Startup disk setting ignored if starting from off iMac

In order to speed up the performance of my system (2008 iMac 2.8 Core 2 Duo - 24 inches running Yosemite (10.10.2), I have tried to start running my system off of a spare SSD in a Firewire 800 Enclosure.  Works fine when I start the computer off of a restart, but when I shut down the system and then start it up again, the iMac automatically appears to revert to the slower, internal HD.  System preferences always indicates that the external SSD is the start up disk.  No problems show up when running disk utility.  Any ideas as to how to solve this problem?

That info is held in PRAM, so the first obvious thing to try is zapping it, and you might as well zap NVRAM at the same time. Shut down (not just a re-boot). Start up while holding down the 4 keys: Command, Option, P, R, releasing them when you hear the third 'boing'. Check Sys Prefs > Startup Disk.

  • Startup Disk Does Not Automatically Start on Boot

I have a problem booting my system. Everytime I boot or restart my macbook pro, it always shows a selection of what disk to use instead of directing to login page and it's annoying. I already set my startup disk on system preference but doesn't work. I also tried using disk utility and repair the disk and its permission and still didn't work. How can I fix this?

    Did you lock the padlock?

Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

  • After errors with disk partition, I removed Windows from my iMac. Now when I start my computer it goes into a black screen and not straight into the Mac area like it used to, unless I hold Alt straight away to give me the option.  Any help?

    Hi,
Sorry, I'm new to the community, so apologies if I'm repeating myself.
OK, so I tried to install Windows Vista onto my iMac with the disk partition.  Everything was going fine and it wasn't until last minute, when it was installed that an error came up saying that this can only be done with Windows 7.  After this error, I couldn't access any errors of my iMac and when I shut down and restarted my computer, it automatically logged into Windows.
So after a panic, I rang Apple Care and the lady helped me log into my apple area, delete Windows from my iMac, and all was restored.
However, now when I shut down my computer and boot it back up, I think my iMac is trying to log into Windows areas that no longer exist.  It loads up a black screen and doesn't move from there.  To log into my Apple area, I have to do the whole process of holding Alt immediately after I switch the power on and access the Mac drive and log in that way.
It's beginning to become a real pain and I'm paranoid this process is going to damage my computer.  Any advice on how to restore logging-in back to it's former glory when I first purchased it?
    Thanks

Solved it.  Thank you very much for that!

  • Startup Disk? Emergency? Starting up from disk?

Hi All, A friend called, he is using panther on a 12" powerbook. I suspect he threw away his HD on the desktop, or moved it to an external HD and now when starting up he just gets the spinning ball. SO... a couple questions. Help would really be appreciated since he is coming over tommorrow morning in 11 hours...yikes!
Do I have to have him start up again from the restore disk?
I am wondering if I use the T option and make his computer into a drive if I cant repair it via my powerbook somehow, such as copy the HD he moved to his external HD and then move it back again?
Or am I stuck in having to reinstall everything?
Lastly, and most importantly- if he has a slot drive, how do we get the disk into his computer? It is not the drawer opening models of the past....
Advice will be very much appreciated.
    powerbook 12" g4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Michael
If both computers are firewire enabled you can start up in target Disk Mode, so that his computer is booted from your drive. You will need a Firewire cable.
How to use FireWire target disk mode
Then from your disk utility you can run Repair Disk on his drive.

  • Best disk set-up for editing HDV on iMac G5

Are any of the G5 iMac's external interfaces (FireWire 400/USB 2.0) really fast enough for editing and playback of HDV in FCE or am I always going to suffer jerky stop-start performance? Currently using a LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB drive connected via USB which supports 'up to 60MB/s' according to spec – is this set-up going to cut it? If not, what's optimum for this iMac?

The application knows where the media is. It knows what bus it's coming from. Are you getting dropped frames in playback? Do you get an error message when you play back HDV material? There are many factors that can cause dropped frames. The error message lists some of them.

  • Startup problem - won't boot from startup disk

I have a MacPro 1,1 with 2 hard disks and 3 volumes. Disk 1 has Tiger and disk 2 has Snow Leopard plus a windows partition for Boot Camp. I am the sole user in both versions of OSX and in both accounts I have the startup disk set to Snow Leopard. Recently when I start the machine it doesn't get past the blank grey screen unless I hold the Option key to show the 3 volumes when I can pick and go.
I've run Disk Utility and repaired permissions yet nothing is fixed.
The only thing I've changed recently is to have upgraded my copy of Cinema 4D but I hardly think that can be to blame. Any suggestions?

