Startup disk ask me 2 times for password (authenticaton)

First thanks for read my question, so here is my problem I startup from my external hardrive and evrything was normal and I starup from it like three times because I copy some files from it and then I copy some file from my internal disk to the external, but my problem is that when I finish to tranfer my files back and foward sudendly if I try to startup from any of the disks the external or internal via *systempreeference/startup disk/ when I click on the lock the authentication window appears so I enter my password when hit enter or ok the same windo appears again (2 time) and if I click on cancel the lock unlocks so there is my problem why appears two times and why unlocks if I click on cancel the secon time it appears.*
Trobelshot
delet many .plist
restart the computer
creat a new user account does the same
repair permission
reset P-ram
reset PMU
is only in that lock the others work well
Thanks

ok something new that maybe can help if I go to system preference/security and unchek Require password to unlock each secure system preference then when I open system preference/starup disk and unlock the lock I only have to enter the password one time. But I like to have the (Require password to unlock each secure system preference) chek. In a separate note I try to reset my password from the installing DVD to see if that fixed the problem but guess what I can't reset my password from my installing DVD here is the link to my other thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1316202&tstart=0)

  • Ask one/first time for password in Xcode/applescript app?

    Hello,
    I've an app, that's replacing/deleting/copying files a lot.
The annoying thing is that each time finder (or gives my app finder the command to) replaces/deletes/copy files,
finder(/my app) ask for the user password... And 'each time' is a lot in my app...
I understand I can't disable this security measure, but is there a way it only ask when my apps starts?
I know it's possible, because I saw it somewhere in a app...
    Thanks in advance,
    Isaiah
P.S. Isn't it weird, the 'asks for password'-dialog says 'Finder wants to replace/delete/copy files', but when you do that trough Finder, the dialog doesn't show up ...

It looks like you are placing your application support files in a location that the user doesn't have access for - normally, you should be using the acount that is running the application.  See the File System Programming Guide.
There are methods (both Cocoa and Standard Additions) to get paths to the various default locations that you should look at using.  For example, my startup disk is not named "Macintosh HD", so your application fails at just about everything on my machine.
BTW, using NSOpenPanel will avoid that annoying choose file bug.

  • "Your Mac OS X Startup Disk Has No More Space For Application Memory"

I've been having a problem in the last few days with my Mac. I would be surfing the net, or doing whatever, and an error message would randomly pop up on my screen. It would say: "_Your Mac OS X Startup Disk Has No More Space For Application Memory_". Then the dialog box would give me the option to PAUSE or *Force Quit* applications. But instead of letting me click these buttons, my Mac would just automatically freeze after the dialog box popped up!
The odd thing is, is that I truly was NOT using that much memory...much less than I usually do. Plus I have 4 GB of RAM, and I know I wasn't maxing it out.
Does anyone know why this error message would be popping up like this (especially since there was no way that I was using all my Application Memory)? And does anyone know why my Mac just freezes instantly when the error message pops up?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! It's quite hard use my Mac right now, since I never know when it's gonna freeze up on me!
    Thanks!

I assume that means no backups? That's a problem you need to fix next.
You might be able to start your Mac in "Target Disk Mode" while connected to the other Mac. You do this by holding down the "T" key while booting. And I was wrong: you must use Firewire, not USB.
The other Mac will see your HD as an external F/W drive. You may have to "mount" it via Disk Utility, if it doesn't show up on the desktop and/or Finder sidebar.
You probably need to do a lot of examining what's not needed, and perhaps some maintenance, but you don't want to do that under pressure.
To get it running and buy just a bit of time, your best bet is to copy some big stuff (like video) either to the other Mac's hard drive or to one or more DVDs, then delete it from your HD.
Once you get several GB free, you should be able to boot it. Then get started cleaning it up. There are many threads in this forum with links and suggestions for how to do this. Just search for +Disk Full.+
Did this happen all of a sudden? If so, it's possible you had some sort of runaway or continually failing process, filling up some logs and/or caches. If you don't do routine maintenance, either by clearing your browser cache, etc., manually, or via an app like OnyX, that's another thing you might want to investigate.

  • Startup disk has no more space for application memory - itunes using 19GBytes!

I am having intermittent but recurring issues with the dialog "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space for application memory" and iTunes is listed as not responding. Activity Monitorsays iTunes consuming on various instances 16 and 19GBytes etc.
    Any ideas??
System is a ~ 6month old 27" late 2012 iMac with OS X 10.8.4 32 GBytes RAM and 3TB disk with 2TB free. App Store says no updates.

