Startup beeps indicate "no good banks"

I have a Power Mac G5 tower, with a 2.3ghz dual-core processor (2005 model), and a terrabyte of disk space.  When I tried to turn it on today, instead of booting up, it emitted 3 beeps, then the fan started blowing loudly, and the light would flash in 3 blinks intermittently.  A little online research yielded this way of interpretting this as an indication of a hardware problem:
1 blink = no RAM installed
2 blinks = incompatible RAM types
3 blinks = no good banks
4 blinks = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 blinks = processor is not usable
I don't really know what "banks" are in this context, or what it means for them to be or not be "good," but I opened it up to have a look.  I read about how the RAM needs to be installed in the slots in mirrored pairs.  In my machine, there were 1GB ram strips in the inner-most slots, so I tried moving them each to the next slot out.  I also got rid of a lot of dust.
I turned it on again and this time got 2 beeps.  I looked at more stuff online and then tried pressing the SMU reset button, with no change.  It sounds like I should next try replacing those RAM strips, which is what I'm about to start working on next.  This means going out and finding a store that sells them, etc.
In the meantime I thought I would post this and see if I get any good insight.  I am in a tight spot here because (while I do have most of my important files backed up) I have a project I've been working on about 14 hours a day for the past week, which is not done yet, and which I need to present on Friday.  If replacing the RAM doesn't work I guess it's the "logic board," or a "bad power supply," whatever that means -- I have yet to investigate how much time/money repairing that would involve.
So I would also be interested in learning, in the event that I cannot fix this problem *today*, is it possible to get the files I want off of the hard drive so I can work on them on a different computer?  I tried starting it in target mode but apparently this is not possible when the computer is in this state.

Hello,
Banks on the G5 refers to opposing RAM slots, since you need matching RAM in opposing banks, 1 with 1, 2 with 2, etc...

If you're sure the RAM is good, try the Hair Dryer trick...

  • HT1547 what does no good banks mean?

hello. I have a macbook pro that when i turn it on it beeps 3 times then p. i know that this means no good banks, but what does that mean? is the RAM faulty?? It is second hand, but i got it from a trusted referbisher. I cant remember if he put new RAM in, but i know he put a new hard drive in. thanks.

    3 Beeps means bad RAM.
Here's what you do, open the back of your macbook and take the RAM off.
Once the RAM is off, put it back in.  Make sure you push it firmly.
    Turn your Macbook back on.
If the beeps are stil present,
Go back to the back of your Macbook, take the RAM off in the first bank, the one you see.
Turn on your macbook again.  If the beeps disappear, turn off your macbook and take the other RAM off and move that RAM to the top bank.  Turn your macbook on again, if i doesn't beep, then you have a bad RAM.
If it beeps, then your upper slot is bad.

  • HT1547 No good banks?

What does "no good banks" mean?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
This refers to the memory slots, so it would mean that they are damaged. However, the article is outdated, so check the beeps with this article > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5860?viewlocale=en_US
In case the memory slots are damaged, your logic board will have to be replaced, so take your Mac to any Apple Store or reseller

  • IMac G5 strange startup beep

My iMac locked up when waking from sleep, so I restarted it. I got a strange multiple note beep that repeated three times. It began to startup and then I got the folder with a flashing ?. I booted from the OSX disk and used disk utility, but my hard drive doesn't show up. Is my drive dead or is there something else I can try?
    iMac G5 20" screen   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I am having a similar issue with my parrent's iMac G5, however, instead of 3 chimes, im getting 3 strong buzzing sounds.
I also assumed it was the drive, and in fact after starting up from the 10.4 installation DVD, Disk Utility would not list the drive as a volume. I replaced the drive with another SATA drive, and still Disk Utility shows now drive available other than the DVD drive.
Ive never heard these buzzing sounds before. I was told that for several weeks before the startup problem occured, the fans were constantly running at full speed.
Im going to try to reset the SMU and OF today and see if that helps. Unfortunately, AppleCare was not purchased, so it is out of warranty. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

  • Startup Beep but only through USB speakers...

I am using a brand new Aluminum iMac 24" 2.4 with OSX 10.4.10 installed. The computer is connected to a USB hub which further connects to Harmon / Kardon external speakers and an iPod dock.
I recently installed (2) 2G OWC memory modules. At startup, the iMac beeped twice indicating a memory issue. I removed the memory and replaced the OEM memory (1) 1G module. At restart, the iMac continued to beep but only once. I disconnected all peripherals, shut down completely and restarted - no beep. I shut down and powered on several times - no beep. I thought all was well until I reconnected by USB hub. Once again, one beep at startup through the external speakers.
I zapped the PRAM but no help. Can USB connections can cause this? I'm trippin' out.
    -d

It's not one of life's necessities, no. It is an awesome sound though. It's a pick-me-up.
I do find it curious that my old SE, SE30, IIci, LC475, Power Macintoshes 7500 and 8500, and PowerBook G3 always had the startup chime through the external speakers and this machine doesn't.