Yes. As I wrote in my first post I am the only account holder in both my OSX volumes, Tiger and Snow Leopard, and in both I have Snow Leopard nominated as the start-up volume. Also, in my Windows XP partition (on the same hard disk as Snow Leopard) I have Snow Leopard nominated as the start-up volume in the Boot-Camp control panel. So everything I can think of in every volume on my machine is pointing towards "start in Snow Leopard", only it seems to be having trouble doing that.
As I mentioned before, if I command a restart it works OK, but if the machine is off and I press the button I get the grey screen and I have to power it off with the button then boot with the Option key to see the three volumes.
Disk Utility - Repair Disk run from my installation disk or from my hard disk reports that the disk appears fine. I have repaired permissions from my hard disk to the point that it doesn't report any repair at all.
The MacPro used to start up fine but something has changed, only I have no idea what. I was hoping someone here might be able to tell me it's this or that.

  • Can't Start from Install disk or external Hard Drive

I've installed an operating system on a external WD 120Gb hard drive. I am unable to start up from the WD Hard Drive or the Snow Leopard install disk, either by selection them from the Startup disk or by pressing 'OPTION' at startup. Every time one of these is selected, the computer starts from the MacBook internal hard Drive.
I have installed the operating system on an Iomega 1 Tb external and it doesn't show up on the Startup disk or when I start using the option key.
I have reinstalled the operating system on both the MacBook Pro Hard drive and he 120Gb portable.
I  have a 2Gb SimpleTech Dual Pro Drive, which I can see and start up by, using the Option key at system boot.
I have a 500Gb Iomega I am using for my TIme Machine.
I can't figure why I am unable to start up using the Software DVD.

Thanks for the tip. In the end I combined bits and pieces of what I had read on other peope's messages, what worked for me was putting the frozen computer to sleep with the power button and then waking it up with both the mouse and the C key held down at the same time. Individually nothing happened but with both the CD popped out.
    Thanks again,
    Jason

  • Activating Startup Disk using AppleScript

    Hi
I have an iMac that has Bootcamp Windows 7 but I mainly work on Mountain Lion. I'd like to write a script in AppleScript that will access and activate:
    SystemPreferences->StartupDisk->BootcampWindows->Restart
This causes my Mac to restart in Windows mode. I was wondering if anyone could help me in writing the script or write it out if its not too difficult.
    Thank you in advance.
    Tigran

    Adapting from here
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20070126131322301
This seems to work on my machine:
set oldDMs to AppleScript's text item delimiters
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to return
    tell application "Finder"
set diskList to get every disk as text
    end tell
set diskList to every paragraph of diskList
    set diskListMod to {}
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to oldDMs
set _n to the count of diskList
    repeat _n times
set i to first item of diskList
set i to characters 1 thru -2 of i as string
set end of diskListMod to i
set diskList to rest of diskList
    end repeat
choose from list diskListMod with prompt "Choose the Startup disk:"
set startUpDisk to (item 1 of the result) as text
do shell script "bless -mount \"/Volumes/" & startUpDisk & "\" -setBoot" with administrator privileges
do shell script "shutdown -r now" with administrator privileges
Just one caveat thought. The list of disks displayed when you run it includes non-start up disk, too. So be sure you know what you're choosing. I'll see if I can figure out how to eliminate them from the list a bit later.

  • Looking for "Startup Disk" Control Panel for OS 7.1

    Hi,
For some reason the "Startup Disk" control panel is missing from my PowerBook 170 and it's not booting up nice like it should. I still like and use the old Mac PowerBook 170 for word processing. In many ways I even prefer it. Easy on the eyes and it keeps me off the internet.
Does anyone know where I can find a copy the OS 7.1 > Control Panel > "Startup Disk"?
    Thanks!

  • Startup disk App in System preferences not working in one partition

Using the Startup disk App, I cannot reboot from my Mac OS X drive to another; but when I am in another of the drives/partitions, the Startup disk App. works. Checking the console, system.log, I found this statement repeated many times, after I filtered it with "Startup disk":
Mar 29 10:26:21 xxx-xxxxxxx's-powermacg3series /usr/sbin/update: FIXME: IOUnserialize has detected a string that is not valid UTF-8, " ˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇ". I am not sure that this is pertinent, however.
How can I solve this problem without an archive and install on my primary drive?

