Startup Disk Being Sucked Away Before My Eyes

Hey guys,
Every time I boot up my macbook, I'll literally watch the available space in my hard drive fall to as low as 4KB. I'll empty the trash and delete some large files, only for it to almost instantaneously go away that day without me doing any work on it. It's getting to the point where I'll start a document and by the time I'm done writing it I can't save it because the hard drive space magically disappears again. Has anyone heard of this problem before and how I could stop that from happening? Or maybe a good disk cleaner program so I could get rid of unnecessary cache or large dead files? Thanks for your help.
P.S. I've lost 30mb since I started writing this message.

Hi,
You might want to check to see if you have a Dashboard Widget thats misbehaving. Since they aren't always on the screen, they're easier to overlook. Overflowing log files sounds like good bet. I've seen Safari write a lot of log messages when it has problems with an RSS feed.
Open the Console application in the Utilities folder. If you see messages scrolling rapidly, then you know there's a problem.
The other suspect is if you subscribed to pod casts in iTunes. A friend totally filled her drive with Oprah Winfrey video pod casts. It didn't take long because each one was almost 1G.

  • 1 GB Gone in 15m - Disk Space Ticking Away Before My Eyes

(I have searched the forums here and elsewhere to the best of my ability, and haven't found a discussion of rapid space loss like that here. Forgive me if I've overlooked, and thank you for pointing me in the right direction.)
My disk space is disappearing before my eyes. In the time it tooke me to right the sentence, the count went from 14.77 GB to 14.72. It's only that much because I've been moving things off the drive to create more space. Earlier it ticked all the way down to 65mb, and I couldn't start the computer anymore. I've looked at various threads about freeing space, and I'm applying those suggestions, but the problem is that the space is disappearing almost as fast as I can clear it. I used Whatsize (paid, non-appstore version), and didn't see any enormous strange folders. I did notice that, back when I was at 65mb, Disk Utility showed the disk as having 999 GB on it, while Whatsize said 984.
Any help would be very appreciated.
    2.8 ghz iMac Core i7

    Now it's at 14.19 GB!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I keep getting notifications about my Startup Disk being full...please help

I keep getting notifications about my Startup Disk being full, I've gone through and deleted a bunch of files, and burned some big projects to disks and removed them from my laptop, but I still get notifications. Can anyone help me by letting me know which kind of files would be the best to remove, and what folders would be the best to clean up to free up space?? Thanks alot!

If you have external or thumb drive, back up your data and try to install this:
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/
to see what is clogging up your HD.
And delete document files that you don't need.
Also optimize your HD and delete all of cache files using this:
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html
    delete application using appdelete:
    http://reggie.ashworth.googlepages.com/appdelete
    Good Luck.
ps: don't forget to empty the trash.

  • Getting messages "startup disk is full" and activity monitor is showing "syslog d" is using a lot of CPU.  I'm planning on getting more memory for my late 2008 model Macbook but wondering if there's something that is causing problems that I can also fix.

I had closed out of all of my programs but heard the internal fans running so I checked the activity monitor.  It shows syslog d as the top process using the CPU right now.  I have no idea what that means.
I read a thread about the startup disk being full and how you can free up memory.  I have an airport extreme so TimeCapsule is backing up everything.  I do have a bunch of pictures on iPhoto on the laptop;  could move those to another location but I'm a little gunshy.  I know they are on the TimeCapsule but I would like to save them to a second place before deleting from laptop just to be sure.  I went through several things yesterday and emptied trash, etc.  I wasn't able to locate the hidden files that the thread about the startup disk being full was referencing --- they were talking about large emails that were causing processes to happen taking up the CPU.... I wasn't able to find out if that was the case for me.
Also I'm going to look into getting another 2MB of memory and installing it on the Macbook, so I can upgrade to the latest OS.  Anyone have an idea if that is worth the $$$ over buying a new laptop?  Or anyone have ideas as to where to buy memory, etc.
    Any ideas - help!

  • Startup Disk Failure.  Can Anything be Saved?

I'm bought a used PowerMac G4 which I've been very happy with. However, I received a warning that my startup disk was failing. Before I could get a new one, it appears to have died. This computer has two hard drives (the smaller of the two was the startup disk). The 160g drive should still be working. Is there any way I can move the startup disk to the second drive? I should also mention that I get absolutely nothing on the screen when I boot up. It stays black so I can't see anything. The power light does come on and dim when I let go.
    Thanks!

