-bit
    # - HP-UX 64-bit
    # - Tru64
    # Requirements
    # The Analytic Workspace Manager client requires the following Oracle9i
    # Database configuration:
    # - Oracle 9.2.0.1.0 Enterprise Edition Database
    # - RDBMS 9.2.0.4.0 patch set (PS# 3095277)
    # - OLAP 9.2.0.4.1 patch (PS# 3084634)
    So is it the AWM for 9i?

  • Exploring AW (analytic workspace) in Java

    Hello,
    I am creating a java program that can retrive data from analytic workspace that is also built with java program, but I don't know how, so I have a couple of questions for those that can help me.
    1. Is there anyway that I can insert data into aw dimension with java program?
    2. If not how can I map existing tables within Database with analytic workspace dimension?
    3. Is there any posibility to connect to aw dimension with MdmDimension class and retrive data with that class ?
    4. Can anyone provide any example programs on this?
    5. Can anyone provide me a simple example how to explore data within the analytic workspace in Java. I want to retrive data from aw cube or dimension if it is posible.
    I appreciate any help,
    Thanks

    Have you considered using the BI Beans? Just a thought...
    Regarding your questions, 1 and 2 are probably best addressed with the OLAP Analytic Workspace API (a.k.a. AW/XML). You might want to take a look at the Javadoc. You can find the latest Oracle OLAP documentation at the following OTN site:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/olap/olap.html
    As for the other questions, here is some help from an OLAP API developer:
    3. Is there any possibility to connect to AW dimension with MdmDimension class and retrieve data with that class?
    The simple answer is no. The OLAP API divides functionality into metadata and data. The Mdm and Mtm classes deal with metadata. These classes represent the relationships between AW objects. The Source and Cursor classes deal with data. They are used to define queries and retrieve data. But the getSource() method can be used on just about any Mdm object to get a Source.
    4. Can anyone provide any example programs on this?
    The "Developer's Guide to the OLAP API" has a lot of examples. But here's a brief example of getting the member IDs of a dimension.
    // given objects
    DataProvider dp;
    MdmPrimaryDimension dimObj;
    // we will commonly work with hierarchies rather than dimensions
    MdmHierarchy hierObj = dimObj.getDefaultHierarchy();
    // get the Source for the hierarchy
    Source hier = hierObj.getSource();
    // get a Cursor
    CursorManagerSpecification cursorManagerSpec =
    dp.createCursorManagerSpecification(hier);
    SpecifiedCursorManager cursorManager =
    dp.createCursorManager(cursorManagerSpec);
    Cursor cursor = cursorManager.createCursor();
    // retrieve the values
    do {
    System.out.println(((ValueCursor) cursor).getCurrentValue());
    } while (cursor.next());
    5. Can anyone provide me a simple example how to explore data within the analytic workspace in Java. I want to retrieve data from AW cube or dimension if it is possible.
    The preceding is one example of exploring data from a hierarchy. Getting data from a dimension is nearly identical -- don't call getDefaultHierarchy(), and call getSource() on dimObj. Getting data from a cube is a little more involved. Again, there are excellent
    examples in the documentation, but here's a brief one:
    // Given objects
    DataProvider dp;
    TransactionProvider tp;
    MdmMeasure salesObj; // dimensioned by customer and time for this example
    MdmHierarchy customerHier;
    MdmHierarchy timeHier;
    // Get Sources
    Source sales = salesObj.getSource();
    Source customer = customerHier.getSource();
    Source time = timeHier.getSource();
    // Create the query. We must join the measure to its dimensions.
    Source query = sales.join(customer).join(time);
    // We have created a new Source, so we need to commit the OLAP API
    transaction.
    tp.prepareCurrentTransaction();
    tp.commitCurrentTransaction();
    // Create the Cursor. This Cursor has a more complex shape because the query is more complex.
    CursorManagerSpecification cursorManagerSpec =
    dp.createCursorManagerSpecification(hier);
    SpecifiedCursorManager cursorManager =
    dp.createCursorManager(cursorManagerSpec);
    CompoundCursor cursor = (CompoundCursor) cursorManager.createCursor();
    // retrieve the values
    do {
    Iterator iter = (cursor.getOutputs().iterator();
    boolean first = true;
    while (iter.hasNext()) {
    if (!first)
    System.out.print(", ");
    System.out.print(((ValueCursor) iter.next()).getCurrentValue());
    first = false;
    System.out.print(": ");
    System.out.println(cursor.getValueCursor().getCurrentValue());
    } while (cursor.next());
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Are Analytic Workspaces suitable for very large data sets?