  • How do I turn off Sleep/Hibernation/Startup Beeps and Sounds?

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad x200 running vista ultimate. type 7454-cto
How do i turn off these annoying beeps that sound every time my computer goes into and out of sleep and hibernation.
I've tried turning the sound scheme to "No sounds," but the beep still sounds when computer enters and exits sleep and hibernation.
If i turn on "mute" before i enter sleep or hibernate, the beep does not sound (which is what i want). Unfortunately, its impossible to turn on MUTE when im trying to bring the computer out of sleep or hibernate (which makes it very distracting to turn the computer on during class).
    Solution:
Enter BIOS by pressing F1 during boot
         >Config
                  >Beep and Alarm
Set Power control beep to [Disabled]

Just tried it out and the BIOS solution works.  Here's the funny part: After disabling the beep in BIOS config, I started windows and opened Power Manager again.  Sure enough, the "beep when power state changes" option was finally disabled.  Just for kicks, I tried to see if I could enable it again in Power Manager.  I enabled it just fine in Power Manager but when I tried to disable it again I COULDN'T!  I had to back into the BIOS again to disable it.  So the deal seems to be that Power Manager will allow you to turn on the annoying beep, but if you want to turn it off, you need to do it in the BIOS settings.

  • MacBook Pro startup beep

My MacBook Pro (Mid-2010) doesn't "beep" when starting up. What can the cause of this?
    Thanks.

I do not have any explanation for you.  What I suggest is to run an Apple Hardware Test and see if that picks up any useful information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
I also would make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and see if the technicians will be able to find the answer.  Note that genius bar evaluations are free.

  • FileVault 2 encryption for the startup disk not a good idea for server?

    Hello,
in the Mac OS X Lion help files it states the following:
With Mac OS X Lion Server, encryption isn’t recommended for the startup disk or any disk that stores service data. If these disks are encrypted, the server can’t restart until you go to the server and enter the password at the server’s keyboard. If you use Lion Server to share an encrypted disk, the disk isn’t available to users until you enter the password at the server’s keyboard.
Does this also apply to regular Mac OS X Lion? I would like to be able to wake up my iMac from sleep through SSH, and occasionally be able to restart the system remotely if I need to. If the above is true it seems like it would disable me from doing this.
    Thanks

    Does anyone have an answer?

  • Lenova Thinkpad R52 Model: 18605EU Mem Upgrade Startup Beep Code 1-3-3-1

I am helping a friend who does not know anything about computers.  I looked up the specs and discovered this laptop can have a max of 2GB of RAM.  It has a single slot with 512MB module in it.
    The spec call for
    533Mhz front side bus
    DDR2 SDRAMM
    533 / PC2-4200 1.8V
I ordered and installed a Kingston HyperX Performance 2GB module with above specs.
When booting, there is a 1-3-3-1 Beep sequence and no video.  Any Ideas please?

You can buy a CMOS battery on eBay for $5 or thereabouts. They are shared across most of the ThinkPad models.
The only exceptions that I can remember - which require a different battery - are 701C/Cs, TransNote, 600 series and R40.
In other words, 99% of the ThinkPad CMOS batteries will work just fine in your R52.

  • Startup beeps

on my new msi 845 pe 6580 board I get about 10 really fast beeps at the same time as the screen shows that the side cover is off. The side cover off is not mentioned in the bios. I dont know if the beeps are for the side off error as there is no mention anywhere or if there is another fault.
    Have I brought a DUD!!!!

Isn't there a case intrusion alarm item in the bios?

  • Mpower Max startup Beep

Hi is this board supposed to give one beep on boot up or only beep if there is a problem. Or do I have to set bios to use it.
    Thank You
    John McCormick

no problem hammey... people tend to find the high pitch beep concerning as alot of people only like them as debug codes so the single beep is removed for post (older computers used to have them but newer boards very rarely have one) - if you want to make sure beeps for debug work turn off your computer and take out the RAM (put them on a piece of cardboard) and see if it beeps when powered on like that and it should do a few beeps to say it has no RAM and once your happy it works for that put them back in again!

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Three beeps at startup indicate 'no good banks', meaning the system can't access the RAM.
It may be that your RAM itself is bad, or that it has come unseated. It could also indicate a more serious motherboard fault which prevents the RAM being accessed, but that is unlikely.
If you have opened the mini in the past it may be that the best way to check is to do so again and ensure the RAM is properly seated by removing it and reinserting. If you replaced the original RAM and still have the original stick, try putting that back in. Also note that Macs are typically very sensitive to RAM incompatibilities, and there have been cases where systems fail as yours appears to have done for no reason other than that a RAM stick was marginal in compatibility.
If you upgraded the RAM yourself and bought the replacement stick from a source such as Crucial.com which permits unconditional exchanges, contact them and arrange to have the memory replaced.
