STARTS SEARCH ON FIRST LETTER

When I try to do a file search using Spotlight or using the window file search feature, the system does not give me a chance to type the whole word and starts searching on the first letter. It will not allow me to stop the search until it is completed or I have to quit the application. Is there anyway to type in a whole word or file name before searching? My only alternative has been to keep the MAC OS 9 Find File application on my dock which gives me exactly what I want after MAC OS 9 boots up. Find File gives me a list of files to scroll through instead of trying to figure out if the file is a document, movie, music, pdf, attachment, and then having to search these subheadings for the file. Is there a simple find file application for Tiger where I can type in a word and get a list of file names instead of all of these subheadings?

Hi Marcia,
You might want to try a little app called Laserlight:
http://mysite.verizon.net/oneleftfoot/laserlight/
It's a simple little program that presents a search box that won't start searching until you hit return. It then passes the search string to spotlight and the search carries on as normal.
It's totally free, so give it a try and see how you get on with it.
All the best,

  • LDAP Addressbook search - match first letter only

    According to the SPA500 Admin Guide, a LDAP query will search on every letter:
    "This searches for the text string anywhere in the beginning, middle, or at the end of a name."
    Would it be possible to search only on the first letter of a name?
    Erik

    Eric, I don't know if you ever solved this request.
    In the search syntax you will see the "$VALUE" criteria bounded by two "*". These serve as wildcard matches. If you simply delete the first "*" before $VALUE your match will start at the beginning. Likewise if you remove the second "*" instead the search will try to match at the end. If you remove both it will look for an exact match.

  • Regex: searches for first letter in word return all letters

    I want to init-cap the words in a sentence, and I use the pattern "\\b[a-z]" to search for the first letter of each word. However, it actually matches all the letters, so that the entire sentence is capitalized. If I reverse the pattern to look for the last letter of each word, "[a-z]\\b", then only the last letter is capitalized as expected.
    Is this a bug or a misunderstanding of regular expressions on my part?
    Here's my code:
    String s = "this is a test";
    Pattern p = Pattern.compile("\\b[a-z]");
    Matcher m = p.matcher(s);
    StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
    boolean result = m.find();
    while(result) {
    m.appendReplacement(sb, m.group().toUpperCase());
    result = m.find();
    m.appendTail(sb);
    System.out.println(sb.toString());

    It capitalizes only the first letter of words for me. Try getting the latest version of the JDK.

  • Country list dropdown search by first letter doesn't work for some countries in the list

    Hi,
    We have this issue with the country list search in Travel Request with the drop down list when user is trying to choose the country by entering the first letter say C for Canada (finds Canada in the list) it works for the countries from A to O  and  doesn't work from P to Z.
    It is NW7.31 portal
    What seems to be the problem ?

    Hi Denis
    Get them to take a look at this wiki page:
    http://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/x/2oQCFQ
    It lists the latest notes for your basis version and the notes are usually cumulative which means if you apply the latest notes, it will bring in the pre-requisites and earlier notes too.
    Hope it helps you Denis.

  • How do i prevent the system from keeping what u type - username, sites, etc. on search box, i just type the first letter and it comes up immediately; even my username!

    When I go to a search box, i type in the first letter and the whole word comes up.
    I type in the first letter of the username and the whole word comes up.
    I just type anything and the next time i log, it remembers the whole word.
    Please take this out of my system. I do not want it to work this way. I want all memory to be gone.

    I'm starting to come to this conclusion myself, actually... though, how mom managed to do this on accident without mucking about in terminals or anything more than just a cursory knowledge of the OS X system configurations (behind the scenes), I don't know : |
    ... on the other hand, her and I tend to be the exceptions to a lot of rules : |
    I downloaded and installed TinkerTool, even though it supposedly doesn't work past 10.5.8, in the hoopes that, what it displayed (regardless of what it could change) would be correct as far as my "System" and "System (Headlines)" font settings were (see attached screenshot of the font section of TinkerTool for my system--not mom's).
    I've instructed her to install and run the utility (but not to change anything) and then send me a screenshot of the "Fonts" section so I can compare it to my own. If there's something different on her system, since TinkerTool should work on hers, we may be able to fix it that way... though it would, frustratingly enough, remain a mystery to all concerned as to how she managed to stumble upon this in the first place : |
    Anyway, I'm still hard at work on it... hopefully others are too and will share what they discover (if anything).