    Hi all,
    I have made many different tests with analytic workspaces and i have used the different features (compression,composites...). The results especially for maintenance are disappointing.
    I have a star schema with 6 dimensions. The fact table has 730 million rows, the first dimension has 2,9 million rows and the other 5 dimensions have between 25 and 300 rows each.
    My conclusion is that Analytic Workspaces don't help in situations like mine. The time for maintenance is very very bad not to mention the time for aggregations. I even tried to populate the cube in parts( 90 million rows for the first population) but nothing change. And there are some other problems with storage and tablespaces ( I always get the message unable to extent TEMP tablespace. The size of it is 54Gb).
    Is there something i missing? Has anyone similar problem or different opinion?
    Thank you,
    Ilias

    A few other tips to add to Keith's excellent advice:
    - How many CPU's does your server have? The answer to this may help you decide the optimal level to partition at (in my experience DAY is too low and can cause different problems). What other levels does your time dimension have? Are you loading your cubes in parallel?
    - To speed up your load, partition your underlying fact table with the same granularity as your cubes and place an index on the field mapped to the partition dimension
    - Are you using 10.2.0.3? If so, be very careful with the storage data type you choose when creating your cubes. The default in 10.2.0.3 is NUMBER which has the capability of storing data to 38 significant figures. This usually exceeds what is required for most datasets. If your dataset allows you to use storage of 15 significant figures then you should create your cubes using the DECIMAL data type instead. This will use about one third of the storage space and significantly increase your build speeds (in my experience, more than 3 times faster)
    - Make sure you have preallocated enough permanent and temporary tablespaces for your build. Autoextending can be very time consuming.
    - Consider reducing the amount of aggregation you do in batch. It should not be necessary to pre-aggregate everything in order to get good query performance.
    Generally, I would say that the volume should not be a problem. A single dimension with 2.9 million values is fairly big and can be slow (in OLAP terms) to query but that should not be an obstacle to building it in the first place.
    Good luck!
    Stuart

  • AWM: Enable Analytic Workspace for OLAP API

    Hi,
    I created an analytic workspace with Analytic Workspace Manager which is based on a relational star-schema.
    Now I want to access this analytical workspace by normal SQL-Statements. For this I executed in AWM the 'Enable Analytic Workspace for OLAP API and BI Beans ...' routine which generated views that contain the fact and dimension data.
    My problem is that these views are very huge, because they
    apparently store all possible combintations of dimension- and fact records. Most of the records contain only NULL values in the fact columns. I also used Composite Dimensions for the fact table in order to reduce sparsity.
    Is it normal to have such huge views with mostly NULL values? If yes, how can I handle this in order to get an acceptable performance.
    Here an example of a small fact table I use:
    A fact table with 5400 records with its two dimension tables (1129 and 233 rows, no hierarchies) produces 263057 rows in the view.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
    First of all, thanks for the quick response flavio.
    Meanwhile I have found a solution to my problem:
    I don't use the 'Enable Analytic Workspace for OLAP API and BI Beans ...' routine of AWM anymore. Instead, I write my own statement for creating a relational view for the analytical workspace. The statement looks like following:
    create or replace force view costrate_cube as
    SELECT producttype_number, producttype_description, machine_sk, notok_costrate, production_costrate
    FROM TABLE(CAST(OLAP_TABLE(
    'costrate_aw DURATION SESSION',
    'costrate_table',
    'FETCH producttype_dim_producttype_number,
    producttype_dim_producttype_description,
    produnit_dim_machine_sk, produnit_dim_module_sk,
    notok_costrate_variable, production_costrate_variable
    USING <costrate_cube_composite>','') as costrate_table));
    The important part is the USING clause of the FETCH command. By using the composite of all dimensions of the cube, rows containing only null values in the fact columns are being eliminated. Now I get only the rows which are in my original relational fact table (which is what I wanted).