    Hi, Beth!
If the SMART status of the errant drive indicated that the disk was failing, it's a very good indicator that the drive needs immediate replacement. It may be dead now, but you won't be certain until you get the Mac to successfully boot.
The power light lighting while you're depressing it and then going out when you release it is a sign that the PMU needs to be reset. I would reset the PMU, load the Tiger install disc into the optical drive, and boot to the install disc. From the installer screen, choose Disk Utility from the menubar, select your errant startup volume, and run Repair Disk & Repair Permissions. Check the SMART status of this drive at the bottom of the Disk Utility window. Please advise us if the above is successful and what the SMART staus reads.
If the errant startup drive is indeed accessible, but the SMART status indicates an impending failure, you'll need to backup the startup volume to another drive. In the interim, I'd advise you not to use the Mac until you decide how you want to proceed.
You may certainly use your 160GB drive as the startup drive. If you have an empty volume on the 160 GB drive which is large enough to hold your startup volume, you can clone the entire startup volume to it. I'd recommend using SuperDuper , but you can use Disk Utility's Restore option to do this. If you don't have a spare, empty volume on the 160GB drive, then you'll either need to backup the data which is on it now, erase the drive, and then clone/restore. (Cloning the startup volume involves erasing whatever data that is currently on the destination volume it's being cloned to.) If you don't have an empty volume available, it may be easiest and safest to instead purchase another drive for this task. If you provide info on your specific Mac model, we can better advise you on different methods/options you might consider.

  • IMAC 27 wakes up but without Startup Disk?

Put iMAC to sleep and it wakes up with normal looking desktop, but nothing activates. Unable to launch apps etc. I shut down, unplug power, then startup with option key, Startup disk displays and I click enter, and all starts up fine.... I select MAC HD in Preferences but each time I put Mac to sleep this happens it never stays selected. The selected HD startup disk always go away? I would hate to have to re-install S/W to get past this issue. I also ran Disk Utility and it repaired & verified disk and permissions, but still iMAC will not wake from sleep with normal HD startup disk. Any help please?

    Hi Nate,
The Apple guy called and we took care of this problem within 15 minutes. I will summarize for you quickly what cured it.
    1. Open ACCOUNTS in Syst. Prefs. Clicked on LOG-IN Items, deleted 5 items and closed up.
    2. Powered down Mac, unplugged all cables, USB, Firewire except Hi-Speed Modem cable.
    3. Started back up with SHIFT key. However Magic Mouse didn't work.. So Powered OFF again.
    4. Plugged all cables back in and did a normal Start Up. Booted up normal and issue is resolved
Apple Tech was great, no rushing and was easy to work with on the phone. iMAC is working great again!!
Thank you for your help, and I did ask Tech about resetting PRAM with your method, and he said it is a good idea to do this on occasion, but wouldn't have done much to cure my specific issue.
Thanks again Nate for your effort. Much appreciated! Jim

  • "Startup Disk Full" though i have 382GB available on my hard drive?

I regularly get a pop up requesting that I force quit applications due to my startup disk being full, with no more room for application memory (or something similar).
It has been popping up more and more frequently in the last couple of days, and it has got to the point where I can't use Chrome for more than a few minutes without having to quit out of it.
I have a MacBook Pro from late 2011, and I have 382.83GB free out of a total of 499.25GB on my hard drive.
I have been told that the 'startup disk' and the hard drive are essentially the same thing so why am I being notified that it is full, and what can I do about it?
I only use my laptop for browsing the internet and uni work, and I have a few photos and some music on it but nothing I can think of that would be eating up so much memory.
If anyone can help me out or point me in the direction of a solution that would be so helpful!!!

The message has nothing to do with low disk space. There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory. That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The process named "Safari Web Content" renders web pages for Safari and other applications. It uses a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider it a prime suspect.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing softwre. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • IMovie: "startup disk almost full..."

but I currently have 221GB free on my hard drive. I realise there are other threads regarding this error, but they all seem to involve people whose disks are actually full.  Mine, as indicated in Disk Utility, has 221GB available. This error only occurs when using iMovie. I am not working with HD video or doing anything really intense.  I am running the MacBook Pro Retina (2012).  This error has been occurring from the beginning and I've finally grown tired of it and decided to seek some answers.  There's no reasonable explanation that using a stock native piece of software on Apple's premier notebook should be an issue. I don't know what I could do differently.  I don't have any other applications running while iMovie is open.
    Thanks!

Well, I am back in hopes that SOMEONE has respnded to this.  I guess it's just me.  I see literally hundreds of threads on here about the startup disk being full and everyone just assumes that they guy posting is a complete idiot.  This message is appearing in ERROR.  As I stated, I recently wiped, formatted, and installed a fresh OSX on my 2012 Retina. Upon starting iMovie for the first time, I got the same message I had always seen, "Startup Disk is Almost Full".  I double checked my hard drive usage and confirmed that I still had 221GB free.   221GB free.
221GB of unused space on the disk.
221GB of unused space on the disk.
There are 221GB of free space on my startup disk.
My startup disk is NOT almost full, as more than half of it is empty, leaving 221GB unused.  To put it another way, my hard drive currently has 221GB of unused space.  As it stands today, 221GB of my startup disk are available for new data.  When I start iMovie, an error comes up telling me that my startup disk is almost full but there is 221GB of open space on the disk.
In case I failed to clearly state the problem, my hard drive is more than half empty - 221GB free - and iMovie tells me its almost full.

