Startup Capability:  default, auto-open of application

Is there a preference setting that would cause auto-opening of a particular application every time I start-up my iMac? For example, I would like to force myself to see my To-Do list in Stickies without request.

you can add an application to your login items in system preferences->accounts->login items. it will start automatically on every login.

Please help with the message I am receving on startup ""You can't open the application NovamediaDiskSupressor because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
I have read some of the replies in the Apple Support Communities, but as I am no techie, I would have no idea how I would implement that solution.
Please help with what I need to type, how, where, etc.
    Many thanks

I am afraid there is no solution.
PowerPC refers to the processing chip used by Apple before they transferred to Intel chips. They are very different, and applications written only for PPC Macs cannot work on a Mac running Lion.
You could contact the developers to see if they have an updated version in the pipeline.

  • I want to open a domain.site2 file outside the default folder (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb) with iWeb11, but iWeb only opens the domain file in the default folder. If I delete the default domain file, iWeb wants to create a new site. Help please

I want to open a domain.site2 file outside the default folder (User/Library/Application Support/iWeb) with iWeb11, but iWeb only opens the domain file in the default folder. If I delete the default domain file, iWeb wants to create a new site. Does anyone have the same problem or know how to fix it?

In Lion the Finder folder is now invisible.  To make it permanetely visible enter the following in the Terminal applicaiton window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files  Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an applicaiton.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate

  • Open CC applications to default preferences with no user input

I am searching for a way to open CC applications to default preferences with no user input. I understand there is a key board short cut (command/option/shift on start) but I am hunting for a way to have the preferences always revert to default. In the past I have written a script to delete the preference files upon computer start up but once again, it needs to be rewritten. Is there a method that does not require KLUDGE?

  • You can't open the application "..." because it is not supported on this type of Mac.

I migrated all files from OS 10.7 to OS 10.8 through time machine. However, I always see error packages like the following if I want to run some .pkg files.
You can't open the application "..." because it is not supported on this type of Mac.
But when I switch to a different account, then the .pkg files can be run. Therefore, I think that there might be something wrong with my account configuration files. But I don't know which one. Does anybody which one might cause the problem and how to fix it? Thanks!

And both are on the same startup disk, right? Because, to be honest, it's hard to figure out how you could have this problem with both accounts on the same startup disk, so I just want to check that before we get too involved.
Assuming that's the case, the first thing I'd do is remove all those except Dropbox from the list, then restart the mac and test for the problem. If that doesn't solve it, run this free analytical tool and post the results back here so we can see if anything stands out:

I have removed these login items. But I can not restart my mac now and I will have to restart it later.
Here is the output of etrecheck. Would you please take a look if there is anything wrong?

"You can't open the application Safari because it is not supported on this type of Mac."
I vaguely remember some capability to rollback any updates. Is this true?
Where should I go from here?

First you need to clear out some space on the startup volume. You should have at least 9 GB available. Then do as follows.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

I'm on a Macbook Pro, OS X.  Whenever I open a TextEdit css file lately, it auto opens in Dreamweaver.  I've never used or saved anything to Dreamweaver so I don't know why this is happening.  It hadn't in the past.  I need to use TextEdit specifically at the moment, to code files for school assignments.

2 Ways to Change the Default Application to Open Files With in Mac OS X

  • Auto-open different forms selectively

I want to be able to open Form1 when I open my Access application manually (double-clicking it) but Form2 instead when opening it from a scheduled task (to auto-run/schedule a process on Form2 that I also want to be able to run manually after navigating
    there from Form1).
When I run Form2 via a button click on Form1, I pass OpenArgs "Manual". The code in Form2 runs automatically if Nz(OpenArgs,"Manual") = "Automatic"; that is , it runs automatically only if OpenArgs tells it to. So far, so good.
Auto-starting Form2 was also easy. I could not just open Form2 directly from a macro because (at least as far as I can tell) there is no OpenArgs option for OpenForm in a macro; however, I just created a macro that uses RunCode to run a function that opens
Form2, passing OpenArgs "Automatic". Then I just pass the macro's name with the /x MacroName command-line argument when opening the application. Again, so far so good.
Except for one thing: the only way I know (besides VBA or a macro) to auto-open a form is to set that as the default form in the current DB options. But then Form1 opens regardless of whether I open the application by double-clicking it or by using the shortcut
that includes the /x MacroName argument. This means that when auto-running the application, Form1 opens as well as Form2. No, it does not hurt anything, but I am trying to keep this as clean as possible.
I tried cancelling Form1's Form_Open event based on the value of a variable set in my auto-run function, but that did nothing to close Form1, so I infer that the default object/event priority in Access causes the form to open, and therefore its Form_Open
event to fire, before the macro calls the function that opens Form2. So now my aforementioned function sets the value of public Boolean variable AutoRun to True before opening Form2, and I check that value on Form1's timer, then close it if AutoRun = True.
And yes, I know I could create another shortcut that opens a different macro, or I could set Form1 to be invisible unless AutoRun = False. But the timer event and those all seem like workarounds. I would like to be just a bit more definite about this and
have Form1 check one time upon opening, or even some way to prevent it opening if the application is opened via my scheduler. That is, it would be great if I could embed a command in my function to tell Form1 not to open even though it is the normal default
    form.
"Can't be done" or "you're stuck with what you already tried" are OK answers (if true). This is not critical; it just piqued my curiosity on how I might accomplish this.

