Starting with iMovie - general queries.
I am fascinated with iMovie.
I've printed out the 'instructions' and can understand bits of it.
The system tells me I have the wrong Graphics Card for certain facilities but I can live with that.
However:
I have a cart load of Hi8 Camcorder tapes. I can convert these to DVD on my domestic DVD recorder.
My computer only recognises the DVDs as blank discs.
Is there any sort of fix for this?
The thumbnails provided when I'm playing with titles seem to show a very bitmapped version of the fonts. Does this cure itself in the finished production?
Thank you for any help. Free Cinema tickets for my first International Premiere!
Yes, the camcorder was the top of its particular range at the time - over £1k to buy and has all the bits - the optics, including zoom, are brilliant.
I am being referred to all sorts of mpeg conversion add-ons but I think that's to play domestic DVDs.
All I need to do is edit my Hi8 tapes and burn to DVD. If I can also 'title' them, so much the better.
Your suggested 'plug and play' with Firewire would be the ideal solution.
I'll check the Firewire connections to and from both devices.
Not sure I have the willpower to delve into the deeper mysteries of iMovie - I have limited understanding of these matters and my brain would start to hurt.

Need help to get started with iMovie
I have used the iMac for sometime but never created a movie. With my new iMac, I want to start using the iMovie '09. The first basic problem is that it will not accept any of my videos.
I have videos made on a fairly new Cannon camera (*.movl), on a Flip recorder (*.avi). I thought the program would accept the *.mov but it will not. I have converted these videos to mpeg4, mp4, mov using ffmpegx, and mpeg streamclip, but they still will not be accepted by the iMovie program. I tried to drag and drop the videos without success, both with and without first creating a "New Project". What am I doing wrong?
ThanksHi
This is a very complexed question (I think) and I can only suggest partial help if any.
I would from still photo Camera import to iPhoto. Mine does this and so the movie
sequences too.
Then after closing iPhoto and opening iMovie - I see in Browser/Events window high
at left hand - My Mac hard disk and under this iPhoto Library
And here I find my movie sequences from my Leica D-Lux and vife Nikon D300s

ILife broken! All started with iMovie problem, any ideas?
I have posted in the iMovie 6HD forums about a problem of it slowing down to a crawl and no one has been able to resolve that issue. I spoke to several employees at the Apple store about the problem & they ran it past a 'Genius' who didn't suggested reinstalling the entire iLife suite.
I did that yesterday and now none of the iLife suite will even open. When you click the dock there is 1 bounce and nothing happens. Dbl click the icon in the finder, it acts like its opening, but nothing happens. What went wrong? I've never had Apple software ever act this way.
I reinstalled the iLife software twice to no avail. Please help!
Thanks,
MarkDid you run the suggested 3-pass Memtest? What did it report? What did the AHT say? If you believe that the hardware is OK, then it is a software issue. If so, and you have done a clean install from the ground up... things are indeed looking bad for you.
I would first run the 3-pass Memtest in single user mode as the instructions outline. This test alone will take several hours... unless your "lucky" enough to have an easily identifiable bad memory block. After that, and assuming the AHT passed everything it is now time to start from scratch. Install the OS and nothing but the OS. Do a clean install, not an archive and install (again, make sure everything is backed up to another drive). Take the new install out for a spin- does everything seem OK? Then start installing apps one at a time. If the iLife apps are your main apps, install them, run all the updates, and then repair permissions. Now how are the iLife apps responding (if at all)? If installing JUST the iLife apps on a clean install of the OS doesn't work, there is a high probability of a hardware problem which means now a technician would need diagnose the hardware problem. If the iLife apps work without any other software installed, then there is a high probability there is a software conflict with another program. Now it is time to install one program at a time trying out the iLife (iMovie) apps until you see which program is causing the conflict.

PeopleSoft queries that start with QA_TL
We are in the process of upgrading from Peoplesoft HCM 8.8 to PeopleSoft HCM 9.0. Part of this process involves cleaning up old queries. We noticed that there are a lot of delivered pubblic queries that start with QA_TL that we have not used in at least 5 years. Does anyone out there know what these queries are and what the prefix QA_TL stands for?
when u work for an XYZ company... developers under XYZ name their queries as XYZ_module name generally.
QA_TL can be related as QA as company name, TL stands for time and labour under workforce management for HCM application.
if QA is not ur company name , may be while testing under 8.8 they termed the query to QA query.
coming onto queries , without looking at the queries it is impossible to say what that query does.
from your statement as everything is a public query , u can run them and see the output in excel , what it does exactly.
under PIA -- reporting tools -- query manager ... do a search
with each query name there is some description written next to it.
if the end user requests saying "he needs certain data to be populated out", developer writes a query and add security to it. under time labour generally queries are activity by vendor group, activity by batches, Dept Mg detail ... things like that.