Read this whole message before doing anything.
    Back up all data.
    Quit iTunes if it’s running.
    Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash, if they exist:
    Caches/com.apple.iTunes
    Caches/QCCompositionRepository-com.apple.iTunes.cache
    Saved Application State/com.apple.iTunes.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try iTunes again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
    Step 2
If you still have problems, quit iTunes again. Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
    iTunes
Note: you are not moving the iTunes application. You’re moving a folder named “iTunes.”
Test. If iTunes now works, delete the iTunes folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit iTunes again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place, and continue.
    Step 3
In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with either of the following strings:
    com.apple.iTunes
    com.apple.mobile.iTunes
Move them all to the Desktop.
Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.
Test again. This time iTunes should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. You may be able to put back some of the files you moved to the Desktop in this step. Relaunch and test after each one. Eventually you should find one or more that causes iTunes to malfunction. Delete those files and recreate whatever settings they contained.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit iTunes again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post again.
If you later decide that you don’t like the results of steps 2 and 3, you can undo them completely by quitting iTunes and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup.

  • Using Time Machine Backup as a Startup Disk IT WOULD BE USEFUL FOR ME!!!

I'd like to be able to connect my external hard drive with TIME MACHINE BACKUP on it to other computers when I am not at home and use it as a BOOTABLE DISK! I looked in disk utility and it said it was bootable, but when I started up my computer and held down the key to choose my startup disk, the so called "BOOTALBE" disk did not appear.
Is it possible to boot up off of time machine backups without copying data???

You can't - once posted in a particular discussions area, that is where it remains - unless a moderator moves it to the appropriate area, or a more appropriate area.

  • FileVault 2 encryption for the startup disk not a good idea for server?

    Hello,
in the Mac OS X Lion help files it states the following:
With Mac OS X Lion Server, encryption isn’t recommended for the startup disk or any disk that stores service data. If these disks are encrypted, the server can’t restart until you go to the server and enter the password at the server’s keyboard. If you use Lion Server to share an encrypted disk, the disk isn’t available to users until you enter the password at the server’s keyboard.
Does this also apply to regular Mac OS X Lion? I would like to be able to wake up my iMac from sleep through SSH, and occasionally be able to restart the system remotely if I need to. If the above is true it seems like it would disable me from doing this.
    Thanks

    Does anyone have an answer?

  • Yosemite server Profile manager how setup time for password after sleep

    Hi,
In Profile Manager in Setup & Privacy is possibility setup password after sleep, but I need setup time period. Is it possible? Because when I push this profile it prevent users to setup this period and when i remove this profile (whole payload for Security & Privacy) it still prevent users to change this two setting.

    Hi CodyCodes,
Just discovered the same issue today as well.  Further complicating things, the screensaver timeout setting in Login Window doesn't apply to Profile Manager clients no matter what the setting.  This was reproduced and confirmed by the Apple Tech I was working with.  He's submitted the bug to their engineering staff.  I requested that he ask them why there is no setting for password on sleep or screensaver.  Hopefully this is resolved soon, as this feature is 99% of the reason we're implementing Profile Manager to begin with.

  • I have virtually no space left in my startup disk and it keeps declining in available free space?

Ok fellow Mac people - why would my 500GB start up hard drive suddenly go from 489BG of space free to about 2BG free, and it declines in free space until I reboot the computer. Even after rebooting though it shows I barely have 3GB of space free. It has declined all the way down to 19MB free on my computer at one point!
My time machine backup goes back until Oct 26th and I did not have the problem at that time. The startup disk on that date is at it's normal capacity. Since the 26th of October I have upgraded to OS 10.7 and installed a trial of GoToMeeting - no changes other than that and my normal use. I have emptied the trash and got rid of a bunch of excess files I didn't need anymore as well, but that hasn't helped really.
Any suggestions on what is happening? And, if I go back to the 10/26 startup disk image on the time machine will that affect any other partitions or drives on my computer? I don't want to lose any work that has been done and saved to other drives since then.
    Thanks
    Liz

I am not familiar at all with that software; however, since your problems appear to have started after you installed it, I would very seriously consider uninstalling it using their uninstaller (if there is one) and/or do a thorough search of the entire hard disk for files containing that name. I'd also consider getting Omnisweeper to check my disk:
    http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/
If you find that you have all your hard drive space back, then there is obviously something going on with that software.

  • Why does Windows 7 not show up in System Preference's "Startup Disk"

Why does Windows 7, installed via Boot Camp, show up when you hold down the option key when booting but the drive does not show up in System Preferences under the Startup Disk icon.
As an aside Windows 7 runs perfectly on my MacBook.
    - Mike

Now I found I'm not alone. My situation is similar but not exactly the same.
I recently switched from the white MacBook to latest mac mini, tried installing XP Pro not successful for some reasons then tried Win7 (build 7000). On my old macbook this worked perfectly.
Got win7 updated and picked win7 as startup disk in windows, used that for few days without going back to leopard. On just one occasion I booted with 'alt' key pressed (using a PC keyboard) I have choices of drives so I thought everything was fine. As soon as I booted into leopard I found no win7 partition in system>preference>startup disk, OMG I couldn't boot back to win7 since then. From that point onwards the 'alt' key didn't work for me. Every time only leopard can be booted.
    What can I do now?
Why it was OK in macbook but didn't work on mini? Is it worth investing on a mac external keyboard just to get the 'option' key?