    Brian,
Command(), a built-in function, is available in VBA modules but cannot be called directly in the Access user interface (for example, a macro or text box control source). As a workaround, you can wrap Command() with a user-defined function created in a standard
    module:
    Public Function CmdLineArg() As String
        CmdLineArg = Command
    End Function
and then call it in the user interface like this:
=CmdLineArg()  [the equals sign is required in some contexts]
The value of Command() remains in memory until the application is closed.  You can view or modify its value in the Access 2013 user interface by navigating to:
    File tab > Options > Client Settings > Advanced > Command-line arguments:
    or with these VBA methods:
    Application.SetOption "Command-Line Arguments", "SomeText"
    Application.GetOption("Command-Line Arguments")
Calling Command() directly where necessary would simplify code development and maintenance.

  • Hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help?

hi when i open my application folder, all the application is shown in trash folder. when i click the application it says this app is in trash first move it out. and when i try to open through finder> go it says this file doesn't exist. can some1 plz help? how can i put all my application through application folder?

Something really odd is going on. In your first screen shot, I noticed that the Applications folder does not have the proper icon displayed in the side bar. Also, in the title bar it lists it as Applications 08-59-29-909.
Not sure where it's picking up that odd name, unless it's because it's still truly within the Trash folder.
Try this. In the Finder > Preferences > General > turn on "Always open folders in a new window". (I have a feeling you have the default setting with this off).
Now, in Finder > Go > move down and open the Applications Folder from there. Now open the folder where you see all your applications that you show in your screen shot, select all, and move them to this true appliactions folder.
This is what you should properly seeing (but with different apps listed):
See how the Applications folder has the icon of the letter A shaped with a pencil, ruler & pen.

  • How to change default to open attachments

How do I change the default that opens attachments? For me it's Textedit which is fine but for my wife who has her own profile on same computer it's AbiWord for some reason, and it's terrifically slow. I have looked in Help, Missing Manual, etc but no luck, I'm sure I did know the answer at one stage.
    Thanks,
    Michael

Select one of the affected files then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select the desired application from the drop down menu, then click on the Change All button. This will cause all similar files to be opened by the selected application.
An alternative or rather an extension to the above is to download the freeware RCDefaultApp preference pane and install it. It will let you set defaults for just about everything. A very handy bit of software.

  • "You do not have permission to open the application....."

I'm getting the above error message when trying to launch an install application from CD, from a managed user account.
I can launch it successfully from the admin user account - but then of course I can't install in the correct user account properly.
The permission on the CD appear to grant everyone read and execute permissions on the application so It seems to be something in the User configuration but I can't see what I'm missing
    Any suggestions?

The wording of that message is one of my pet peeves (before this it was referring to "Login Items" as "Startup Items" prior to "Tiger"). It bothers me because despite the message, "permissions" have nothing to do with why a user is unable open that application. Of course, "permissions" can affect a user's ability to run a programme, which makes the message more misleading. A parent would normally be expected to have a lot more important things to do than read up on the nuances of "permissions" vs. user management / 'mcx_settings' or hanging out on forums, so the elimination of obvious sources of confusion like this is something I would have expected the old user friendly Apple to strive for.
Anyway, that message appears when a "Some Limits" user attempts to launch an application that the "admin" has not selected in the "Accounts" pref pane ("approved", perhaps, which is the term used in 'mcx_settings') for use by the user. Hence the user is not "alllowed" to use it. In this case, it could be that "/Applications" > "Utilties" > "Installer.app" needs to be added to the "AccessList", or if it is a stand alone installer, the item on the CD may need to be added explicitly through the "Accounts" pref pane, in order for the "managed" user to be allowed to at least start the installer themselves.
However, installation by a non-admin in the "/Applications" folder would require an "admin" password anyway, so as "macjack" has suggested, installing from the "admin" account is probably the best course. I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to rant about that stupid message...

I installed Lion 10.7.4.     Went to use Photoshop Cs and got a popup window.  You can't open the application Adobe Photoshop CS because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.    Is there a way of getting this to work or do I have to get newest version of all of my Power PC apps?

    Welcome to Apple Communities
PowerPC applications are unsupported in newer versions. You can upgrade Photoshop or you can install Snow Leopard in a partition.
    1. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) and select your drive
    2. Go to Partitions tab, press + button, create a new partition and press Apply
    3. Insert the Snow Leopard install DVD and reboot pressing C key
    4. Install it in the new partition
    5. If you want to change boot, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select 10.7

  • Opening an application

I understand that i can open an application (e.g. WINWORD.EXE) using the Runtime class. I was wondering how we could open a particular file that belongs to the application (e.g. test.doc).
The reason i wish to know is because, i have a labview VI that i want to detect whether it is open or not. I need to detect this because, if the VI ceases to be open, another java application i have written calls a pager. I looked in to this and the options available were to use Win API to keep track of windows event list or to use JNI. Both the options seem a bit complicated for now. Therefore i wish to open the labview file using a java application that will use threading to keep track of its activity.
    Thanks in advance.

To open the file "test.doc" wou wold run the command "Winword.exe test.doc"
To tell what command to run for each filetype, so Start->Run... and type "regedit"
open "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" and look for your extension (eg ".doc") and select it.
Note down what it says after "(Default)", in this case "Word.Document.8"
Look for "Word.Document.8" under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and open it.
Then open "shell", "open" and select "command"
Note down what it says after "(Default)", replacing "%1" with your filename.
This is the command you have to run.
Doing all this registry stuff from java is most likely impossible as it is windows-specific, and java is platform-inspecific. You can do it in any platform-specific language, like VB and C++.
