Startup Disk not there when reinstalling OSX (Early 2013 MBP retina)

I had reinstalled the OSX on my MBP a few times so I am not unfamiliar with the process of rebooting from the boot menu, formatting via the disk utility and then reinstalling either via a backup or from the internet backup (as the retina does not have a dvd drive).
Doing it this time and I did nothing different, however upon entering the disk utility screen, the main disk image simply wasn't there. I was conducting a reinstall of OSX from the internet and had already downloaded the new software, as you have to do when installing from the internet. I then came to the disk utility screen, ready to reformat the hard drive and it simply wasn't there at all. The only image there was the one I had just downloaded ready to install.
Thinking this extremely strange, I reboot the computer and it takes ages, then comes to a screen with a continually flashing folder symbol with a question mark in it. I have left it like this for 30 mins with no change.
So now, I cannot boot normally, and I cannot reinstall a downloaded image on the main SSD because it is not showing at all in the disk utility.
I have plugged in an external hard drive and am currently installing a new image on this to try to check where the main hard drive is once it is up and running, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
As mentioned, it is an early 2013 MBP retina, the warranty is up so cannot take it back to apple.

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. Use 2nd link if not near an Apple Store or aren’t in the US.

  • Difference between late-2012 and early-2013 mbp retina 13"?

I just bought the early-2013 mbp retina from the refurbished section of the mac site.
It seems to be v. difficult to get detailed info on this model. Most web queries about aspects of this model bring up info on the late-2012 model.
Is this some sort of freak model that was a limited run?
One of the main reasons I ask is that I have a 512gb SSD, and I'm looking to replace it with the 768gb SSD module. The SSD module I am looking to buy advertises itself as being compatible with the late-2012, but no mention of early-2013.
The late-2012 and early-2013 share the same model number (A1425), should I assume they carry the same architecture under the hood?
    **Before you reply**
    - Yes, I know I'm not supposed to open the computer, might void the warranty etc.
    - No, I didn't have the option of the 768gb SSD when I bought it, it was already assembled. I got it cheap.
    - Yes, I am aware that SSD upgrade is an expensive option.
    - Yes, I am aware I can store additional data on an external HDD.
    - Yes, I am aware I can boot from a higher capacity external HDD.
    - No, I don't want to know about alternative options, just the one outlined in the original query.
    Thanks.

  • Flash won't install after downloading...early 2013 MBP/Retina, 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz Ram, 3GHz Intel Core i7 Processor (clean installation)

Flash Player won’t install after downloading
On the first attempt to install v14, Flash Player v13 was installed and working fine.
I opened the installation package for the new Flash Player, followed standard protocol for installing Mac software and it hung before retrieving anything.
Subsequently, while watching the beach ball spin, I got an error message that the installer could not retrieve the v13 Flash Player software.
So I uninstalled Flash Player 13 and again attempted to install v14, only to see the spinning beach ball followed by a message that the installer could not retrieve the v14 Flash Player software.
    I am running OS X v10.9.4 on an early 2013 MBP/Retina display with 3GHz Intel Core i7 processor and 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz Ram.
If you have any ideas or suggestions regarding my issue, please let me know.
    Sincerely.

  • Graphics concern with early 2013, MBP Retina 15 2.4 i7

I was having issues with my graphics glitching / stuttering (if that makes sense) when scrolling zooming. All my icons across the bottom would almost vibrate as the cursor past over them. Anyway, the good guys as Apple Genius (after id done the AHT / PRAM) replaced my machine like for like with a brand new early 2013 model (slight upgrade to 2.4).
Anyway - I also have the new IMAC - My problem is this; I use google earth. I have this installed to both my MBPR and IMAC. On my IMAC it works faultlessly, smooth and as it should. On my MBPR however it is very glitchy, the screen stutters as i zoom in and move around. It is almost as if the graphics cannot cope.
This new machine is 24hrs old, straight out of the box with OS X 10.8.3 - Does anyone have any ideas of what i can do? Surely this cannot be the way it is for a £2000 machine? I am no Apple expert and recently converted so have everythning apple. I purchased the Retina Pro as my expectations were that it would be the all singing and dancing machine - Any help, suggestions as to what i can do would be fantastic.
Surely this cannot be a faulty machine? The only common thing between this and my last machine is the time machine back up!