How do I start with audio first and add video to Imovie as the song plays?
I want to start an Imovie project by adding video from my Isight camera to audio that I have put down first. This way I can sync my video to the audio in real time. When I have audio that will play, I am unable to add the video because the Isight camera will not record when the audio is playing. As well, when I record with my Isight camera the audio does not play.
Any help to this new user would be helpful.Syncing the video to the audio could be tough to do that way, but this might let you do it:
1. Drag your audio clip to the Finder desktop. iMovie will copy it there. (The entire source file of the audio clip.)
2. Double-click on the audio file on the desktop to open it in QuickTime Player.
3. Play the audio in QT Player as you record with your iSight in iMovie.

Is there a way to make an audio clip not cover the whole project in iMovie? I want to add audio clip or song and let it start at a certain point in the project. Whenever I add audio or song it covers the whole project. I'm working with iMovie on IPad!
Thank you for your reply Karsten but unfortunately this didn't help me so far. Or maybe I'm missing something?
First the link is a tutorial for iMovie on a Mac. I'm using iMovie on iPad so the steps are inapplicable.
Second it is only possible for me to manipulate the end part of the sound clip to whichever duration I want. But I can't do the same with the 'beginning' of the sound clip.
I simply want to place some photos in the beginning of my video with no sound in the background then after like 2 secs I want to start the music clip. For some reason that is not possible! Cause every time I drop the music clip unto my project timeline it automatically place it self along with the first frame in the project! And consequently the photos and music are forced to start together.
Hope I'm making sense... -
IMovie 9.0.9 doesn't start with yosemite
Good morning, I've found in Application folder that there's the old iMovie 9.0.9, but when I try to launch it, it doesn't start ....
But, If I select the package content of the App (mouse right click) and double click over "iMovie EXE", only in this cas, I can use iMovie 9.0.9 (it starts) .....
In the same time runs also "Terminal" with this text message ......
Can I do something to unable the icon of iMovie 9.0.9 or under Yosemite is it impossible ?
ps. I prefer iMovie 9.0.9 because I can still use chapter marker that I make with iMovie 9.0.9 with iDVD ......

I have a problem with Imovie. Just brought an macbook 15 retina , iLife install and Imovie was working. I than did a data migration from my old macbook pro and now it crashes on start up. I tried to re-install from app store but no option to re-install, just installed and it greyed out.
Well, my two-month-old MBP has no qualms about booting from a no-name external USB HD I put together...
Given that is is a common point of failure, I would imagine a large Apple Store should keep a stock of HD's on hand.
Now since you're a bit desperate and the genie pops up til Saturday and you seem to be the enterprising kind, let's try an experiment: if you have room enough in the external HD and assuming it isn't a Time Machine volume, why don't you plug it in, stick the Install CD and see if the installer lets you select the external drive as the install target. If you can install Leopard on it, on top of the backup without reformatting, and the Mac can boot from the drive afterwards, at least you would have some functionality restored and would be able to pull your stuff from the internal HD. Apple says booting from USB drives is not supported but that does not equate to not possible; some brands do work. Risks? Always. You can always lose your backup. Like I said, a challenge for an enterprising gal....
Next time around, consider having a bootable external clone at hand for rainy days. I keep three myself...
P.S. Since I'll be in the Dallas-FW area in late June, I can volunteer with the confetti.... -
Trouble with iMovie '11 transitions and themes? I'm running Lion, Mac OS X and just noticed today that the transitions and themes don't seem to be working at all when I start new projects or try to add to old projects. What is the solve here?
I've seen notes about clearing the cache but it seems that this is an older OS and I can't find the plist mentioned here because it's an older system. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cL9RuDV3Qc