  • Partition Startup Disk

Ok, so this might be a stupid question, but I want to know.
I have an old Mac HD running Snow Leopard, and if I put it in an adapter, and restart my iMac, choosing the startup disk being the old hard drive, then it starts up in Snow Leopard (my iMac is running Mountain Lion). So my question is: is there any way to create a partition and then copy my old hard drive to the new partition and be able to start up in that?
The reason I want to is because it is faster if its running off of the internal hard drive instead of the external.
    Thanks.
    SP

Of course. To do it, first you have to create a partition. You can do it easily in Disk Utility. You have all the steps in the Pondini's website > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Remember to format the partition with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in Format.
Then, you have to clone the old hard disk onto this new partition. To do it, choose your old hard drive in the sidebar, go to Restore tab, drag your new partition to "Destination" and press "Restore". Read > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html
After that, you will be able to start Snow Leopard holding the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting

Forget the iTunes crash for the time being. Receiving this message is serious, and you need to take action. While the notion that Mac OS X needs 10% or 15% or whatever percentage of your hard disk free is an urban legend, it is nevertheless true that it does need free space; how much depends on your machine and what you do with it. At the very basic level, you should aim to have no less than ~5GB free at all times. See

for tips on reclaiming disk space.

I press option when starting up my computer and it just hangs or at least never gives me the list of startup disks before it's booted up. I can choose which startup up disk when I'm already booted up from settings --> Startup Disk but how do I know if my Macintosh HD internal drive disk fails I'll be able to boot from my supposedly bootable backup drive?
What am I missing? I have the latest Mountain Lion, could this be bug in that new Op System?
Does the startup drive list (before bootup) only show up if the Macintosh HD is not bootable (crashed or broken)?

Replugging my keyboard into my front USB2 slot was half the solution. I had my keyboard plugged into a KVM switch which goes into the back. The other half was that I needed to unplug my backup firewire hard drive from the front port to a chained drive with the source hooked into the back of the Mac Pro. Not sure if it was the cable or the firewire slot that gummed up the hardware startup hard drive selection diaglog.
I also tried resetting the NVRAM and only got one Mac startup sound. That didn't seem to do it but then again it could of been a necessary condition as well.
    Thanks everyone for your help.

    Hi moon_junior;
Since your PB G4 is based on the PPC chip and the Mac Pro is based in the Intel chip, there is no way for the G4 to recognize the code on the Mac Pro startup disk.

    Hi
You won't be able to start up your Mac Pro from your Powerbook drive since one uses Intel disk partitioning and the other uses old-style Apple partitioning.
As you've found, you can still read the drive as a storage drive.

    Hi,
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Then Repair the backup Disk... any change?

  • USB flash drive not being recognized as a startup disk?

Hi everyone, I've been searching for similar questions but haven't found one that exactly matches my experience.  So, I'm going to try and explain my issue in hopes that others may be able to help.
I'm trying to create a bootable flash drive from which I can install lion, and eventually Mountain Lion when it is released onto my main hard drive.  My main reason for doing this is  to have a way that I can perform a clean install of the operating system.  Yes, I know I am old fashioned, but sometimes I prefer clean operating system installs rather than upgrading.  In any case, I have downloaded the lion setup file from the Mac app store (Install Mac OS X Lion.app) and am following the directions given on this page to do this procedure.  These directions are consistent with directions found on various other sources online.  Having this file saved to my hard drive, I was able to find and extract the disk image file from the package InstallESD.dmg to another folder.  Once extracted, I plugged in my flash drive and attempted to use disk utility to restore the disk image to my flash drive.  I selected the dmg file as my source and the flash drive as the destination.  I then clicked restore and was warned that all data on the flash drive would be erased while the disk image was restored to my flash drive.  I was prepared for this, so I allowed the process to continue, and it appeared to proceed with no problem.  When disk utility was finished, I did a quick look at my flash drive using finder and confirmed that it did in fact appear to contain a disk image of the .dmg file.  Here's where things get interesting however.
When I go to system preferences and choose startup disk, my flash drive is not listed as an optional disk from which to boot, only my hard drive ("macintosh HD").  When I restart and hold down the option key, my flash drive is not listed as a startup disk either.  I know that the non-intel based macs are not capable of booting from USB, but this is certainly not my issue as I have an intel macbook pro, mid 2009 model.  My flash drive is about 4 or 5 years old; it is a PNY Technologies Attaché 16 gb flash drive.  I have no trouble viewing and transferring files to and from the flash drive, the only issue is that my computer seems to refuse to recognize it as a startup disk.  Are there certain flash drives which do not support booting?  This would normally seem more like a computer issue rather than a flash drive issue, but most people seem to have no problem doing what I'm trying to do.  Unfortunately I do not have another flash drive with which to test this, and I didn't really feel like buying another flash drive just to test this out if in fact this is not a flash drive issue.  I am planning to upgrade to the macbook pro retina soon which of course does not have an optical drive, which is one of the reasons I would like to get this working.  Can anyone think of something else I can try?  Is it more likely an issue with the macbook pro or the flash drive?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

The format says Mac OS Extended.  All of the settings were set during the disk image restore process.  Even if I format the flash drive as extended journaled or some other format, all of these settings are reverted when I do the restore from the disk image.  I will just copy all of the information that disk utility has so that you can see it.