Just for info - incase its relevant:
My IMAC is the following model which works pefectly with google earth.
    21.5-inch: 2.9GHz
    2.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB (two 4GB) memory
    1TB hard drive1
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB
My Macbook is the following model - Same google earth download, but graphics are really glitchy, stuttery when zooming in or out.
    15-inch: 2.4GHz
    with Retina display
    2.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.4GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    256GB flash storage1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
    Built-in battery (7 hours)2
dont know if any of this info is relevant but im trying to provide all the info i can!
    Hope someone can assist!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine should be enough to make a backup of your files. Also, it should back up all folders, so open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and make sure that there are no folders included in the excluded items list.
If you want to create a bootable clone of your hard drive, you need to use an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or the Disk Utility's Restore feature > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html

  • Not able to reinstall OSX Snow Leopard - broken hard drive?

    Hi!
So I have the following problem, that I would like to have some help with.
Until recently my iMac (early 2008, 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2 gb ram, 24") has been running with OSX and Windows 7 in bootcamp. All of the sudden, I was not able to boot OSX; when trying to do this the computer stalls on a grey screen with a loading bar in the bottom (like this http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10387698-263.html). I decided to reinstall OSX, but it was not possible. Everytime I tried to select the hard drive during installation the computer instantly goes into grey screen.
Being pretty stuck here, I then continued to formatting and reinstalling Windows 7. I have now been running RAM test and there are not visible problems. Also I am still not able to reinstall OSX even after a format. It leads me to think that the hard drive may be close to dying.
Does anyone have some similar experiences? Opinions?
    Best regards, Mikkel

So, I decided to run some diagnostics:
I am not sure that I decipher the numbers correctly, but the four pre-failures on top seems threatening. Am I right?

  • Startup Disk not recognizing Windows disk

I had a working Snow Leopard installation with Windows XP on a separate disk. Bootcamp worked correctly. I reinstalled Snow Leopard on the primary disk and now Startup Disk will not recognize the Windows disk, although holding down Option at startup recognizes both disks and using Startup Disk on Windows recognizes the OSX partition.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
BTW, I do not have any NTFS software running on under OSX.
    Thanks,
    Mitch

I'm having the same issue except with Windows 7. Mac OS X refuses to see my NTFS partition.

I lost an xcel doc a couple of days ago. Tried to find the Library folder in Users but not there when I use Finder (even when I do shift-command-G). But when trying to upload a photo in iphoto I found the library folder in Users. I can see my doc in Office 2011 Autorecovery, but can't access it! How do I get User to show Library then I can get to my long lost document?

The auto recovery dat should be in the Microsoft User Data folder in your documents folder, not in the Library. However, I Haven't had to look recently.

  • FCE Express is writing render files to startup disk not external hard drive

    Hi
I'm using FCE Express HD 3.5.1, with a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB memory.
I'm using a Lacie big disk extreme as my scratch disk, and FCE is set up to write all render files to this. However, I noticed that my startup disk was becoming full and realised that FCE is writing render files to the startup disk not the external hard drive.
    I've quit, shut down, etc...
Any ideas what is going on?
    Many thanks
    Helen

Whenever FCE is behaving strangely, one thing to try is trashing the preferences. Here's how:

I'm using weblogic 6.0 for AIX.
I'm trying to setup a new web application.
Right now, I just want to access html files, but the web server is not working
    well.
    I can access the file
    http://myhost/myapp/index.html
but if I try to access file2.html
    http://myhost/myapp/file2.html
file2.html is in the same directory, with the same permissions and I get
    the 404
    error message
At the beginning, I couldn't access index.html, because I created the directory
    "myapp"
with user "root". Later, I changed the ownership to "wlowner" for "myapp"
    directory
    and for "index.html"
Then I created "file2.html" with user "wlowner", and provided the same permissions
    as index.html but I can't access it.
Could someone tell what might be wrong ?
    Any clues ?
    Thanks,

  • Why is iPhoto reporting my startup disk  is full when it clearly is not?