The G3 is the Blue & White model, 450 MHz, 896 MB RAM. I have 3 HDrives, one with two partitions; all the drives/partitions have Mac OS 10.4.11, except for one which has 9.2.2. The problem has been going on for many months. As I stated, when I am in my primary drive, I cannot get the Startup Disk application in the System Preferences application to boot to any other of the drives/partitions. However, when I am booted in any of those other drives/partitions, I can boot wherever I want to. I suspect that the original installation had a gliche that caused this problem; installations sometimes don't work the first time, but I want to avoid a new archive and install on my primary drive, if I can locate the problem and correct it more directly. Any help you can give I will really appreciate.

  • Invisible Startup Disk Icon on Desktop and Finder

Today suddenly I found that my Startup disk icon was gone from the desktop and from the Finder. I did some searching and found the following solution that may be useful for someone else:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4932292#post4932292
    I pasted the solution below:
    from a Terminal window, type:
    ls -lOd /
(That's lowercase ell, lowercase ess, space, minus, lowercase ell, capital oh, lowercase dee, space, forward slash)
You should get something like this:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t 32 root admin - 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
Sounds like you might see something like this instead:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t@ 32 root admin hidden 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
(note it says "hidden" instead of "-")
    To fix this, type:
    sudo chflags nohidden /
and provide your admin password. You won't get any output back from the command but the icon should now appear on your desktop, and the hidden flag should go away if you repeat the 'ls -lOd /' command.
And just in case you missed it above, you've got to be sure Hard disks are turned on in Finder General Preferences under "Show these items on the Desktop"

A few days after trying the solution in my previous post, I realized that the Startup disk icon was still missing from Devices in the Finder's sidebar.
So, following some advice from other forums, I went and deleted com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlists.plist from homedirectory/library/preferences. Then did a control-option-click on Finder in the Dock and chose "relaunch".
So this completed the fix. Coincidentally this also fixed a "freeze" issue that I was having.

  • If someone torrents a OS X upgrade on your computer how can you restore it without the startup disk

I recently let my friend use my computer for a few days with the promise that it would run better. When i got it back i found out he torrented Mac OS X 10.7. i have let it sit on my computer for a while but it has caused problems with downloading apps. I would like to know how to downgrade back to the compter was when i orginally bought it. I do not have a startup disk because i bought it from a used mac seller online. also i would like to keep my files, music, games, ETC.

That was an incredibly bad thing your friend did to your computer. A torrent of just about any software you download for the Mac will have malware in it. So that gets installed along with the software you think you're getting for "free".
I wouldn't use that computer for anything where you may type in a password, checking or credit card numbers, or any other type of sensitive data until you've had the chance to backup your important files.
Once you have a way to do so, erase the drive and reinstall the OS, and then reinstall only your legally acquired software.

  • Migrating from G5 iMac to new Macbook

I have an assortment of issues that need answers but I'll be as brief as possible.
I have a new Macbook that I wanted to be able to install my iTunes library on. Part of my problem probably stems from my impatients because I didn't wait untill I had the proper cables to set up and migrate from my iMac G5 on the initial start up of the Macbook.
So I created a new user account on the Macbook and did all the updates. Since my iTunes library is on an external hard drive I thought I could just load it from there. It worked but none of my info (ratings, comments, dates, etc..) were there. The next day I picked up an ethernet to ethernet cable and decided to migrate the info using the migration assistant. It worked but then I had two user accounts for myself and a library in each, the one in the new user account was still lacking the track info.
It's not a small library and it was taking up more memory on my Macbook than I thought it should so deleted the library in the new user account, it fixed the memory issue but, the library in my old user account could no longer locate the files. I tried to start over from the begining with little success.
    So here are my questions
    1) How do I get back to square one on the Macbook?
    2) Is it(digital rights management crap)that is causing me trouble or the fact that my files are on an external hard drive that is keeping me from successfully migrating the info?
    3) All I really want is to be able to sync my iTunes library on the Macbook with my Imac iTunes library, the rest of the stuff from the user accounts on the iMac are fine staying where they are. How do I do this?
    Thanks

If I do that will my library be accessable on the macbook without the external hard drive?