  • Safari 7.0.2 (9537.74.9) crashes after typing first letter

    This issue started about two days ago.  Whenever I enter the first letter into Safari it crahses, prompting me to reopen the browser.  It behaves normallly if i click on a bookmark.  I just cannot key in anything anymore.  It never behaved like this.  Any solution or suggestion is welcomed.  I really don't want to use Chrome ...
    Thanks
    Safari 7.0.2 (9537.74.9) on OS X 10.9.2, MacBook Air mid-2011

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
    When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Apple wireless keyboard misses first letter in some words

    When I am typing, particularly in Word 2011, with my Apple Wireless Keyboard, it frequently does not type the first letter of a word.  I have searched and can find no resolution to this problem.  I have messed with Accessibility but that is all turned off.  The only other bluetooth device is my mouse.

    Hi,
    Thanks for this. It isn't the computer though, as it will happen very quickly. For example I can type in a web address, then look up to read the web page for 20 seconds or so, then if I type again it will miss the first key stroke.
    I am starting to get used to typing the first letter twice!
    I can see that it is a widely reported issue with Apple Macs, but I can't find a fix for Windows. I am keen not to have to buy a new keyboard!

  • When typing an email I need each new sentence to automaticaaly start with a capital letter. At present after a full stop the new sentence automatically starts with a lower case letternot an upper case one

    When typing an email new sentences do not automatically start with a capital letter after a full stop.
    Surely this should happen automatically without the need for me to touch the capital letter icon.

    i called apple and the guy i spoke to said it is probably a VIRUS and it will be corrected on the next update!
    Either you didn't actually call Apple, and got some tech support scammer instead (calling the first number that pops up on a Google search for "Apple support" can give you some bad numbers), or the Apple tech you spoke to didn't know what he's talking about. It's not a virus.
    As for the problem, if you have enabled auto-capitalization and the problem continues, first try resetting your device. Press and hold both the home button and the sleep/wake button for about 10 seconds, until the screen turns off. Ignore the slider that will appear. Release the buttons, then press and hold the sleep/wake button until the Apple logo appears. This is the equivalent of a reboot, and should not affect your data or apps.
    If that doesn't help, try restoring your device from backups, and if that doesn't help, restore it to factory settings (ie, do not restore a backup). See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
    If none of that helps, the issue is caused by some kind of hardware problem, and the device will need to be repaired or (more likely) replaced.

    The new but not-ready-for-prime-time autocomplete method searches for matches that contain the entered text, not just ones that begin with the string. Your options are:
    1) type in longer strings that narrow the search
    2) use an add-on to search just the beginnings:

    3) install an older version of TB:

  • Getting the autocomplete setting to work by typing the first letter of a word

    Before I installed Firefox 5.0, I had made it so that whenever I visited a website that remembered an account/password of mine, this happened:
    1.- It asked for my master password.
    2.- After entering it, I would click on the form field and then type in the FIRST LETTER of the account.
    3.- When entering that exact first letter, Firefox would suggest in a drop-down menu the account or accounts that started with that letter on that particular site, e.g.: say I have a Twitter account that is "koko999". If I went to twitter.com and entered the letter "k" in the form field (after entering the master password), Firefox would suggest the account "koko999" in the drop-down menu.
    4.- After selecting the account that I desired from the drop-down menu, Firefox would automatically autocomplete the password.
    5.- Then, if I closed Firefox, all my active accounts would close/sign out. So, if afterwards I opened Firefox, I would have to repeat from Step 1 if I wanted to use an account, e.g.: if I closed FF while having my Twitter account logged in, and then opened FF again, I would have to start from Step 1.
    Now, I had this setting for a bunch of different websites. After installing Firefox 5.0, this configuration vanished or something. Now, when entering the master password, Firefox autocompletes EVERYTHING. Say, using the example from before, that I go to twitter.com. Firefox asks for the master password, I enter it and then the ID/password for the twitter account automatically fills in without me entering any letter in the form field. And I do not want Firefox to do that!
    So, I'm asking for help. I know that what I what to do is not impossible, I just can't find the way to do it! I kinda need the exact steps. Thanks a lot!

    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Password_only_filled_after_entering_user_name
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/signon.autofillForms (false)
    If you are in Private Browsing then Firefox wont fill the names and passwords automatically.
    You can set the pref <b>browser.sessionstore.privacy_level</b> to 2 (never) or 1 (non-HTTPS, default in Firefox 3 versions) on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable saving cookies via session restore.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.privacy_level
    You can also use [[Clear Recent History]] to clear the "Active Logins" when you close Firefox.
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.