I recently had a system crash and used Time Machine for a backup. All is going well...except iPhoto does not recognize my iphoto library - well each event has a greyed out box with dasjed lines under it. I followed the advice on one forum, copied the "Masters" folder after applying "Open Package Contents" to the library. iPhot started to import these files but stopped...giving me an error message that my stratup disk was almost full. As it happens I have a 500GB hard drive with 140GB remaining...so it can't be "almost full".
When I connect my iPhone to my computer I receive the same message..."startup disk is almost full"
Is there some way of uninstalling iphot and starting again?? Something is "corrupt" in denmark....to quote the bard
I am running 10.7.3 on a 2.2 GHZ Intel COre I7 macbook pro, 8 GB ram - and have been running along without any problems whatsoever with iPhot or any othe rproblems
    cheers
    john

well i solved the problem by deleting my old iphoto library (having extracted the conten tform it), restarting iPhoto, creating a new Library when it prompet me to, then importing the above files. No warning messages about insufficient disk space.

  • Why is my Macbook pro with OS lion prompting me my startup disk almost full when i have deleted many files, photos and videos? Even thrashing them doesn't help. There seems to be an automatic space usage in the background

I have deleted many unwanted files and apps and yet the available space keeps depleting every time i am using my Macbook Pro. I believe under the OS 10.7.4 one of the features is it backups or has backgrounding features which uses memory. Sometimes even when i hv 8GB space after using my Macbook Pro for say 2hrs surfing internet and using Pages which has a "Save Version" feature suddenly my 8GB goes down to 300+MB only and it starts prompting me "My Startup Disk is almost full" once it reaches 1GB space left. How can i get more space.... Please someone can help me? Do i need to re-format my hardisk??!! Any help out there is greatly appreciated.
My original HD is 320GB. And i don't hv too many Apps installed. I do have abt 50-70apps. I do have many photos and videos stored in iPhoto's Library though.

One thing I've noticed is that a shared tab pops up when I open the finder under "favorites" with a random connection. It's called hp68b... None of my friends that I live with have this and we all use the same internet. Two days ago when I would click it and click get info, it said it was a pc. When I checked it today it said it is a "sharepoint" and looks like a harddrive.
I took it too the store after i spilt water on it but when I got it back it ran perfectly fine. I don't know a lot about computer so if somebody could help me. It says I'm connected to it and I can't disconnect or delete it. I don't know if the guy at the computer store put something in my computer and is sharing all my files.

  • Startup Disk Full Error when it is not full.

When ever my swap files reach the size of the free space on my startup disk (60GB) I receive this error even though my swap files are stored on a separate disk with 500GB free. The startup disk continues to have 60GB free when this error occurs. The swap file disk has 440GB free. I know the program has a memory leak, but it should continue to run until the swap file disk is full. Please help!

If you open System Preferences and then go to the Software Update pane, you can click on the Installed Updates tab to see when various updates were installed. Look in particular for the Mac OS X Update Combined 10.5.2 and the Leopard Graphics Update; when were they installed relative to 2/23.
Three things you can do as general trouble-shooting steps, if you haven't done them already.
Run Disk Utility. Use the Repair Disk Permissions routine under First Aid tab on your internal drive.
Restart from the Mac OS X installation disk. From the Installer's Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. Use the Repair Disk routine under First Aid on your internal drive. See if that reports any problem.
Reset PRAM. Some display parameters are stored in PRAM, so this may help.

  • Windows startup disk not showing up after the boot camp is done partitioning.

OK, Boot Camp finished making a partition for windows on my SSD (I gave it 30GB), and it restarded my computer. I pressed the alt key so i could chosse the windows drive so i could begin the installation, BUT the option to open the windows drive was not there! The only otions I had was to startup from Mac OSX, Recovery Disk and a USB Flash drive Named Windows(I tried it previously but it didnt work because it didnt detect my mouse or keyboard). I the booted up from mac so i could make sure that the partition was created and it was. When i went on startup disk preferences on System Preferences the computer couldent detect a Boot Camp drive only the main Macintosh HD. What am I supposed to do?

what is your exact model mac? which windows are you trying to install?
i'm a fan of small windows partitions, but 30gb is too small unless you're absolutely sure that you will not use any major data consuming apps like music, video or gaming. also, you will HAVE to disable hibernation and the pagefile (google). the smallest we run is 35gb with 40gb being much better
does your mac have an internal optical drive? if so, you need to burn your windows iso onto a physical disc unless the newer 2013 macs let you usb install, which would be news to me