  • Using Oracle Analytical Workspace With Excel

    Hi i have created an analytical workspace on Oracle Analytical Workspace, Now suppose i want to access this workspace from Excel , is this possible ?? If so How

    Hi,
    I understand there are three Oracle plug-ins for Excel: OLAP, OBIEE, and Essbase. I presume the plug-in you are using is the OLAP plug-in, which only works with Oracle 10g or earlier. Starting in Oracle 11g, however, Oracle recommends you use the Simba MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP (http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/036550 and http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/173668).
    If you use the MDX Provider, your application can connect directly to the Oracle OLAP cube. Since you are using Excel, your users don't need to connect through Oracle, and you do not need to manipulate the retrieved data before displaying it. Excel and its PivotTables will generate MDX queries against the Oracle database through the MDX Provider, so you don't need to use any plug-ins or APIs. This means you don't need to learn any new menus or APIs -- you just use native Excel functionality. Furthermore, your data is coming live from the Oracle database. Each time you open your workboook, you refresh your data with the Data -> Refresh button, and your spreadsheet data is current, not a stale copy.
    Please let me know if I am missing something in your requirements. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns.

  • Does  Analytic Workspace Manager 11.2.0.3.0A  work with oracle database 12c?

    hello,
    i would like to know if AWM 11.2.0.3.0A works against with oracle database 12c in pdb mode or not .
    regards
    jm

    I have attempted to connect 11g versions of AWM to 12c and get this error:
    'This version of Analytic Workspace Manager is incompatible with the database instance. The Analytic Workspace Manager version is 11.2.0.3.0 and the database compatible version is 12.1.0.0.0'
    So unfortunately it is not compatible, and there is currently no AWM for 12c
    I also contacted Oracle support and they wont give me any information about a release date or any information on the xml template specification for 12c.
    I guess we will just have to wait till they release a version of AWM that supports 12c...

    There are posts on the OLAP forum covering this problem. Anthony Waite from the OLAP Product Management team has provided the following information:
    e new, default Model View in AWM 10.1.0.4.0 is based upon the OLAP Analytic Workspace API (a.k.a. AW/XML). Just to recap and further clarify my earlier post, you must pass the following requirements in order to use it:
    1) Be sure to be using the Enterprise Edition of the Oracle Database 10g.
    SQL> select banner from v$version where banner like 'Oracle%';
    You should see Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition.
    2) Be sure to have the Data Warehouse database configuration or the OLAP Option enabled.
    SQL> select parameter, value from v$option where parameter='OLAP';
    You should see OLAP TRUE.
    3) Be sure that the RDBMS 10.1.0.4 patch set has been completely installed. Users often miss the required Post-Installation Steps such as running catpatch.sql.
    SQL> select comp_name, version, status from dba_registry;
    You should see VALID and 10.1.0.4.0 for the OLAP components.
    4) The Oracle Database must have the compatibility mode of 10.1 to use the Model View as it relies on the unique features found in Oracle Database 10g.
    SQL> select name, value, description from v$parameter where name ='compatible';
    You should see 10.1, not 9.2 or earlier.
    5) Please refer to the patchnote.htm that is bundled with 10.1.0.4.0 patch set. Only you are aware of what type of database configuration you have. You will want to pay close attention to "7.2.1.3 Set the SHARED_POOL_SIZE and JAVA_POOL_SIZE Initialization Parameters" and "7.2.2 Upgrade the Release 10.1 Database".
    Basically, I believe you have missed these required steps after installing the 10.1.0.4.0 patch set from the OUI: (pasted from the patchnote.htm)