  • No windows disk in the startup disk list

    Hi there,
I installed Windows vista on my Macbook and it works great.
My problem is when I need to switch the OS, there are only Mac OS and Network startup in the startup disk list. The icon for windows is gone. It was there several days ago. Now what I can do is pressing down the option button and select windows every time.
I do some search in the forum and found someone talk about resetting the PRAM.
I followed the instruction but it does not help.
Could you please tell me what should I do?
    Thanks a lot.

You may not have to remove it.
The Windows disk vanishing from the Startup Disk options is a known issue though.
    Does this help?

  • Startup Disk is Locked?

I'm working on an older Mac (G3 Blue & White PowerPC w/OS 8.6) for a customer and there are many problems. The one I'm facing now is an error that reads "Startup Disk is locked. Your changes will not be saved when you quit Sherlock. This happened when I clicked Sherlock in the Apple Menu.
I'm wondering if this problem is causing the other problems as well. Some of those include will not boot to original desktop without the OS CD. Missing .Pics folder...this being the most critical loss. Startup Disk and Apple Talk are the only two Control Panels. Chooser, Control Panels and Sherlock are the only things in the Apple Menu.
I've retrived her documents from the hard drive but not the pictures.
I'm kinda new to Mac's (if you haven't noticed) but learning everyday!
    Love em'
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    PhilW
Dual 867 MHz PowerPC G4 Mirrored Door   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1GB DDR Ram, 80 GB HD

    Hi, PhilW -
...will not boot to original desktop without the OS CD.
It sounds like the machine is being booted to the OS Install CD.
Startup Disk and Apple Talk are the only two Control Panels. Chooser, Control Panels and Sherlock are the only things in the Apple Menu.
Those are the only items of those kinds included in the OS on an OS Install CD.
Although an OS Install CD will install a more complete OS, with a full assortment of control panels, Apple Menu items, extensions, etc., the OS on the CD, which is what is running the machine when the machine is booted to the CD, has a very limited assortment of them.
The one I'm facing now is an error that reads "Startup Disk is locked. Your changes will not be saved when you quit Sherlock.
That is not an error. When the machine is booted to a CD, the CD is the startup disk. Since such a CD can not be written to under any circumstances (which is one of their advantages), it is, in effect, a locked disk.
With the machine booted to the CD, have you tried selecting the OS on the hard drive in the Startup Disk control panel? It may be that the CD was the last boot volume set in that control panel, hence set in PRAM; and that is why it seems not able to boot unless the CD is in the drive. Resetting the boot volume in Startup Disk would be the solution for that.
If there is no selectable OS on the hard rive presented in Startup Disk, that would indicate one of three things -
    • The System Folder on the hard drive has become 'unblessed'. The solution for that is to re-bless it. To do that, go to the System Folder on the hard drive (not the one on the CD). Drag the files System and Finder out onto the desktop. Close the System Folder. Drop those two files back into the closed System Folder on the hard drive.
    • The System Folder on the hard drive has become damaged in some way, to the point it is no longer capable of booting the Mac.
    • There is no valid System Folder on the hard drive.
The solution for the last two is the same - re-install the OS. You can do that while booted to the OS Install CD. Run the program Mac OS Install, and follow the prompts to do a normal (generic) install of the OS.
If there is a System Folder already on the hard drive, and it is necessary to re-install the OS, it would be wise to do a Clean Install of it. Note that a Clean Install removes nothing - it will install a brand new, 'clean' System Folder, rename the old one to Previous System Folder, and little else.

  • Time for a new PC?

Two question I am frequently asked are: "What computer is right for me?" and  "Do you accept immediate trade-ins?"  The first answer is more a matter of personal choice and need.  In other words, how do you currently use a computer? How will you grow into the capabilities of a new PC over the next two or three years? To the second question, stores do recycle but do not offer immediate trade-in or sell used equipment.  We encourage everyone to check out the value of their functional electronic devices for a credit or at least recycle items.
Recently, Best Buy has partnered with Intel to provide a tool.  The "Discover the Difference of a New PC" guide asks, "is it time for an upgrade?"  It assesses the abilities of your currently working PC as compared to a new PC.  I am impressed with how easy it is to use this website, especially if you know your current processor type and speed, amount of RAM, and amount of hard drive storage.  [Hint: right-click on "My Computer" or "Computer" and select "Properties" to find these values.]  Then the tool suggests what to shop for in a new PC and provides you average trade-in value from http://bestbuytradein.com.  From there you can click to begin selecting the Intel-based PC right for you. The only way this could be easier is if it did all the work for you.  However, isn't shopping half the fun?