Start Using iMovie 10.0.7 With New/Empty Library?
I've just upgraded to Yosemite, so now I have iMovie 10.0.7, in addition to iMovie 9.0.9 which is still in my Applications folder.
Is there a way for me to start using iMovie 10.0.7 with a totally new/empty Library, and not have to deal with seeing/converting my old iMovie 9.0.9 Events & Projects, for now?
If I start using iMovie 10.0.7 with a totally new/empty Library, will it be possible in the future to convert all my old iMovie 9.0.9 Events & Projects, bringing them into iMovie 10.0.7 when I'm ready (have time)?
Thanks. That's great. Exactly what I was hoping to hear.
So it's simply a matter of clicking on Update Later when i first open iMovie 10.0.7. Easy. I wanted to check first, because when I opened the new Photos app for the first time, it started migrating/updating my old iPhoto library, without asking me first.
I found a related article, from Apple, for anyone with a similar question to mine:

DV Start/Stop detect with iMovie
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?forumID=936&threadID=557928
Because this thread was marked solved I can't add to it.
I think the problem is the rendering as you surmised. There is no way to fix this problem because of the way iMovie works. It captures without timecode so every clip begins at zero. Once you've rendered the material and moved it to the browser the render file looks to the TC on the clip to sync up. Once it's broken up every subclip starts with zero because it has no inherent timecode so the render file associated with zero TC links to every subclip.Hi Tom,
thanks for addressing that topic again (I had just marked it "solved" because it was open by a long time...).
I see what you mean: since there is no TC in the .dv from iMovie there is no way to sync the audio render file and the subclips. Another interpretation is that DV Start/Stop Detect applies only to the original .dv media, not to audio (item level) render file created in the timeline, so FCE cannot associate different sections of the audio render file to the corresponding subclips.
But now that I read it again... I think we are just saying the same thing!
And you are suggesting a feedback would be useless.
Thanks anyway

Only save queries if name starts with Y
Hello,
How can security be configured so that users can only save queries whose Technical names start with Y?
What authorizations are required and what values should be assigned?
Thanks,
NickHello Jin,
We are on BW 3.5.
Here is the complete set of authorizations assigned to my test user. What I want is for this user to only be able to create queries if they choose to save them with a name starting with Y.
Currently (with the authorization specified below) they can save queries that start with any letter. When I save a query with the description and Technical name of: DELETE_VG15 it gives me two messages for "Authorization check". The first says "You do not have authorization for change" and the second message says: "Query (InfoCube ) was saved" So it does end up saving even though the name provided doesn't conform to what I want in the authorizations.
Hopefully you can help me fill in what is wrong, maybe copy what i have and repost with the values you are using.

I want to start with audio on a timeline and add photos. Why is this not possible in the new confusing version of iMovie?
Yrs,
Unspeakably FrustratedYes, you can do this. Drag the music track to the background and start adding your pictures. A great way to do this is to use beat markers so your photos will change on the beat.
A really fast way to do this is to line up your photos in an iPhoto album in the order you want them. You can drag the whole album into iMovie at once.
Here is a tutorial on the beat marker feature.
Here is a sample of a slideshow made by dragging in the music first, adding beat markers, and then adding photos. -
Hierarchy/heirarchical queries/query start with connect
ok... I have seen many examples of using hierachical queries. All of the example has parent as null and children with 1 parent. I haven't seen any query that queries a child with multiple parents.
For example.
Table A:
Child--Parent
1--null
2--1
3--1
3--2
4--3
5--2
Select query:
Select child, level
from A
start with child = 3
connect by prior child = parent
Result
Child--Level
3--1
4--2
3--1
4--2
Notice that it display the child '3' twice. Its because it has 2 different parent.
My question is that, how do I make the query to display this iteration once?Hi, Sentinel,
I'd love to see a solution that simple, but I don't think it's possible.
Suppose you want to see child=2 and all it's descendants:
--<"begin sample data">
with a as (select 1 child, null parent from dual
union all select 2, 1 from dual
union all select 3, 1 from dual
union all select 3, 2 from dual
union all select 4, 3 from dual
union all select 5, 2 from dual
--<"cut here">
Select child, level
from (select child, min(parent) parent from a group by child)
start with child = 2
connect by prior child = parent;Produces this output:
CHILD LEVEL
2 1
5 2I believe OP wants to get this for the descendants of child=2:
CHILD LEVEL
2 1
5 2[b]
3 2
4 3So what happened to child=3? For child=3, MIN (parent) = 1, according to this query. That's true when the universe is the entire table, but we're only interested in child=2 and its descendants.
